Perry challenges Pelosi to turn over SEC records

Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Thursday challenged House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to turn over to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) records about her stock dealings, even as critics raised questions about Perry’s own record on government transparency.

“I get it about why Nancy Pelosi doesn’t want to debate me in public, because then she’s going to have to explain why she profited from these insider trading information [in] the stock market,” Perry told reporters in Mississippi, referencing the California Democrat’s scoffing at his offer to debate her in Washington next week.  “But if she won’t explain her activities in a public setting such as a debate then I challenge her to turn over all that information to the SEC or an independent prosecutor to determine if she used insider information through her position in Congress to make money off of her investments.”

Perry’s push on insider trading comes days after a "60 Minutes" feature about the conveniently-timed but technically legal deals made by some lawmakers -- including Pelosi and Republican House Speaker John Boehner -- that resulted in profit to those members of Congress.

"It's unfortunate that a candidate for president is focused on debating anyone other than his primary opponents and repeating false claims from a book by Sarah Palin's speechwriter," said Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi. "It may be news to the Governor, but under the current Republican majority we already have a part-time Congress."

Pelosi's office notes that the leader's husband has held the vast majority of the Visa stock, selling just a small portion in November 2008 that yielded less than $5,000 in profit.

But the Texas governor’s new drive for good governance and a “part-time Congress” have raised the eyebrows of Perry critics who note that he was himself the target of an insider trading allegation in 1996.

According to reports, Perry purchased shares of stock in a donor’s business on the same day that an investment group pushed up the company’s stock shares.

Perry said Thursday that those allegations were dismissed.

“Well the bottom line was the SEC looked at that and said there wasn’t anything to it, so all I’m asking is for Nancy Pelosi to turn over her records to the SEC and let them make that decision,” he said.

The Texas governor also brushed aside questions about how his state has offered economic incentives to companies linked to his donors, saying that all such requests must be reviewed by a series of other government officials outside the governor’s office. “The idea that someone makes a campaign contribution and try to connect that to the dots doesn’t work in this case because we have all the safeguards in place,” he said.

Perry also offered harsh words for the president, who is currently traveling abroad as debt negotiations remain at a stalemate.

“The president is AWOL as far as I’m concerned, as a matter of fact,” Perry said. “Instead of being in Hawaii or Asia or wherever he thinks he is on this particular trip he oughta be here working on this budget issue.

Just like puppies and sex sells products, Teapublicans know it is popular to attack the "liberal media," blame the housing bust on Fannie/Freddie and Dodd and Frank, or in this case target Pelosi.

What's hilarious is Nancy Pelosi's response to Perry's request for a debate in which she pretends to forget the third thing on her schedule that day. Now he is trying to deflect scandal from his racial rock and "crony capitalism" and multiple debate gaffes by trying to make a scandal about a vilified Democratic figure. Next thing you know Scary Perry will be taking shots at the White House from his car?

What we should do is get rid of all aspects of Wall Street that has nothing to do with raising capital for business ventures, and return to taxing transactions, no matter who owns the stock.

All you libs are so blinded by your desire to see only democrats in office. I don't care why Perry is going after pelosi, i don't care what he thinks his gains are. She is corrupt, all of them are, but she is so smug about it and yet none of you libs will ever consider that.

Obviously he's not going to attack Boehner while he's running for the republuican nominee, but not one of you libs will actually say "Pelosi really is stealing from people and should be looked at". Just for the record you smug fools, when you make money for yourself on nwallstreet, someone else loses money, especially in the case of insider trading.

Keep working to bankrupt the country, whatever you do, dont learn

Yes, yes, the "libs" are corrupt. Pelosi is smug, stealing from the people. Insider trading is wrong and it is not limited to a stupid political party in Washington. I guess you missed Boehner's response to the same question? He said the same damn thing as Pelosi. What is with you people. Do you only hear out of one ear at a time? Right for the sanctimonious and never the left?

Again, only using one ear. This outstanding Congress has a 9% approval rating. They have obstructed important bills by filibuster.

    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/ezra-klein/2009/11/the_filibuster_has_gone_from_a.html

According to research by UCLA political scientist Barbara Sinclair, there was an average of one filibuster per Congress during the 1950s. That number has grown steadily since and spiked in 2007 and 2008 (the 110th Congress), when there were 52 filibusters. More broadly, according to Sinclair, while 8 percent of major legislation in the 1960s was subject to "extended-debate-related problems" like filibusters, 70 percent of major bills were so targeted during the 110th Congress.

Read that again: from 8 percent -- pretty infrequently -- to 70 percent, or rule of the day. (These data come from Sinclair and from her chapter in CQ Press's Congress Reconsidered.)

      #3.2 - Fri Nov 18, 2011 11:48 AM EST

And because democrats are putting these plans out you just assume they are worth passing?

Maybe they needed to be killed, every democrat plan is to spend more on "welfare" systems and special interests and tax more. That doesn't work, just because a democrat presented it, which they didnt when they had control, doesn't make it good.

Governor Perry, speaking of President Obama's trip, here you go -

On the margins of the President’s trip, trade transactions were announced or showcased, exceeding $25 billion in total value (and an additional $14 billion in potential value) and supporting an estimated 127,000 U.S. jobs ….. Notable examples include:

      • Boeing 737s to Indonesia: The Boeing Company and Lion Air have reached agreement on the purchase of 201 Boeing 737MAX and 29 Next Generation 737ER aircraft. The President will join a signing ceremony between the representatives of Boeing and Lion Air on November 18 …. The order will support over 110,000 U.S. jobs at Boeing and at suppliers in 43 states. This represents one of the largest trade deals between the United States and Indonesia in history….

