Cain's security tangles with reporter in Florida

After Herman Cain exited a restaurant in Coral Springs, Florida on Wednesday a journalist from CBS was struck by a man later identified as a plainclothes police officer. The two then go into an argument filmed by NBC News.

PALM BAY, FLORIDA -- Herman Cain’s surge in popularity has led to an increased security presence on the campaign trail and several reported run-ins with press, the most recent of which happened yesterday at two campaign stops in South Florida.

Cain first stopped at Versailles Restaurant in Little Havana, Miami, where he was swarmed by at least fifteen TV cameras from local and national outlets. After a speech outside, Cain went into the restaurant’s bakery area to shake hands with patrons, as the crush of media squeezed through a tiny single door and cameramen jockeyed for the best shot, occasionally blocked by one of the three bodyguards surrounding Cain.

As the jostling got particularly pitched, one reporter, ABC's Susan Archer, shouted for all the shoving to stop. “Hey! Hey! Hey! Stop it! Stop it! Right now! Everybody chill out! Stop pushing!”

Logistics were equally tight, and the mood equally tense at the second event of the day, a rally outside Wings Plus restaurant in Coral Springs. After the event Cain entered the restaurant, crammed with bodies, to shake hands with supporters.

While he still had a few security guards with him, they did not seem to be enough to hold back the crowds so Cain could make his way through the restaurant, as a few employees from Wings Plus (identified by their “Wings Plus” polo shirts) began asking people to move out of the way. “Make a hole!” one employee yelled to the crowd at one point.

But it was outside the event where the Cain security detail had its most heated encounter with a journalist that day.

As reporters ran outside to cover Cain’s exit from the restaurant and walk to his bus, one journalist, Lindsey Boerma of CBS, was struck by a man who was later revealed as a plainclothes police officer. Boerma said the officer, identified by the Coral Springs police department as Sgt. William Reid, stuck his arm out and clotheslined her.

The two got into an argument after the encounter which was filmed by NBC News.

Reid: you hurt my arm, actually. What's your name?

Boerma: Are you kidding me?

Reid: No I'll need your name because you actually hurt my arm when you ran into it.

Boerma: You stabbed it out in front of me, are you kidding?

Reid: I’ll need your information.

Boerma: No!

Reid: Are you serious?

Lindsey: I’m trying to do a job here.

Reid: You actually hurt my arm when you ran into my arm. Now she’s gotta give me her information.

Boerma: You jabbed your arm out at me!

Reid: You ran into me!

Boerma: Because you stuck your arm out at me twice!

Reid: My arm was there! My arm was there!

Boerma: You should apologize to me.

Reid: You should apologize to me for hurting my arm. You’re not going to apologize to me? That’s not very nice. That’s not very nice.

At this point, Reid approached NBC’s camera, which has caught the encounter on tape. Reid took out his cell phone and said he was filming NBC. “I’ll film you for a little bit, too,” he said. When asked whom he was working for, Reid said, “I’m an independent reporter.” (It was not until after the Cain bus had left the event site that police officers revealed he was an undercover police officer).

According to CBS News, three members of Herman Cain’s campaign team later apologized to Boerma for the incident. Cain spokesman JD Gordon told NBC News that the encounter was “preventable” and that the Cain campaign is “looking into the incidents to prevent anything like this from happening again.”

The Coral Springs police department later said that the Cain campaign had hired four city police officers to protect him at the event. Twelve other officers were dispatched to the scene on city time to help “keep the peace,” according to police at the event.

These are not the first incidents reported involving altercations between Cain’s security apparatus and the media. The New York Times reported a brush-up between a bodyguard and a female reporter at an event in Michigan on Nov. 10th, and a Washington Post reporter detailed an encounter with a guard in Iowa on Nov. 15th.

NBC's Andrew Rafferty contributed reporting.

Feisty, Hermie won't have to worry about the press much longer. With the way he dropping in the polls, no one will be paying any attention to him.

And BTW, why is Herman ALWAYS at a restaurant? Guess talking to newspapers gives him a "pause".

