Trump withdraws as moderator of Iowa debate

Donald Trump withdrew Tuesday as the moderator of a debate planned for later this month in Iowa, citing his interest in possibly still running for president as an independent.

Trump pulled out of a debate he had planned to host along with the conservative magazine Newsmax, scheduled for Dec. 27, just days before the Iowa caucuses. All the GOP presidential candidates save for Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum said they would not participate.

"The Republican Party candidates are very concerned that sometime after the final episode of The Apprentice, on May 20th, when the equal time provisions are no longer applicable to me, I will announce my candidacy for President of the United States as an Independent and that, unless I conclusively agree not to run as an Independent, they will not agree to attend or be a part of the Newsmax debate scheduled for December 27, 2011," Trump said in a statement. "It is very important to me that the right Republican candidate be chosen to defeat the failed and very destructive Obama Administration, but if that Republican, in my opinion, is not the right candidate, I am not willing to give up my right to run as an Independent candidate. Therefore, so that there is no conflict of interest within the Republican Party, I have decided not to be the moderator of the Newsmax debate. The American people are embarrassed by the gridlock currently taking place in Washington. I must leave all of my options open because, above all else, we must make America great again!"

It's not clear whether any debate with Newsmax will go forward at all. Trump thanked Gingrich and Santorum for their willingness to participate nonetheless.

"I would like to thank Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum for having the courage, conviction, and confidence to immediately accept being a part of the Newsmax debate. I believe this would not only have been the most watched debate, but also the most substantive and interesting debate!" he said.

The American people are embarrassed by the gridlock currently taking place in Washington.

The American people should be even more embarrassed that the host of a reality show was planning to moderate a presidential debate.

Nobody was going to the debate. Trump's fanfare about leaving to run as an independent is all BS.

The only thing that's destructive to America, Mr. Trump, are the "starve the beast" policies of the Republican party.

If this is a Shakespearean play, we're quickly approaching Act III, scene ii, and Trump is playing the role of Polonius, hiding behind the curtain.

To thine own self, be true, Donald.

Stick a fork in him, he's done.

I like Newt in the role of Claudius, the paranoid adulterer king, and Mitt, the flop-flopper, in the dual role of Rosencrantz and Gildenstern.

I'd nominate Ann Coulter for Ophelia, but that would just be wrong.

I like Rick Santorum as the hapless Laertes, and Michele Bachmann in the role of Gertrude.

For Hamlet, I'll pick Rick Perry. He likes fights and weapons and stuff. Herman Cain for Horatio, for lack of anything better. "Alas, poor Huntsman," says Hamlet, I knew him from someplace, Herman, but I forgot where."

Rick Perry will meet his well-deserved demise in Act V, when President Obama, well-cast in the role of Fortinbras, strides onto the stage just in time to clean up after this tragedy.

I miss the days when we had actual debate about the policies. Today, it is all about dehumanizing the other party.

How did this happen?

Why is the country so divided?

I think Karl Rove taught the world, that divisive political tactics work. He perfected the technique, and now everyone is doing it.

I also think a large number of people have problems with Obama for personal reasons.

Trump is red meat to the people that hate Obama for personal reasons. I am glad he will not moderate, it would only further fuel the fire.

What we need, is a reasonable Republican candidate, that runs on something other than the "Obama is a socialist" platform. Ron Paul comes close, but he is too much of a purist. A Purist lacks practicality and makes a horrible leader for a nation.

We need a conservative candidate that talks to the issues, to the policy.

But alas, the legacy of Karl Rove is deeply implanted. He taught us it is better to cater to your base, to resist compromise, and to paint the opposition as evil.

Maybe it is time to eliminate political parties altogether. Not a one-party state, but a two party state. Stifle the "Rove Factor"

- No campaign contributions

- No lobbyists

- Just candidates, issues and policies

The candidates "who cut", are Cowards. They are terrible Presidential Candidates. I would not trust them in Foreign Affairs, nor during Confrontations with Leaders, or American people. Most of them should have watched the Wizard of Oz, (Cowardly Lion) and gained some introspect on themselves.

Probably because The Donald has hemorrhoid problems due to defecating on a golden throne toilet in a seated position, instead of squating as is normal for our body design. He should use The Squatty Potty.

The Squatty Potty. It is a footstool that you use to place your feet on, so that you are in a squatting position above the toilet bowl, allowing for a more thorough, cleaner, faster, and less pressure poop.

