The man charged with guiding his party through a presidential primary fight said Monday that the fluctuating horserace will produce a strong nominee.
“I just wouldn’t equate volatility in some of the field to any sort of indication that there isn’t going to be a lot of horsepower in defeating this president," said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown.”
Priebus pointed to the 2008 Republican race as a guide to how a race can change quickly in the final weeks before official primary voting begins.
“Four years ago today," Priebus said, "you had Fred Thompson in second place and Rudy Giuliani in first place, [Mike] Huckabee and [John] McCain way back in the field and, lo and behold, McCain became the nominee. I don’t think this is all that uncommon."
A re-contact of Republicans surveyed in November’s NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found that Texas Gov. Rick Perry and ex-businessman Herman Cain have lost support in the wake of Perry’s debate difficulties and sexual harassment allegations facing Cain.
Despite those developments, Priebus said he believed either man could defeat President Obama as the Republican nominee.
“Both of those candidates," he said, "and our entire field provides a better alternative to the four years of misery that this president has put us on."
Priebus said media coverage of the primary fight is helping Republicans. He also cited past Democratic primaries as inspiration for Republicans.
“I don’t think this primary field is a whole lot different than primary fields and stories that occurred four years ago or in 1992 during the Democratic primary contest or 1988,” Priebus said. “Quite frankly, Hillary [Clinton] and Barack Obama’s epic battle four years ago, I think, just gave the president a tremendous amount of horse power moving through the summer.”

You don't stand a chance with those clowns you have running !
I don't think you are understanding what Reince is saying. I think he is planning on scrapping the entire field and actually running a horse named "Incitatus".
It's a Caligula joke people, look it up!
Seriously though, scrapping the entire field and running a farm animal may be the GOP's best chance.
The GOP is providing fodder for the 2012 campaign. (Fodder - horse food). :)
Phinephancy - While I do see the logic of running a farm animal as opposed to the current Republican field, I do question the choice of a horse.
Given the nature of today's Republican party doesn't a sheep make more sense?
This guy looks like a clown himself. Remember, he is Wisconsin's wonder boy who put Walker in office. Don't think Wisconsin will ever forget. Neither will Michigan or Ohio. That is a hefty amount of electoral votes lost for Republicans in 2012.
nisl, that's baaaaaad. :)
"Reince Priebus'
Is that like 'Chevy Volt"?
"A bag of frozen peas also works well - just make sure you keep them in the bag! ;o)"
-That's right, Feisty, or else one JAS1 will implore you to eat them!
"Horsepower?" Fits right in with "take our country back," If you mean take it back to the horse and buggy days of the 1800s.
More like the "Horse Manure" will be there.
Of course they have horse power, the only problem is that their leading candidates are all horses rear-ends.
Exactly, Devie. That's what I was going to say. LoL
That's the Republican idea of "alternative energy sources."
And there's an endless supply of it. ;-)
Horse-power says Reince...?
Seriously?
The current
clownsclunkers don't have enough 'horse-power' to drive a go-kart around a cheerio!Talk about running on empty! lol
Hee, hee, hee, hoo hoo hoo, haa haa haa, OUCH, just fell off my chair laughing.
I have to give a hat tip to my good friend Independent Redneck - I was paraphrasing one of his good ol' observations! ;o)
I think I need an ice pack for my hip! :)
Reince is the biggest blowhard of them all, the Sat debate once again showed how ignorant, willfully ignorant, his 'candidates' are, listening to them bloviate as to how they will take us to war again, torture our adversaries, is enough to make one ill.
These people are so out of touch with what the majority of voters say about going to war, NO MORE, what part of that don't they understand?
They have neither horsepower nor horse sense.
But, the GOP does have the rear end of the horse! :)
A bag of frozen peas also works well - just make sure you keep them in the bag! ;o)
I do have frozen broccoli
Yeh Red Who knew we were going to have so much competition for the Rookie of the Year on the Cheerio Go Kart Racing circuit this year. Looks like for the conceivable future we are mired in a eight way tie for first place.
We don't even get cash for these "clunkers" Feisty. No way of recycling them for the good of the environment. We just have to treat them like common everyday trash when they finally wear out their welcome.
But, remember, they all have (giggle) horsepower!
Where everyone gets a 'blue ribbon'! lol
Correct Ana - we don't get cash but the powers that be are throwing wheel barrels full @ these jalopies! ;o)
Breaking News: Mr. Ed the famous talking horse has just entered the race for the republican nomination.
He said he felt that it was important that democratic voters be able to look at a gift horse in the mouth for a change.
