2012: Paul Ryan revisited.

“Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry are scheduled to address a ‘Pastors and Pews’ gathering in South Carolina on Thursday, giving both presidential candidates the opportunity to court Christian conservative leaders in the key primary state,” Politico writes.

BACHMANN: She won’t attend the Trump debate either.

GINGRICH: He leads in a national FOX poll 36%-23% over Romney. Paul is third with 12%, Perry 8%, Bachmann 5%, Santorum 4%, Huntsman 2%, per Political Wire.

“As media scrutiny and attacks by rivals intensify, Newt Gingrich is facing the first test of a new discipline on display as he seeks the Republican presidential nomination,” Bloomberg reports. “It’s a measurement sure to come as critics, and Gingrich himself, have said the temperament question -- can he hold his tongue and keep his temper -- is one of the biggest unknowns of his rising campaign.”

Peggy Noonan, per GOP 12: “Ethically dubious? True. Intelligent and accomplished? True. Has he known breathtaking success and contributed to real reforms in government? Yes. Presided over disasters? Absolutely. Can he lead? Yes. Is he erratic and unreliable as a leader? Yes. Egomaniacal? True. Original and focused, harebrained and impulsive—all true.” But: “He is a human hand grenade who walks around with his hand on the pin, saying, ‘Watch this!’”

PERRY: “Once again, intense backlash has caught the Rick Perry campaign flat-footed,” The Texas Tribune writes. “Opposition to Perry's new ad denouncing the repeal of ‘don't ask, don't tell’ and declaring that he'll end ‘Obama's war on religion’ took on new life Thursday as critics slammed the governor for pandering to evangelical Christians.”

ROMNEY: The Romney campaign is hitting Gingrich on the Paul Ryan plan, but National Review notes: “[W]hile Romney never criticized Ryan’s plan, he didn’t immediately embrace it, either.”

The Washington Post’s fact checker gives Romney three Pinocchios for his assertions that he is “ ‘bowing’ to foreign leaders” and for “his propensity to play golf.” “Both of these appear to be unfair shots, taken out of context. The notion that Obama has “bowed to dictators” is basically false, and it is debatable whether he bowed to any leader but the Japanese emperor. Reasonable people can disagree on what happened with the Saudi and Chinese leaders, but that still does not excuse the blanket statement that Romney made. The golfing Web site, while amusing, is also out of bounds. Yes, Obama golfs a lot. But he also has not taken much time off, which is what the Web site strongly suggests when it urges putting Obama on ‘permanent vacation.’”

SANTORUM: On the Donald Trump debate, he said in a statement: “Many of my opponents jockeyed to be the first to fly up to New York and use Donald Trump for a photo op and no doubt try and secure an endorsement.  But when Donald wants to moderate a debate – they refuse to attend. That’s what’s so wrong with politics today – hypocrisy. At this critical time in our nation’s history, just weeks before Iowan’s cast this important vote – many of the other candidates want to hide behind TV ads and mail pieces.  We plan to be there front and center in person to debate Newt directly, and if it’s just the two of us, we’re fine with it.”

So, the Christian Conservatives love Gingrich, I guess because Gingrich has such high moral standards. Go figure, it doesn't make sense to me.

It is not called hypocrisy. It is called "not playing the role of God and judging man." You can have family values and still fall short of the glory. You liberals just want to find anything to discredit religion. If you don't believe in God or anything religious; then don't comment on it nor even talk about it. In the end we ALL will answer when the book is opened.

Having 3 wives or a dozen doesn't matter anymore. What I'm wondering is how people could support him after all of the ethics violation crap he was getting hit with? Plus, saying that children should become janitors and mop floors and clean toilets because it would teach them a work ethic AND (here is the kicker, folks) they would be far cheaper than union employees! Damn! LOL! That sounds so very bad on a whole host of levels. I couldn't believe my ears when he said it. He should have left that part out at the very least. Haha! Woowee...That was a good one. :-D

Another thing that is just a personal note and doesn't have much of an impact on his being presidential is that his wife looks so fake it's unreal. Her hair looks like a helmet. She reminds me of Tammy Baker. If she ever shows up to one of newt's myriad book signing events with shiney pink hair I'm going roll with laughter. All of her high polishing does certainly brand them as very superficial in my book.