KATHARINA If I be waspish, best beware my sting.
PETRUCHIO My remedy is then, to pluck it out.
KATHARINA Ay, if the fool could find it where it lies.
PETRUCHIO Who knows not where a wasp does wear his sting?
In his tail.
KATHARINA In his tongue.
PETRUCHIO Whose tongue?
KATHARINA Yours, if you talk of tails: and so farewell.
PETRUCHIO What, with my tongue in your tail? nay, come again. Good Kate; I am a gentleman.

(Act II, scene 1)

That being said, I've also thought that he played the media so that he could push his books and his show. I've never thought that he was serious about running for POTUS.

Has anyone ever seen Donald Trump and P.T. Barnum in the same room together? I didn't think so!

I think that P.T. has found the secret to eterrnal life, but the unfortunate side effect is you turn into a loud-mouthed, bad-haired egomaniac, that's hung like a cocktail frank. Maybe he is now D.T. Barnum?

Trump Corp. was never running for president or anything else. He just discovered yet another way to get on TV without paying for it; actually, getting paid for appearing on TV. That's his shtick and he'll suck that tit as long as the TV people put up with his nonsense.

Exactly Paul M.

I too have thought Trump works for the Obama re-election and now I think Newt might as well….i.e. get rid of Romney and then implode his own campaign. Obama’s billion dollar campaign war chest can buy just about anything, including the presidency.

    #3.5 - Tue Dec 13, 2011 3:38 PM EST

Get real, neither Newt nor Trump work for Obama. They are both opportunists who's only concern is their own personal well being.

And none of this matters, Romney will win the nomination. I know what the polls say, but I can't believe the Republican establishment would allow Newt the party's nomination.

      failed radical socialist Obama

At what has Obama failed? He is the best president since FDR. He passed a big stimulus bill, a landmark healthcare reform bill, student loan reform, an end to the Bush torture regime, the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a hate crimes bill, a successful rescue of the American car industry, resuscitation of the NLRB, passage of New START, the death of Osama bin Laden, withdrawal from Iraq, a decent start on rationalizing Pentagon procurement, repeal of DADT, credit card reforms, unprecedented gas mileage improvements, a second stimulus in 2010, and passage of financial reform legislation.

PS - Before you call someone a socialist you should know what the term means. You, obviously, don't.

Gee nisl- -thanks for pointing all this out. I don't understand why those who support our President don't bring up this stuff more often. Indeed, haters like J.A., et. al. have no idea really WHY they hate Mr. Obama, they just do. It's my strongest belief that a whole lot of this "hatred" (including those in Congress who refuse to work with the President whether or not he presents good ideas for the country) comes straight from their racism and that if he were a Caucasian president, we wouldn't even be having this discussion about what a "failure" he is.

Aha--the plot thickens and bogs down! Well--this was predictable. Trump didn't get but two takers out of the group of candidates, and now, in a fit of pique, will take his toys and go home. What a jerk--we didn't want him for president the first time--and we certainly don't want him now! Unfortunately, his ego can't take "NO!" for an answer (or maybe it is he$$ NO!)

Trump isn't a republican... He's a Trumplican! The only point I steadfastly agree with him on is that Obama's administration has been destructive. If he runs as an independent, he will get a very small percentage of the vote... probably not even effecting any outcome. I wouldn't pull the lever next to his name even though I am an independent.

Trump running as an independent could be problematic for the republican candidate. Just as Ross Perot took votes from Bush Sr., Trump will steal votes from the GOP and help hand the election to Obama. If he runs, the best thing americans could do is NOT vote for him. It would demonstrate to the world that we still have our heads screwed on. He would be a damaging person to have in office, to everyone but the very very rich.

the only people that trump would gather votes from are the loonys like him, He would be a footnote because just about eveyone knows he is only about him and his circus....

Just as Ross Perot took votes from Bush Sr., Trump will steal votes from the GOP and help hand the election to Obama.

Ross Perot actually had a plan, was warning america about the loss of jobs that would happen with the passing of NAFTA (god wouldn't we like that one back) and was very very credible. and he drew a lot of support from Bush Sr....

He would be a damaging person to have in office, to everyone but the very very rich.

Yes he would, even to the very wealthy....

I know that this is a liberal love fest, but even you guys know that trump is nothing but a bad joke, and that is even before he stepped into the political ring.

The Republican Party is being taken for a ride by The Donald. There is no question that Trump is a smart marketing man, and he sees an opportunity to make a splash in a muddled GOP field by talking up the potential of another bid of his own — even though there is zero chance of tat happening. The man has books to sell and TV shows to promote. The GOP would be smart to walk away from Trump, his bizarre presidential debate next month, and his ego… http://www.sunstateactivist.org

I think Phine and GWNO have it nailed.

