VIDEO: Gingrich's long list of flip flops

NBC's Domenico Montanaro reports on a host of issues that Newt Gingrich, the latest Republican to surge to the top of the polls, has been for before he was against. It's a long list of reversals for a candidate with a long history in Washington.

This is not mere flip-flopping. It is hucksterism in its purest form. Gingrich is EVERYTHING that is wrong with D.C.

He is "for sale" plain and simple. It takes the right wing a few days to get up to speed, but when they do, Gingrich will drop faster than any of the other shooting stars of the G.O.P.

He is the ultimate sellout, the ultimate lobbyist, the ultimate in sleazy. He is very well aware of his baggage. He knows he cannot be elected because it is all going to come out.

All this disgusting POS is doing right now is stuffing his bank accounts with money from the truly stupid. He's laughing at them, right along with Callista as they make their way to Tiffany's before their next cruise.

Newt Gingrich is a scam artist extraordinaire. The man has no ethics when it comes to politics or making money. He will say and do anything to achieve whatever his goal. Anyone who sends notices to businesses and doctors telling them they can receive a special "Newt" plaque touting their business as selected by Newt to win an award, by attending special awards dinners for a mere....$2,000 or $5,000 or whatever the asking price, is a bottom scum feeder. If this primary season has proved nothing else, it's that the Republican Party is dead. From the debt ceiling debacle, to Grover Norquist's apparent grip on Republican politicians, to the sad parade of crazy, unqualified and hypocritical "presidential" candidates, it's evident that the Republicans have devolved into a party of unethical, talent-less, and grasping low life scum. Why in the world would voters return these people to power?

John Kerry who calls for higher taxes but hypocritically uses any loophole possible to avoid higher taxes

Barack Obama and his crony capitalism under the guise of "green" energy.

So it's down to this, calling the Right "crazy", "unqualified", "unethical, "low life scum", and "hypocritical".

Why would the voters return the GOP to power? Probably because the Democrats class warfare and destruction of wealth has made them unemployed and hungry.

How does anyone watch the clip of Newt at the religious forum, contempuously suggesting OWS protesters get jobs, and not wonder how he could be so out of touch not to realize that might be difficult with unemployment at 9%?

A smarter politician would address the anxiety people feel in this economic climate, but Newt is not smart, he's self-serving, and as phoney as they come. The bottom line is, which party is dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans, and which party is dedicated to protecting the tax rate of the wealthiest 1 %? By their own addmittion, the Republicans' top priority is keeping the Bush tax cuts in place. They refuse to raise revenues in exchange for spending cuts; perhaps because Republican districts depend as much on pork as anyone. I don't know how you can characterize a party like that as anything but corrupt. They do not put the interests of the country above the wishes of special interests.

Amy, well said. It may not be dead but it is certainly not doing well. The once Grand Old Party has been reduced to wimpering at the feet of Grover Nordquist as well as having stepped so far to the right as to be a dozen bricks short of a load and close to the looney bin.

Alan, there were many republicans on that list of insider knowledge or don't they count.

Very true, but what are the protester's proposals? How come there are jobs in Nebraska and Dakota that cannot be filled? The majority of the protesters appear to be young, who are looking for their first job. Do they expect that it will be in the location they want, or will they have to move to where the jobs are? I'm a bit older but there was a point in my career when I had to leave home on Monday morning and didn't return until Friday night. It paid the bills and you did what you had to do to support your family. I don't think Gingrich is right but I don't have much sympathy for these protests. There are too many spoilt kids taking part.

I don't know, Romney takes every side because he thinks it is in his best political interest.

Newt takes whatever side he is paid to take. I don't think even Newt thought he was a viable candidate, I think he just wanted to sell more books and get ever larger fees as a lobbyist (whoops, I meant "historian".)

In other words Romney's concern is about getting elected and Newt is just a prostitute.

It's a small difference, but it is a difference.

Frank---there is a difference between evolution of opinion and even an occasional change of position for political expediency and wholesale flip-flopping such as we are seeing with the current crop of GOP candidates. Add to it Gingrich's explanation for some of his behaviors (like his love for his country made him have affairs, which has now apparently morphed into he read about AA) and it paints a picture of a person with no moral compass.

