Cain on Libya: 'I got all this stuff twirling around in my head'

Herman Cain suffered his own memory lapse in response to a question about Libya just days after Rick Perry's campaign tumbled following Perry's debate misstep.

Cain struggled for an answer when asked by the editorial board of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel whether he agreed with President Obama's approach toward Libya.

Cain said:

OK, Libya. [Pause] President Obama supported the uprising, correct? President Obama called for the removal of Khaddhafy. I just wanted to make sure we're talking about the same thing before I say, 'Yes, I agreed' or 'No I didn't agree.' I do not agree with the way he handled it for the following reason -- nope, that's a different one. [pause] I gotta go back and see. I got all this stuff twirling around in my head. Specifically, what are you asking me that I agree or not disagree with Obama?

Cain had previously criticized Obama's handling of the uprising in Libya in a debate this spring. Cain accused the administration of lacking clear objectives in Libya -- or, for that matter, Syria -- and called for the U.S. to develop a foreign policy strategy for each nation on earth.

The moment, though, invites parallels with Perry's moment of forgetfulness during last week's presidential debate. Perry struggled to remember the identity of the third federal agency he would eliminate.

Obama had weathered criticism from some GOP presidential contenders at the time for having authorized U.S. military airstrikes to aid the uprising against Kaddhafy's regime. Kaddhafy was captured and killed last month in Libya.

Cain has previously said that he didn't feel the need to master every detail of foreign policy issues, a sentiment he reiterated in his interview with the Journal-Sentinel, which was conducted on the record for about 30 minutes this morning.

I'm a much more deliberate decision-maker. It's a point that I keep coming back to. Some people want to say, 'Well, as president, you're supposed to know everything.' No you don't. I believe in having all the information, as much of it as I possibly can, rather than making a decision or making a statement about whether I totally agree or didn't agree, when I wasn't privy to the entire situation. There might be some things there that might have caused me to feel differently. So I'm not trying to hedge on the questions, it's just that that's my nature as a businessman -- I need to know the facts, as much as possible, I need to hear all the alternatives...I would want to hear all those views, look at the information, then I make the decision as the commander in chief.

This isn't the first time Cain has risked looking dismissive on foreign policy issues, either. He said, for instance, that he didn't feel the need to known the name of the president of Uzbekistan.

"I’m ready for the ‘gotcha’ questions and they’re already starting to come. And when they ask me who is the president of Ubeki-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan I’m going to say, you know, I don’t know. Do you know?" he asked in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network last month.

Drill--"Gotcha BS?" Have you watched the interview? It's absolutely painful. Cain was clueless. He appear unsure as to what happened in Libya and gave a nonsensical response when asked what he would have done differently. Mr. Cain is absolutely not ready for prime time.

Perhaps this author should ask Obama about the lies that he told the American public about his Libyan policy and have him explain why he should feel that he had to lie to us all.....But, the media will never hold Obama accountable....The media is not accountable....They will support liberalism(or socialism) every time.

Good try JA - it is a waste of time posting on this liberal BS blog. They drank the poison and these people have so much hatred toward conservative thinking that they dont care to realize the reality that is being forced upon them. No one on this site will like what is coming. It has already started - the healthcare law is already causing thousands of layoffs - my wife is the director of finance at one of the top ten rated healthcare agencies in the country - been running a wonderful bus for over 34 years and now they are about to go bankrupt just with the start of implementing of the new laws. While these people sit here and play critics to a man who is a thousand times the worker that our pres is. Did he actually ever have a job? Anyway keep up the fight and maybe someday these people will start to look at the current leader and evaluate him to the same standard that they would hold any conservative view. Today OBAMA spent at a fundraiser then went golfing are you kidding me - wake up people please wake up or you children are done and so are you

ME....I am well aware that the libs cling to their liberal media and that the odds are stacked against actual thinking. It is llike making a sensible statement or stating a real fact makes no impression on the brainwashed. They will just reply with the same old leftist crap. But, if I can make just a few question the BS that the left turns out, then it is worth it....I honestly still cannot believe that Obama had so much socialist activism history over the last fifteen yrs and that the media never questions it or even talks about it. All that we get from the media is charges directed towards those who dont support Obama....

so true - thats because George Soros has billions to keep these stations afloat and his agenda is no secret - it is well documented and he himself would have no problem telling you his goal is to devalue the dollar so much that the world will push a one world currency and a one world government - that cant happen as long as we are strong - obama is just the puppet candidate

In 2000 we "hired" the village idiot and did it again in 2004 because we couldn't stomach the idea of a hypocrit like John Kerry or a pompous windbag like Al Gore. Then in 2008 we "hired" Dumb and Dumber, and we've reaped the whirlwind for that. Now we have Dumb and Dumber on one side and the seven dwarves on the other. Cain is a one-trick pony--other than his ludicrously unworkable "9-9-9" plan, he has nothing to offer. He has the intellect of a strip club bouncer. What we really need is a "No Idiots Allowed" election on either side. Of course, that means we have to start all over--on both sides. And Congress.

