Subscribe to RSSSen. Patty Murray (D) and Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R), the co-chairs of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, released the following statement (after the markets closed):
After months of hard work and intense deliberations, we have come to the conclusion today that it will not be possible to make any bipartisan agreement available to the public before the committee's deadline.
Despite our inability to bridge the committee's significant differences, we end this process united in our belief that the nation's fiscal crisis must be addressed and that we cannot leave it for the next generation to solve. We remain hopeful that Congress can build on this committee's work and can find a way to tackle this issue in a way that works for the American people and our economy.
We are deeply disappointed that we have been unable to come to a bipartisan deficit reduction agreement, but as we approach the uniquely American holiday of Thanksgiving, we want to express our appreciation to every member of this committee, each of whom came into the process committed to achieving a solution that has eluded many groups before us. Most importantly, we want to thank the American people for sharing thoughts and ideas and for providing support and good will as we worked to accomplish this difficult task.
We would also like to thank our committee staff, in particular Staff Director Mark Prater and Deputy Staff Director Sarah Kuehl, as well as each committee member's staff for the tremendous work they contributed to this effort. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Douglas Elmendorf and Mr. Thomas Barthold and their teams at the Congressional Budget Office and Joint Committee on Taxation, respectively, for the technical support they provided to the committee and its members.

Hi. Im a liberal democrat. I am more intelligent than everyone else, and my smug attitude only shows how stupid everyone else is that isnt a liberal democrat. I have an understanding that the peole of this country are too stupid to handle their own affairs, so I want agencies protecting agencies supervising agencies to make sure those that dont need any help pay most of their income to those in need. I either work for these agencies, or get paid to help people that do. Deficit shmeficit! Its fake money anyway. I only care that I get mine today, and let someone else take care of the problems tomorrow. After all, i believe the rich and upper middle class should give more of their income, with NO RESENTMENT AT ALL, so I can keep the less fortunate enslaved and dependent. hey, thats who votes for my friends! They paid cash, american dollars, with only one months interest(25 billion). i think they bought it with the money we borrowed, but i dont care. I hear they are doing this all over the U.S.The new mayor of that area is chinese, and he convinced the city mayor to change immigration laws for chinese citizenship. Its cool, isnt it? Should we on the right side of the aisle contribute to the hatred and stupidity by calling Democrats "cute" NAMES like Dumbocrats, and Demothugs, and Democrappers? Of course not. the only way this"super"committee is ever going to work is to have pelosi and reed select the 6 republican members,while mcconnel and the boner appoint the 6 democrats...this might better the chance of getting people who would be more willing to compromise,and hopefully come to a few agreements,rather than those were created mostly along party lines...

Not a problem. There are automatic cuts that will fix everything. They will take place in January of 2013. Just after the general election.
Before then, we can expect another Obama credit downgrade. That will be the second Obama credit downgrade in six months. This is the great Obama Depression. It's funny that the main article says "there may be a silver lining to the committee's failure to reach agreement" and then MSNBC posts a poll asking who to blame? Who to blame for what?
The failure to reach agreement, combined with Obama's promise to veto any attempts to undo the automatic spending cuts, is probably the best possible outcome of this disastrous committee mess. We'll finally see a 10% military cut, 2% medicare cut, and hopefully big agriculture cuts to end the corporate welfare for the mega-farms, since those are about the only things left to cut (since social security, veterans benefits, and a few other areas were excluded from the automatic cuts.)
Democrats, Republicans, and the President should all be praised for being obstinate!
Now, if Obama could only figure out how to stimulate business and generate new hiring in the private sector without spending more billions we don't have. Then we would start to see some improvement in this horrible Obama economy.

Was this a joke. If they worked together as a group then they would have come up with a resolution. This committee and the congress are the worst in history. They put their self serving goals before the people who elected them. We need to wise up and kick them out on the next election. They were intended to fail, the members were chosen to ensure they failed so they failed! Get over it. Every bit of this can be fixed by tossing the big spenders and the HNIC out and replacing them all with fiscal conservatives.

We have nothing coming from the Senate the body that votes on all measures for six years. The House can pass but the senate must approve. It does not even read under Herr Reed. The Senate is democratic.
Republicans and Democrats in the Congress are worth over $837,000 USD. We can blame both parties sure and the taxes from the rich that make up 1% can be increased as well as the taxes from the other 40% of Americans that pay. All this will not dent this mans spending programs and $15 Trillion deficit today. So how is $1.5 Trillion or even $4 Trillion that does not even happen until after 2013 even help? I keep hearing him on TV spouting how the Repubs will stay in line and not raise taxes on the 1%. I never hear the network interviewer, like let's say one from MSNBC ask who Norquist is paid by. Why is no one looking out for the majority out here? Why are you setting up a Lobbyist as the expert on what should happen to the country? Has your network sold out to the right wing also?
