Romney's first TV ad hits Obama (and is out of context)

As it typically does when President Obama goes on the road, the Romney campaign is bracketing the president's visit to New Hampshire today. But this time, it's doing it with its first TV advertisement of the race -- and it’s negative.

The ad begins -- featuring grainy video and ominous music -- with Obama campaigning in New Hampshire back in October 2008. "If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose," Obama is captured saying in the spot.

But, as the New York Times points out, “[T]he line, which is perhaps the spot’s most devastating moment, is also the one that seems to be the most taken out of context. In fact, at the time, Mr. Obama was referring to something that an aide to his then opponent, Senator John McCain of Arizona, had said in reference to the McCain campaign — not Mr. Obama, then or now.”

In fact, the Romney campaign pretty much admits this with its documentation of the ad's assertions.

OBAMA: “If we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose.”

Obama: “Senator McCain’s campaign actually said, and I quote, if we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose.” (Senator Barack Obama, Remarks, Londonderry, NH, 10/16/08)

The Obama campaign pounced on Romney's advertisement, calling it "deceitful" and "dishonest." And the Democratic National Committee has accused Romney of being a "serial deceiver."

"Mitt Romney is a serial deceiver -- and his deceptions know no bounds," the DNC said in a release. "Romney will deceive about his own record, the record of his opponents and his positions on the issues. And when Mitt Romney is caught deceiving – he doubles down and deceives even more."

The Romney campaign defended its use, saying the “tables have turned” on the president. “President Obama and his campaign are doing exactly what candidate Obama criticized,” Romney Communications Director Gail Gitcho said. “President Obama and his team don’t want to talk about the economy and have tried to distract voters from President Obama’s abysmal economic record.”

After hitting Obama, the Romney ad pivots -- with soaring string music -- to what he wants to do. He hits on Tea Party talking points: “getting rid of programs, turning programs back to states”; “get rid of ‘ObamaCare’; “moral responsibility not to spend more than we take in”; “high time to bring those principles of fiscal responsibility to Washington, D.C.” And, with a shot of a manufacturing worker, he says, he’ll “make America a job-creating machine like it has been in the past.”

All of these responses are quite telling. A lot of bashing Romney for taking a quote out of context, which I believe is completely wrong. But I would put $ down that there are a lot of John "King of Taking People out of Context" Stewart watchers/worshipers here. Such a double standard. Democrat Politicians are just as guilty of doing this as Romney or any Republican. If you really believed what you were saying, you'd be bashing both sides....

The difference is John "King of Taking People out of Context" Stewart is not a candidate for president. People expect much more from you when you are a presidential candidate than what they expect from a political satire show host

I agree, that John Stewart is not held to the same standard as a presidential candidate... I do hear from some that take his word as doctrine and that he "tells it like it is".... a bit scary how many, IMO, take his political satire show as truth. I prefer Colbert though, more funny IMO.

Here are just a few examples of the "other side" taking others out of context:

sayanythingblog.com/entry/democrats-are-taking-reagan-out-of-context-in-debt-ceiling-debate/

politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2008/jan/14/bill-clinton/bill-takes-obama-out-of-context/

usnews.com/opinion/blogs/peter-roff/2011/05/20/democrats-distort-newt-gingrichs-medicare-comments-again

If we were to look closely at any politician, it would be easy to find flip flops and dishonesty. Just google "Obama caught lying" and see what comes up... unfortunately the MSM picks and chooses the stories they want to share based on their own agendas/bias... on both sides.

Funny thing scott, It was the Daily Show that got the award in journalism because well, apparently they do "tell it like it is". Don't be so jealous of John Stewart.

    #31.5 - Wed Nov 23, 2011 2:23 PM EST

    Sally,

How silly and ridiculous that the Daily Show was given an award for 'journalism' when even Jon Stewart himself claims that the show is simply for comedic value...

Plus, being given an award by your very own supporters does truly distinguish anyone. It's like Obama being given a Nobel Peace Prize before he had even completed a single year in office. A peace prize for what??? LOL!!!

