Perry wants votes—from those over 21

MANCHESTER, NH -- Rick Perry wants your vote, just as long as you're legally able to drink, too.

The Texas governor, speaking to students at St. Anselm College on Tuesday in Manchester, NH, asked for the young folks' vote, but seemed to forget that the national voting is 18 -- the age at which it's stood since 1971.

"Those of you that will be 21 by November the 12th, I ask for your support and your vote. Those of you who won't be, just work hard," Perry said.

The age flub wasn't the only one in Perry's pitch to the students; the general election is on Nov. 6, 2012, not Nov. 12.

Ironically, in 1971, the year the U.S. adopted the 26th amendment, establishing the voting age at 18-years-old, Rick Perry turned 21.

I've lived in Texas for a long time and I must admit I'm surprised by Perry's downfall.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not surprised his campaign is in epic fail mode, I'm just surprised the culprit is Perry's outrageous idiocy. I thought it would be the mass burial site he calls his closet, and, no, I'm not just talking about the "Wide Stance" thing.

Rick is from the good ol days when you had to be 21 to
vote but you could drink at 18.

Dennis - The article points that out. Still, for any professional politician not to know the legal age for voting... It's been this way since 1971 and he has been out asking for votes for almost the entirety of his adult life.

Maybe he's trying to prove he is ignorant enough for today's Republican Party, that he, too, is a "leader" and not a "reader."

Well lets see here. Obama didn't know what year it was when he signed the Guest Book at the Queens Birthday. He thought there were 57 States. He miss-pronounced Corpsman several times in one speech. And nothing is on MSNBC. A Republican makes a mistake on Voting Age and he is an Ignorant Bafoon.

NOT MUCH BIAS HERE NOW IS THERE.

News for Dumb Fux?

I had never clicked over to Fox before, but for all the dumb fux above (sorry slodan - you don't qualify), Fox has a story on the White House condemning the raid on the British Embassy in Iran where 6 diplomats were taken hostage, the British flag burned, petrol bombs hurled; the Labor Board Risks Closure Over Union-Rule Dispute; American Airlines filing for bankruptcy protection, etc.

Not near as good as the silly gopsip (that would be g.o.p. gossip for feisty) here at FR, huh?

Oh well.

So I went to TPM where they have the video up of Perry making his statement.

If you can you should see it. When I read this story my first thought was that it was just Perry being stupid. That's nothing new. But now that I see the video I'm wondering if Perry's brain fart was chemically induced. You could blindfold the guy with dental floss.

This is just too painful to watch or listen to......really who encouraged him to run for president. This is a governor of the biggest state in the union, a politician, and he doesn't know basic information about who can vote.

No Rick, you are not ready for prime time, go home and I hope the citizens of Texas, will be less inclined to believe anything coming from you. Frankly sir, I believe you have brain malfunction of some sort, no on can be this stupid. You're just functioning on hot air.

    nisl,

MSNBC is covering all of the stories you referenced, but not on First Read. Why? Because First Read is about politics.

And didn't FR read have a story before this on Biden going to Iraq?

And how is a story on the White House condemning the attack on the British Embassy in Iran not a political story, but Biden going to Iraq is?

Or what about FR's story on Hillary going to Myanmar a few before that?

The repubs quitting the NLRB board to deny the dems a quorum to ram through their political agenda is not a political story.

American Airlines, their union troubles and bankruptcy is not a political story, but GM, their union troubles and bankruptcy is a political story?

Sighhhhh ..... you guys just aren't very good at this stuff.

      #1.20 - Tue Nov 29, 2011 5:01 PM EST

Bob - First Read is the politics blog on MSNBC's website. I don't know for sure, but I'd guess Fox has something similar, most "News" sites do.

Do some stories get posted to First Read that aren't directly related to politics? Sure. But your assertion that MSNBC isn't covering a story because First Read isn't covering a story is incorrect.

The Republican supporters have been reduced to name calling or “I know you are but what am I” comebacks because the there is no defending the accusations made about their candidates.

You want to know a real flub? Seems Obama is going to New York to fundraiser-

            Tomorrow night.

Just so happens to be the worst gridlock alert day of the year- the night they light the Rockefeller Center Chriatmas Tree. So, what with the nypd having to close streets so his entourage can pass through, it's going to make a bad traffic situation an in,intimated nightmare.

To make matters worse, his fundraiser, which will coincide with the lighting, takes place at the Sheraton Hotel- 7th Avenue and 53rd Street. Rockefeller Center is at 50th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.

I'm sure he's going to be really, really popular with the tourists, locals, and those who come in from the Tri-State area to participate in one of the great family events of the year.

Tis the Season - The extra delicious special sauce on the Republican Fail Roast is that they are falling victims to political attacks they engineered in previous elections.

Cain is getting scrutiny over extra marital affairs (amongst other things). The press used to be hands off on such issues (mostly.) That changed when the GOP decided nothing was as important as assassinating Clinton's character. Gingrich will probably get some of this too, which is just oh so perfect.

Romney is a flip flopper. Who was it that turned "flip flopper" into a political killer? The Republicans.

The Republicans are being undone, largely, by their own short sighted strategies.

Okay, I'll spell it out slowly.

Traffic is bad the day of the lighting. Everyone knows this- that's why I referred to it as the worst gridlock alert day of the year.

Obama is going to make a bad traffic situation even worse.

Come to think of it, that's exactly what he did with the economy.

Nojo, Doesn't NYC have a stellar public transportation system? I was there several years ago and I could go everywhere I needed to by subway or walk. Sometimes a bus would work as I got further from Manhattan. Besides aren't there enough people in NYC without people from another state, say New Jersey, going there? One would think that Newark or another city in NJ would have a tree lighting ceremony New Jerseyites could attend.

