Gingrich, Perry court pastors in South Carolina

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Campaigning in South Carolina on Thursday, both Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry visited a hotel ballroom to seek the support of a crucial coalition here, as well as in Iowa: Evangelical pastors.

They were both featured speakers at the Pastors Policy Briefing, a gathering of roughly 400 church leaders hosted by the South Carolina Renewal Project, a branch of an under-the-radar evangelical group that holds similar events in other major primary states.

Gingrich and Perry– one recently thrust into the glare of public favor, the other trying to get back in it – gave speeches that demonstrated vastly different levels of comfort with religious rhetoric.

“A message that would fit in”

Shortly before Gingrich took the podium, the pastors watched a video about The Response, a prayer meeting hosted by Perry in Texas, spinoff versions of which are being planned in Iowa and South Carolina.

Gingrich first seemed to acknowledge that the tone of the revival-style gathering was one he was less familiar with.

“I was trying to think about a message that would fit in with the Response,” he said.

He spoke, as he has at many campaign events, about America’s founding documents: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Federalist Papers. Not mentioned: the Bible.

In fact, his speech was mostly free of religious references, save his belief that there will be “a great awakening in the sense of Whitefield,” an influential revivalist preacher in the mid-1700’s.

“I think that there will, in fact, be an astonishing desire by the American people to pursue freedom in a spiritual way,” he continued.

Gingrich did ask for the audience’s prayers when he described his presidential ambitions, seemingly still coming to terms with the possibility of his own success.  

“The most sobering thing that has happened to me this year is the very real possibility I’ll end up as president,” he said. “It’s one thing to run. That’s a big jump. Then you think you might be the Republican candidate. That’s a big jump. The other thing to think is as a Republican candidate you might beat Barack Obama. That’s pretty big. Then you suddenly realize if those three things happen, I would then have to serve as president,” he said.

Some of those in the audience seemed skeptical of Gingrich’s immigration policy, which would allow some longtime illegal residents of the U.S. to stay here. Gingrich addressed those concerns during a question-and-answer session after his speech.

“These are people who would be married, have children, grandchildren, have ties in your communities, may well be in some of your churches, candidly,” he said.

“I think churches would become sanctuaries,” he added, making a compassionate appeal. “I think you would find people who would just say, ‘we’re not going to let you take our church members away.’”

Gingrich was also asked whether he would “seek God first” when making decisions as president.

“I feel like I have to do that,” Gingrich said simply, to scattered “amens.”

“That is my message”

Unlike Gingrich, who added a few mentions of revival and prayer to an otherwise standard speech, Perry tailored his entire address to his Evangelical audience – clearly a group with which he was comfortable.

“A lot of those that criticized said it’s not the role of a public official to be involved calling people together to pray,” he said of hosting The Response. “This wasn’t about me. This was about Him.”

Sprinkling Biblical passages throughout his speech, he said that he keeps Joshua 1:9 (“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged…”) behind his desk at the statehouse.

“That is my message,” he said, displaying none of Gingrich’s apparent difficulty in finding a topic of discussion.

Perry also related some Biblical figures to himself. “Even if you suffer for righteousness sake, you are blessed,” Perry said, quoting from the book of Peter.

“It wasn’t lost on me about who said that: Brother Peter,” Perry said, pastors nodding in understanding. “Peter whose mouth sometimes seemed to work faster than his brain. I can really relate to Peter,” he continued, the audience laughing with him.

His speech also took a turn for the biographical, speaking about his mother’s influence on his spirituality.

“If there was a revival within driving distance, we were there,” he said. “I say, Jesus Christ is the reason I’m saved by his grace, but it was my momma who helped me get there,” he said, jokingly.

Perry struck a humble tone when speaking of his own presidential prospects. “I know whether this journey leads me to Washington D.C or it leads me back to Austin, Texas, I know His will will be done,” he said.

