42% say current Congress has been one of the worst

Has the 112th Congress -- which is winding down its work for the year -- been one of the worst ever?

According to the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, 42 percent agree with that assessment -- the highest percentage on this particular question, which dates back to 1990.

An additional 33 percent say its performance has been below average, and 21 percent say it has been average.

Only 2 percent label it above average, and 1 percent calls it “one of the best” ever.

The NBC/WSJ poll -- which was conducted Dec. 7-11 of 1,000 respondents (including 200 by cell phone), and which has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points -- will be released in full beginning at 6:30 pm ET.

Ain't that the truth!

Couple that with a current approval rating hovering around 9%, the Congress Critters should be proud they have achieved nothing more than pissing off 91% of this country!

Stock up on beach towels, there is a tsunami brewing in 2012 which will wash these losers back out to sea!

Gosh Murray not much there, there.

Maybe a little discussion about how this poll relates to the other polls where all but 9% hate congress?

Or relate it to the right track wrong track [75% wrong track] or Obama's disapproval rate.

Let's see here we see 42% think this congress sucks, and an even higher percent disapprove of Obama, so looks like a lot of people will get voted out.

Interesting, particularly since all we got for the short term is a payroll tax cut - something dems usually hate-less revenue and cuts into SS, and the Keystone pipeline.

In other news, Jon Corzine went in front of Congress, again. He told them he had no idea where the $1.2 billion of customer money went.

$1.2 billion, and Corzine has no clue. This guy was lined up to be the next Treasury Secretary. Obama sure knows how to pick them.

Is a fine & dishonorable underestimation. Describing the GOPtp fiasco is not aisy, to be sure.

Stop now and try if you can to not forget who is in office now, and who you want out of office. This political game has been going on long enough, just like school children, in fact, worse than children because these idiots are bringing america down and there doesn't seem to be anyone who is able or willing to help. They are neither willing or able because in their back pockets, overseas bank books, are receiving deposits, and they know this will end soon, so they keep the dog chasing his tail. Clinton was a brilliant politician. So was Newt. Look at what they accomplished. If you set aside your partisanship, you would be hard pressed not to admire what they did for each of their parties, and for the American people.

Now overlay that with Obama, Reid, Pelosi and Boehner. 4 of the worst politicians in modern history.

These 4 have caused more division, more class hatred, and have overseen more financial disaster than any of the last 6 Presidents and any Congress since the 60's.

Continue to elect the filthy rich spiteful immature rich boys, and expect to have your Government and any future conflicts run the way a rich boy approaches everything else, shut down the government out of spite, attack without thinking, throw money at it when they realize they have screwed up, blame everyone else, and always attack those who have the brass in pocket to call them out.

If you want to put a stop to our rich boy problems, put middle class US citizens back in control of the US Government as decision makers.

Congress's approval rating is so bad because the system is so riddled with flaws now that it is essentially broken. To a large extent, these issues are caused by a few distinct problems, the largest of which are the way campaigns are financed, the essentially lifelong membership of members of Congress, and the rules that favor the Republicans and Democrats over other parties or candidates that are not affiliated with a party. These issues need to be corrected before we can get our Congress to again begin to focus on the needs and desires of the majority of Americans and what is best for our country as opposed to the needs and desires of the parties themselves and the large contributors to those parties.

The American Overhaul Act (www.americanoverhaulact.org) contains a set of proposed amendments designed to fix these problems so that we can get our government moving again:

          • Congressional Term Limits: A maximum of two four-year terms in either House or Senate, and twelve years total in Congress.
          • Federal Campaign Finance Reform: The majority of funds any candidate spends on a federal election campaign will come from a federal election campaign fund. These federal election campaign funds will be doled out equally to all candidates running for a position (candidates must meet certain predetermined minimum requirements), and at least three candidates for any seat must receive funds. Further, candidates will only be permitted to accept campaign donations from individual constituents, not companies, organizations, or political parties.
          • Congressional Size Limits: Membership in the House of Representatives will be permanently fixed at 300 members.
          • Congressional Compensation: Congressional salaries will be fixed at four times the median household income. Additionally, health insurance will only be provided to members while they are actually serving in Congress (no lifelong healthcare) and pensions for members of Congress will be eliminated.
          • Eliminate Party Favoritism: This amendment will require the elimination of all laws, rules, or regulations that favor or disfavor, either by inclusion or exclusion, any elected official or candidate for an elected office, based upon affiliation with any political party, or lack of affiliation with a political party.
          • Federal Budget-Deficit Reform: The total amount of federal government spending generally must not exceed the amount of money collected by the federal government. There will be exceptions to allow for extra spending in times of national crisis, but the excess “crisis” spending will be limited in amount and duration, and must be corrected by an equal amount of underspending in the years that follow.

