Perry slams Romney's 10k 'pocket change,' hones pitch to Christians

AMES, IOWA -- The morning after Mitt Romney challenged Rick Perry to a $10,000 bet, the Texas governor slammed Romney's casual but pricey wager and suggested the sum is merely "pocket change" for his wealthy rival.

"Having an extra ten thousand that you would throw down on a bet just seems very out of the ordinary," Perry told a New York Times reporter after a crowded event in an Ames diner.

"I would suggest to you that ten thousand dollars is pocket change for Mitt," he added

The "pocket change" remark offered a sharp new nettle on Perry's earlier criticism of Romney in an interview with Fox News Sunday, in which he dubbed the former Massachusetts governor "a little out of touch with the normal Iowa citizen." .

Perry's comments came after he held a fire-marshall-capacity event at the Cafe Diem diner in Ames. An otherwise enthusiastic reception was marred by heckling after Perry left the stage, as protestors loudly yelled "why do you hate gay people so much?" and "go back to Texas!"  The governor ignored the comments as the crowd booed dissenters down.

But the charge of anti-gay rhetoric offers a glimpse into the risks of Perry's explicit pitch to social conservatives in Iowa. The campaign has faced criticism for a recent ad that takes aim at gay soldiers serving openly in the United States military.

After stumbling badly in early debates, Perry has dramatically steered his political pitch to one focused on values, Christian faith, and the current White House's "war on religion."

The Tenth Amendment- defending governor, for example, promised on Sunday to fight for a constitutional amendment that "would allow our children to pray in school any time that they would like"

And Perry's faith-based message isn't just over the airwaves.

Immediately after appearing on Fox, he ventured to Waukee megachurch Point of Grace, where he made an explicit plea for worshippers to get involved in the political process.

"I happen to think that people of faith biblically are charged to go and be engaged in that debate," he said during one of two services he attended at the stadium-seating style prayer center.

Perry's message to Christians: Look for a man with a "deep rudder" of values, not one with "all the answers."

It's a humble message from a man whose flubs have dogged him since early in the campaign. Despite his potential upswing after Romney's damaging "bet," those mistakes continue to haunt the Texan governor.

Perry, who last night offered one of the strongest debate performances of his presidential campaign, was asked Sunday morning in an interview to explain his recent bungling of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor's name as well as the number of judges who sit on the high court.

"Well, obviously, I know there are nine Supreme Court justices," he said on FOX. "I don't know how eight came out of my mouth. But the fact is, I can't tell you, I don't have memorized all of the Supreme Court judges."

Seriously, how much more out of touch can Willard be?

There are families in this country who have to LIVE off of 10K per year & Willard acts like it's pocket change!

Speaking of pocket change, anyone else remember when the little boy asked him for a dollar & all Mittens had were hundred dollar bills!

Sometimes it's best to know when to hold em Mittens...

You know, this church and state thing is getting out of control. Gov. Perry, I want to live in a country with a division between church and state!

As for Mittens, I can think of 10k reasons you are now going to lose.

The Iowa Caucus polls on the GOP's pitiful wannabes clearly shows Gingrich is the leader of this sad lot with Perry buried somewhere near the bottom of the pile. If I can use a gross understatement to describe Ricks's predicament, I would say Perry is simply blind to the fact his message is not resonating with the voters.

I believe the Cafe Diem diner in Ames seats 85 people, big whoop, but better than Santorum's crowd of three in a grocery store--the camera crew and one person eating a sample.

Feisty -- The GOP/TP and candidate who represent the 1% is by far Romney, but Gingrich is in the 1% too. How the wealth came about is another issue. Romney inherited wealth and connections, like Dubya. Gingrich entered politics on a teacher's pay, but left very wealthy. Perry also, just not as much wealth as Gingrich. These clowns all live in glass houses, so if one starts throwing stones there's going to be a lot of dangerous glass on the ground.

phinephancy -- Agreed about Separation of Church and State. It's a constant battle explaining to dimwit conservatives that public schools are funded with tax dollars, with teachers as government employees -- it is the STATE and therefore cannot embrace one religion over another (I'd argue the same for prayer in congress) so cannot require a Christian school-led prayer en masse. Kids can still pray in public schools, for example I knew some that blessed their food in the cafeteria, and no one persecuted them.

This business, most notably a supposed attack on Christmas (a favorite holiday of mine though I'm agnostic) is such BS and just playing the victim card with fear-mongering. Pat from Boston pointed out fascist traits of the GOP/TP and their candidates in another thread, and this is why I say conservatives want a fascist theocratic plutocracy--and it's not hyperbole.