But while his fate may rest in the hands of God, Perry also applied his new consultant-made, Evangelical-friendly campaign strategy.

“We have an administration that is, from my perspective, engaged in a war against religion,” he said, slamming Obama’s policies on abortion, gay marriage and gays serving openly in the military.

Perry also briefly took on Gingrich, when he was asked to weight in on the suggestion that some illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the U.S. “Newt and I disagree on that issue. I’m not for amnesty in any form or fashion,” he said.

While Gingrich tried for a compassionate appeal, saying some pastors might have illegal immigrants in their churches, Perry seemed to avoid looking “soft” on the issue, calling his Texas DREAM Act, in which some illegal immigrants can pay in-state college tuition, “a state sovereignty issue,” steering clear of his past assertion that the law’s opponents are heartless.

He also took an aggressive tone on border security.

“When I’m the president of the United States, within 12 months, that border will be secure and shut down. Count on it!” he said, his tone noticeably harder. “I’m sorry. I get a little bit…” he trailed off as the audience drowned him in applause.

While Gingrich received a light ovation for saying that he felt that he would “have to” be guided by God in the White House, Perry’s answer to a similar question was more enthusiastically received.

“I told my congregation that I would endorse the man that would not compromise his faith. Are you that man? “ A pastor asked Perry.

“I’m not answering you. I’m answering to the Lord Jesus Christ. Because I’ve already answered that question for him, and that answer is yes,” he said.

But addressing a room of Evangelicals did leave Perry vulnerable to questions about Mormonism, the faith of two of his presidential opponents. At the very end of the question-and-answer portion, Perry was urged to “say Mormonism is a cult.”

As some members of the audience applauded, Perry left the stage without saying a word.

A parting image

Both Gingrich and Perry participated in a group prayer after their speeches, in which the pastors were invited to approach the candidates, lay their hands on them and worship.

Standing on the podium, Gingrich was flanked by a few pastors, who, heads bowed, reached for his shoulders as Luis Cataldo, a minister who hosted The Response with Perry, said a prayer.

But Perry, who had left the stage by the time the prayer began, attracted many more pastors to his side. Kneeling, he was almost completely concealed by those surrounding him as Cataldo began the prayer.

When the prayer was over, Perry rose slowly, hugging and shaking the hands of those who surrounded him with an ease that suggested that for Perry, unlike for Gingrich, this gathering was as familiar to him as those revivals his mother used to bring him to.

Something to note about that... Gingrich converted to Catholicism in order to marry Calista, and for no other reason. This is very common in order to marry a Catholic (or Jewish) partner. Gingrich has ZERO religious convictions.

In fact he is the exact opposite of any "family values" belief the religious-Right purports. Not just multiple marriages and affairs, but also not paying child support, divorcing while his wife was receiving cancer treatment, and flip-flopping on abortion. Any pastor who embraces Gingrich will therefore be just as hypocritical and despicable as the adulterers, Newt and Calista, neither of whom should be in the White House (for a long list of reasons).

Of course Newt has no ethics, even per the Ten Commandments and stealing, but further to my post above and complete lack of "family values," he took money from a charity for poor children, which he established in order to launder it into his campaign. How low can a person go?

Beverly -- I forgot about Perry (Ooops). His ad about how gays can serve in the military but kids aren't allowed to celebrate Christmas was SO over the top even the red-meat crowd surely found this as offensive as I did. And I don't mean from the point of view of Christ, but from an intellectual dishonesty perspective--it's a blatant lie, the Christmas thing, WTF?

Pat -- Definitely the rabid far-right are supporting Gingrich purely out of irrational hatred for our president. Why worry about the integrity of a candidate when the supporters have no integrity either. They are a bunch of hypocritical simpletons, and the Left has known this for a long time now.

When they say anyone but Obama, they mean it. They would support a serial killer. I've mad the joke that since many are low-information voters, they would support John Hinkley because of his affiliation with Reagan.