John Kerry was the original target of the "flip flopper" label, and all he did was vote against spending money on Iraq, after it became apparent the Bush administration was cocking up the situation, although they originally had the nation's support. Kerry wasn't even benefitting politically by switching his position, he was merely acting on what we all saw: the Bush administration was leading us into a long fiasco.

I have no problem with "evolution of thought". Honestly, if we were all required to form one opinion and stick with it our whole lives, we'd be in trouble. However, I think it is up to the individual voter to determine whether a politician has experienced such evolution of thought, or is simply taking both sides of an issue to score political points. I'd be fine with Domenico showing videos of every candidate espousing different sides of an issue and deciding for myself whether that candidate is genuine or simply "flip-flopping". I guess what I'm trying to ask is why we are seemingly singling out one candidate. If this is the first in a series of such videos on ALL candidates on both sides of the aisle, I am fine with that. (Full disclosure, I am NOT a Newt Gingrich supporter and don't see myself voting for him in the primary).

Gotta disagree on this one, Frank. There's a difference between a flip flop and listening to the opposition's case for why an alternative idea is reasonable and agreeing--individual mandate comes to mind.

I do not have a problem with Romney's change of position from pro-choice to pro-life but I do have a problem with the fact that his view changes depending on what office he is seeking and what the majority view is of those folks he wants to vote for him. That's flip flopping.

I have a problem with Newt Gingrich demanding a No-fly Zone and action in Libya and two weeks or so later because President Obama succeeded in getting the UN to do just that, suddenly he was totally against it. That's a flip flop.

With the exception of Jon Hunstman, there's not a GOP candidate on that stage who doesn't have serious credibility issues based on the number of flip flops often within days and sometimes hours.

We all having evolving views. It is how we age. Back in the 90's, I wasn't keen on the Clinton HC idea, seemed a step too far but in the nearly 20 years since, the private insurance companies have tremendous power over us; the rising costs of health care made me realize that reform was necessary. That's not a flip flop.

Frank, I hear what you're saying and agree but right now it is the GOP primary candidates that are the focus. After the GOP selects a nominee, then we will see more focus on President Obama and that nominee. It's just where we are in the 2012 presidential race.

#6.8 - Mon Nov 21, 2011 11:49 AM EST

Grimey, I take your point. But these were head-scratching complete reversals of positions from Gingrich. The only flip-flop by President Obama that is similar is his position on mandates. That was an egregious flip flop. He said he was against them, made a point of it, likely because it was a good general-election position. But then, as we all know, changed his view. The Clinton people argued of course he'd have to change his view because of the need to widen the pool as it relates to cost.

Closing Gitmo is a promise broken, but the White House tried to do it. But it ran into the reality that no member of Congress was willing to take prisoners into their home state. Trials for detainees is another, but that, too, they tried and got significant blow back. So they changed.

His support, or lack thereof, for the space program is another area that could also be listed. But that was again because they ran into budgetary restraints.

He didn't roll back the Bush tax cuts for those making above $250,000, but that was part of a deal with Congress that also got an extension of unemployment benefits. The president still supports keeping the Bush tax cuts in place for those making less than $250,000 and letting them expire for those who make more, but he needs Congress' help to do that. If he just lets them expire, they go up on everyone.

Obama has favored public financing, but obviously, he hasn't done that. But why? Because the realities are that it's highly unlikely you can run a publicly financed campaign and win, especially in this time of largely unchecked outside groups.

And on war, some of his timelines have been mushy (after consulting with generals), but Obama has generally gone in the same direction as what he campaigned on -- wind down the war in Iraq and ramp up, but eventually end the war in Afghanistan. Iraq is winding down by the end of this year, and troops are still on track to be leaving Afghanistan.

A lot of Obama's so-called "flip flops" or changes in position -- except the mandate, which is his most egregious -- are ones of practicality.

Gingrich has a plan to RESTORE Americaa.

