Cain says his race will help the GOP. But is he right?

Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain is claiming his race will help him win over African American voters.

In a seven-page mailer sent to Iowans over the weekend, Cain writes, "as a descendent of slaves I can lead the Republican Party to victory by garnering a large share of the black vote, something that has not been done since Dwight Eisenhower garnered 41 percent of the black vote in 1956."

But while Cain might believe he'll garner a larger share of the black vote in a head-to-head match-up against President Obama, this month's NBC/WSJ poll — which had an oversample of 400 African-American respondents — tells a different story.

In a hypothetical general election matchup, according to the poll, Obama gets support from 93 percent of African Americans, while Cain gets just 6 percent.

Against Romney, Obama performs similarly among black voters. Ninety-two percent of African Americans would support Obama, versus just six percent for Romney. According to the 2008 exit polls, Obama got 95 percent of the African American vote.

Even with sliding poll numbers, Cain has attracted large crowds at recent events — but supporters attending Cain rallies are overwhelmingly white.

The mailer is the latest sign of Cain's increased fundraising haul at work. The campaign raised more than $1 million for its “Iowa Fund,” and earlier this month Cain announced he had brought in more than $9 million since Oct. 1.

I think Cain's a good businessman, and we need one of those rather than another politician. Unfortunately, though, Obama won most of the black vote by promising them more benefits. Obviously, he didn't come through so NOW he's got to kiss the a**es of the Hispanic voters which is why he's so hot for defying the laws of this country and for the incredibly stupid "DREAM (not mine!) Act." If he can get them -- by inviting more illegal aliens into our country -- and of course, appeal to the very idealistic and disingenuous youth vote, he may have a chance. And there will ALWAYS be blacks who vote for him JUST BECAUSE he's black and Dems who vote for him because he claims to be a Dem. In reality, he's a left-wing, egomaniacal, arrogant and incompetent community organizer who was never qualified for the job in the first place. And now he's blaming only the Republicans on the super-committee because they wouldn't compromise? I didn't notice any Democrats compromising either!

1. Obama won the DEMOCRAT vote by appealing to americans desire for things like health care reform which congress did pass.

2. The Obama administration has deported more foreign nationals than W. Additionally, W. was the one chastised for supporting a "path to citizenship."

3. The "idealistic and disingenuous" youth understand this topic better than the rest of us. They are furthest from the racial tensions that still burden america... however, I understand why you distrust the youth as they also accept same-sex orientation as an acceptable social practice which should be protected by the constitution.

4. There will ALWAYS be whites who vote for whites if there is a black candidate on the ballot.

5. Teapublicans do not vote for democrats anymore than democrats vote for egomaniacal, arrogant, unintelligent, incompetent faux-constitutionalists.

6. Republicans control congress. If they WANTED to do ANYTHING they could do it now.

Becky, you are the definitive argument for the Blue and Red States succeeding.

I am really so sick of suffering for all the ignorant Beckys of this country. Let's just separate along the Red and Blue lines and see which side prospers. I already know the answer to the question but I'm sure you don't Becky. You need to figure out just where the revenues in this country come from.

Go and form your own country and when you are starving to death from supporting all your phony wars and Herman Cain or some other republican has violated you in one form or another, maybe then we can talk.

I will be in my Blue State country with gobs and gobs of Tech money. I will have Universal Healthcare FULLY FUNDED by the revenues from legalized marijuana. There will be a solar array on every home. People will smile and laugh again because we will not have the RED STATE WELFARE QUEENS sucking on our teats.

Let me dispel some of the myths you all believe about Republicans, although I can only speak for myself. First, Obama won because plenty of Republicans and independents voted for him. Second, I hate to burst your bubble, but I support same-sex marriages and will be attending the wedding of a life-long friend this summer. The youth you speak of may not be racists, which is wonderful, but like me and most working Americans, I saw my opinions change to be more fiscally conservative as my career progressed, and I saw more and more of my taxes going toward welfare and state/municipal unions. Finally, explain to me just how the Republicans "control" Congress? They may control the House -- and it wasn't JUST Republicans who voted in this particular House -- but Democrats control the Senate and the Presidency. Republicans can't pass any bills Harry Reid refuses to consider. And here's a shocker, marinmom: I support the legalization of marijuana, think that we should bring all our soldiers home and keep our common nose out of the business of other countries, and I'm just waiting for them to make something small enough so that I can power my home with a solar unit. I also support building wind farms. Do you understand the difference between so-called red and blue states? The WELFARE QUEENS as you call them are all Democrats, vote for Democrats, and voted for your president because they thought he was going to pay their rent and buy their gas for them! And I really don't need a lecture from you on economics; I have an MBA, and I am well aware of both where the revenues come from and how you liberal nutjobs squander them. You are the ones who are for every social giveaway anyone suggests, and the more there are, the better it is for Democrats. People who depend on the government vote for Democrats because they know they will be given what the rest of us have to work for.

Becky,...here's a vowel, buy a clue.

Oklahoma has **gasp** a predominant Republican 'base' and this may shock you,...welfare recipients. Who vote Republican.

It is a common myth that Republicans spin to claim that only Democrats are unemployed or on welfare. Sorry toots, not true,...but do carry on with the 'facts' according to Republicans.

    #27.5 - Sat Nov 26, 2011 2:57 AM EST

You just proved my point, honeybunch. So Oklahoma is predominantly Republican ... are they predominantly poor and dependent on the government? And I know that it was those bad, hateful Republicans who make tons of money running big corporations who contributed so much to Obama's campaign who helped him win! I never said that all welfare recipients were Democrats. I simply pointed out that people who depend on the government are the most likely to want to keep the government as it exists in power, toots.

That would mean he would have to work...and work hard. I believe this is a way for him to get massive amounts of money for speaking engagements and sell his books. What a disgrace to the black community!

The only reason I wouldn't vote for Herman Cain is because he has a stinky, arrogant attitude. Atleast Obama and Bush were friendly and pleasant to be around. If he was nicer and more humble, then maybe. His 9-9-9 plan was very clever. But with those harrassment allegations, I feel that more dirt is just going to surface from his past. With his attitude and his accusations, he would not make a good preisdent.

The minute a person makes this kind of comment ( I will get the black vote because I am black) he tells me how little he thinks of the intelligence of a portion of the voting public. Intelligent voters will not concern themselves with race or religion. What they want is a candidate who will get the job done, period. If you look at it from his perspective , given Obamas track record . People would tend to shy away from himfor that very reason.

Given the fact I believe most voters are honest, hard working people not racially biased where the important matters come up, this guys arguement does not hold water.

All Obama wants to do is take from those that have put their nose to the grindstone and earned what they have and give it to those too lazy to make a living themselves.

Obama has spend us into the poor house and now he claims he wants to cut the deficit? Why didn't he care about that from the beginning?

Now that the economy is past that danger, its time to work on the deficits...as he has agreed to himself.

Accumulated wealth is certainly no gauge of how hard one has worked. My wife and I, like many other americans, have at times worked two or three jobs to make ends meet. We have watched hard earned money be gobbled up by medical bills because we couldn't afford private health insurance and didn't have access to a group policy through our employers.
