Mitt Romney snags Des Moines Register endorsement in Iowa

With just over two weeks until the Iowa caucuses, GOP contenders are making the final push for votes. NBC's Mike Viqueira reports.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Despite not spending much time or resources in the first-in-the-nation caucus state, Mitt Romney won the endorsement Saturday of Iowa’s largest newspaper, The Des Moines Register.

“Sobriety, wisdom and judgment ... those are qualities Mitt Romney said he looks for in a leader. Those are qualities Romney himself has demonstrated in his career in business, public service and government,” the newspaper said in an editorial Saturday night, just 17 days before the caucuses. “Those qualities help the former Massachusetts governor stand out as the most qualified Republican candidate competing in the Iowa caucuses.”

The Register, which was publishig its endorsement in Sunday’s paper, says its goal with a caucus endorsement “is to provide a perspective for Iowans beyond what they read in regular news coverage and see in debates.”

Read the full endorsement in the Des Moines Register

The former Massachusetts governor did not win this endorsement last cycle. Rather, the Register endorsed John McCain. McCain, who lost the Iowa caucuses to Mike Huckabee, went on to be the eventual nominee.

“We did not endorse him [Romney] then [2008 caucus], but this is a different field, and he has matured as a candidate,” the editorial board wrote. “Rebuilding the economy is the nation’s top priority, and Romney makes the best case among the Republicans that he could do that.”

The Register’s editorial board has been endorsing candidates since 1988 – and three of the four Republicans -- Bob Dole, George W. Bush, McCain -- it has endorsed over the past 24 years have gone on to be the Republican nominee. Only one, Bush, was elected president.

Romney is trailing Newt Gingrich in the Hawkeye State, polls suggest.

According to the Dec. 4 NBC News-Marist poll among likely caucus goers in Iowa, Gingrich was polling at 28 percent, and Romney and Ron Paul were tied with 19 percent (after reallocating Herman Cain supporters to their second-choice candidate).

Gingrich won the endorsement of New Hampshire’s largest newspaper, the Union Leader, just three weeks ago.

Romney, who has been criticized for his frequent absence in Iowa, was last in the state Friday but it is not known when he will return here.

The Iowa caucus takes place on Jan. 3, and this endorsement likely will raise expectations for Romney's performance there. But some political watchers were unimpressed.

A caucus veteran in the state told NBC News: "This endorsement could not be more meaningless. There is a reason they [the Register] lost their debate this year: Iowans simply do not care."

Really?!?!? The Des Moines Register?!?! Wow! Now there's an influential newspaper I read every single day!

Oh, wait a minute, I've never read the Des Moines Register . . . and why should I even care who some editorial of some obscure newspaper has endorsed? They are people just presenting their opinion. They have no special powers, they are people, just like me, and their opinion counts as much as the next person.

I know, let's go get 5 random people off the street, call them some kind of name, like 'The Committee to Endorse the Next President of the United States', and have them endorse someone. It would mean just as much to me as the Des Moines Register's endorsement.

Having said that, I do have admiration for how Iowa determines it's political districts. It is the fairest method, and every state should adopt it.

You don't need to care what the Register does. It is the largest Iowa paper and supposedly has the biggest influence in Iowa. It is also firmly in the the liberal column, which is the most important piece of information you need to know. Thus, it's endorsement of Romney says that he is the most liberal of repubs. It also indicates that Romney is the most likely to be beaten by Obama. What the article doesn't address is the Register's endorsement of Obama over Romney.

The 'Home Stretch', at last.

Either Romney or Gingrich would be a good alternative to the dismal failure we currently have in the White House.

Voters made a HUGE mistake picking Obama over Hillary in 2008 - She was FAR better qualified. Obama's biggest actual accomplishment was to get a few people to register to vote in Chicago and sue to force Citibank to make house loans to unqualified poor people.

Ok--the headline--"key endorsement" and it turns out to be an old school print newspaper with a subscription rate of The Des Moines Register-

Not a bad regional newspaper, but how many times has the endorsement of any newspaper changed your vote, especially now, when we have live everything?

A newspaper is not a person. Period! Such an endorsement is one person---the editor. I am neither for, nor against Romney, but if one looks at an endorsement realistically, it means squat. Or, it should to a rational person.

