Gingrich: No comment on Cain affair story

Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain has denied having a 13-year affair with Ginger White, an Atlanta businesswoman who claims an intermittent relationship with Cain that ended a few months ago. NBC's Lisa Myers reports.

Although he’s previously had words of support of Herman Cain in the midst of his sexual harassment allegations, Newt Gingrich refused to comment tonight on a woman’s claim tonight that she had an affair with the former Godfather’s CEO.

When asked by NBC News if he had a comment on “Herman Cain” (before the reporter could finish the question), Gingrich responded, “No. Nope, nope, nope. No comments.”

Asked if he knew what the reporter was trying to ask, Gingrich said, “I thought it was possible.”

Gingrich then waved goodbye to the reporter’s camera.

The former House speaker spoke positively of Cain, and his ability to address the allegations of sexual harassment against him, on November 11th during an appearance on CBS’s Early Show.

NBC's David Gregory and Chuck Todd discuss the impact the extra-marital affair claims against GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain will have on Cain's campaign and the overall Republican field.

“Up to now he seems to have satisfied most people that the allegations aren't proven, and that having people who hold press conferences isn't the same as a conviction. So I think people are giving him the benefit of the doubt,” Gingrich had said.

The media bear seems to be muddling around aimlessly at the moment. A story on one candidate not commenting on another? Really?

I was hoping to read instead how John Huntsman had no opinion about Gary Johnson's silence regarding Michelle Bachmann's statements on Gingrich's immigration views.

Cain has problems beyond fooling around on his wife that make him a BAD selection for a candidate. 9 9 9?? Where is Libya? The Lame Stream Media had many victims to choose through for their demonizing crusade on this subject; LET ME COUNT THE WAYS.... for example on the subject of infidelity or cheating on their significant other, there's quite a list of Democrats and hardcore Liberals the media could have talked to, take for example the following list of lofty arrogant lifer politicians, John Edwards, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Jesse Jackson, John Kerry, Anthony Weiner, Al Sharpton, Gary Hart, Gary Condit, Rod Blagovevich, David Giles, Ted Kennedy (now dead, thank God), Steven Effman, Barney Frank (Remember that Male Prostitution Ring Thing), Gary Becker, Sam Adams, Gordon Hintz, Tim Mahoney.... my, my, my but there's a lot of them, and a whole lot more,.... but since none of them are running for president and none of them conservative or GOP POTUS contenders, the media gives them a Free Pass...

FYI, the Lame Stream Media isn't a Bear, not at all..... they'er a PIG. Especially when it comes around Election Time.

Liberals don't need evidence, they don't even read legislation before voting on it, so long as it's one of their own, nothing else matters. Self promotion, before a country, that's the liberal moto.

Liberal hypocrites are up early this morning! I think Cain is done, for a bunch of reasons. He is not ready to be President and all the crazy stories tell me that he is not fully forthcoming. I love the idea of a black conservative daring to buck the liberal system, but I don't think Herman is our guy.

Newt has admitted his affairs. Newt resigned from office. Newt apologized and asked for forgiveness.

Contrast that with Bubba Clinton who harassed women and young (22 years old) interns as a governor and President. He lied to his family, lied to the American people. He lied under oath and was disbarred. If he would have been honest in January of 1998, he could have saved the nation $40 million and perhaps accomplished something in his second term.

Since you forgot/ignored Clinton's porking around, you have basically taken adultery off the table. OOps too bad for you.

I guess 2012 will have to be an election based on Obama's abysmal economic record and real ideas for growth.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

Look at the charts, not bad for someone dealing with Republicans that have blocked, stalled, and obstructed everything he has tried.

As for Clinton, he has the most experience with balancing budgets. People should be listening to him.

I love you teabaggers getting all bent out of shape about Clinton or the myriad other democrats/liberals getting a pass on past indiscretions; so let me explain the difference.

1. There is no difference in a democrat/liberal vs. republican/teabagger who commits adultery.

2. What does make it different is that the republicans choose to beat everyone over the head about how they have morals and no one else does. Republicans preach about the sanctity of marriage while being a dog at the same time.