Sailcat -- What Perry says in his ad about gays being able to serve openly in the military but kids can't celebrate Christmas unfortunately does resonate with a good number of social conservatives. Gay marriage is right up there with abortion, and Bill O'Really and his claims of Christmas being under attack is why his ratings are high. Perry and his lie that President Obama is attacking religion will bring more cheers from Teabaggers than executions or letting someone die because they don't have health care.

Actually, Perry needs to actually read the book... from that I remember, Jesus avoided political debate. Remember the one where they asked him about taxes? He said there is a picture of Ceasar on it so give it to him because its his.

James Madison said that there is no place in government for religion.. and that was plain in sight.

And Rick Perry made Mitt Romney mad enough, that instead of hitting him in the head, he bet 10,000 dollars that he was wrong, Just as a spoiled brat. $10,000 is nothing for Mitt Romney. It is Chump change, even in the worse times.

Having said that, it does not mean that Rick Perry is not just a hypocrite trying to get a hold of anything. - something - to hold on to his failed Presidential Campaign. Perry woulld spent 10, 000 on a gun or ammuniton without even blinking once. Perry, Bachman and Santorum are toast, and they know it. At this point they are just throwing everything out to see if they can win anything. Ron Paul has a long of young people following him because he sounds like a rebel. -crazy old uncle-

Newt Gingrich is an experienced politician. Nobody should be surprised that he "won" the "debate" last night. He has 30 or 40 years of experiencie talking BS to We the people. He is just another Tea Party candidate that has signed a pledge to Norquist, and is ready to sell his own mother if he can profit from it. No wonder why the Tea Party and the "conservatives" like him so much .

-Yawn- Was anybody still awake at the end of the "debate"?

You're right, "it's not hyprbole" - it's pure stupidity and political bigotry.

The root word of Fascism is fasces, translated as a bundle of sticks signifying the strength of the union - a bundle of sticks are much stronger than the individual sticks symbolizing the power / strength of government over the power / strength of the individual. It is related to the Italian word fascio of which the most pertinent meaning is "labor union".

Does the GOP advocate big government and labor unions, or some other party?

Nazi was the original National Socialist Germans Workers Party. The operative words are Socialist and Workers Party (Unions). Same Question.

The Nazi rose to power exploiting anticapitalist rhetoric they indisputably believed. They believed in the notion of ending class distinction. Hitler conducted class warfare - demonized the rich / Jewish bankers, Jewish corporations, etc. for all the ills. Edit the word Jewish and Obama is doing the exact same thing.

The Nazis believed in national health care, abortion, gun control.

The Nazi were anti- church, even doing away with nativity scenes.

The Nazi believed health care was not a private matter, were antismoking, promoted organic foods, believed in homepathy and herbal remedies and public health drives that foreshadowed today's crusades against junk foods, although I've never heard of them going as went as far as having Eva plant a garden at the Berchtesgaden.

But almost every social issue was the same as the progressives of today. Big government, anti-capitalism, belief in the state not the individual.

The Hitler's greatest gift was his oratory skill. He campaigned on change, movement. Sound like Romney, Gingrich or Bachman - or more like someone else?

Hitler was a revolutionary, a tranformative leader? Who said they were going to be a transformative President? Change, not going back to the past, move forward, etc. Is this the GOP/TP, or what you guys espouse everyday?

All of the above are marks of modern liberalism, the daughter of American Progressivism - the sister of Fascism and Nazism.

Status quo is the mark of conservatives. In the case of America today, the status quo is to conserve - Conserve the victories and legacy of a previous revolution - conserve the great country America became.

You look around and see Nazis everywhere. They don't exist except in exceptionally small numbers of fringe sicko-s, the skin heads that no one acknowledges. But there are surviving relatives, many of the same genetic make-up. To see those with that family resembalance - they are easy - look in the mirror -

then cut the Nazi crap.

What nonsense! Nothing Hitler and Mussolini liked better than the corporate state- destroy unions and let companies use slave labor in their work forces. The workers had no rights and the rich got even richer. Hitler was a nut case who got power and systematically destroyed his enemies, first with propaganda and then with gas chambers. Yet, the people followed him and fought for his war. Henry Ford thought that Mussolini's corporate state was just grand and wanted to copy it here! American progressives have always been most interested in the bill of rights and democracy, not corporate control of our lives. Get your fact straight!

Perhaps what is needed to put presidential candidates back in touch with the less fortunate is this - Give them each a bank account with $100 and they must live on minimum wage for one year, no other help allowed. Then they will truly understand economics. Thet certainly won't be able to make any $10,000 bets.

Rick Perry was lying about what Romney had said in his book and Romney called him out on it. There was not a whiff of chance in that bet. That is exactly why Slick Rick did not take him up on it.

