VIDEO: Republican Mich. governor expresses support for auto bailout

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder talks to NBC's Chuck Todd about the auto bailouts, polarization in politics, and Mitt Romney, Michigan's favorite son.

In an interview with NBC's Chuck Todd, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder expressed support for the Obama administration's auto bailout, because it saved an industry, he said. He added, though, that he is against bailouts generally and especially for single companies.

Snyder has not endorsed a presidential candidate, but said Mitt Romney, who was born in Michigan, is considered a favorite son.

Video edited by NBC's Matt Loffman.

Now here's something you don't see everyday...a Republican admitting that the "handouts" actually work. But, of course, Snyder is "he is against bailouts generally and especially for single companies."

...you can't make this crap up if you tried...

Let's see, a republican approves of a bailout as long as it saves his states collective a$$, but the rest of the country can kiss it. That sounds like a republican agenda in general doesn"t it?

As a child on road trips we played all the usual games to avoid boredom and getting slapped by my parents. I have a new one my grandkids play because they are often forced to watch a lot of news when I am around. They count how many times anyone speaking uses I and how often they use we then they must guess who is the Republican and who is the Democrat. They are 3 and 6 and are actually seldom wrong.

You people continue to talk about things you know nothing about.

Rick Snyder has already done incredible things in Michigan in his first year after 8 years of the Granholm catastophre.

A balanced budget was delivered ahead of schedule, something Democrats know little about.

The so-called Draconian cuts to education have resulted in zero effects to the Michigan public schools. Those "Draconian cuts" by the way were $300 per student out of a $10,000+ per student budget.

Rick Snyder is saving Michigan.

How are things working out in Illinois Feisty?

I think that it is a valid distinction to discuss helping an entire industry to survive which means not only jobs for a single company or location, but across the whole of the country as opposed to a specific bailout of a specific corporate entity. it would be similar to helps to the steel industry which would cover mining and factories in several states that support that industry.

Snyder is one of the new breed of "CEO Governors" that came in the last batch of elections.

He is not beholden to the Koch brothers. He has more money than the Koch brothers.

He was the CEO of Gateway computers. He has taken positions outside modern mainstream republicanism. Positions that are, you know,...... sane.

He ran for Governor under the mantra of "One Tough Nerd". Prevailing judgement is that he is going to be a "One-term Nerd" though.

His wealth means that, unlike the rest of the GOP, he can leave his Koch knee pads at home. Don't need em'. He doesn't particularly need the Tea Party either.

He started proposing raising taxes almost as soon as he got elected. Most Michigan republicans raise taxes right out in the open, like Engler did. None of these stealth tax increases.

Just to add one thing....he gave tax breaks to his coporate friends, by creating a new tax on seniors to pay for it. It's been a BOOM for new businesses here.....err, wait...no, it actually hasn't. Oh well, it was well intentioned, I'm sure.

And, although no one asked....Bob Seger gave him a shoutout at his concert last week at EMU. The entire arena of people boo'd him loudly. He lost his 'mandatory new bridge' attempt and doesn't have the cooperatiion even with state republicans. And he's also in the process of going backward, on his elimination of movie tax credits. He's in, over his head here.

Far Left loser Dem Jennifer Granholm destroyed the economy of Michigan.

The tax increases and statist subsidies for favored crony capitalists failed miserably.

Michigan is definitely in play in 2012, especially if Romney is the GOP nominee.

Michigan can no longer even afford to pay attention. What is trying to be salvaged in that state is a downward spiral that started 30 years ago, resulted in probably more than half the population of the state relocating to other states, which left a big hole in tax revenues, because fewer people, means fewer tax dollars. Empty properties do not create tax revenue, and Detroit in particular has been put in the position of bulldozing entire neighborhoods of vacant buildings, because it is cheaper to demolish them than to police them and keep them clean and safe.

Fayeanne...I think this is a first - someone actually enthusiastic about Romney. There are a lot ready to "settle" for him. Polls show that most of his supporters are with him only because they believe he has the best chance to beat the President and will hold their nose while voting for him

And how many of you will "hold your nose" and vote for Obama again, just because you believe that the sky will fall in, if you voted outside the Democratic party? How many will vote for the present administration, just because they are getting all the free bennies?