Get off of your high horse and except the fact that when it comes to adultery, teabaggers are really no different from anyone else, you just like to stand in judgement of others to make yourself feel special.

Eric, Your points sound like a script written by the DNC. Learn to think for yourself. As for Bill Clinton, he is a brilliant man but he committed adultry and lied to the entire nation about it. Yet somehow you want to give him a pass because he's a liberal. It's very hypocritical.

Eric, Obama had the House and the Senate for 2 years. He has the White House and the Senate today. The GOP does not have enough House seats to override an Obama veto. Competent presidents have achieved much with the same or less votes than Obama has today. Reagan turned around a nation with fewer votes. Clinton's only accomplishments came after our old buddy Newt took over the House after 54 years of democrat rule.

To say he cannot get anything done because of Republicans only solidifies the fact that Obama is weak and ineffective. Thanks for helping me make my point.

#1.20 - Tue Nov 29, 2011 5:59 PM EST

Duphas-- Of course there are sex scandals on both sides of the aisle, but a few BIG differences are: 1) Most Dems resign after they are busted; 2) Republicans run on "family values" so should practice what they preach; and 3) Conservatives forgive their hypocritical leaders but burn Dems at the stake. Stop with the "two wrongs make a right" fallascious argumentation.

Republicans like Newt Gingrich are the biggest turds ever squeezed out of Washington. Newt is an immoral, unethical, pathological liar who is so greedy as to have ZERO integrity. He is the Poster Boy for everything that is wrong with Washington. Cain is the same but just smaller potatoes in even more denial.

Gary 420- The Teapublican House currently has the largest majority in modern history, and has also broken all records with non-stop abuse of the filibuster that requires a Super Majority of 60 to pass anything instead of the usual simple majority of 51 votes. So if you want to get your panties in a wad about presidential vetoes you should be outraged that Dubya never vetoed a single spending bill.

Both of you need get out of the right-wing Echo Chamber and Cone of Silence. Give us a friggin' break!

True Patriot, you need to brush up on your 8th grade civics. Must have been taught by a union teacher.

House Republicans do not have a veto proof majority. We will no doubt pick up more seats in 2012.

The Super Majority of 60 votes needed to prevent a filibuster is in the Senate, which is controlled by Dems.

The House Republicans have nothing to do with filibusters in the Senate. The democrat controlled Senate has not passed a budget in 3 years.

Please note that dems used the same procedures under Bush that you are crying about today. More liberal hypocrisy. When dems use a parliamentary tactic, it is fine; when Republicans do the same it is treason.

You are right, I was outraged that Bush never vetoed a spending bill. He should have vetoed the farm bill, the highway bill, never passed Medicare Part D, etc. He spent too much. Obama took the Bush spending and doubled it.

We have a spending problem, caused by both parties. That's why we don't want another George Bush. We want a true fiscal conservative in the White House.

Dont bother with the truth, Egiman- they are uninterested.

Know what's funny? FDR was wheelchair bound due to polio- and the public never knew, because it was not considered a subject worthy of print, radio, or newsreel.

Since it did not affect his ability to do his job, the reporters of the era decided, en masse, that it would simply prejudice the electorate against him- so they never reported it- or photographed him in his wheelchair.

He also had a long term affair with a woman not his wife, an affair with which the reporters of the era were quite familiar- and that was not reported for the same reasons.

    Ditto Eisenhower.

JFK also had a serious health issue at a time when such was life threatening- Addison's disease. The adrenal glands run amok- and cause the bones to weaken, along with the heart. Kennedy was hospitalized for this during his Senate tenure- any Washington reporter unaware of this would have had to have been living in a cave - yet, that was not reported, as the press of that era decided that it was not germane to his ability to function as president.

His private escapades are legion- yet, they were not reported, either.

Of course, at that time, all journalists understood the ethics of their profession. Now? Well, on this board, the "journalists" deny the existence of a Canon of Ethics. I've been directing them to the site where they can be read for a while now- ever since the Edwards mess, in fact- but they seem uninterested in learning about it.

They prefer the role of Nosy Parker, it seems. If they can juice it up to make it even more salacious, they will not miss the opportunity.