Dogma, Divorces do not count and do not make a person unfit to be President, so we agree there just wonder how many of the liberals posting about his infidelity and marriages have done the same thing. As for the ethics violations crap, I believe he was only found "guilty" on one violation out of 84. As for his statement about children performing some janitor duties for pay, hell when I went to elementary school in the 40s and early fifties we had to do most of that for free, just one of the chores required of the students.

    *Sorry about the double posting*

Well, sfcret, I certainly remember going out into the school yard and picking up litter and what not. Nothing wrong with that but having the kids do the mopping, etc. particularly to save some money on union workers is just damn tacky. I can appreciate saving money but you have to draw the line somewhere and there are a lot of things that were done in the 40s that we would not do today.

As for the ethics violations crap, I believe he was only found "guilty" on one violation out of 84.

I'll have to look it up and refresh myself on the details. I'm no liberal and I'm not so stupid as to think that the dem's were NOT thinking up every violation in the book that they could possibly pin on newt, however, I thought the one violation out of 84 was more of a plea bargain of sorts. He admitted to one and the dem's agreed because that is all it would take to sink him and he knew he was done anyway because his own people, the rupublicans, were shunning him.

Neither of us have a clue on that but I would bet that it has happened. The difference is that democrats don't typically run on "family values" nor do they legislate from their holy book. When you talk the talk you had better walk the walk and you know that's true no matter what you're talking about.

Gerry, Obama has taken more in campaign contributions from the so called 1%ers than any President in history. Get a life and get real, who do you think are buying these 35,500 dollar campaign dinners, and who Obama is excepting to raise one billion dollars from, it should isn't from the poor and middle class.

        #2.2 - Fri Dec 9, 2011 1:53 PM EST

sfcret, I think you are mistaken. OpenSecrets.org says Romney has taken more money from the 1% than Obama. Obama has raised much more money than Romney, but almost half of Obama's donations are from small individual donations and only around 1% of Romney's donations are from small donors. Romney's largest contributors are banks, and Obama's largest contributors are computer and telecommunications companies and universities.

Folks, learn from Maine's experience. Being governed by a right wing fruit cake, means tax cuts for the rich ($400 million cut this year), followed by cuts to services for the elderly, mentally ill, and struggling parents, (65,000 Mainers cut from Medicaid, Head Start cut, group homes for seniors and the disabled cut, services for diabetics cut, etc.) On top of that, you get to hear a lot of rhetoric about the unemployed being lazy, immigrants unwelcome, teachers demonized, and gauche language in general coming from the so called "religious conservative" occupying the top office.

Elect a Republican and not only finally get rational budget decisions, where some semblance of sanity is imposed on out of control government spending, but as a bonus you get to hear the whining moonbats bawl and dissemble endlessly about how grandma gets thrown in the street starving, unless you hire more unionized public sector moonbats for lifetime employment at fat salaries and fatter pensions.

Bob- nice spin. However it was you who was pushing the "death panels" low those couple of years ago. As for the unions, you are just an idiot. I am pretty confident (unless of course you can prove me wrong with some facts and stats) that most of the union members are getting paid a fair wage as opposed to the fat salaries you like to blather about. I am a 7 year union member with a MAster's degree and I am not even cracking 50K in my job, so lets not be to hasty in our generalizations. I happen to think my wage is fair. Yes, there are certainly inequities, but there are plenty of those outside of the realm of unions too...start with the healthcare industry. Have fun wasting your fingers on the keyboard, you could be using them to do some real work, you accomplish nothing here. Like your own voice?