Now Slick is spinning it as much as he can to deflect attention away from the fact the flat out lied. Pathetic. Looser.

What is your source for this? Did Gingrich sign "The Pledge"?

If so, which other candidates have signed the pledge to Norquist? I really have trouble with this signing a pledge to, for, or by Norquist. Is it a binding pledge? Can Norquist "enforce" the pledge and thereby control the candidate or office holder?

Could I make up a pledge, too? This could get quite interesting if there were many different pledges out there.

These conservatives have no clue what any of these terms mean. They call the Affordable Care Act "socialized medicine" even though health care continues to be provided by the private sector for a profit. Whatever, we just need to get Teapublicans out of positions of leadership, and far away from the "red button." And for heavens sake, improve education in this country, starting with reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine and regulating FOX Noise.

    DLMiller --

Working with eventual Speaker Newt Gingrich, Norquist was one of the co-authors of the 1994 Contract with America, and helped to rally grassroots efforts.

During one of the presidential debates, the GOP/TP candidates were asked if they would support a 10 to 1 plan (of 10 cuts in spending to 1 in revenue), and ALL raised their hands against such a plan, including Gingrich. But what will bring any GOP/TP candidate down has been their support for Paul Ryan's end to Medicare plan, which Romney just foolishly joined in on.

Absolutely the most ridiculous thing ever, and it's not the first time I've heard it. A constitutional amendment that would allow children something they're already allowed to do? Is there still anyone in this country who is that foolish to believe this? There's NOTHING stopping any child from praying any time they would like, even in a public school. That's the kind of thing that's allowed in a free country! It's the idea of mandating that everyone MUST pray, and include YOUR religion as part of the curriculum that gets people like me upset; it doesn't matter whether it's Christianity or Islam or Judaism or any other religion - freedom of religion must also allow us a freedom from religion. And in a free country, you have the freedom to ask me to believe in Jesus Christ, and I have the freedom to say keep that garbage out of my face. That's what makes America such a great country. Freedom. You can pander to the extreme Christian right in this race in Iowa, Governor Perry, but all a vote for you is going to show is how crazy out of touch Republicans in Iowa are - or are they? Maybe their vote can surprise us all. Let's hope so. Iowans: send Rick Perry home to Texas. No pressure, Iowa voters. It's only your state's - along with your entire party's - reputation on the line. You've got the internets now: Youtube these people and see what they've done and said. Don't just vote for who someone on the radio tells you to vote for. Do your homework, even if you've never done homework in your life! Otherwise your vote is bought and paid for by the sponsors of those shows.

Roselle, I just checked in with Wikipedia and you are correct, MITT's first name is indeed "Willard." It's understandable why Romney chooses to go by 'Mitt' and not 'Willard', and Obama by 'Barack' and not 'Hussein'. However, not everyone runs away from goofy names. In fact some people run toward them. The first two post-Civil War Democrat presidents, Cleveland and Wilson, eschewed their perfectly OK first names of Stephen and Thomas, choosing instead to go by his their middle names of "Grover" and "Woodrow". My theory on that is that in the late 19th century, "Grover" wasn't so goofy-sounding (the goofy Sesame Street character hadn't been invented yet), and as for Wilson, "Woodrow" only added to the intellectual, puritanical and somewhat nerdly image he carefully cultivated for himself.

            Washington Monthly, Steve Benen:

He was governor from 2003 to 2007, and as Edward Mason and Tom Mashberg explained the other day, Romney failed to impress much of anyone.

“His favorability was basically a straight line down from his honeymoon,” said David Paleologos, director of Suffolk University’s Political Research Center and a longtime Massachusetts pollster. “Sometimes familiarity breeds contempt.”

Romney entered the Massachusetts State House in January 2003 with a flashy favorability rating of 61 percent…. By November 2004, voters were souring, and a Suffolk poll found his favorable rating had dropped to 47 percent.

A year later, that rating sank another 14 points. Just 33 percent of Bay State voters had a favorable opinion of Romney in 2005, according to Suffolk, while 49 percent were unfavorable.

By November 2006, as he closed out his increasingly absentee term, his overall job approval rating had cratered to 36 percent.

Thomas Whalen, a Boston University political science professor, put it this way: “To know Mitt Romney is to dislike him. That is the moral of the story.”

Maybe it’s because he was a GOP governor in a reliably “blue” state? No, Massachusetts has had plenty of modern Republican governors — Weld, Cellucci, Swift — and all were more popular with their Bay State constituents than Romney.

This is all generally overlooked, which is a shame because it seems pretty important. We’re talking about a politician who’s held public office just once, for a grand total of four years. During that one term, his constituents got a good look at his leadership, and came to actively dislike him.

            ********************

And guess what. Newt is no better. He got tossed out. On his @ss.