JOURNAL SENTINEL:
Would you favor a military strike against Iran to stop that country from developing a nuclear capability?

CAIN: That is not a practical, top-tier alternative and here’s why. If you look at the topography of Iran … Where are you going to strike? It’s very mountainous. That’s what makes it very difficult.

And this from yesterday --

Campaigning today in Miami’s little Havana, Cain asked the crowd “how do you say delicious in Cuban?”

Riddle me this my libbie friends -

The overwhelming consensus here is that Cain has no shot, and is not a viable candidate.

So why does First read continue to highlight him? And why do you all waste so much time talking about him?

Do you typically spend your time and energy focused on lost causes?

So either you think he has no shot, in which case there is no reason to keep discussing him, OR you think he has a viable shot.

I do wonder though, there is so little mention of Romney and particularly Paul, each of whom are currently polling with Cain.

Or is it just easier and more suitable to you dispositions, and the interests of the fine reporters at MSNBC to dog pile on Cain?

Come to think of it, it does seem to fit, given your unrequited love for all things Palin.

So OWS - San Diego just held a moment of silence in support and in solidarity of the White House Shooter.

Absolutely stunning.

This is the only way Cain will get any excitement in his campaign. As we all know Cain will NEVER be the republican nominee, not now, not ever. The whole purpose of this circus is...take a guess...yeah...MONEY. More money for Cain, more money in his future role as Fux lip flapper. More money for his "motivation for suckers" speeches. More money for the lame ass books some right wing hack will write "with" him. More money, more notoriety, a black, male Sarah Palin. The trouble for the repubs is that the entire country is now getting a chance to see just how empty the republicans really are. As I've said before, take away Huntsman and the republican presidential field looks like a toilet that hasn't been flushed for six months.

You have a vivid imagination Spanky. One freaky wing-nut makes an indecipherable suggestions: "

“I think we should have a moment of silence in solidarity for the person they said was from the Washington, D.C. Occupy. Maybe, why did he feel the need to shoot the White House window today?” he asked.

“So I think we should have a moment in solidarity for the White House, and for the guy that shot at the White House today. I don’t know if you heard, but someone shot at the White House window today.”

That's a far cry from "San Diego" holding a moment of silence. Like, What do you mean? The whole friggin city held a moment of silence? NOT!

sounds like the reporters were to blame if you read the article. how many times have you seen reporters or papps run into someone they are trying to tape? i have seen it qiute a bit on the tele. there should be a 5 foot rule. if you dont stay back 5 feet you get knuckle in face. the cop didnt hit her, she ran into his arm. he put it up to keep people back a few feet and this reporter kept going. she probably camps at the local OWS and thinks she deserves to be in his face..

@steveo, you say he is guilty of sexually harrassment, but how is it over a 40 year career the only time he was accused was when these women lost their jobs then he allegedly sexually harrassed them. not before they lost their job but after. the first two women stated thru their lawyer that it happened after they lost their jobs not before. the first one that came forward thru her lawyer stated that after she was notified she was being let go that she then made the report she was sexaully harrassed. sounds like stinkie poo to anyone with a brain.

Steveo, Cains people DID apologize to the reporter for the incident.

Smitty, He was an OFF DUTY undercover cop hired by the Cain Campaign as security; the campaign was paying his salary at the time, cop or not.

As far as who was at fault, I'll wait to see the NBC tape on the incident as proof of that. By the sound of the exchange, though that cop was a real ego-tripper. (a nice way of saying he was a real self-worshipping snot-rag).

As a PS: Have you heard that Cain is the first of the Republican Candidates to be assigned Secret Service protection?

Aggieness, being clothes-lined by a cop who fails to identify himself when asked, then impersonates a journalist, deserves immediate dismissal, forfeiture of all his benefits packages, and jail time of 6 months for 1st degree assault, and additional 18 months in state prison for elevating himself under false pretenses. An authentic American judge would award her $100,000 from the cop that must be paid within 15 days from his own money, plus 39.9 percent interest during the 15 days, and 49.9 percent for each additional hour beginning on the 16th day. The cop should be treated the same as Cain's corporate banker friends treat the rest of us!