Mitt Romney Debates Mitt Romney on the Auto Industry bailout.......

'I'm going to take burdens off the back of the auto industry.' [1]

'Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check.' [2]

                  And then....

'I'm a strong believer in stating your position and not wavering.' [1]

                  'I changed my position.' [2]

Most Michigan voters want their next president to remind them of the guy they worked with, not the guy who laid them off.

In many cases, the guy they worked with had trouble making ends meet, didn't have a checking account, much less a budget, and if the news footage is correct, very possibly have some serious alcohol related issues, as UAW workers have been videotaped eating lunch outdoors on the grounds of the factory with the alcohol chaser in brown paper bags. In many cases, the guy next to you on the assembly line might or might not show up to work (the union will protect him if he only misses one or two days per week)...and the guy next to him at work won't think for himself about whether or not he is being treated fairly...he waits for a union steward to tell him. Yeah, we really want that for President or Governor, or even head dog catcher.

Does that include the President who has laid off millions with his failed economic policies? So under that theory you would think Obama is in big trouble because he certainly has laid off more people than Romney in all of our lifetimes.

                      Kirk,

Funny I didn't think that President Obama was running a corporation... all those people that were laid off, were laid off from a business that they worked for... most of them were laid off because of a lack of demand for the products they made, that lack of demand caused by the recession that started before President Obama was even elected...

But why would facts, common sense or reality matter to you when GOP crazed ideology is all that you are interested in...

                        #12.1 - Thu Nov 10, 2011 4:47 PM EST

No I was being flippant on purpose because of the same lack of critical thinking making those judgements regarding Romney. You can dislike him and not vote for him because you think some political position is not something you like but someone making ignorant conclusions about his business experience is no different. Its highly likely that the companies Bain bought were distressed and Romney should be credited for saving jobs rather than criticized for laying off workers in which if they didnt everyone would have lost their jobs. Sort of like the state and local government bailouts by Obama created jobs by counting the ones he saved from the budget ax.

As for crazy GOP ideology it always makes me laugh when I think that good old fashioned values like self reliance and personal accountability have become considered crazed. That financial values like deficit spending way beyond our means and making sure there is equality of outcomes regardless of the personal choices one makes in life as become common sense. Hopefully, your common sense will not win the day.

I am sure placating nutjobs who just want to install fiscal sanity to government so we dont destroy the standard of living for our kids and grandkids is tough. People who rack of spending deficits greater than all the presidents combined in this country, people who think success should be punished rather than rewarded and no longer feel their should be consequences for personal choice anymore. Self reliance and personal accountability now is considered being a nutjob. I do feel sorry for him. Look what those nut jobs have done to the state of Illinois and of course California and NY too. These are just guinea pig states for what those federal nutjobs want to do to the federal government--oh wait a second those were democrats.

BobbyG--what havent they offered? Everything from tort reform in the old congress when the democrats controlled the house to bill after bill trying to reduce the dramatic growth in spending. Dont you think balancing your budget is fiscally sane? What education reform so we can eliminate the education gap in this country causing the income inequality that is constantly rejected by democrats. What about sealing our borders to prevent more illegal immigration driving down the labor wages for low skilled workers? What about rejected obamacare which is a job killer and will widen the deficit even more as the real unintended or maybe intended consequences become known? What about eliminating the draconian EPA standards killing jobs and moving plants overseas? What about trying to lift the drilling ban in the gulf that caused us to lose 30,000 jobs overseas?

When it comes to fiscal sanity do you really think your going to find it with the democrats? Certainly dont have a great history or track record.

The only plan that Republicans have offered is the same old "trickle down" cut the taxes on the rich and make the poor pay more plans they have offered in the past...

The very same ones that have gotten us into this recession in the first place...

p.s. drilling moratoriums and EPA standards aren't killing jobs in America - GREED is killing jobs in America, for all your indigination, I'm willing to bet that you enjoy fresh air to breathe and clean water to drink...