GOP are not smart they are fooling all of us with God, and human character and blaspheming everybody that was what the then president Bush did , she basically wore christianity on his shoulder and put us in such a predicament, I dont know they use God's name to run for president, instead of interlect, WHY?? they should just keep their christainity to themselves and have a brain of interlect but for all I know When Bill Clinton had his problems Gingrich was the one who talked about impeachment, and he was doing the same thing how can he even get the Gut to point fingers on someone, now Cain too is an associate pastor in his church and just look talking about conservative party using God's name hahahahahaha - they always talk about Obama, but they have forgotten their own flaws of intelligence wishing Obama's downfall, now the hole that they think they were digging for Obama to fall in, have become their own curse or plague because they don' t have anyone to be their nominee, so they have fallen in the hole themselves, knowing God and wishing some ones downfall, the Lord raise the humble and downs the evil doers, he who wishes someones downfall will never prosper, for the Lord that they say they worship is not mocked they ought to be ashamed and leave Obama's name alone because they are not doing good themselves, they are all over the place like SEE SAW UP AND DOWN play ground hahahahahahaahahahahah very funny to look at it

The reason Cain has lasted this long is because the so-called "right" will use their supposed support for him to say that they aren't racists. They will say: see, we supported a black guy for a bit....

I see a strategy on their part. Only time will tell if these hypocritical a-holes plan works. Look how the strongest 2 candidates they are flirting with now are actually career politicians. What happened to their stance of wanting a Washington outsider? They are testing the waters for who gets the strongest numbers against Obama, and they will use their various flirtations with the other wackos, for example, the black guy, the women, the politicians, and the religious nuts to throw their combined support behind the strongest candidate in the end game.

They have said all along that their only goal is to make Obama a one-term president.

I can't say that I support any of them. It all comes down to the fact that no-one really seems to care that this beautiful and unique gem of a planet that we live on has been forgotten in all their pandering.

They think economic prosperity is more important than life itself. Greed has truly put mankind at the end of his own existence in the relatively near future. They forget that all that we have comes from this planet, and no-matter how it came into existence, it is a slap in the face of who-ever or however it came to be to treat it the way it is being treated now.

This may sound extreme, but I hope to see the day these evil men are erased from this planet and it stops being abused the way it is....

An evil dictator has been removed, the Libyan people are in charge of their own destiny and have the opportunity to establishing a democratic state. All of this was done without the loss of a single American life and relatively cheaply. What's not to like?

Exactly JA and as you may have noticed, there isn't much press on Libya lately. Ya think there may be a little crow to eat for Thanksgiving in the White House?

And OV - Seems the "evil dictator" had mellowed in recent years. There was no mass killings. There was no oppression beyond the other nations in the region. There was no real discontent within the ranks until the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda pushed the "rebels" into a fight for nothing. You think democracy? Think Sharia. You will be more accurate.

Talk--Have you any evidence to back up your fears about the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda? As I recall, the only person pushing the Al Qaeda connection was Khaddafi. In case you haven't noticed, the Arab Spring has been directed against "mellow" dictators. There hadn't been recent mass killing in Egypt or Tunisia, for example. Assad of Syria is one of those "mellow" ones, right? Look, I know the Bush administration cozied up to Khaddafi (and with good reason), but that's not reason enough to mourn his passing. Let's face it: Libya was a foreign policy success for Obama and no amount of fearful whispering will change that.

Old vet. You have only proven that you accept the lies that Obama told the american people. You accept the fact that he did not consult congress before he gave the order to start dropping bombs. You accept the lies that there was no more involvement other than a no fly zone and that it went on for months and months rather than a matter of days. You accept the lies that we are just supporting innocents who want nothing more than democracy. There will be no democracy in Libya and the way is open for radicals to gain ground. .......We have no idea what this will cost us in the future and you have no concern that we have supported the overthrow of some who we treated as our friends in that area...

If Libya makes sense to you, why dont we(tonight) start bombing Cuba and half the countries in S America? Why havnt we bombed S Korea? How about China? There are several countries in Afrika that we could bomb(whisper that because Obama may actually do it.

So, your policy is that if it is cheap to bomb a country that has an evil dictator(for over 40yrs and 80yrs old) that we should do it. And, if the president lies to us about it, all the better.

JA--I ask for evidence and you give me right-wing rhetoric. Your statement that there will be no democracy in Libya is perhaps wishful thinking, but no more. After reading your screed, I suspect you don't have a very good handle on what actually happened in Libya. You have accepted the lies and fantasies of the right-wing blogosphere. Ron Reagan, the rightwing hero, invaded sovereign nations without consulting congress. Was he guilty of breaking the law? I would respond to your third sentence but it doesn't make sense. Here are some facts that you may want to consider: The people of Libya rose against a dictator who had killed Americans. After that dictator threatened to massacre his own people and moved to carry out that threat, NATO, led by France, moved against the dictator. The US provided an initial suppressing of the dictator's AA and command and control capabilities, but after about three days, dropped back to a supporting role as other NATO partners did the bombing. The people of Libya eventually overthrew the dictator. We lost not a single soldier and achieved our objectives. I hope these facts will be of use to you.

Some have suggested that Mr. Cain is not a serious candidate. He clearly is not conversant with the issues and, some have charged, has no campaign organization beyond that supplied by the Koch brothers' Americans for Prosperity. Could it be that Cain continues to campaign only to promote book sales and lecture bookings?

Don BS the only well thought out answers he gives are to planted questions put in place by the puppet masters and well rehearsed prior to the question. You want well thought out and truly felt answers to questions, ask Cain or Newt. They know of what they speak.

Given the state of the Union when he took office the fact we are not in a depression speaks volumes. The GOP is just unfit to run anything and they prove it with the likes of Cain, Bachmann, Paul and Perry.

I don't agree with his polices but Gingrich isn't stupid...the others, well if you put GW Bush on the stage with them, he'd be the smartest one of the bunch.

It was a set up. Did he pass? No. Should he have gone forward with the interview being fatigued? No. How many press conferences/speeches has Obama given that were delayed 30, 45, an hour, up to TWO AND A HALF hours because he wasn't ready?