Here's the truth about "the Forgotten 15 Bills" from the House and the Failed Obama Presidency:

"Campaigning for another failed stimulus and more job destroying taxes, President Obama has repeatedly—and falsely—asserted that “Congress isn’t willing to move” legislation to facilitate job growth. While the president plays politics, House Republicans have been working and approving legislation to promote economic growth and job creation. The House has approved more than 15 bills that, if enacted, would immediately help to grow the economy without more failed stimulus spending. These bills are currently stalled in the Democrat-controlled Senate and the president has not encouraged the Senate to act."

U.S. Representative (now Senator) Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) told The New Yorker:

“I think we’ve got a major crisis in democracy… We assume that voters will restrain the growth of government because it becomes burdensome to them personally. But today fewer and fewer people pay taxes, and more and more are dependent on government, so the politician who promises the most from government is likely to win. Every day, the Republican Party is losing constituents, because every day more people can vote themselves more benefits without paying for it. The tax code will destroy democracy, by putting us in a position where most voters don’t pay for government.”[7]

There are 24 Democratic Senators coming up for re-election this cycle. Republicans only need a net win of three of those seats to tip the balance and win control of the senate.

Then old (Whorehouse) Harry Reid, the biggest obstructionist in congress, can go sit in the back of the chamber and mumble to himself. He will no longer be Senate Majority leader, and will be unable to obstruct the pending legislation that the country needs so desperately to be enacted.

Excuse me, but it is the GOP minority that has been obstructing for nearly 3 years or do you just ignore the abuse of the filibuster to complain about democrats. Did you miss First Thoughts this morning that said only 55 pieces of legislation have been passed by the GOP House and sent to the Senate. Most of it having nothing to do with jobs and everything to do with women's reproductive rights. Some 400 pieces of legislation passed by the democratic House from 2009 through 2010, sits gathering dust because Mitch McConnell's merry band of do nothings, filibustered, blocked, obstructed and put secret holds on each and every piece. Want to talk "obstruction", one only needs to look at Mitch McConnell and his friends "our goal is to defeat President Obama". Yep, those guys.

Newter will wipe the floor with President Obama. How can he lose. He has embraced every position any voter could care about. Everybody can see something they like in Newter.

Even his personal life covers all the bases. Convicted felons can be inspired by his own rehabilitation and return to Jesus. Serial adulterers see a successful role model. Entrepreneurs can admire his ability to suck cash out of Freddie Mac while trashing its management.

Even schoolchildren will see the virtue in firing the union janitors so they have access to gainful employment. Unemployed parents will welcome the extra income.

I love how the media makes a fool of itself by accusing others of flip flopping when they have protected Obama and all his lies and flip flopping. I think I would call it selective censorship. Just go back and watch all his tv clips. Lord knows there is tons of them, then tell me who the king of flip flop is. I suggest the dems look in the mirror before they point the finger.

You need to put down your knitting needles, turn off Fox News and get out a little. The Republican Presidential Candidates are a bunch of turkeys and as turkeys they can only talk turkey !!!

Why not skip Gingrich and write about the real issues....

Step1. They assemble a "Super Committee" to CUT deficits and debt.

Step2. The Republicans walk in and say "let's cut this, let's cut that....."

Step3. The Democrats walk in and say "let's raise taxes."

Hey "Princess" Nancy and "Prince" Harry...... Why don't you do your da#@ JOBS ??!!!!!!

Why don't the Republican do the jobs that they were elected for in 2010 ?

Raising taxes on the wealthiest 1% who own 40% of the wealth in America is the answer. Cutting entitlements to Americans who gave their blood, sweat and tears to this country is not. Just ask you daddy George H.W. Bush who said "read my lips, no new taxes" but taxed the nation anyway as an answer to a problem.

                            hey Jim,

                            Where have you been?

47% of Americans pay NO taxes.

Since President Obama has been MIA during the whole debt debate......Maybe Michelle Obama will do the job the President was elected to do !?

Michelle is at least " leading " the kids to do the right thing........

Michelle Obama: "You guys ( military kids) are leaders in your own right. You're taking care of your parents. You're getting good grades. And I know you're eating your vegetables, right?"

( Michelle, put down that fried chicken !!! ) LOL