White flag of surrender here!!! My face now hurts from laughing.

"Breaking News: Mr. Ed the famous talking horse has just entered the race for the republican nomination.
Mr Ed? That horse on the 60's sitcom?? Hell, man- I thought all this time that was Dan Quayle's wife, Marilyn .
Not that I am the blog police DBO, and I do appreciate your humor, I feel all politicians are fair game, but I think we should leave their wives and kids out of it, unless and until they insert themselves into the campaign.
Horsepower, really? I have worked around horses all my life. The "output" is about 80 lbs of manure a day. On second thought, horsepower might be a good analogy! We all know what the Republican Party is full of!

I humbly concede. Point: Forrest.
Thanks DBO I hated to go there but in the 3 years or so I have been reading your posts I know for a fact you are better than that, and that particular post was uncharacteristic of you my friend.
Oh gawd, obviously, the RepubliCLOWNS haven't paid much attention to their debates.
Obama: We'll use GOP debates against them
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/theoval/post/2011/11/obama-well-use-gop-debates-against-them/1
It's not just the debates that will vote these fools off the political landscape. ha ha
snort, snort, giggle, giggle. Stop it. My ribs are hurting from laughing so much.
I"m having visions of those commercials already. Especially the condescending towards females one against Hermie, if he makes it that far. It a done deal. Productions costs are way way down. Obama will go all out positive with his message while allowing the candidates words to be used against them all the way to his second term. Obama 2012.
As Newt recently said "if you quote me you are lying".
I would do a split screen commercial with Romney contradicting Romney, I would call it the "Republican self debates".
Voting for Romney is a bargain, you buy one and you get one free!
I think he is referring to the wrong part of the horse. There is no horse power, just a bunch of horse a$$'s
Couldn't help myself, he made it too easy.
David Gregory, host of Meet The Press, is getting quite a bit of bad press today around the web. It seems he was quite dishonest yesterday on MTP. And this is why the GOP will always have a chance to beat President Obama.
We do not have a liberal media. We do not want a liberal media. We just want an honest media.
What we are finding is that what we have is a dishonest media. Case in point:
Steven Benen: If it's Sunday, It's Meet The GOP Talking Points -
"Meet the Press" host David Gregory spoke with Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz … and the interview was pretty tough to watch …. When attention turned to debt-reduction efforts, Gregory said, simply as a matter of fact, that Republicans on the super-committee "did agree for tax increases that Democrats have not accepted this week," and then tried to change the subject. The host wanted to leave viewers with the impression that GOP officials were making a good-faith offer….
…. What Gregory failed miserably to offer viewers was context and any of the relevant details…. I expect this on Fox News. "Meet the Press" is supposed to have higher standards.
And to top it off, the host inexplicably showed a clip of Obama from July 2008 talking about his desire to lower the deficit if elected. July 2008 – before the crash, before TARP, before the need for the Recovery Act, before Republicans demanded an extension of Bush-era tax breaks that they refused to pay for.
He asked Wasserman Schultz:
"On the debt, how irresponsible is it that this president has allowed America's national debt to increase by 41 percent over his term of office?"
What Gregory failed miserably to offer viewers was context and any of the relevant details. The president inherited a $1.3 trillion deficit, plus a global economic collapse, plus two wars Republicans never even tried to pay for, plus GOP lawmakers who fought to kill every deficit-reduction measure proposed by the White House. The question presupposes that Obama was fiscally "irresponsible," which is ridiculous, and presupposes that Obama's priority should have been the debt, rather than the economy, which is insane.
…. It was one of the worst interviews I've ever seen on "Meet the Press."

WHERE IS THE JOURNALISM? The journalism that we grew up with?
Which is why I've fondly referred to 'David as Gotcha Gregory for years!
Gregory's a right wing buffoon who likes to 'fox trot' with his good buddy Karl Rove! ;o)
Tim Russert is spinning in his grave! ;o(
Give David one more year, then I bet they tap Chuck Todd for MTP.
They would be better off with Luke Russert.
Here's an oldie but goodie;
Gotcha Gregory has GOT to go...
Give Larry O' his own show... like MTP & not his current time slot!
I think NBC would think Luke is too young and green. That's why they didn't pick Chuck Todd to begin with.
Pat, I saw that interview. It was so bad I switched to Face the Nation. The difference in the moderators is credibility(Schiefer) versus sensationalism (Gregory). Gregory needs to move to Fox news were sensationalism is preferred over credibility and facts. Sorry NBC, Meet the Press sucks.
Forgot to mention to NBC. There is a concrete reason Face the Nation is number one. Time to owe up to Gregories' credibility problem.
