Cain declines cameras at NH editorial board meeting

By NBC's Jo Ling Kent and Andrew Rafferty

No cameras will be present when Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain sits down with the New Hampshire Union Leader's editorial board tomorrow, NBC News has confirmed.  He will become the first major candidate this election cycle to decline that an interview be filmed in a state where cameras at such gatherings have become commonplace.

The decision to ban cameras from tomorrow's meeting was made by the campaign just two days after Cain drew heat for a shaky answer he gave editors of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel after being asked if he agreed with how President Obama handled Libya.

After the question was asked, Cain took a long pause before answering. When he did begin to speak, Cain asked for clarification and at one point said, "I do not agree with the way he handled it for the following reason -- nope, that's a different one."  He added, "I got all this stuff twirling around in my head."

As for tomorrow's meeting, campaign spokesman JD Gordon told NBC News, "When [Cain's] pauses make national news, you have to look at why you do the things you do."

Gordon told reporters that Cain's answer on Libya had been taken out of context during the more than 30 minute interview.  Cain, the campaign said, had gotten only four hours of sleep and ultimately answered the question correctly.

However, when speaking to reporters yesterday in Iowa, the former businessman remained defiant that there was nothing wrong with his response.

"I don't understand why that pause created so much quote unquote controversy," Cain said.

Banning cameras from the meeting will likely do little to quiet Cain critics who say his answers were much more than a small pause and further proof he does not have a thorough grasp of foreign policy.

"No one said you need to have cameras at an editorial board meeting," Cain's spokesman Gordon said.

However, cameras at editorial meetings have become standard practice in New Hampshire. When Mitt Romney, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum met with the Union Leader's editorial board earlier this fall, C-SPAN broadcast the interviews. Today, Jon Huntsman participated in a Nashua Telegraph editorial board meeting, which was streamed live on the web.

"I cannot think of a single candidate who has refused an editorial board meeting," said James Pindell, political director at WMUR, a local station in New Hampshire. Pindell has covered three primary cycles in the Granite State.

The Union Leader publisher, Joe McQuaid, who organizes the editorial board meetings was not immediately available for comment.

Yesterday, McQuaid did express surprise at the Cain campaign's decision via Twitter. "Herman Cain doesn't want C-SPAN taping his interview here on Thursday. What's up with that?" he asked.

The Union Leader is the only state wide daily newspaper in New Hampshire. Its editorial board endorsement is the most sought after support by a local news organization ahead of the New Hampshire Republican primary.

To be honest, I don't think it much matters now with Herman Cain, particularly in NH. Romney is going to win NH by a pretty wide margin.

It's why he moved there. He wants to be known as the local guy. Just like he does when he visits MA, Michigan & Utah.

Iowa not so much.

Yup, he's cooked. He'll never survive that interview. Evidently spending an afternoon reading up on foreign policy just doesn't do the trick. Especially on an event that just took place a few months ago.

He was either trying to remember what took place in Libya, OR he was trying to remember the talking points given to him by his aides about Libya and what to say to make damn certain he didn't come out on the same page as President Obama.

He's finished.

I'd tell him no cameras, no meeting, no endorsement. Capiche?

If the guy can't withstand cameras NOW, what on earth would he do if elected?

And they're the ones who complain about the teleprompter. LoL

If only they were smart enough to use teleprompters.

Then why grant the interview? Why not give the time to one of the other candidates? I wouldn't allow it if I were that Union. No cameras, no interview. What are we. North Korea?

Feisty, if you can't stand the heat stay out of the race baiting kitchen. As far as I'm concerned your comment was egregious and unnecessary.

Now if you really want to go there all you have to do is to ask Cain, in the immortal words of Cleavon Little - "Where are de white women at?"

Then ask him to sing a few bars of De Camptown Ladies.

Can anyone please tell me why it is now such a big deal for Citizen Cain to refuse to be filmed and answer publicly on camera? I think this candidate has helped the DEMOCRATS enough already! Every reasoned person, by now, has seen and heard all they need to know about the 'Pizza Man' to make an informed decision. Next at the plate, 'Squeaky-Clean Newt'! OK, alright, I'll just drop the "clean" part if that will make his fans happy!

    Feisty,

If someone said "Obama is dry dark meat" how many posts from the left would be on here claiming racism, and being racist.

I said on a couple of occasions that I don't respond to your post because you never say nothing of importance or ever add any thing to a conversation. Maybe you should get out of your mothers basement more often and smell the clean fresh air.