These are the types of changes that are needed to return our government to its intended purpose: having representatives that are focused on the needs and desires of American citizens and who take actions that are in the best interest if the country for the long-term. I encourage everyone to go to the American Overhaul Act website at www.americanoverhaulact.org. And, if you agree with these proposals, please support this Act and share it with your friends, family, and elected officials – it will take a lot of continued support to get these amendments passed so that we can make a positive impact on the future of this great nation!

When Republicans start the session by openly stating that their primary goal is to destroy the president, uh yeh!

It's the worst congress on several levels, first and foremost record obstructionism in the form of filibuster, blocks and holds. Republicans agreed not to abuse the filibuster in order to get nominees approved during the Bush administration. Wow, that lasted really long (NOT). Is it any wonder the Demsdon't trust these rat bastards now?

Secondly it is the worst in terms of number of bills passed. And don't give me the old Dems won't cooperate with Teapublicans BS. The most recent tax payroll gimmick is a great example, in which the only bills Teapublicans pass are those they know won't pass the senate, and in this case would also be vetoed if it could pass the senate. Because the president already told them he would use the veto if they attached unrelated crap like the pipeline to a payroll tax cut bill, and they didn't get 2/3rds vote.

And third, the bills that have been passed have been complete over-reach like the unconstitutional balanced budget amendment, or redundant like abortion bills, or really silly bills like commemorative coins and naming buildings. And it doesn't help that Boehner has the Teapublican House taking a week off for every week worked.

Only 42% realize this? YES, this is the worst GOP/TP congress I've seen in my entire life! Throw the Teapublicans out!

          ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paul F -- Newt Gingrich "caused more division, more class hatred, and have overseen more financial disaster than any of the last 6 Presidents and any Congress since the 60's."

And don't forget wedge issue, name calling, and complete lack of integrity along with government shut downs and lobbying for Freddie Mac and preventing needed reforms. He's still attacking poor kids, and that's not class warfare? Get a grip.

Ron Paul is a principled man who is informed concerning the Constitution.

His interpretation of the Constitution is so rigid that to implement his policies would result in catastrophic loss of human life the first time a major natural disaster occurred. Clean water would also be either privatized and prohibitively expensive or unavailable because of degredation due to unregulated pollution. Small farms would not survive the first drought.

Ron Paul's brand of Constitutional interpretation is not practical in a Nation with a population density such as ours. It only worked when most of the nation was wilderness.

Regardless of this, the worst criticism one could validly raise concerning Dr. Paul is that he is an idealogue to an unreasonable degree.

A junk poll. If you rig the question you get the answer you want. If you asked the poll takers "do you like YOUR Congressman/woman" then the vast majority say yes. But if you ask "do you like Congress", most everyone dislikes them a lot. So in actuality we love our Congressperson and we dislike everyone else's. Huge difference.

And where is Harry's budget for FY2012 (or FY2011, or FY2010, or FY2009). Sounds like an important thing to have, now doesn't it? Harry doesn't think so. The House passed their FY2012 budget back in April, and Harry and Barack did what again? The ridiculed it, used it as campaign fodder. What did Harry and Barack come up with? Nothing.

JoAnnaSmith1: Of course, you pick the comment with which you disagree and ignore everything else that I said. The Senate is broken due, in large part, to the Republican's need to filibuster. It's difficult to pass anything when 60 votes are required for the passage of legislation. As I recall, before President Obama took office, Democrats and Republicans in the Senate agreed not to filibuster judicial nominees, but the Republican's seem to have forgotten that agreement. (By the way, you are lucky to be on a first name basis with President Obama and Senator Reid. Have you personally known them for a long time?)

Additionally, while many from your side of the aisle think the Grover Norquist is "just a random guy," when our elected officials sign pledges, any pledge, it undermines their ability to participate in this country's representative democracy; they are unable to work together and compromise.

JoAnna, JoAnna, JoAnna (sigh). Please tell me in which house of Congress bills originate, then tell me who controls that house. Next, please tell me which house of Congress has the filibuster rule, its purpose and how it is implemented, how it is overridden, and who is in the minority in that house. Armed with the facts, perhaps you will see your position is downright ignorant.

Never mind, I forgot to whom I was talking.

Yep, and the House has prevented the Senate from coming up with a budget for what is nearly 1000 days.