I gave up on MTP a while back. Watch Sportscenter now on Sunday morning.
I also gave up on 'gotcha gregory' a long time ago.
His 'hatchet' hands absolutely turned me off along with the channel!
At least now, Up With Chris is an alternative!
I as well watch SportsCenter on Sunday mornings. For some reason, these hosts on most of the shows never challenge the GOP. They are in awe of the GOP male bully mentality that really rose to power during the GWB years. And now they like it in Christie. And that's all he is really, a loud mouthed bully.
Does Christie have some sort of health issue? If not, he ought to take better care of himself and quit bullying the rest of us.
The worse host ever for MTP. And please do not replace him with Chuck Todd - he is just like David. I, too would like Larry O for MTP. I miss Tim.
Lawrence O'Donnell is perfect for Meet The Press.
Someone over @ The Obama Diary wrote about someone from Politico who was just on Andrea Mitchell's program and said President Obama will not get re-elected. Okay. Evidently Andrea said President Obama can't connect with people. Is she for real or what?
Sorry Andrea. People in this country like President Obama. They do not however like Romney or Cain or Newt or Bachmann. Get your facts right.
Who in the GOP connects with "real" people?
This journalist from Politico just attended something in honor of Reagan. Ronald Reagan? Didn't he lay off/fire a bunch of "real" people?
Does Romney connect with real people? Is he supposed to beat President Obama? The same Romney who was for "real people" losing their auto industry jobs? The same Romney who was against "real people" keeping their homes? The same Romney who didn't think to send his own kids to war, yet was perfectly fine with us sending ours?
He connects with real people?
Boy oh boy. That's today's media for you.
I love Laurence O., however he is too partisan for MTP. And he is sometimes caught flat footed because he hasn't done his research. His interview with Abramoff evidenced that. He kept showing surprise that Democrats were on the take also according to the book. Kept going back to Republicans during the interview. I was embarrassed for him.
Right.....
David Gregory is sooooooo right wing.
The questions are obvious. The left doesn't like the answers.
The four years of "misery" we have been experiencing came as a direct consequence of what happened on President Bush's watch: tax cuts, two unfunded wars, unfunded Medicare Part D...and the economic meltdown in 2008. How do the current candidates for the GOP nomination explain that, how would they learn from that, how will they re-brand the party? Mr. Priebus underestimates the extent to which voters were really, really angry at what President Bush, Vice President Cheney et al did in the name of the American people. If GOP candidates are still going to campaign on privatizing social security, taking away access to health care and engaging us in even more wars, they do so at their own peril.
At least the GOP will have horse (snort, giggle) power.
Can the Supreme Court take up the investigation of the market value of the health care cost in terms of (1) locally, (2) regionally, (3) globally, and (4) GDP and cost of living?
Would the Supreme Court take seriously evaluate what the reasons of the lack of affordable health care are?
Would the Supreme Court take up another case of any conspiracy regarding to the lobbyists and lawmakers involvements of indugling health care cost?
I must take the time to pause and say thank you to the GOP for providing me so much amusement this afternoon. Horsepower (snort, giggle). That will keep me going the rest of the day.
Enjoy yourself now. The last laugh will be in Nov 2012, and it is Republicans that will be smiling.
Booby, dear, you are part of the horse. I will let you guess which part. I am having to much fun here to let you spoil it for me.
Hillary Clinton's and Barack Obama's "epic battle" was a trial by fire to see if an African American could be elected to the Presidency. Obama prevailed over every obstacle that arose, proving he had the toughness and the smarts for the general. (Not to mention, the qualities needed to be President.) I'll never forgot Hillary put Obama's name up for the nomination at the convention; she was so proud to nominate the first African American general election Presidential candidate, it was a powerful moment.
The Republican primary this year is hardly an epic battle, more like a pathetic display of unelectable losers competing for the "lesser of nine evils" vote.
Actually is was a battle to see if an African American or woman could be president. Could you see Herman Cain and Michelle Bachmann in such a race? Oh goodness, that picture started my giggles again.
The Republican primary this year is hardly an epic battle, more like a pathetic display of unelectable losers competing for the "lesser of nine evils" vote.
Yeah, you pretty much nailed it. And why is that? I'll tell you why. It is because in 2008 Obama and Hillary had to prove themselves to a broad cross section of the American public whereas today's Republican candidates need to prove themselves only to Fox News watchers and those that listen to hate radio.
Amy---I think you are right about the differences between the 2008 primaries and what is going on.
