Former VP Quayle to endorse Romney

Former Vice President Dan Quayle will endorse Mitt Romney for president tomorrow at a campaign event in Arizona.

The endorsement will take place in Paradise Valley, Arizona, which is located within the congressional district of Ben Quayle, the former Vice President's son, who was elected to the House in 2010 and has yet to make an endorsement in the presidential race.

Quayle, who was vice president under President George H. W. Bush, represented Indiana in the House of Representatives for two terms, and also served in the senate. He has reportedly remained active in Republican fundraising circles, particularly in Arizona, where he has a home.

Romney met with former President Bush at the latter's Houston home last week. The meeting was described by aides to Romney as a chat between friends; Bush did not offer his endorsement.

Quayle is the forerunner of Palin and everyone who has come since.

Feisty, for dinner tonight it is taco salad with mint iced tea. Since the Jags are on MNF (that will be a good game to sleep through, although we did advert the blackout), the game time menu is homemade hot pretzels, caribbean jerk wings and brownies, all served with beer.

Man, talk about a sucky game.

I'm pulling for the jags - the Chargers are all about sticking it to us for a new stadium. apparently they have not gotten the memo - San Diego is flat broke, a condition due in large part to the Padres' new stadium.

No thanks - the Chargers can move to LA and enjoy all the support they'd get up there. At least we KNOW they will not win the super bowl this year, and support is way down. In fact they can barley sell out the existing stadium as it is. No appitite for huge public outlays for crappy teams. Thank god - people tend to get all supportive and giving when the team wins. That's how the Padres got their new digs.

No more public money for private buisinesses. They are all millionaires and billionaires. They want new shiny staduims they need to buy them their own damn selves.

Besides without a team here we'd get more tv games.

Spanky, the Jags have been holding Jacksonville hostage over stadium stuff for years. That's we moved down to the next county. The speculation here is that when LA gets its new stadium, the Rams will move back and the new owner here, Shadid Khan, will move the Jags to St. Louis.

Must admit, we here in Florida do not support our pro teams anywhere in the state very well. I mean, a beautiful 85 degree Sunday, do you want to go to the beach, play golf, or sit in the sun baking watching your team lose?

Packers rock AM. Owned by the public. No calls for taxpayer subsidized stadiums. Plus they are kinda good right now.

All these sports league are total scams, that stick it to the public taxpayers.

and for what, so a bunch of drunken idiots can have the pleasure of paying $150 for a ticket and $10 for a beer?

The Padre Stadium really screwed us. We have been "Enron by the sea' long before that was the fashionable thing to be.

You never see a city paying to builda huge store front for WalMart, just idiot sport teams. and for what?

Now just about all municipalities are doomed.

AM & Spanky, true story, a friend of ours, for his son's birthday spent a father/son day and went to a Jaguars game. Total bill for the day $740.00 That was for 2 tickets, parking, 2 sodas and 2 hot dogs. And the NFL think people can afford this!

I also wonder how much those folks drop that get all tore down drinking beer during the game!

Spanky --

You never see a city paying to builda huge store front for WalMart, just idiot sport teams. and for what?

Well, sorry to disappoint, but the residents of Brown County, Wisconsin, in particular, and all of us, in general, are paying sales taxes for Lambeau Field.

And Walmart demands -- and gets -- local tax breaks practically everywhere it goes, notwithstanding that voting for those tax breaks spells doom for all the mainstreet businesses that will eventually have to close.

And why do you suppose Walmart gets those tax breaks, Spanky?

Think about that.

phinephancy --

And the NFL think people can afford this!

Actually, the NFL doesn't CARE if ordinary people can afford it.

Because they've got BIG TV contracts, too.

I prefer my big old HI DEF TEEVEE.

THe parking is free, the beer is cheap, and the bathroom is right around the corner.

Go Jags.

Sadly though I think the Chargers are going to kick their butts. Hope I'm wrong.

    #1.13 - Mon Dec 5, 2011 5:44 PM EST

AM, the county I live in, and Jacksonville are really bad about the tax breaks they give businesses here. But they are sure quick to add a bit to the sales tax, gas tax or property tax.

Becasue the locals give them to them AM.

WalMart is way better in just about all respects than the 'main street businesses.'

But not around here AM. Around here they will not let WalMart build super centers, cause our city council is beholden to the unions. It's gone through several legal and vote battles.

I think they now have to let them build them.

AM, I absolutely LOVE shopping at the small mom& pop stores. I like to go downtown and shop at our local merchants. And I try to as much of my groceries as possible from local markets.

While the town I live in is a tourist town, it is small and we do have lots of small businesses and restaurants that are locally owned. They always have the best food and merchandise.

Me AM? I prefer to get the best value for my money, which is often, but not always WalMart.

And I never, ever shop Nordys and refuse to set foot in Neimans. I leave that to Ms. Spanky, much to my chagrin. I get my jeans at Target and work clothes at Men's Warehouse, but only when it's buy one get one free.

As for WalMArt- all governments LOVE Walmart. Total cash cow.