The slogan for conservatives should be "How low can we go!"

Maybe it is the Catholic in me, but this really bugs me. This approval by the evangelical right. Are we a government of the people, by the people and for the people - meaning ALL people, no matter the faith, or are we to become a theocracy? If so, what it the faith of state to be? I don't see the Jews, Mormons, Muslims, Catholics, or other faiths welcomed in this crowd.

As the resident Catholic here, if anyone should be offended you would have thought it would be me. However, the church had its problems with it, and has to pay the price. Just like anything else, though, there some truly wonderful, good priests around and maybe someday things will be as they should. Until then, we have to face the truth. We had/have priests who broke the laws of man and God.

And I can be a good Catholic and Progressive at the same time, so there!

As a former Catholic, I can say a few things and that's one of them. If the scumbag Catholic leadership had not protected the pedophiles (be it a small minority or not) then I probably would not have this attitude.

Further, I've had so many family members turned out by the Catholic churches because divorces were not approved or babies REFUSED BAPTISM because the hypocrite priest didn't like something and in waltzes Blingrich who could hardly be turned down because of his power and influence........ YEESH!!!

I absolutely agree with you. Now, I am still a practicing Catholic, I haven't had the experiences you have, I guess. And my parish is very progressive on issues of divorce, etc. As a matter of fact, my priest said the only beef he has with politics is the abortion issue (I can understand that), otherwise, he is a Progressive all the way!

One would think that, with no joe's long personal acquaintanceship with bigotry, intolerance, and hatred, she would be better equipped to identify it when she sees it elsewhere. And, yeah, I am really luck in my parish. For example, I am pro choice. Any issues regarding abortion should be between a woman and whoever (God, church, whatever). Best way to avoid abortion - stop unwanted pregnancies - even my priest agrees with that. That whole do not legislate morality thing.

newdayDAWNING, I think the one that got me right away was Labor Power Is Suppressed, although Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts and Fraudulent Elections we can certainly see happening right before our eyes. Actually we can relate to the entire list, can't we?

I surely hope the GOTV happens big next year. We have to fix Congress badly. I read just a few minutes ago from a comment on Huffington Post that Florida voters are going to do all they can to unseat Congressman Allen West. They have a few really good candidates who can beat him.

We here in MA are going to work hard to beat Senator Brown.

Every state needs to get to work. We're going in the wrong direction because of clueless ignorant people we the voters put into office. We have the power to throw them out. We need to use it.

Newt is a faux historian; my reason for disdain toward Newt's racist comments including let poor kids mop floors in the schools. Moreover, either Newt is trying to either rewrite history or didn't work hard enough on that Phd.

Palestinians were in the Ottoman before the Ottoman Empire was the Ottoman Empire. It was the Palestinians land which was invaded by the Ottomans. A Black Muslim General, Amr ibn al-As, in 641 AD conquered Egypt. After the death of the Prophet Muhameed, the eruption came about in Middle East, India, and even Spain where the Jewish people were. The Spanish people re- conquered their land in the 1400s; and kicked the Jewish people, & Arabs out.

Beverly, the problem with the Republican Party base is they don't care. Facts aren't important to them. Only talking points are, which are provided by Limbaugh and Luntz. It's how they get through their day. Hating everyone but those in their own little demented community known as the GOP base.

These Teabaggers claim to be all about the constitution, but one must wonder if they have even read it.

phinephancy-4252115 -- There are a lot of rising stars in the Democratic Party, like Elizabeth Warren, and possibly others like Beau Bidden if he cooses to join politics (to name a couple). The Republican Party, not so much.

If Dems can continue to expose the hypocrisy and lies of the Teapublicans, and then hopefully regain a majority in congress and use that majority toward economic recovery and balancing the budget, they could enjoy control for a very long time. Especially in view of changing demographics. And why conservatives, especially those to the far-Right, are so terrified and desperate.