Obama promised the dirtiest, most negative campaign we'd ever seen. This is just. Taste of what is to come.

And the media is playing along with him.

Historically incorrect as always no jo. FDR made every effort to disguise how impaired he was.

As to the rest of it: the Republican Party has no one to blame but themselves for their candidates being challenged on their family issues. Once they decided to be the "morality police" and lecture the rest of us on living "Godly and moral lives" their own actions became fodder for the press. I am so tired of the "holier than thou" Republicans sniffing at the rest of humanity, putting out the ills, and then we find out that their peccadillos are far more serious. My favorite part is always when it becomes the women's fault, because they are lying (Cain) or some form of "God told me it was all right and he forgives me, because I am, well, I am a heck of a nice guy and SHOULD be President" (Newtoid).

Any of you Republicans who support either of these candidates are hypocrites of the first order.

As to a Canon of Ethics from a private organization...I'm sure that FR staff will become more concerned about it when you adhere to it yourself.

She was in the hospital recovering from her third surgery, which removed a benign tumor from her uterus. Newt brought their daughters to the hospital that day to visit with their mother. While visiting, one daughter asked her mother if it was OK for Daddy to come up to the room. If you want to write about GOP candidates like Newt Gingrich, tell us about how he recently flip flopped at the recent CNN debate where he stated that he would support a further bolstered Patriot Act.

Did you know that in 2003 he wrote to the SF Chronicle that the Patriot Act must be reined in before it got out of control? Now that would be a worthwhile story to write about.

Did the reporter actually believe that Newt would talk about marriage infidelity? Newt may be an expert on the subject, but he has no knowledge of Mr. Cain's exploits...

      Confused 157043

The reporter wanted Newt's input because we all know or think he's done the same thing many times before. I've heard Newt gave one of his ex-wives divorce papers as she was in the hospital with cancer. I can only hope that isn't true for what kind of President would that make?

You are reading the National inquirer of the internet, Also known to most as MSLSD. I heard Obama was an alien! I heard Clinton had an affair while in office and lied under oath.

The point is LISTEN TO THE MAN TALK...in fact LISTEN TO THEM ALL TALK...and make up your mind when you pull the trigger on election day

And dont forget...MSLSD is the worst source for credible news our nation has ever seen! It has taken the profesion to laughable levels.

Of course Newt can't comment because he's an adulterer twice over. So much for Family Values!

      "He who is without sin..."

If god is real I'm sure he is kicking himself for putting this statement out there as every sinner on the planet likes to draw it like a gun whenever they find themselves busted.

Mark isn't running for office on a family values platform. If I had heard that a plumber had wrecked the sinks in more than one home I probably wouldn't hire him. As a bible thumper you may want to consider the fool who you are voting for to keep biblical "values" emblazoned across everyone's foreheads.

We dont want him to fix our sinks. We want him to fix our economy. He is the smartest and most experienced candidate. He came within 1 vote of a balenced budget amendment and balenced the budget not Clinton

This is a subject that Gingrich does not want to become a topic, because he's more vulnerable than any of the GOP contenders on this topic. My only question is, how long it will take after Cain drops out for his wife to kick his lying butt to the curb. And Gingrich knows that his marriage is next once that door swings open. And this is the best the GOP has to offer? Really makes one wonder about the entire Republican party.

I have sympathy for Mrs. Cain. This has to be a horrible time for her, and she seems like someone who prefers privacy. This has got to be terrible for her and her family, and I'm sorry for it. No matter how I feel about Cain, and his ability to be President, it is always the family that gets hurt.

Cain should have stayed in the race and made the point that if Newt can stay in with his issues, why should he quit?

Yes drag Clinton into it - divert the problem. I'm and independent, voting democratic this time. Didn't approve of Clinton's dalliances and I don't approve of Cain or Newt. Here's one BIG difference - we didn't know BEFORE Clinton stepped into the Oval office that he was an adulterer - but we do know BEFORE these clowns get a chance. AND there is more to BOTH Cain and Newt that extra marital affairs................................their integrity SUCKS. AND Newt was Clinton's NUMBER ONE attacker at the time all the while he was doing the same thing..................now that's a HYPOCRITE.