Mitt Romney wouldn't know the truth if it hit him right in his face. If he's not flip flopping on every issue there is to speak of, he just outright lies. Remember the line in one of the debates to Perry (when he brought up the illegal hiring deal)...."I've never hired an illegal - I'm running for office, for God's sake!" That's his whole existence in a nutshell. Just make it look good, no matter if he has to lie about it or not. I say this without hesitation....President Obama will be re-elected next year.

I would say that is true, if baroke omamba talks about the economy he is going to lose, it's really pretty simple. The guy was never vetted for the first campaign due to the fact the liberal media was in love with any beating heart that spoke like a robin hood socialist. The guy has zero financial experience and still does not get it! Business cannot succeed with him in the white house, without businesses flourishing you will continue losing jobs, jobs, jobs!!!! Sound like anyone you know?

The only jobs a union is capable of creating are pension fund managers for the union bosses. Let's face it, the unions want a guy that promotes unions that are anti-business and they both wonder; "why are all the jobs leaving this nation"??

In the big picture this doesn't matter. Both sides do it. So what if one out of five comments was taken out of context, big deal, nothing new. The rest of Obama's quotes in the ad were true and for political standards, that isn't bad. Looks like Romney is simply taking the gloves off and playing by the Democrat rules now. If the GOP were to go by the "take the high road" approach, they will lose big time and the Democrats would still blast ads with half-truths, platitudes and distortions. As we learned from the 2008 presidential elections...the Good Guy that took the high road finished last.

You just never know who Americans will vote for, though. When Bush was elected, I was shocked. Shocked, I tell you. It was already published what the Project for a New American Century was after, and they unabashedly posted on their website that their sick world domination agenda would best be served if America was attacked on a scale similar to Pearl Harbor. This is not a conspiracy theory, it's what was on the website at the time. The website is still there, but they took down the part about a Pearl Harbor-like attack after 9-11. Check out the web site, since it's now again extant since Romney said he favored the New American Century in the CBS foreign affairs debate. HE FAVORS IT! The demented agenda envisions a world dominated by a ubiquitous American Military presence. Here a troop, there a troop, everywhere a troop, troop. Here a war, there a war.....well, you get the idea. Read the website and see what Romney favors. Raising, not lowering military spending, not as a response to anything, but as an ideology. Gees, if America just posts armies all over the planet, everything will be as it should. I wish this were a post that just reflected my opinion, but this is entirely factual and you can check it out yourselves, my fellow Americans. Go to the web site and see what Willard Mitt Romney will do with your tax dollars if he is ever elected.

Hey, I didn't say it, Romney did.

Funny how as time goes by, each one of these losers sound as if they are trying to be Ron Paul. However, none of these losers can be Ron Paul.

Ron Paul has dedicated his life to helping others, being a man of his word, leading by example, and not being afraid to stand up for what is right. He has never placed himself in a questionable situation, cheated or lied to gain power or fame. However, it seems that those qualities are not important to those who do not share the same characteristics.

If you are tired of hearing the good speech with no action, vote for Ron Paul and know he will make the "Changes" you wanted 3 years ago.

I have seen the "Real Polls"... and as it stands now, the only state Ron Paul may not win is North Carolina. ( this includes the Obama election )

It's Time To Stand Behind A Winner.

Ron Paul could be the greatest president in our history.

Let's face it, America needs a break from corrupt politicians.

Hmmmm, well, Democrats CONTROLLED THE PRESIDENCY, SENATE, AND THE HOUSE for the last two years 2008-2010 (until getting destroyed in the 2010 midterms). So, Obama and the Dems did NOT need any republican support on ANYTHING, and yet, they still NEVER passed a single budget. NOT ONCE!! So, it would seem that Congress, under the Dems, had every opportunity to implement their own agenda, which they did, and now, it seems that our country is much worse off than we were when Obama took office. Hmmm... it would seem that your argument fails.... Good try though, just keep blaming repubs who still ONLY control one aspect of Congress, while the Dems control both the Senate and the presidency. FAIL.

You seem reasonably educated. Perhaps you could give us all a brief definition of the "fillibuster" and how it has been used since 2008 until the present day.