            1) As for Romney's proposed $10,000 bet, he may have been technically right had the offer been taken. Not sure of that myself, but my guess is that Romney was, and is, splitting hairs between his stand on the 'personal mandate' between then, when he was governor of Massachusetts, and now, as one who strives to be the standard bearer of the party whose central campaign plank is the repeal of the personal mandate which he practically invented. Nothing Romney can say or do will ever change that perception. Nothing. Obamacare, formerly known as Romneycare, is the millstone around Romney's neck that will doom his candidacy should the Republicans be foolish enough to nominate him. And quite frankly, my dear, I won't give a damn. Romney is an unacceptable candidate.

            2) Right, wrong, or indifferent on his facts, Romney was just plain WRONG to engage in outright gambling during a debate. It was a lapse of self-control and good judgment, as unprofessional as it gets.

Some people should not have money...

...Look at the stats on lotto winners, most average 3 to 5 years and they are broke.

Most Republicans are broke in this economy, too; but they still keep voting for the party which does not represent a poor man's interests. I guess there are plenty of people out there who can't handle money - or other forms of responsibility.

At the rate your pitiful GOP wannabes are failing, Obama will be elected by default in '12, american. Hell, with the GOP publicly self-destructing as it has been on national TV, I wouldn't be surprised if the Republicans sit out the 2016 elections, too. It might be a good idea, you know.

With the sophomoric comments, clear lack of knowledge about governance and our judiciary, Perry is the last person who should make a comment about any of his competitors! The bet comment was a throw away line and nothing more. People need to stop taking themselves so seriously.

What we are witnessing is the Republican Party eating its own young. Romney is attacking Gingrich on his character, Perry is attacking Romney on his money, and Bachmann is just her own worst enemy. Gingrich will go up in flames as the other candidates fall behind far enough that they will feel they have nothing to lose by resurrecting Gingrich's old public scandals and recruit Newt's old enemies within the GOP to go after him.

All of this is just part of the Republican Party's tried and true tradition of mud slinging and character assassination as a poor substitute for campaigning on the issues. The GOP will be a wreck by the end of the primary race.

Mitt Romney is not a normal American. He is an out of touch multi-millionaire that has never had to experience the true struggles of daily American life in his entire privileged existence. Mitt may try to cover his platinum soul, but his slip up in issuing a $10,000 bet in such a nonchalant manner is great insight into his character and background. Mitt Romney has probably led to more layoffs of working Americans than any man in this country. His entire fiscal policy platform is designed to give himself as many tax cuts and government giveaways as possible. http://www.sunstateactivist.org

The "pocket change" bit is a lot of fun for one thing if you enjoy the image of Mitt Romney coughing from the smoke of a pile of burning CASH! But, they're all wealthy, aren't they? The only difference between Romster and the rest of them last night was that Mittiman screwed up (and BIG)!

                  Still....!

What a great, new twist in the ever-exciting reality TV we also know as The Republican Primary Campaign!

The whole thing is a freakin' joke! Let's make it a weekly thing and pay them to drop on by! Oh yeah, it IS a weekly thing already! Duh, me!

The republican party has an opening potentially as huge or more than it was in 2010, but they simply can not stand but shoot their own a*ses off instead.

Forget about Democrats--the republican party is it's own worst enemy!

I hope you all get the read the article in the LA Times about Mitt being in touch with the poor & needy. Very insightful this article would be to those who posted negatively here today. One last thing. Look into your own life and ask yourself this simple question. Have you ever said," I will bet you a million dollars", about something to another person? I know I have. It's a big deal when someone else does it now besides you? Not in my book. I think it is funny when folks say Mitt led to more layoffs.....where is the voice of how many jobs he saved and companies he saved that otherwise would have gone under and no one would have been left employed as the company would have ceased to be in business without his restructuring.

I believe that Mr. Romney is being truthful that he did not state that Massachussetts health care would be a good model for the country. However, this juvenile comment clearly indicates that he cannot handle being challenged. How would he respond to a challenge from a foreign leader?

Exactly, Mary. Romney might just as well said neener, neener as to have offered Perry a $10k bet simply to call him on a lie. What could have been an epic slapdown against Perry turned into a revealing peek into Romney's character.

                                It is definitely newsworthy.

Not a republican or a democrat. I feel very strongly that when politicians of any ilk are in the pulpit on Sunday morning, the tax exempt status of that church should be called into question. You cannot accept the benefit of being separate to the state (and not paying taxes) and then put a politician in to stroke the congregation for votes. And before anyone calls me anti-Christian, I am not. But I also don't use my Christian beliefs to pull anyone else's strings. It is mine and it is personal, between my God and me.
