Subscribe to RSSWith just over two weeks until the Iowa caucuses, GOP contenders are making the final push for votes. NBC's Mike Viqueira reports.
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Despite not spending much time or resources in the first-in-the-nation caucus state, Mitt Romney won the endorsement Saturday of Iowa’s largest newspaper, The Des Moines Register.
“Sobriety, wisdom and judgment ... those are qualities Mitt Romney said he looks for in a leader. Those are qualities Romney himself has demonstrated in his career in business, public service and government,” the newspaper said in an editorial Saturday night, just 17 days before the caucuses. “Those qualities help the former Massachusetts governor stand out as the most qualified Republican candidate competing in the Iowa caucuses.”
The Register, which was publishig its endorsement in Sunday’s paper, says its goal with a caucus endorsement “is to provide a perspective for Iowans beyond what they read in regular news coverage and see in debates.”

The former Massachusetts governor did not win this endorsement last cycle. Rather, the Register endorsed John McCain. McCain, who lost the Iowa caucuses to Mike Huckabee, went on to be the eventual nominee.
“We did not endorse him [Romney] then [2008 caucus], but this is a different field, and he has matured as a candidate,” the editorial board wrote. “Rebuilding the economy is the nation’s top priority, and Romney makes the best case among the Republicans that he could do that.”
The Register’s editorial board has been endorsing candidates since 1988 – and three of the four Republicans -- Bob Dole, George W. Bush, McCain -- it has endorsed over the past 24 years have gone on to be the Republican nominee. Only one, Bush, was elected president.
Romney is trailing Newt Gingrich in the Hawkeye State, polls suggest.
According to the Dec. 4 NBC News-Marist poll among likely caucus goers in Iowa, Gingrich was polling at 28 percent, and Romney and Ron Paul were tied with 19 percent (after reallocating Herman Cain supporters to their second-choice candidate).
Gingrich won the endorsement of New Hampshire’s largest newspaper, the Union Leader, just three weeks ago.
Romney, who has been criticized for his frequent absence in Iowa, was last in the state Friday but it is not known when he will return here.
The Iowa caucus takes place on Jan. 3, and this endorsement likely will raise expectations for Romney's performance there. But some political watchers were unimpressed.
A caucus veteran in the state told NBC News: "This endorsement could not be more meaningless. There is a reason they [the Register] lost their debate this year: Iowans simply do not care."

Presidents must work with businesses to get re-elected, not against them. Working with businesses is against everything a good liberal stands for. The reason is liberals believe all the problems in the world are due to consumerism, with the US being the largest consumer. Whether it is global warming or water pollution, it is consumerism that is the culprit. That’s why Al Gore said he wants the price of gas to skyrocket with higher taxes in order to curb consumption. Less consumption equals slower economic activity and fewer jobs. The bottom line is if one wants to be a good liberal, then the economy must suffer. No wonder Clinton was the only 2-term elected Democrat president in the last sixty years.

Oh, so you believe in trickle-down economics. Why are the liberals occupying Wall Street? Where are the jobs, and I’m not talking about seasonal Walmart cashiers and stock boys? Good construction jobs as in company expansions. Those won't appear until another year because Obama waited until now to work with businesses.

These grumblings are the first sounds of our KIDS telling us how pissed off they are that we (R and D) have made such a big ass mess out of this country. cowboy17: Here's why the stock market has been rising since March of 09. It's because good old uncle Ben Bernanke was, up until July of this year, throwing 100 BILLION dollars a month at the stock markets. Have you heard of "quantitative easing", parts 1 and 2??
That's what both of those programs did. In simplest terms, he gave investment bankers money to go and buy stocks. When you artificially create 100 Billion dollars a month of demand, and the markets know that money is going to continue to pour into the markets for a fixed time, which, in this case, was until June of 11, then of course stock prices will rise.
But, funny thing, did you happen to notice the sudden decline in the markets since July, and have you been aware of the insane volatility for the last 6 months?? It's all because Bernanke has realized that all QE did was raise stock prices, and also because Europe is in the financial sewer as well. QE 1 and 2 did nothing for the rest of the economy as was planned, but it did cause stock prices to rise. But even Bernanke knows he can't just keep spending money to give to the markets and further running up the federal debt.
So, that, in a nutshell is why stock prices have risen. It's all been artificially induced and has cost the tax payers billions to put up a facade of stability. That will be coming to an end soon. I got out of the markets the first time at 13,300 and the second time at 12,600. I didn't lose a dime either time.
I moved 95% of my funds in to guaranteed no risk accounts and will be keeping them there for at least the next 6 months. If Europe goes down the tubes, the markets will tank. Buy and hold is for suckers in this day and age. Anyone who just lets it sit without some well thought out risk management strategies, is just asking to get creamed again.

So far accept for Ron Paul I don't see much hope for any change in this country with the bunch of fools we see running right now. If B. Hussein Obama couldn't handle the job of being POTUS, then he should've never run for it in the first place. I mean this is the Leftist, Liberal, Socialist, Marxist, Democrat, "Community Organizer" who promised that he would cut the U.S. Federal Deficit IN HALF by the end of his first term (He's doubled it in less than THREE YEARS) as POTUS.
He promised that his Obamacare, socialized medicine scheme, would decrease the cost of health care and health insurance once passed and since its passage, the cost of health care and health insurance has gone nothing, but UP.
B. Hussein Obama also promised he would close down GITMO, which he never did and won't ever do.
He also promised that if the U.S. Economy didn't turn around in three years, from him taking office as POTUS, then his presidency would likely be a "one term deal." Romney is very superficially appealing. He's got the looks and the voice. These traits only matter in movies. The last Fox debate really tried to support him, while only asking Paul questions that make him look controversial or like a fringe candidate. They didn't ask the man who delivers babies about abortion. They didn't ask him any questions where he would shine. They actively are screwing Ron Paul out of having a fair shot at the nomination, while only supporting Romney so as to thwart Gingrich. Whenever there is a question where Paul's position is in agreement with others in the field, he is excluded and made to look radical as would any candidate who is only asked radical questions. When listening to Romney and Gingrich, their tone and speech patterns often make it clear that they are using rhetoric and not saying what they truly think. This is the same thing Obama did, and when liars get into office, they slowly stop lying and renege on their campaign promises. Two indispensable characteristics for practically the most powerful position in the world are honesty and trustworthiness. It is clear which candidates are pandering for votes and which actually believe what they say.

eventually romney will win the gop nomination. he has the team in place and the money to go the distance. all of these primary attacks that he is too moderate will actually be a benefit for him come the general election. the fact of the matter is that this country is center-right and moderates and independants will be more likely to be drawn to a candidtate whose own peers have relentlessly called him moderate for the past couple months. People are no longer looking for someone who thinks that they will have a mandate to push for controversial reform because 51% of the 30% who actually vote voted for them. Romney will look to fix the economy. priority two and three will also be to fix the economy. it will be a welcome relief.
