Cain tells staff he's reassessing campaign

Will the newest recent allegations Herman Cain seal his fate?

Herman Cain told senior campaign staff members Tuesday that he's "reassessing" his campaign in the wake of a fresh allegation that he engaged in a 13-year-long extramarital affair.

Steve Grubbs, the candidate's Iowa campaign chairman, confirms to NBC News that Cain said he's taking a step back, much as he did after his finish in the Ames Straw Poll in August, to evaluate the direction of his campaign. The call included Cain's 50 state directors, and the reassessment will occur over the next two days.

This reassessment coincides with a new allegation from Ginger White, an Atlanta woman who says that she and Cain engaged in an affair for well over a decade, one that ended only recently. Cain has denied the affair.

Cain reiterated his claim, made yesterday in reaction to the new allegation, that White was simply a friend who he had sought to help financially, and that nothing inappropriate had happened between the two of them.

The former Godfather's Pizza CEO, who has faced a string of different allegations of sexual harassment, also said that he had no immediate plans to cancel his campaign events; he still intends to deliver a major foreign policy speech tonight in Michigan.

But Cain acknowledged the emotional toll that the claims against him had taken on his family. He said yesterday on CNN that he would stay in the campaign as long as his wife continued to believe he should stay in the race.

In the same interview, though, Cain opened the door to a possible exit from the race.

"It's just the way it is, but I'm not going to allow this sort of thing to cause me to drop out simply because it's tough on me. I don't want it to be tough on my family. And there comes a point that if it's tough on my family, I have to consider that at that particular point in time," he said.

Asked whether he would drop out if the race became too tough, Cain said: "I'll make that decision depending upon the circumstances and how it is impacting my wife and my family. That's my number one concern by all of these accusations."

SLIDESHOW: Herman Cain

***UPDATE*** Cain spokesman J.D. Gordon tells NBC News: "It's a reassessment of where we stand and the road ahead, similar to other times in the campaign's history. We're looking forward to getting back on message tonight with the Foreign Policy and National Security speech at Hillsdale College in Michigan."

The Pizza Pimp's dalliances seemingly have caught up with him and he's on his final approach into the GOP embarrassment file..along with Palin, Bachman, O'Donnell, etal.....I have to feel sorry for the misguided minds that sent this con-man their money....He was never a candidate, candidate, he was merely on a tax payer expensed book tour and trolling for a Fox TV Show (which I guess is still possible given how low the bar is there)....Please, could "anyone" actually envision this faux political caricature in the oval office??? This would be laughable, if it weren't such a national disgrace.....

You'd think these guys who are supposedly so powerful could attract better looking women. If I were going to have my chances at being President ruined while risking divorce and all the other consequences that go along with it, it would have to be with a Victoria's Secret underwear model. Not Monica Lewinski. And certainly not her mom.

Lord,

please bless Mr. Cain in this trying time. I know in my heart that he will bring back sanity and morality to the GOP.
I know he is probably guilty. But he is not a democrat. And therefore morale in the eyes of God.
And the great thing about christianity is that we can sin our whole life then repent and we still get into heaven.

Amen

Cain should be reassessing his presidential run based on his incompetence. I'll miss his antics, but I'm sure the rest of the GOP field will be able to pick up the slack.

He should have used the Schwarzeneggar approach and just come out and said he had done things he wasn't proud of.

What do Newt's "stress of patriotism" and Herm's anonymous accusations (until they weren't) have in common?

    Adultery.

That foreign policy speech tonight is a critical piece in his campaign puzzle! We now know that he knows how to handle domestic AFFAIRS!!!!

Of course the party of "family values" (they love to dictate your family's values to you) is now swooning over Newt - the icon of family values who was busy "valuing" one of his staffers the whole time his wife was dying and while he was impeaching President Clinton! (I may have his affairs mixed up but he valued his family enough to tell his dying wife about his affair and their divorce while she was in the hospital fighting for her life! What a great guy!

I hoped this women put away lots of his cash for her future...13 years, she should have a nice bank account...

There is tragedy here. The GOP lost the only African-American figurehead (and member) they spend years finding.

    Except Alan West.

A minority conservative is anathema to liberal thinking. They pull out all of the stops when they are confronted by one. It becomes a no-holds-barred crusade for them. This behavior says more about the hypocritical, corrupt quality of liberal thinking than it does about Cain.

You forget that the job of the press is to report. Reporters are a curious bunch...one whiff of scandal, a few rumors, some unanswered questions...and they get to work. Like my Gramp used to say...."They go at it like a dog with something under the porch." And...that's their job. Get the story behind the story...report the facts. You don't have to be liberal or conservative to report the news...you just need that inexorable desire to dig and dig and dig.

If you expect to run for the highest office in the land...you'd better expect (and be prepared for) the most detailed scrutiny.

Go home, you pathetic loser. Hey Republicans, want to lecture everybody about family and morality? Find somebody who cares about those things and nominate them. Then even though what you say is stupid, it sounds credible. As for this idiot, why would you run with all that history? Apparently he is just that dumb, proving how much aptitude goes into wealth.

For Cain that wanted to electrocute Mexicans at the border fence realize the people that come to the United States illegal come to work to provide for the well being of their family, a primary responsibility of a husband. Yet, you a "legal" citizen of this U.S. failed your own family by being immoral! As if not enough you drag thousands of people along with your lies!