      • Boeing 777s to Singapore: The Boeing Company and Singapore Airlines have reached agreement on the purchase of eight Boeing 777-300ER widebody aircraft with a total list price value of $2.4 billion, $2 billion in U.S. export content and supporting an estimated 11,000 U.S. jobs…..

      • GE Engines to Indonesia: GE is signing a contract to sell 50 CFM56 engines to Garuda Airlines of Indonesia, for $1.3 billion. This deal will represent $650 million in U.S. export content and support close to an estimated 5,000 U.S. jobs at GE’s plants in Ohio and North Carolina and at suppliers across the nation.

      • Sikorsky Helicopters to Brunei: Sikorsky has been selected by the Brunei Ministry of Defense to supply 12 Blackhawk S-70i helicopters …. The value of the deal is $325 million, with $200 million in U.S. export content supporting an estimated 1,100 U.S jobs……

Now tell us Gov. Perry, Romney, Gingrich, Bachmann, Santorum, Huntsman, Paul - tell us all about your hard work. We're waiting.

      Pat,

Interesting that all these transactions are aviation-related. Airplanes are something we do better than anyone else in world.

I sometimes wonder how that prowess could be transferred to other U.S. manufacturing ventures. Admittedly, flying machines are fantastically expensive and not many companies make them, but wouldn't it be cool if along with 737s the Indonesians bought a million dollars worth of Fords?

Despite Mr. Perry's derision it is essential the president spends time out and about the globe. Part of his job.

Why didn't Obama go to Solyndra's customers and get them to spend? It's more feel good nonsense. These deals take years top put together. Unless Obama gave them the money to spend (no one would be surprised) all he did was show up at the photo-op. What do you think he actually did? Specifically.

I think you're all (including Governor Perry) missing the point. Whether she used insider information or not, at least for the time being, it's legal under the current rules. If everyone (including myself) is angered that the laws that normal U.S. citizens have to obey, don't apply to members of Congress, regardless of party affiliation, then "We the People" have to make sure that our elected representatives change the law so that they are equally culpable for actions that would send a regular citizen to prison. Governor Perry should also challenge John Boehner, and anyone else identified in the earlier article to prove their trades were not influenced by insider knowledge.

Perry should dig deeper. I'll point him in the right direction: Pelosi helped pass the last minimum wage increase, which was good! However, Peloci had one group of workers excluded. That group was those that worked in the Tuna industry - Why? Because Pelosi's husband has millions of dollars invested in the Tuna industry. Who profited? None other than the Pelosi's. This should be investigated.

Or, we could investigate why Pelosi, when she was the leader of the House, felt she had to have the most expense airplane of anyone in the House. Or, investigate why she thinks she had to have the largest office in the House.

Perry does shave something else right! I am hoping Perry, Cain, etc., turn the tables and start attacking those who oppose them at any and every level. Remember how quick the Left went after Palin? Even though they had no idea where her home town was. Remember the vicious attacks on Cain by the Socialist Party? Even though nearly one of the accusers did not want Cain to face his accusers. BTW - Almost all of these accusers are from Illinois. And, get this, most work for, in one way or another, democratic organizations in Illinois.

On the other hand, maybe this is just about (Pelosi) trying to shut those that disagree up. I've never met a socialist yet that liked free speech.

Those Occupy protesters seem to like free speech. I think socialists like free speech when Perry, Bachmann, or Cain exercise it. It will make the general election so much easier.

So, Rick....what's the obsession over Nancy these days? Everyone knows you're not presidential material. I have news for you - you're not Speaker of the House material either. Besides, we already have an incompetent Speaker right now. Desperation does strange things!

Right on every account, only thing you forgot is that we're still far better off than the previous speaker who couldn't come up with a cognitive thought. The second greatest panderer on the planet.

Rick -- your finished. You probably won't even be reelected in Texas. Even Texans are embarrassed they elected such a complete moron as governor.

Charlie Rick is not presidential material. So lets be honest! Why arent tou Libtards upset by the insider trading of Ms Pilosi? She obviously has been bright enough to hoodwink the liberals into thinking she cares about the middle class and the poor!

Hey teatard -- while I disagree with congressional insider trading it is legal. And if you Nancy is the ONLY one involved and (or) if you think no Republican is involved --- than you're not much smarter than Perry. Insider trading in congress had nothing to do with the fact that Rick Perry moron and is probably one of the very worst candidates who has ever ran for President from a major political party.

Perry’s push on insider trading comes days after a "60 Minutes" feature about the conveniently-timed but technically legal deals made by some lawmakers -- including Pelosi and Republican House Speaker John Boehner -- that resulted in profit to those members of Congress.

Since the 60 minutes report commented on both Pelosi AND Boehner, unless Gov. Perry wishes to call them both out to hand over their records to the SEC, then this is nothing more than a personal/political attack, rather than a real question about wrong doing.

You'd have to be pretty smart to attack your own party's house speaker while running for pres. They all should be investigated, thats pretty damn obvious, but if you can't see how awful Pelosi was on that 60minutes, how she was completely caught in a lie and knows she's a thief and had her hand in the cookie jar.

Boehner's answer was obviously to not implicate himself so he just said he didnt directly do it, probably in essence, true, but still the same thing.

Pelosi was such a smug bitch about answering, she isn't intelligent enough to have even come up with what Boehner said, so she was just the ass that she is and blew it off. She only called on him to question ebcause she thought she'd be safe with 60minutes ebing so liberal. About time one liberal media source decided to actually do some reporting instead of campaigning/smearing.

Gov. Perry should be careful otherwise people will want to see he financial statements regarding the shady land deal with this political allies in Horseshoe Bay, Tx and the record for Texas Emerging Technology Fund. The more I learn of Perry the less and less I like.