One newspaper equals one person---the editor.

btone: Absolutely! The fact is that the libs let everyone know who they fear most. For 4 years they feared Palin. Why else would they expend so much energy to tear her and her family down? She was not a candidate for anything. I, for one do not have a short memory. The libs in the media and politics spent the entire 2008 primary criticizing everyone but McCain. Why? Because McCain was an easy target for his constant "reaching across the isle." Thus, he was the most liberal of the repubs. As soon as he got the nomination he was suddenly no longer the savoir of the repubs, he became an evil repub. The same will happen campaign year. Whoever the libs support and endorse in the the repub primary is the one who they think are easiest to beat in the general election. It's really no more difficult than that. The Register is a lib paper. Thus, they want the most lib to win. That is Obama. They will come out and support Obama in the general election. End of story.

The fact is that the more liberal the repub nominee is the more likely Obama is to win. Obama can't run on his record. He and the libs don't even pretend that he can. Their only hope is to be able to tear down his opponent. There best bet is Romney because they figure it is hard for Romney to convince people that he is different from Obama if Obama got Obamacare from Romneycare.

The reason any of the repubs are better than Obama is that we know what Obama will do. At least with even the most liberal repub there is a chance that he will sign repub legislation. A chance is certainly better than no chance.

If course, one could vote for Obama with the idea of there is nothing he can do because it is still Bush's fault. Heck, that's still the only argument Obama is making now. Pretty sad. But, unfortunately I have to admit that it is enough for libs to vote for him. The reason repubs are more likely to vote against their guy is that repubs are more likely to be the ones demanding results. Libs are satisfied with intent and results are irrelevant. Need proof? Then consider that Obama has produced no results, unless you like a stagnant economy and high unemployment. With 1/2 of Americans now classified as poor or low income, and all the unemployed and so many more dependent on government, is it any surprise that Obama considers his policies a success? It's what he had in mind when he took over, and he has succeeded!

Romneycare was established while he was a governor. That was in the best interest of his state. Are people in MA complaining about the care that was established? I am not a fan of all of Obamacare, although there are some parts to it that make sense.

About McCain....As soon as he put Palin as his running mate, he sunk himself.

Ladies and gentlemen check CSPAN.com for the interview the Register had with Mitt Romney and the other candidates to find out why we ought to care.

Now the fact that you probably won't bother to sit through the entire hour proves
the incompetence of certain electorates who either choose to remain ignorant or
misinformed as a result of an unwillingness to seek out the reality of certain
candidates, their substance, or lack thereof. The Des Moines Register, albeit
just a conglomeration of "simple people," (not just the
editor) have taken far more care to effectively evaluate each candidate and
make a decision as to who they believe is most deserving of not votes, not the
approval of you or I, but the ultimate position of leadership that is the
Presidency. If you truly wish to rail against this or any other endorsement, do
yourself and the country a favor and look beyond the media, look beyond your
own opinions, move past your apathy, and do some research. You're smart enough
to read the news, prove you're smart enough not to hand the reigns of the
country over to someone undeserving.

Yes the decision of the Des Moines register is opinion.

But it represents an opinion that is far more deliberate, wise, and informed than
many of ours, whether it be for Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, or
President Obama himself.

sygh Ron Paul is the best candidate over-all.

Ron Paul is actually to old to go into the office of President. He'll be 77 at the time he would take office, that's 7 yrs older than Reagan who was nearing the end of his 2nd term at that age and at that time was showing signs of Alzheimer. The office of the Presidency is stressful enough for anyone (look how much the past Presidents age), but certainly too stressful for someone Ron Paul's age. Although some elderly are quick witted into their 80's, I for one would not chance the most important position in this country to someone in their late 70's.

The DesMoines Register is a typical liberal mainstream newspaper. It is a tool for democrats and does not speak for conservatives or republicans.

I would love to see the entire nominating system change for both parties. Unimportant states like Iowa and New Hampshire that are mostly rural and 99% White should not play such a large role in either party's nomination process.

You find history in St. Augustine and Olustee. The Everglade and the Keys. Caves in the panhandle. Want me to continue. Ocala national forest, the spring rivers. Need more?

You find great history in New York City, the first capital of the US plus Central Park and the zoo, the greatest art and natural history museums in the country, the Hayden Planetarium along with Broadway and off Broadway shows and the Opera and Lincoln Center, Times Square, Greenwich Village. I could go on but that's enough. Plus I don't have to drive to any of them.

