Bachmann goes after Gingrich on his abortion record

Republican presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., greets audience members Saturday after the Thanksgiving Family Forum sponsored by The Family Leader in Des Moines, Iowa.

By NBC's James Novogrod and Carrie Dann

Although the Family Leader Thanksgiving forum held on Saturday night had far less inter-candidate fireworks than a typical Turkey Day family reunion, Rep. Michele Bachmann launched an attack even before the candidates walked off stage.

The Bachmann campaign sent an email skewering the newly surging Newt Gingrich’s record on abortion.

“Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has failed to uphold a consistently pro-life stance throughout his career in public life,” the email reads. Team Bachmann accuses Gingrich of being "open to watering down the Republican Party's commitment to the inalienable right to life."

The candidate told reporters that she only intends to draw a contrast with other candidates' "surprises."

"What we're trying to do is underscore again the fact that there are differences in the candidates and you won't find surprises with me," she said.

Asked after the forum to comment, Gingrich appeared incredulous.

"I have no idea what she's talking about," he said, later adding "I'm not going to comment randomly on emails I haven't read."

The attack from Bachmann is the second time this week that she has targeted Gingrich. She honed in on reports about his consulting for Freddie Mac earlier this week, telling voters she "wasn't shilling" for the mortgage giant before the financial crisis.

inalienableadjective incapable of being conveyed, incapable of being sold, incapable of being transferred, nontransferable, not able to be conveyed, quod abalienari non potest, secured by law, unable to be bought, unable to be disposed of, unforfeitable, untouchable

Can someone please tell Ms. Bachmann that an inalienable right to life means you can't execute people.

Poor Michelle. Married to a fat homophobic gay man. She just needs some long stroking and throat poking, and she will be fine.

Psst, can someone please tell this lady her campaign ended three months ago? Apparently she didn't get the memo.

Will someone please tell Michele that no one cares what she thinks? I don't have her number. :)

I would guess that several years back the[ philandered in chief ]supported abortions in every instance it came up. The current old man Newt probably doesn 't even remember what abortion means.Being an ex Georgia cracker I am pretty sure Newt new of and more than likely advised it to prospects.

I am amazed that this is all the republican party could come up with. If their goal is to defeat the current president, you would have thought they would have put a little effort into it. They needed to find one candidate that can reach out and get the vote from a mix of citizens, not just the teaparty faction. And if one of them is elected, by a long shot, does that mean the Norquist guy will really be the one calling the shots and they would just be a political puppet?

As soon as one of these clowns is nominated, they will run to the center, pissing off the TPers. Should be pretty funny to watch!

Why do you think the clown posse are the only GOP candidates running this year? That's what the party bosses want in the Oval Office, a puppet. It's why Huntsman and Paul don't stand a chance. I guess they finally figured out that Bachmann's too crazy to be a reliable puppet, and Perry's too stupid. He'd slip up and let the cat out of the bag one day about getting his orders from Norquist et al (oops!).

I think flbik is right, first you have to get nominated then you have to get elected which require two different sets of people.

We all know the left 20% liberals will vote for a democrat and the right 20% conservatives will vote for a GOP but it is the middle 60% who will make the final choice at the voting booths. If a candidate wants to win he/she has to stand slight right or left of middle which eliminates Bachman.

The question is when a candidate wins will they stay close to the middle. GWB almost immediately after winning about 50% of the votes immediatley declared he got political capital to carry out the conservative agenda [far shift to the right]. I think Obama has shown he is consistently close to the middle but I don't trust any GOP candidate on this so far.

Lol, Bachmann "attacking" Gingerich for not being quite vigilant enough when it comes to supporting archaic subjagation of women, taking away their right to control their own bodies. You better come out with a strong statement now Newt, say you want to force rape victims to bear their attackers child. That'll please the "moral" people on the right! Honestly, how can ANY woman support the GOP?

This story is a none starter but if it were not so much fun to comment I guess I would not be here.

How does it go .. the pot calling the kettle black or better, Gingrich is the one eyed man in the land of the blind.

I guess I would not be worried about her chances of getting to the presidency if it were not for the story of the insignificant little corporal who made it to the top.

Bachamann is probably mad that she is the only one Ginghrich didn't make a pass at. He now knows how lucky he was ,she could have been wife 7, 8, 9.

I say please stay in the race! At least Ms. B can be entertaining and hilarious to watch... with all the fun fact checking follies that follow her every word. It's also been nice to not hear Ms. Palin say anything. Where Ms. B is entertaining, Ms. P was just downright frusterating and annoying.

Less government, more government. These candidates can't decide. All I know is there is not one candidate that has the moral fortitude to tell us what we should think and believe. You may have personal thoughts on abortion (I do) but it is not the governments place to dictate our moral caliber. With my children that option was not available, we didn't need it because they were taught my morals, not from someone else or the government.

Bachmann accuses Gingrich of being "open to watering down the Republican Party's commitment to the inalienable right to life."

Let's be crystal clear here, the thugs insist on a right to "birth," not "life".

They couldn't care less what happens to anyone 5 seconds after the little bundle of joy arrives.

Abortion and women's bodies should not be a political football! It is strictly HEALTH RELATED and the government has NO BUSINESS controlling it OR funding it. Leave abortion out of politics!

Michelle...it is about jobs...not abortion. Abortion is legal...it is the law. Talk about jobs!!!! Funny how the GOP is so into the "spirit in the sky" issues, not jobs. They complain about it but keep worrying about their conversations with the sky fairy...tells you they don't have a plan/clue.

Bachmann, give up the ghost, already; withdraw from the race.

Abortion only makes sense if you knew beforehand that the child would be a paraplegic, mentally incapable (like you), ghastly deformed (like Cain) or a total idiot (like Gingrich). Now, I understand why republicans are against abortion...

Lets get the Federal out of a woman's womb.  It should be up to the woman who is pregnant whether or not to receive and pay for an abortion.

It should not be up to you or to I whether she should carry the unwanted child.  The choice should be left up to her.