Or is it cause of the filibuster rule, which by the way Harry had the chance to, but declined to do anything about.

JAS1 - team libbie cannot admit the truth. It hurts too much. Easier to blame the GOP.

Much like what is happening to Obama. He has failed. He is their guy. The great Hope and liberal Change.

So now faced with that failure [ain't nobody better off now than they were 4 years ago] they get to chose - either liberalism failed or it was Obama.

            Poor Obama. Toast is he.

            Spanky and others,

I don't think that the Repubs were standing in the way for a budget to be presented for vote when they did not control the House. The fact is that the Dems in the Senate have failed this country because they are the party of NO. If they don't get a bill that they want it always get shelved, after they have crucified everyone connected with it. Very predictable. There is no compromising with Reid. Too bad he didn't get ousted by the citizens of Nevada, last year.

                  Ripcity....

Actually, Bills can be posted from either side of congress, not just from the House of Representatives. I suggest you go back and learn how the Government actually works.

Like Obama's "Jobs" bill he introduced it in the Senate, not the House where he knew it would get tabled. Even at that, the Senate took it upon themselves to rewrite it before bringing it out for discussion, and that took Reid over a month.

I have a post from another article at is even more appropiate posted here, so if you all don't mind I'm going to repost it here for your pleasure...

Many of you should take note.....

I think most Americans know what they elected in 2010, most of them ran on a platform of stopping the big spending big government liberals.

Given that they knew what they were electing, the lack of progress is distressing to only the liberal agenda and those that support it. Most I've talked to hope Obama does actually campaign against the "Do Nothing Congress" specifically since the Voters made it a "Do Nothing Congress" on purpose.

Obama got it the day after the election, and everything he has done since is try to show himself and his party as "not the problem" or "blame it on Congress" of which he is failing miserably.

Sounds to me that the liberal left wing of the democrat party has lost touch with the people, like they were really in touch with them in the first place.

There is one candidate that nobody can touch, except to make feeble attempts to label him one way or another. The usual things they wind up with are "Unelectable" "Looney" "Out of Touch" "Crazy" "Lives in the 18th century" When they try to confront him on actual issues he eats their lunch.

Liberals don't want him to get the Nomination because they know that there will be a REAL danger of Obama having his ASS handed to him on election day. The Media knows the SAME fact as much as they are skewing the polls to say otherwise.

I just got back from a trip to Iowa to visit family. Iowa is a SEA of blue Rloveution signs, Very Popular are the Eagle and Ron Portrait signs.

Don't believe all the polls that are being pushed at you, there is something going on in IOWA and we really NEED to pay attention to it. I do not want to sound crazy, but there is a political earthquake happening, a groundshift if you wanna call it that... I've been watching politics for over 50 years the Reagan revolution holds nothing to what I think is coming....

I think the political world is about to change, and I think it starts with the death of the Republican Party as a political force.

I know you are going to jump on me, I got big shoulders, Maybe I was just impacted too much seeing what I did just driving down Iowa streets (davenport) But I have always felt that Ron Paul was going to win Iowa, given the number of campaign signs I saw, if each one is a vote, Ron Paul IS the next President. (at least in Iowa) You hardly see a Newt or mittney sign anywhere (and you really got to LOOK! for them....

How lucky for us - Another valuable poll. 42% say this is the worst congress ever. What they mean is every Congressman EXCEPT their own. 33% say below average, except for their own. 21% say average - maybe that includes their own. One-per-cent say "one of the best" ever, which means they are even conducting polls inside asylums.

This Congress, especially the Republicans are simply on the take. McConnell said his goal was to make President Obama a one termer, he did that by his obstructionist do nothing policy that has put this country at risk. If you think the Republicans, especially the teabagger Republicans have YOUR interest at heart, you have not been paying attention. They want to enrich their corporate masters, people like the Koch brothers, and Dick Armey, at the expense of the oath they took to this country. Most of them see that oath as second place to the one that they took to the despicable Grover Norquist.

                  And they call themselves patriots.

At least Occupy Wall Street has put the fear of the God that they claim to worship in some of those reprobates. Occupy Wall Street has turned the conversation around to the 1% who are sending this country to he** in a handbasket.

Republics fall when there is too great a disparity between rich and poor, when there is no flourishing middle class, when class boundaries are not diffuse so that people may move up.

As long as they get their piece of the action, the Republicans simply don't care.

Well at least we got one of 'em as our Treasury Sec. Oh and as Obama's chief of staff. And one is Obama's man on Wall Street, who was also the very first guy he called on '/09 to fix the economy.