Obama did one good thing and that was keeping the Clintons out of the White House. But Obama should have the ethics to say he is sorry that his party backed subprime including freddie and fannie. He should say sorry for his party not stopping Bin Laden in 98, 99 and 2000. Read: August 7th 1998 , and realize that the democrats destroyed America. True hate is in certain parts of Detroit, Chicago, NY, DC, LA, and other major cities in the US. It won't matter who wins the nomination. The Republicans will keep submitting to the will of the rich/"job creators"/"1%" if they get power, Obama will continue to submit to the Republicans for "compromise", and the legislature will continue to bicker over this and that while this country goes down the crapper. I say tax the rich, fix education on the state level so that the next generation will have leaders who will actually DO SOMETHING, and use the constantly depleting oil reserves to make plastic for the solar panels and wind turbines for when black gold goes dry. Then we shall start looking at presidential runs and who has more charisma or who shows the truest "American Values".

You do realize most people don't vote during midterm elections and its a great time to get the villages to grab their pitch forks and attack the castle. Unfortunately your little Fredricksburg charge into the bomb creater has turned into a trap and the soldiers are getting trampled on and shot up by those on the rim. Sorry, probably a little too much history for you. Let me dumb it down for you.....

Your little midterm tidal wave hit a cliff and the backwash is still carying out the refuse it brought in. Nice JOBS BILL - oh sorry Obama created that and got Obstructed. Way to get us out of Iraq - oops sorry Obama did it. Nice job on Osama - damn did Obama do that too? Way to take out a Sh*t load of terrorists in a few yea....oh yeah, nevermind.

                  Yup, Carl. They suuuuure did.

And now we've woken up and realized that what we did in 2010 wasn't a bad dream. The people will most certainly be fixing the wrongs in 2012. We will have the White House and I believe a filibuster proof majority in the Senate and will take back the House such that the people's business will finally happen. People want to live. People HAVE to live and support their families and have good jobs, with decent pay. There are so many ways to accomplish this if the Teabaggers just STFU and go away.

As an aside, I went to college in Iowa. There are, thankfully, a good number of rather liberal democrats living there still now. They HATE their governor and I believe that they will show up at the polls in large numbers in November, if not to vote out the governor since he isn't on the ballot, but to show him that his days are numbered.

Mormons look after Mormons. Other people get the left overs. Religion is relevant only because it gives an insight to a politicians intelligence. Religion once taught that the world was flat and the sun rotated around the earth. Either politicians believe or they say they believe to get the christian vote.

True that politicians may say that they are Christian in order to get a vote. Romney probably did not lie about that though.

Untrue it is to say that religion gives an insight to their intelligence... Just because they may have taught that the world was flat (400 years ago when everyone thought that). Much of the technology we use today was indeed invented by Christians, not to mention that people with religion also proved that the world was not flat. So your post seems to have a bit of bigotry in it.

The Libs could sure use a pick me up, and Christianity just might be the answer, but they are so closed-minded. Hey Libs, this is the Sabbath...Sunday. I'll bet very few ofyou went to church. I will bet, however, that an overwhelming percentage of Conservatives went to church today. Any takers? And it will be Christianity, in support of the Holy Land and Israel, that wins this election big-time. JEsus loves America and will guide the voters.

Bush the Elder squandered the so called peace dividend when he tricked Saddam into thinking there would be no consequences in invading Kuwait. He also squandered it, by not disbanding NATO as he implied to the Soviets, once they dispanded the Warsaw Pact. Everything Bubbadid he could do so because of both Reagan and Bush the Elder.

We could'nt go into Afgan in 98 or 2000, give me a break. During this time the country is talking about cigars and DNA on a blue dress. Only Slick Willie the mindless pathetic slick willie. People in his home state who voted for him called him slick willie. Saddam went into Kuwait just weeks after the Kuwait envoy told Saddam that loans to Iraq are not open for disscusion. Thats when he went forward. By the way Kuwait paid for the war. Then Bin Laden declared war in 98. 9/11 was hatched after Clinton bombed Iraq for the third time. 9/11 was all about Iraq. A worthless pile of garbage destroyed America. A democrat economist called the Financial Crisis "the Clinton Bubble"

Spoken just like a loser who makes minimum wage and wants hand outs. I am sure you voted, and will vote for Obama. The worst mistake ever made electing a president. But, he keeps or gas tanks full and no house payments............what a group of losers. If we could only destroy all the wealthy folks and their businesses, you broke losers would become the new wealthy, then you could hate yourselves.

Bank America has no Democrat stockholders? Warren Buffett owns a sizable chunk of the stock - Some one should tell him he's really a Republican......