          As of last August 2011,

So far, President Obama has taken 61 vacation days after 31 months in office.
At this point in their presidencies, George W. Bush had spent 180 days at his
ranch where his staff often joined him for meetings. And Ronald Reagan had taken
112 vacation days at his ranch. Among recent presidents, Bill Clinton took the least time off -- 28 days.

So bob, are you saying that our president takes too much time off? The worst terrorist attack in US history and two wars yet bush doesn't have a problem taking twice as much time off as Obama. As a matter of fact, the dem presidents seem to take the least amount of time off.

Newt and Romney have both flip flopped so much, either one of them could have a one man debate with themselves. If they weren't republican candidates for president they would be undergoing treatment for schizophrenia.

It is not just a matter of republicans having to hold their nose to vote for these candidates, they will have to cover their eyes, and plug their ears as well, they will have to swallow hard and choke down their own words about family values, Christianity being reflected by their leaders, Washington insiders corrupting the government, professional politicians and lobbyists controlling government, ect, ect, ect. The two leading republican candidates make a mockery of most of what republicans have long claimed they stand for, so I guess you just can't believe the republican platforms anymore, why should you, they evidently don't.

I can't believe what I am now going to say. I actually feel sorry for the GOP. They have splintered themselves into so many groups and have generated such hate for anyone not like their particular group that I think we may be seeing the end of the Grand Old Party. Even as a Progressive, I see the need for a reasonable, opposition party. I don't see that today.

They have trapped themselves with their own ideas and actions. For instance they decided that Obama can't have any successes will they control the House, so then neither can the house, unless you count gridlock as a success, obviously the electorate does not, as their poll numbers are the worst in history. They push the Christian thing to the extent that while they won't admit it, they will never elect a Mormon to the Oval Office. They don't like unions, they resent somebody that needs unemployment benefits, they ridicule people that need food stamp assistance, they act like no republican has ever collected these benefits. The list of extreme positions goes on and on and the tent gets smaller and smaller, in the end if your positions and policies only benefit a small percentage of the electorate, then you will get that small percentage of the votes, because even the most misguided ideologues will vote to eat.

I remember when they said the same thing about a Catholic and I also remember people saying that the country was not ready and would not elect an African American. As a Republican I don't hate unions but I do believe that public unions need to be reined in as they are crippling a lot of cities and states. We don't hate people drawing unemployment but feel the continuous extensions have to stop or be paid for by cutting spending in other programs. Personally I am not real pleased with our current candidates, but I can support Romney or Gingrich for President, or just about anybody but Obama.

Hey Sarge, you are a little more reasonable than some republicans, and there was never any denying that Catholicism is a Christian faith, the oldest and original Christian faith as a matter of fact. Mormonism is not a faith based on Christ, not that it matters to me, but many republicans have made it a huge issue for themselves, and it is just my opinion but I feel that is why his numbers are frozen, and Newt's are rising. It seems they would rather have a Catholic with several divorces than a non Christian, and they have discounted Huntsmann altogether.

            #6.6 - Fri Dec 9, 2011 5:31 PM EST

Public Unions have been around for 70 years at the very least, they were never a problem until local governments stopped collecting taxes, and started offering vast giveaways of tax payer funds and assets to attract business and build stadiums for wealthy team owners who don't need it. Lastly the problems we have will not be solved by just a change in the Oval Office as much as many people would like to believe that to be so. The president can not pass a budget or enact a single law or tax policy, if you think simply electing a republican as president will solve anything, Reagen and Bush have proved beyond a shadow of a doubt it will not, we were in far worse shape at the end of Bush's terms than when he took over.

One thing I've never to get a grasp on is why do Christians admire someone who has failed at their own personal life over someone who has succeded? Why do they give Newt the benefit of the doubt over his failed marriages and personal problems with ethics, but then won't give Mitt any credit for having a sucessful marriage and as far as we know, fairly clean on the ethics issue?