This is the real news of today--not the dog and pony show in Iowa. We should definitely pay attention and worry about candidates who feel they have to conform to any religious test in order to court the favor of the Republican base. The Founders of the nation were trying to do their best to keep us away from the notion of a theocracy. The Pastors Policy Briefing is a litmus-test forum and should be rejected by serious candidates.

I am not sure how much clout the church has in getting someone elected anymore. At election time, ministers tell you to vote your conscience, usually understood to mean abortion and gay rights, and then the people go out and vote. I think last election alot of them must have decided they can't force their beliefs on anyone and went on to vote democrat.

Newt has no chance. Which is why the lame street media is hyping him. Ron Paul is the best, but once again, an honest man has no chance of getting electing in America. Mitt is a Mormon. The best option at the minute. If its not him and Sarah, suspect we will once again be stuck with the kid from Hawaii. I know the left wing nuts are counting on Obama to raid my wallet for them. It all they know how to do. Ron Paul is the only one who cares about America more than being elected. Four more years with Obama and its all over but the I told ya so crowd. Americans have no shame or honor. They are willing to stick their grandkids with the bills run up by the welfare crowd and the military industrial complex. Shame shame.

    The way I see it is the hatred and bitterness is coming from the right as in Obama can't do a thing you guys like. But how about remembering that a nation divided against itself cannot stand? So it doesn't matter who starts what, both sides have to end the hatred and bitterness. We are better than that. We need to become the United States again. The way people take over is by dividing everyone so they can't stand each other. That needs to start ending now. We should be united against anyone no matter who they are that wants to buy our country although I am not sure what they want to do with it when they own it? .So we need to make sure that anyone no matter which party shouldn't be elected who has been bought in the past. So that ends Newts campaign right now! We only have to get people to realize it. Surely you have someone decent in the republican party to run.

      The problem with Newt is he is the Supreme Hypocrite, most voters of all parties remember his attack on Clinton just to find out he was doing the same or worst! All we heard from the right was "morals and family values" well clinton was wrong and so is Newt!! These Evangelic leaders "forgiving" Newt is a joke - six mos ago they were attacking him??

      Obama called for a "super committee" to fix our debt problems and then ignored their plan.

        I can only hope the Tea Party folks of South Carolina aren't stupid enough to vote for Gingrich. He owes more favors to the DC elites and establishment than Bill Clinton. He is a Rhino progressive to the max. If you want the same ole, same ole then vote for Gingrich. If you want change, then vote Ron Paul or Michelle Bachmann. Quit listening to the BS on the news, it's all meant to nudge you to who they want you to vote for. Use your good common sense.

                    Evangelical christians are fine with it, actually. They operate on a slicing scale of hypocritical self-interest, you see. That means if it benefits them they are prepared to change their morals or, at the very least, look the other way. When it comes to candidates who godless mormons, however, most right wing christian extremists are firm about rejecting them...unless, of course, it is in their best interest to embrace them, in which case you can refer to the Christian's Sliding Scale of Hypocritical Self-Interest again.

                          Religion is a hard subject to speak on in politics. As a Christian myself, I don't think there's anything wrong with having God being the head of your life and trying to reform your life and become a better person as Newt is claiming to be. But then you see this man talk about the Palestinians, and Iran and Poor people and financial hardships of the poor (as i was unsatisfied with any of there answers on how they would help get America back on a path to prosperity when they were asked that question) and you realize it's all phony. Same thing with Mr. Perry, Somewhere in the Bible it says "judge not or you too shall be judge am I right???!!! So now that he's attacking gays instead of letting the God of all the people render is his own judgment is wrong. This is where also the Constitution gets in Mr. Perry's way of deciding what's right and wrong in America. The fonding fathers never wanted government to be involved in family choices of religion or how they worship, in other words stay out of people's lives and let God decide what to do them. So you heard them say they respect the tenth amendment of the consitution ,what about the fourth amendment separation of church and state??!!!