Ok, I'll spell it out for you, now stop being a dumbass...

              1) Obama's speech was about trade deals;

              2) Hawaai is part of the Asia-Pacific trade region.

...see where this is going dumbass?

Last time I was at Rockefeller Center I didn't notice a massive parking lot or garage which means that if you're going anywhere near the tree lighting you're most likely taking the subway or walking!

The village idiot wouldn't drive near Rockefeller Center tomorrow night...but "No Joe" probably would.

If my memory serves me correctly from the days in my youth heading down to the Jersey Shore to get lucky (Jersey girls were ALWAYS easy...), that would be near exit 109 on the Garden State Parkway, close to the Shore Points...Bruce Springsteen lived not far from there in Rumson...still not close enough for NoJo to venture from her back yard where it's safe to big, bad NYC....

Yes, there is, just not for us. Watch the wingnut trolls that inhabit this site trying to defend Perry, Cain and the rest of the field. Now they have a challenge.

Of course they face that challenge not by defending the candidates, that would be impossible. No, they defend their clown parade by yelling nasty things about Democrats and Republicans. Some of those things are several decades in the rear view mirror, but what can you say, the wingnuts are desperate.

What do you mean when you say "the current crop of Republicans."?? What idea does that convey? In other words, you don't know any more about how to express an idea than the rest of the writers of comments. What idea did you intend to express by that phrase. I have been a Republican since l968 -- that is 43 years. Am I in the "current crop?" Do you mean the"crop" (a big crop, too) of l8, 19 and 20 year olds who are registering as Republicans? Now that I have completely wiped out any chance you might have had to convey an idea, I want to add that you sound like every D-student O ever met in High school. Why are you writing comments?

Typical GOP comeback, have you noticed that when people make negative comments about Obama they are countered with facts about Obama……not with “Perry did this, Romney did that or Newt did that? The Republican supporters have been reduced to name calling or “I know you are but what am I” comebacks because the there is no defending the accusations made about their candidates.

Focus - For today's GOP it is all about distraction. In the last thread, the one about Cain slipping, the wingnut trolls told us how Cain was being attacked by the media and not getting the special preferential treatment Bill Clinton received when he was in office. How utterly clueless and pig ignorant does one have to be to say Clinton got a free pass during the media? The same wingnut halfwit brought up Ted Kennedy's Chappaquiddick incident and Barney Frank's prostitute issue. Both of those things is decades old, Barney Frank is retiring and Kennedy is dead. How freaking desperate do you have to be to bring up that crap?

I can't help wondering what those indivuals who continue to give monetary support to Gov Perry (and some of the other candidates) are thinking? Does the idea that they might be giving money to a candidate who has very, very little chance of gaining the nomination not occur to them? Do they get a kick out of backing a non-finisher? Do they have so much money that it doesn't matter whom they support? Or are they still hoping that their candidate will somehow manage to turn around all the missteps and emerge as a strong, viable candidate?

There seems to be so much dissatisfaction with the current crop of candidates, and with President Obama, one wonders if the Americans Elect movement will gain any steam. Is a candidate who is independent of either political party the answer?

50 states plus DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands, the Texas caucus because someone thought it was a good idea to have both a primary and a caucus in Texas and split the delegates so it counts as two separate races, American Somoa, and finally voters abroad like soliders and diplomats that get all lumped together and treated as one separate race. 57. They count 57 races, they allocate 57 sets of delegates. During the primaries they focus everything on the 57 races that send delegates to the convention.

But Jody, that 49 states would again become 50.....gotta add in the 'State of Confusion" that Perry lives in.

Here is the video for you.

He CLEARLY SAYS 57 SATES NOT 57 RACES. And to use your math. He says 57 States visited,ONE TO GO and NOT ALLOWED TO GO TO ALASKA AND HAWAII,that makes 60 STATES!!!

It's a good thing Perry didn't tell a wheelchair bound person to "stand up !" (i.e. Joe Biden, the gaffe machine)

Haha another epic fail. This might be a minor thing as a standalone event, but when you add it to the big picture, Perry is just not ready for prime time.

"Scary Perry" is proving. Again! That he is an ignorant GOP slow mentally moving Elephant. He is unable to read with any sense of comprehension, and he has no intellectual abilities. Listening to "Scary Perry" trying to sound smart??? Is truely showing America how just mentally ill he is. This is another GOP Clown, who loves to perform his political puking under the GOP Circus Big Top. Is America getting tired of seeing and hearing these GOP Clowns yet??? I hope so!

I am actually beginning to feel sorry for Perry. Aren't these the types of mistakes that stem from alcoholism or senility? How many people with a staff as large as his can regularly make such boners? If he is sober and in command of his wits, then he must be the most nervous campaigner in the history of the game. I think he just loses track of what he is saying between the time he opens his mouth and closes it. Two or three sentences into an answer and he is just lost in space trying to remember what he was going to say. Texans must wince every time he makes the news.

Whoa... Jack and Jills, wait a minute here. Forrest Gump said it best "Stupid is as Stupid does"... These GOP characters here running for the office of the President of the United states of America are so comical and funny that SNL, Colbert and all of the late night shows TV hosts will have comedic material for years to come. Yet what is so scarry is that the right-wingers are still trying to convince the rest of the American people. That out of all of these minstrel men and woman. One of them should be elected rightfully (yes rightfully) to this office. Because if my memory serves me well G.W.Bush became the President under very auspicious circumstances (see Florida). And that is a real posibillity here, knowing the the GOP will do anything to get the WhiteHouse back...

So come next election Americans please vote. And vote for what's best for all of us. Not just a certain party or group...