A single WalMart store, and there have to be at least 4-5 here, generates millions in tax revenue everyday. The sales taxes alone are huge.

So I'm guessing that's why the politicians like Wal Mart. And Costco, and Sam's and Best Buy...

So they give them a break to get them in their jurisdictions. cause if they don't someone else will - cause of all the cash.

You buy locally? Correct me if I'm wrong but that sweet Accord you roll in did not come from Wisconsin, or even Detroit, correct?

Do they even assemble Accord in the US, or only in Japan?

Bev, we even have the yellow ones for our outside light. Been in now for 3 years and we leave it burning a lot. Just wish they would make a little one to fit in my ceiling fans' lights.

My daughter also bought the LED Christmas lights last year and loves them. Think I may look into that myself.

I think a battle of the wits between the two would be funny. But unlike not being able to spell [and who am I to say anything about that] - Biden flat out plagiarized the English dude's speech back in the late 1980's.

That raises above stupid into intentional misconduct.

The VP mattered when Cheney cast his vote as a tie-breaker to pass the 2003 Bush tax cuts that only applied to the rich--during time of war.

And of course, if the President dies... In the case of Gingrich, my guess is his cholesterol level is way up there. The only one in worse health is Chris Christie. Even Ron Paul's age is less of a concern in comparison.

Biden has done an excellent job during his career on behalf of blue collar workers and first responders, the military (along with Michelle Obama), but one of his biggest strengths is foreign policy experience due to Senate seniority and committee positions. The snarky comments about Biden being in Greece just shows how ignorant the poster is.

Ultimately, VP Biden with all his faults is still WAY better than any GOP/TP presidential candidate currently running. And keep an eye on Beau Biden--really sharp.

Great citation there TruePatriot - those nasty tax cuts for the rich.

The very same that Obama signed into law all by himself, also during a time of war.

Yep TruePatriot, you nailed it - great minds like Obama and Cheney think alike. Tax cuts for the rich are the thing to do. Why I have heard Obama say it himself.

But thanks for pointing that out for us. You really can't hear it enough.

Oh and TruePatriot - Biden is in Greece and he did make a not too appreciated crack that he was there to bail them out.

But you are the opposite of ignorant so already knew that. That's what I love about you.

                        Rock on TruePatriot. :)

True, you are right, and I stand corrected. Usually, though, the vote is cast for the person at the top of the ticket - and that person USUALLY picks someone who could do the job if something were to happen to them. However, there have been some real nuts that we are lucky to not have had to experience in the top spot. And one, to the country's ultimate sorrow, was not qualified and did become president - Andrew Johnson.

Biden is the guy. Obama is the scholar. I think they are great and are working as hard as they can to help the working class. Too bad the devil has infiltrated the GOP. Rich self serving. Greedy, ungodly , sexually twisted and still they run for office knowing Fox news will spin it all away.

After seeing the headline announcing Quayle was bestowing his endorsement upon Romney, I thought I would stop by and see how many "Romney is doomed!" comments had been posted.

Romney is indeed doomed, by the way.

That's a good question, phinephancy. Romney has a crippled image and his religious affiliations grate against the tender sensibilities of many groups within the GOP. He is a damaged product. Gingrich, on the other hand, is a walking time bomb with scandals and closeted skeletons dogging his every step. Sooner or later he will explode in a huge blast of old crimes, shady deals, and embarrassing revelations. Newt is a liability, not a genuine candidate.

Verdict: Romney will get the reluctant nod from the GOP's power brokers but Newt will go down swinging, and it will be interesting to see if he takes anyone down with him.

Sailcat, any chance, do you think, that the GOP electorate say "no" to both and looks at Paul or Huntsman?

Neither Paul or Huntsman have the funding necessary to stick out a long, bitter, and expensive fight in the primaries with any expectation of coming out as a leader. Romney, Gingrich, and Perry have large war chests and are prepared to go the distance, barring any personal scandals that might bring them down (Gingrich). Huntsman and Paul are simply going to be swamped by the publicity their colleagues' campaign machines are going to generate for their respective pin-headed wannabes. I would almost say one or both are campaigning for vice president, given the long-shot chances they have at taking the big prize.

Could Huntsman be setting himself up now for name recognition for 2016 when, it is expected, the "A" team of the GOP field is expected to run?

That's a very good point, phinephancy. I expect that a crushing defeat at the polls next November will force the GOP to retreat from the hard right turn it's made in recent years. When the Republican Party tries to regain the moderate voters it has lost, Huntsman will be waiting for them. He will have a recognizable name, he will be regarded as a person of integrity and intelligence, and he won't carry the taint of the sort of destructive right wing politicking in which the GOP is currently indulging. Huntsman will be the GOP's golden boy in 2016.

I have no doubt that Quayle has more candle power than W. and almost all of the GOP Presidential field today. Quayle would be a relative heavyweight up on that 2012 GOP debate stage. Soon someone will say, "Governor Perry, I knew Vice President Quayle, Vice President Quayle was a friend of mine. Governor Perry, you're no Dan Quayle."
