Republican presidential candidate will begin receiving protection from the Secret Service at his campaign's request, NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reported Thursday.
Cain will be the first Republican presidential candidate to begin receiving protection after having applied for a detail with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
Sources tell NBC News the Secret Service protection for Herman Cain begins at 8pm tonight. Those involved in the evaluation for using taxpayer dollars this way determined that "there's clearly some credible threats."
Officials will not say whether a specific incident or concern prompted the authorization.
It's not clear what circumstances contributed to Cain's protection; the service will not say when the detail will begin or whether any specific concerns prompted this step.
Cain had previously been protected by a private detail. That private detail came under scrutiny Thursday for its interaction with a reporter. Texas Gov. Rick Perry receives protection through the Texas state police, and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann's private security had also previously prompted reporter complaints.

Sorry, you may disagree with me but however much I dislike the man himself, he has a right to run, and to not fear for his life by doing so. There are plenty of people who will do most anything to keep another "negro" out of office. Recent incidents have shown that his private security is not up to the task. By the Secret Service taking over, they don't just bring physical security, they bring intel. They are the guys who get the warnings and the head's up about threats.
You may not like it, but a democracy requires it's candidates for office to be able to campaign without threats of violence. With the Secret Service, he'll be able to continue to put his foot in his mouth many more times, safely.
Be nice, guys. He's probably planning a trip to U-becki-becki-stan-stan, to give a foreign policy address.

Secret Service Protection is a core function of the Federal gov, along with military, NOT Welfare, or bailing out Big Biz,.... Duh, and All serious candidates for president should garner Sec Serv Protection because it lessens the possibility of outside forces or groups from effecting OUR election process. If one or more of them are murdered then someone could drive the course of our elections. Protecting our Choice doesn't begin after our leader has been elected. The entire process must be protected for it to have any value.

Additionally, I am amazed by those that are hoping for the candidate with the least chance of beating the POTUS to get the nomination just so Obama has a chance to win. Good point Cassidy, I'm still troubled by the choice of 'Eskimo Barbie' as a running mate for McCain. That was a scary heartbeat away, but not enough for me to vote for Odumber. Alfred E. Neuman was a much better choice, and his head wasn't screwed on wrong from hitting the Hotel Street skivvy houses with Grand-daddy Frank, and doing lines at Occidental. After they are nominated to run as President then they should have protection but I still feel like they should have to reimburse the taxpayers until they are elected.
Why should we shoulder the finacial burden of any of these candidates. Let the Corporations that have been given the rights of individuals pay for protecting them.

So there's your f***king law. Are we 120 days away from the election?
And I would say he's far from being a "major" candidate. He's just a guy trying to sell books who hopes to book engagements for big bucks after it's all over. Quite frankly we should charge him just for taking up space and breathing air.
I guess you need to re-read the "f***ing" law again. A basic grasp of English and sentence structure shows that the 120 days criteria is meant for the "and, within 120 days of the general Presidential election, the spouses of such candidates". (That means the husband/wife in case you need a little extra help realizing that).
There is no time requirement that a candidate must fulfill. And while you might bit*h and moan about his status as a candidate, he is STILL a candidate. Neither you nor I get to pick and choose what laws apply or don't apply to certain people.

Pull the Secret Service back from this assignment. If you cannot pay for your own protection, does that mean that all big named stars should have the Secret Service? Get real everyone this is a waste of taxpayer's money. If Cain is against big government, he doesn't get to use it.. Unless there are a great deal of Secret Service agents sitting around doing nothing this is a waste of taxpayer dollars. There would be a minimum of two agents at all times, working 3 shifts plus. Unless there is an angry husband or boyfriend, I believe his security is his own responsibility, not mine as a taxpayer.

John Kerry and John Edwards requested protection as well in February of 2004, as they were competing for the Democratic nomination.

The press conference was this afternoon announcing the new TEA PARTY movement.They apparently decided that it was time to take all action possibly left,to stop his re-election.