Today's story never to see the light of day in Obama worship land, MSNBC:

President Obama’s uncle was back in court today as his lawyer declared that he intends to challenge the legality of the traffic stop that resulted in his arrest for drunken driving.

Obama, a half-brother of the president’s father, sat silently during the brief hearing. Several people in the packed courtroom could be heard whispering excitedly about the presidential relative in their midst. A young man seated behind Obama, 67, quietly chanted, “Free Obama, free Obama.”

A Framingham resident, Obama was arrested by Framingham police Aug. 24 on charges of operating under the influence of alcohol, failure to yield, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. A breath test taken at the police station showed Obama’s blood alcohol level to be .14, according to a report filed by the Framingham police department.

Obama, who was born in Kenya, faces other issues in immigration court. For reasons that are unclear, Obama was ordered deported in 1992 but has remained in the country.

Along with Auntie Zenuiti, on the public dole.

What is scary here ... and i have several cop friends and I know all of them aren't like this ... is that this officer probably does this kind of thing all the time -- throw up his arm so a defendant runs into it, and the defendant gets an additional charge of battery against a police officer thrown into the case -- or that becomes the only charge. But THIS time the idiot didn't think about the fact there were dozens of cameras around when he did it, not just someone that he bullied on the street. It happens all of the time, sorry to say.

It's a known fact that "reporters" get physical and are a pain in the arss. Just because they have the press badge does not give them any more rights than any citizen. But that has not trickled down to them yet.

Well, yeah, reporters usually do have more rights than the average citizens -- upheld by case law for 200 years. It's the fact that so many media outlets are now owned by large corporations that is killing journalism.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Yes, journalists can be invasive and a royal pain. Disrespectful too. However it still doesn't make it right for an "officer of the law" to intentionally clothes-line someone.

              TJK,

You are correct, reporters should be allowed to do whatever it takes to get the story. Sometimes other people will get hurt, (Can you say Princess Diana?), but that is not their problem.

I don't agree with you on your assumption that a woman is no physical match for a police officer. There are many fine women that could beat the snot out of a cop. Not quite sure why you choose to denigrate women in general in your comment?.?.

I totally disagree with your statement that reporters should be allowed to do whatever it takes to get the story. I also disagree with your saying that TJK denigrated women in general in the comment. No one, no one, has the "right" to do whatever it takes to do anything, unless it's an effort in trying to save someone's life. Reporting on what a candidate, any candidate, is saying is hardly news. My God, they say the same thing at every stop on the campaign tour, I never see this as News! And, very few women can beat the snot out of a cop. What kind of women do you hang out with anyway? p.s. I'm a woman!!!!

Node, it just seems like the Rep's are enjoying the sideshow so that they don't have to talk about how they don't have any real ideas about how to fix the economy, either. They would rather keep things terrible as long as possible so that they can try and use that to get whoever their guy is elected next year. If they buckled down and figured out which candidate you could get independents -- the majority of US voters -- to vote for, they'd have to admit its Romney. But he isn't T-Party enough for this group.

The only evidence of a GOP jobs program seems to be to provide an endless stream of characters to be lampooned on Saturday Night Live; they're probably going to have to go to 2 or 3 shows a week to keep up with this merry band of misfits. However; not everybody is happy; take the comedy writers union. They'll be out of work at this rate, because how can you write anything as funny as what these clowns do and say?

Is that the kind of crybaby that is there "to serve and protect" the folks of Coral Springs? I think you better find some officers that are just a little bit tougher there, Chief. I think your man might have got a bruise or something. Farmers could teach you a thing or two about REAL work. Or maybe you stay out of peoples' way, instead, because of your sensative skin. hahahahahahahaha. What do you guys do when you run into criminals, run and hide? You better, you might bump into something and get another bruise. hahahahaha.

Agreed; the guy came off as a bully. Now let's see if anyone takes him to task for that; my bet is not.