SFCRET: Sorry that your token Black politician, the GOP's "Great Black Hope" was insulted.

Here's a thought for you; The Right has said this and far, far worse so many times no one can keep track. What do you think calling Obaman a "Kenyan" is? It's a "bird whistle" call to the far Right that "the ni**er can't be a real American" so please, don't get all sanctimonius about it.

Cain is a disgrace not only as a politician but as a representative for his race. He's a "brother from another mother" to the Koch brothers. A shameless Uncle Tom, is what he is. What an embarrassment and your party owns him lock, stock and barrel. Along with Palin, Bachman and the rest of the blindingly stupid, ignorant fools your party insists on thrusting into the limelight. You lie down with dogs, you're gonna wake up with fleas and the GOP is living proof.

Speaking of Kenya... what I want to know is... if Obama was born in 1961 and it says on his birth certificate... fathers origin of birth: Kenya... how can that be?

Kenya didn't become Kenya until 1963. How could his father be from an unnamed country and have it listed as Kenya on Obama's birth certificate?

Speaking of Kenya... what I want to know is... if Obama was born in 1961 and it says on his birth certificate... fathers origin of birth: Kenya... how can that be?

Still clinging to that debunked Orly Taitz birther nonsense Brianb?

Well, let's see, Brianb...from about 1920, the country in question was known as the "Kenya Colony" and before that, it was known as the "East African Protectorate" ...it became the "Independent Republic of Kenya" in '63. The fathers birthplace on the birth certificate simply says "Kenya, East Africa", so one could logically make the conclusion that Kenya means Kenya...nothing more, nothing less.

That should sufficiently answer your puzzlement as to "How could his father be from an unnamed country...". You see, it wasn't "unnamed" at all...it really did have a name.

    So, that's how...question answered...now you know.

This guy was "pro choice", "pro gun control", acknowledged Global Warming and obviously, pro state run medical care when in Massachussetts. I was reading an article that Eric Erikson (sp ?) wrote the other day. He said he was reading a 200 page, single space - mind you - report done by the John McCain camp on Romney for the 2008 presidential election. And Eric said he couldn't find one single subject where Romney had not flip flopped.

Guess what? The last Bloomberg Poll (2 days ago) on the Iowa Caucus says this....

"There’s good news in the poll for Paul, 76, a Texas congressman who has attracted ardent supporters. Among likely caucus-goers who say their minds are made up, Paul leads with 32 percent, followed by Romney at 25 percent and Gingrich, a former House speaker, at 17 percent.

Among Paul supporters who backed him in the 2008 caucuses, 69 percent are still with him now.

Incredible that Cain doesn't have anyone around him who can tell him just how weak this makes him look...Why on earth would he be that blind as to see this won't work and plays into the suspicion of just how unprepared he is. Would we have excused Hilary Clinton of Barack Obama if they had said the same things Cain said because they were tired or hadn't much sleep? I don't think so, and we shouldn't excuse Herman Cain either. The President of the United States works on a possible 24-hour clock and must make critical decisions even when sleepy, tired, in pain, with a bad stomach, or under a host of calamities. What's Cain going to say? "Oops, I was so tired that my so many thoughts were twirling in my mind that I ordered the bombing of Iran!" Get real.

Cain's an obvious and pathetic poseur, a great person in his mind only. His incredible stupidity is matched only by his stunning arrogance. The Koch Brothers chose the wrong anti-Obama Black to be the Tea Party token.

Cain's wanting to control any gaffs he may make in the future.

I say no cameras, no interview! And this man wants to be our president? Most ridiculous thing I've ever heard...He is Done!

Not much need to worry about Herman Cain's campaign banning cameras. The "Cain Thrai" has jumped the track anyway. He couldn't get elected "Dog Catcher"in Elm City, NC if he tried.

The country was known as Kenya, it simply was not yet independent of the British.

It was fun to see the Milwaukee editors have to apologize for being wrong on the federal bargaining thing. Cain should be grinning.

Also today, I watched our current pres take some very long pauses on two questions as he did his usual umms and ahhs. If I go by liberal standards, he must resign immediately. He is way too stupid.

So you think Obama is a great speaker?

I guess you never heard Ronald Reagan, Jack Kennedy, FDR, or even read any of Lincoln's speeches have you.

Any one of them could out speech Obama on their high school graduation. Obama is not a very good speech giver. (even though the media claims he is)