However, I don't think we can be complacent about the President's chances of re-election--there is a lot of Super PAC money they will raise and a lot of anti-Obama sentiment to be harnessed (by their horse-power).
Democrats should take nothing for granted, we need to guard against that, we need to continue to register our voters and each democrat should make a pledge to themselves to bring ten people with them to the polls next November, we need to take the Oval office, and we need to take as many house and senate seats as possible, please don't let your guard down, just because of the weak field of republican presidential candidates. Find out if there have been in changes it the registration process or requirements to vote in your district, and then make sure they are fulfilled, if they want a picture ID and a long form birth certificate make sure that is what your friends and family are prepared to bring, if you want this to happen then make sure you put forth the effort to make it happen.
You are right, Forrest, but for one sweet shining minute, I would like to enjoy the absurdity of our friends on the right. I must pause and think about the parts of the horse. I shall be serious anon.
I agree they must be equating the amount of horse droppings as an indication of horsepower. They got themselves a big steaming pile of horsepower!
Why do republican presidential candidates have one more brain cell than a horse?
So they do not poop in the street during the parade!
Hello floor, here I come again. LMAO!!!!! Going to have to put some pillows down by my chair!
What else would ol' Rancid say!!? Horsepower? Jackass power is more like it!
New CNN national poll:
Romney 51
Obama 47
Is this one funny, too?
The economy is bad Bob, people are looking for a bargain, and with Romney when you buy one you get one free!
Keep dreaming Bob, Romney can't carry the south, we both know it, been here all my life, Morman's are on the same level as Muslums to Bubba, and they will vote for neither, and of course bubb'a wife and mistress vote how he tells them to! haha, but seriousley, it will be a problem for Romney. Take it to the bank Bob, I know this cause I was born and raised in Bubbaland.
Bob, did you notice that "All Respondents" had it at 48% Obama, 48% Romney?
I would be very concerned if I were a Romney supporter. The fact that Romney's opponents rarely bring up his flip flops on many core issues should be extremely concerning. For example, Romney was for gun control, but now that he wants your vote, he says he's against it. The fact that there are many clips of Romney saying this, but his Republican opponents are not using it should scare the daylights out of people.
This opens the door for a Tea Party Republican to run as a 3rd party. All they have to do is show these clips of Romney's flip flops and Romney wouldn't even receive as many votes as the Tea Party candidate.
Not to mention the unfortunate timing of running Mr. Wall Street as a candidate when OWS protests are sweeping the nation. Poor Romney he seems destined to always be a republican bridesmaid but never the bride, at least this year he will catch that bouquet.
Priebus said “Both of those candidates and our entire field provides a better alternative to the four years of misery that this president has put us on."
Once again, Republicans try to deny they had the Presidency when the economy crashed in 2008.
President Obama hasn't even been President 3 years.
When is Priebus going to stop flip flopping on items that occurred in 2008? One minute, Priebus talks about something great that President Bush did in 2008. The next minute, Priebus talks about President Obama and things he has done in his 4 years as President.
A third party candidate is starting to look pretty good right now, and to he!! with splitting the vote.
It really would not make much difference thetotas, except for commanding the military, the president can only do what Congress is willing to legislate, Any president can only accomplish what the Congress will pass, he can do no more and no less than they are willing to do.
Ah, it is time to go the grocery. I must go rev up the GOP, er, horses in my engine. Having fish tonight with a nice white wine. Think it will be a pinot grigio. With steamed broccoli. Check in with you all later.
Will you pick me up a gallon of milk? lol
What goes clipity clop, clipity clop, bang, bang bang, clipity clop, clipity clop.
Republican candidates trying to do a drive by shooting of the presidents policies.
At this point I would give Donald Duck odds as a write-in against any of the current primary circus
It's like a race to the bottom (and into another war none the less)
Has anyone notice the prices at the grocery store? Its a real kicker.
Here is another kicker, if the truth be known, for many of the products that we buy the packaging costs the producer more than the actual product inside that package.
Reince Preibus - Can you take out vowels?
RNC PR BS!
Well GOP --- you better find some new horses quickly because the bunch of nags you have so far won't even make it around the track.
Only the RNC would describe those toy stick ponies as having real horsepower. Giddyup repubs and ride off into the sunset.
The olde grey mare she ain't what she used to...many long years ago...Do they really believe they have a horse in the race?? possibly a Tojan horse...all I see are one trick ponies!
Seriously though, I am more concerned about the House & Senate seats. They are throwing tons of cash at state level races...
"Horse Power" ?!?! more like Flogging a dead horse.
I totally agree that we need to flush the whole group and start over. Not much hope for improvement until the weeds get cut.