This is a 'no big deal' moment. Iowa caucuses are heavily weighted by the fundie social conservatives who have their knickers in a bunch over fetuses, gays and not showing enough fealty to their Jesus. It's a very nice, but very rural state where the electorate overall skews more conservative so it is not wonder Mitt the Mormon is trailing there, and newly repentant Newt, and rapturous Michelle will likely do better. Ron Paul will also do well, and would be a credible candidate were it not for his sociopathic belief in a market ideology which most of America is already suffering from; It's just he would allow the screws to turn even tighter to make sure the so-called 'free market' would destroy what is left of us.

The GOP's base will make absolutely sure they have a candidate that is both ideologically pure and wholly unelectable. At every election cycle the right moves ever closer to residing in a mental home and the moderates give in ever more in a feeble attempt to maintain what is left of America isn't completely ruined by their insane policies. Conservatives won thirty years ago and have spent three decades dragging us through their experiment. We now see the results and we may never recover. A (so-far) mild economic depression, no middle class growth or mobility, half the country close to poverty, income redistribution to the top, low wage jobs, disinvestment in education, energy and our infrastructure, transference of our civic power to corporate interests and a your on your own social net that cheers unfortunate circumstances while demonizing groups of citizens they don't like, and naked attempts to place fundamentalist christian beliefs to replace secular civil laws forcing those who don't share their worldview to suffer needlessly.

Sorry GOP. Field these losers all you want. Obama is not doing a great job, but at least he isn't advocating the destruction of our country for the sake of tax cuts and religious dogma masquerading as policy.

Dude, the free market is nothing more than the will of the people in economic terms. We are suffering from a free market that has been totally hijacked by Wall St banksters and their corporate hacks, which have bought off our political class off lock, stock, and barrel. You follow the money and the truth is there for all to see. Greed plays a central role, but a lot of the current mess was orchestrated by the rising corporate/government synthesis going on before our very eyes in how Congress deregulated the banks, and also forced them to give loans to folks that otherwise should have been turned down. These actions allowed the current scam to happen. How else do you explain how Congress gave the banks and other $16 trillion dollars? As for Paul allowing the screews to get tighter, I hate to say it but the screws are going to tighten either way. We are too far gone in debt. We can have the Fed keep inflating the money and creating a hyperinflationary disaster or stop the presses now and have maybe half a decade of really bad times, compared to 2-3 decades worth.

Obama is going to go for the payroll tax cut as long as the oil pipeline isn't part of the bill. Also, Obama's cabinet is brought to you compliments of Goldman Sach's, so whatever the banksters want Obama will give it to them. The only GOP hope to win the White House back in 2012 is Ron Paul. He appeals to many indpeendents, military folks sick of being deployed to hellholes, libertarians, Reagan Democrats, and the anti war crowd. The rest will only have tea party folks and the ever diminishing religious right to back them in the general election.

Long gone are the days when the blacksmith who yearned to represent his people trotted off to Washington to provide for the greater good of his community. He would do his best and then return to his home and his family leaving another man to do his best for the community.

Now, elected officials stay there for life because people just keep reelecting them out of sheer lazyiness and lack of interest.

I believe there should be term limits for both the Senate and the House. One term. If you get elected you go and do your very best for your state and for our country and you go home leaving it for the next person.

Libertarianism is truly one of the more sociopathic ideologies of the far right economic spectrum, and if you want to be honest, thirty years of 'supply-side' trickle-down economic policy is just a mild form of that ideal.

We've now seen what an unmitigated catastrophe it has meant for most middle-class Americans.

Central to this ideology, Ron Paul is loathe to place reasonable restraints on the less savory aspects of business self-interest and narrow bandwidth of social concern. Given that the power and money are already concentrated at the top, I could not imagine Ron Paul and his merry Ayn Rand fan club removing what little is left that protects us from their tender mercies. Not to mention his overt and naked social conservative bona fides which seems to add salt to the already gashed wound.

Ron Paul is unfortunately another GOP president candidate running partially on a platform that actively seeks to deny certain Americans the benefits of secular legal civil marriage and control over the lives of child bearing women. Absent his wacky economic theories, the entire GOP field should be invalidated since they openly state an ideal to inject themselves into the personal lives of certain American citizens they don't like.

The GOP and its platform is certainly a fetid stew of contradictions, bigotries and whacked-out ideologies. Sorry, but I'll take moderation, rationality and reason as my basis for governance.