SUPERMAJORITY means a filibuster DOES NOT WORK. This is how the DEMS were able to pass Obamacare WITH NO Republican support, it was filibuster-proof. See, does it make sense now?

What in hell type of leadership did we have by going into two wars, selling out the middle-class American to the highest bider on wall street, cutting education funding to our children of the future, etc, etc. In my state people would beg the difference with you because President Obama programs have kept many people working over the last 3 years and these projects(INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS,BRIDGES) are long term jobs. Go back to fox new where people do not check the facts before they made an ass of themselves. In closing I will indicated that this is a fair & balance comment.

If you want to do your part to help end the status quo in Washington D.C. and end the madness and if you want to help bring sanity back to the economy and the financial markets, and if you are sick and tired of the irresponsible and secretive manipulations of the markets and monetary system by the Fed that is wrecking the economy ... if you are sick and tired of the rampant crony capitalism in this country, if you want to put an end to all the needless wars and bring the troops home NOW, then please do your part by voting for Ron Paul in your Republican primary or caucus in your state. Remember that in many states you have to be registered as a Republican to vote in the Republican primaries, so check with your state's Republican party about that and check the date to vote in your state's primary/caucus. If you are NOT a Republican, and if your state requires you to be registered as a Republican, you can still vote for Ron Paul by temporarily registering Republican long enough to cast your vote for Ron Paul and can then switch back.

There are currently many democrats and independents also joining the effort to end the status quo by voting for Ron Paul in the upcoming Republican primaries.

Even though he is currently running in the Republican primary, Ron Paul represents the people, his campaign is funded by the people, and he doesn't accept a dime from corporations or special interest donors. Funny thing is many in the GOP still do not like him because he is against the establishment status quo.

Ron Paul would end the wars and bring the troops home immediately. Ron Paul has raised more money from military families than all GOP candidates combined, while Romney relies on money from multinational corporate lobbyists, many of them pro war.

                                      Let the People decide!

Yeah...funny how that Godly standard is only applied to GOP and not Democrats. It seems Democrats don't have to worry about being Godly and outright lying and spinning the truth is perfectly acceptable. LOL.

When did the MSNBC board become so anti-Romney? The truth is that President Obama has destroyed this country, hasn't a clue about our economy, and is not interested in America because he is not an American! Romney will do what Obama can't if Romney is given the chance. Sorry if my comments rain on your entitlement parade.

Not that I'd ever vote for it, but the ideal presidential ticket would be Romney/Obama.

The DNC and White House are calling Romney a SERIAL DECEITER.

To the millions of us who know the truth is as Romney says in his ad ... all we can say to the White House and the DNC ... is

IT TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE!!!!

People who live in glass houses - especailly White Houses - shouldn't throw stones!

The simple fact is that Romney's ad will work on conservatives because they will believe anything. Romney is all things to all people. He will say whatever he thinks his listeners want to hear and he has done this over and over again.

He hasn't a shred of integrity or honesty, in short, a typical republican.

Look, you can't expect to have jobs AND support the New American Century, which Romney says he supports. All the new jobs will be with military contractors and will be connected with military occupation of countries overseas. You think we can afford to have manufacturing and service industries at home when Romney will be sending all the money overseas? Of course not, don't be ridiculous.

15 of 20 advisors to Romney are vestiges of the Bush administration. Did you like Rumsfield and Wolfowicz? One of them will be back in as Defense Secretary. Like the Cheneys? How about Liz Cheney for Sec'y of State? Did you like Alberto "I can't remember" Gonzoles? It would be nice to have him back in as Attorney General, wouldn't it? I don't think Condi Rice will come back though, since Cheney reduced her to tears.

If you like to be lied to, vote Romney. If you like false intelligence as a pretext to war, vote Romney. If you thought W was the best president ever, Romney is your man. If you want runaway military spending, you guessed it, Romney again. If you want a repeat of the Bush years, vote Romney. If you envision a world-wide American military dictatorship while here at home there is no clean water, no jobs, and no hope, well, you've got the perfect candidate.