And don't forget about Larry Summers.

                    Winemaker,

                    It is spelled socialist.

Additionally, diffuse class boundaries are a clear sign of a healthy economy in a capitalist system. The U.S.S.R at no point of time had diffuse class boundaries. Monarchies typically do not, and neither do fascist and totalitarian regimes. A Capitalistic system without diffuse class boundaries indicates that actual competition and opportunity are lacking, unless someone stupidly believes that the upper class are genetically better, or that some sort of divine caste system exists.

During the postwar period, in which the United States was the premier economy in the World, a diffuse class system existed, and the degree of regulation and tax rate, considered unreasonable by today's standards, was very effective in out-competing an actual Communist competitor.

In 2012 we can elect a better leader. Obviously for most American's it really doesnt matter who is in politics as they will succeed or fail on thier own merits. In the long term however the sooner we stop creating liberals the longer this country will remain a great place to live.....

It is clear dialogue has stopped and the vast majority of US voters, whether progressive, libertarian or conservative are dissatisfied. It is long past time we reclaim our country and government and exile special interests from corrupting our political process.

Term limits... You really want to see Congress on the take, instill those. Then people elected to Congress will only be in a bigger hurry to do the deeds their electoral benefactors told them to do. Knowing their position in Congress is only a short term proposition, they'll NEED jobs afterwards, and there will always be good lobbying positions. Those positions will be guaranteed to be filled by your Congressperson, even if you like them, because they're out of work.

If you don't like YOUR congressperson, that's YOUR problem and you may try to vote them out of office. If I like mine, I'll try to keep them, thank you very much.

                        That is true.

and you may try to vote them out of office

You can try, but you know with rigged voting. It can be so difficult.

Why didn't you just name yourself A lobbyist? If you have a problem with term limits, then why not have the same president for 20 years?

You guys really need to come up with a set of standards, so you don't blow your cover.

I personally think you should be fired. But it's nothing another lie can't cover up.

Yesterday the OWS morons shut down the port of Oakland while the cops stood by and allowed them to stop traffic. Loved it, for the longshoremen and their union refused to cross the picket line. Comments in the paper by the longshormen indicated no pay for the day, averaging from $500 to $600 per day lost.

I hope the OWS are out today, and for the rest of the month, closing down the port, and the union member income. Think it would happen that long, or would the union members take out the OWS themselves?

In Portland, port workers were kept/sent home WITH pay, sooooooooo your myopic, anti-American, anti-worker viewpoint loses again.

The 110th and 111th were worse- the ones that passed TARP and Obamacare. Agree with UAW that the first Tea Party objective was to stop Obama. We had already made the mistake of electing him (although I voted for McCain)- all that could be done was to deal with it.

The insider trading was non-partisan, and was not illegal. Both Pelosi and Boehner were questioned in the same press conference. Many legitimate opportunities exist to be partisan. I suggest you pick one that will not alienate any reasonable conservative through its blatant disregard of pertinent facts.

The House has NOT been sitting on their hands. Just about every bill they send to the Senate gets canned by Reid and the same hand full of liberal snobs. Since the 2010 elections the party of "no" has been he Democrats in the U.S. Senate. All bills originate in the House and for the last two years have died in the Senate.

Actually, President Barack Obama is the 44th and current president of the United States. He was elected in less election results than the previous two elections. He is the duly-elected President governing over every American Citizen. That makes him your leader, unless you lend no credence to the Democratic process and rule of law.

Obama has undermined America financially, economically, politically, diplomatically and militarily. Even after we send him packing in the next election, it will take us years to dig ourselves out of the hole in which he's tried to bury us.

                                                  hey Dems/Libs.....

The people who were polled dislike Congressional Dems MORE than they dislike Congressional Repubs.

                                                  Read up.

"Republicans hold a three-point advantage over Democrats on the Generic Congressional Ballot for the week ending Sunday, Dec. 11. "

Nothing like Msnbc reporting ....where the "M" stands for misleading.

Exactly!! Only by sheer luck and money did the Dems hold onto the Senate. We will finish in 2012 what was started in 2010. Count on it.

Teabaggers - doing there best to return this country to the 19th century.

                                                  deborah,

the point I was making is...... they (Msnbc) are misleading people, with the article here, into believing that the dislike for "Congress" is the dislike of Republicans only.

Does the "d" in your name stand for deceit?

I can think a few other things that the "d" stands for when it comes to the liberal ones...i.e. dick heads, dorks, dipsh*ts, delusional, dimwitted, ect...