The republicans never really stepped up to the table except for Newt. Santy was just looking for any exposure he can get.

What was interesting was when Mittney finally said no, (realizing that Paul and Huntsman framed this "debate" well) It would not have gone well for him to accept. Just one question, WHY did it take so long to say "NO"? He actually had to "Think" it over?

Mark Thomas- -to be fair, the Republicans have been working hard at getting Obama re-elected since 2009 when they started believing they could take over the House and the Senate because the American people "as a whole" hate Obama as much as they do. Well, now that the American people as a whole have had some time to see what they elected during the 2010 mid-terms, they recognize who's really to blame that their payroll tax deductions won't be extended, along with so many other changes which would be beneficial to getting our country back on its feet economically, and it sure isn't President Obama and other Democrats.

I think most Americans know what they elected in 2010, most of them ran on a platform of stopping the big spending big government liberals.

Given that they knew what they were electing, the lack of progress is distressing to only the liberal agenda and those that support it. Most I've talked to hope Obama does actually campaign against the "Do Nothing Congress" specifically since the Voters made it a "Do Nothing Congress" on purpose.

Obama got it the day after the election, and everything he has done since is try to show himself and his party as "not the problem" or "blame it on Congress" of which he is failing miserably.

Sounds to me that the liberal left wing of the democrat party has lost touch with the people, like they were really in touch with them in the first place.

There is one candidate that nobody can touch, except to make feeble attempts to label him one way or another. The usual things they wind up with are "Unelectable" "Looney" "Out of Touch" "Crazy" "Lives in the 18th century" When they try to confront him on actual issues he eats their lunch.

Liberals don't want him to get the Nomination because they know that there will be a REAL danger of Obama having his ASS handed to him on election day. The Media knows the SAME fact as much as they are skewing the polls to say otherwise.

I just got back from a trip to Iowa to visit family. Iowa is a SEA of blue Rloveution signs, Very Popular are the Eagle and Ron Portrait signs.

Don't believe all the polls that are being pushed at you, there is something going on in IOWA and we really NEED to pay attention to it. I do not want to sound crazy, but there is a political earthquake happening, a groundshift if you wanna call it that... I've been watching politics for over 50 years the Reagan revolution holds nothing to what I think is coming....

I think the political world is about to change, and I think it starts with the death of the Republican Party as a political force.

I know you are going to jump on me, I got big shoulders, Maybe I was just impacted too much seeing what I did just driving down Iowa streets (davenport) But I have always felt that Ron Paul was going to win Iowa, given the number of campaign signs I saw, if each one is a vote, Ron Paul IS the next President. (at least in Iowa)

Ron Paul has been slowly but steadily gaining support, he is ignored by his own party as much as he is by the democrats, more so considering he is running as a republican. He will have to reckoned with at some point by the republican establishment, whether they like it or not. If he were to be elected I think he would be shut down by both parties in Congress who would simply not legislate much of his agenda, he would have control of the military however and could make many changes in that regard. I like some of his ideas, some I think are untenable, but I will say he is steadfast in his convictions and never changes his tune to suit a particular audience as Gingrich and Romney always do. I don't think you can question his honesty or sincerity about his ideas, and that is probably what most scares the hell out of the republican establishment, he simply will not parrot their talking points. I don't see him winning the general election because I don't think he will get the nomination no matter what republican contests he wins, but he is going to be a spoiler for them, because many of his supporters are as steadfast and honest in their support for him as he is in his convictions, and they will not get behind another candidate just because the republican party wishes for them to do so. Effectively he has been rendered as a third party candidate running as a republican by the fact that they have failed to properly acknowledge him, but at some point they will want his supporters to jump on their bandwagon, they might find they are out of luck with that notion.

Let's try the truth for once in your fictional life. The candidates told you they weren't going to show up, so you got owned, and basically, they said "Donald, you're fired!"

actually, it's a conflict of interest for him to moderate when he could possibly run against them later. he could use the debate to ask them very embarassing questions and make them look foolish and capitalize on it with a run for president.

Um, don't they make themselves look foolish everytime they speak anyways?

Trump isn't a republican... He's a Trumplican! The only point I steadfastly agree with him on is that Obama's administration has been destructive. If he runs as an independent, he will get a very small percentage of the vote... probably not even effecting any outcome. I wouldn't pull the lever next to his name even though I am an independent.

I know it is spitting in the wind, but please name 5 'things' that have been destroyed and then please list the 'thing(s)' that have destroyed them that wholistically belong to this Administration and then list your source(s) of information as to how they have been destroyed.
