If you commit a murder and evade arrst for 25 years and finally are arrested-you're still guilty or murder. I'm not comparing murder to being an illegal alien, fyi-just used a crime without a statue of limitations for example. Illegal is illegal. Newt is trying hard to get media attention and wants to look as the middle of the road republican candidate for the undecided voters. Did he ever care for the latino vote ? Of course, not. Just like all republicans, they bash the illegal workers who, for the great benefit of US employers, are doing the jobs no other americans want to do. You could vote YES, if you believed the "pathway" was amnesty for living here so long,....

or you could also vote YES, if you believed the "pathway" was sending them back across the border to get in line for "legal" citizenship.

So in this case NO, just means they'll always be "illegal" and you really don't care.

Immigration is supposed to benefit the USA. Taking people that poor would make us more of a refugee camp-- like the muslims in europe and that's a god aweful mess. If they're that poor/unskilled, our only benefit from them is cheap labor (lets be honest about it) therefore you need to start in a seasonal guest worker's program. Lots of countries have them.

A distinction to "amnesty" that Newt raised last night is very important to me, No Citizenship. If your first action when entering the country is to break the law and you continue to break the law via tax evasion, document fraud, etc. you forfeit any right of citizenship, forever.

After we seal the borders, after we impose E-verify and other sensible means to control illegal immigration going forward, I would not oppose some compassion to long standing, employed and otherwise law abiding aliens to some sensible and limited extent.

Just pass E-Verify, and let them self-deport. Then, they can use the LEGAL process to enter the US. Any amnesty will just cause more of them to cross illegally, and wait for the next one. Jobs is the draw. Take that away by having a strong verification process, and real penalties on employers who skirt the law, and the problem will eventually solve itself.

As I perused the comments on the left and right of this issue, it occurred to me that the right are that little kid who never wanted to share his toys with others and hoarded all his stuff, fearing that someone would take his childhood dream away. The left are the kids who shared their stuff, realizing that by sharing, the giver and the recipient and the giver would both be enriched. Sad, isn't it. Some kids just never grow up.
