What Virginia Republicans appear to have accomplished

While there's uncertainty over whether Virginia Republicans captured control of the state Senate -- due to a stronger-than-expected Democratic showing -- a top aide to Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) emails First Read this list of what Republicans accomplished last night (assuming they hold on to the Senate race they're currently leading by 86 votes):

· Republicans picked up 8 seats in the House of Delegates
· Republicans now have 68 seats in the House, the most in history. This counts Lacey Putney, Independents, who caucuses with the Republicans
· Republicans won 13 of 14 open seats in the House
· Republicans defeated 3 incumbents in the House
· Republicans have won a working majority in the Senate
· Republicans gained two seats to make it 20-20 with Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling holding the decisive tie-breaking vote
· Republicans won 3 of 5 open seats in the Senate
· Republicans defeated 2 incumbents in the Senate

Also:

· Last night was historic in Virginia
· Given the current election results, the GOP will control Virginia’s Executive Mansion, State Senate and House of Delegates for only the second time since Reconstruction ended 141 years ago

Bob this article is for you. Happy now buddy....you were 95% correct in your assessment of the politics in Virginia.

Beautiful state might I add. Hope to re-visit this summer as long as they still allow democrats in. ; )

backhouse...,.....you obviously are clueless..........and not from Virginia

Virginia is rated #1 for business and job growth. Always a top 5....doesn't matter if the DNC or GOP is in control. Virginia is doing much better than most states......especially DNC controlled states.

Virginia is about witnessing the eclipse of modernization by these crude goons. Like we've seen everywhere the right wing nuts hold sway, sheepishly and myopically, they'll roll back the hand of time and call it, taking back our country..........to the stone age?

Don't carry it all - you don't have to, you can do like my family does - we absolutely refuse to spend any vacation money in a repugnant state - including ours. Ky is pretty nice, so is NC (still get the beaches), Cali is beautiful, so is Oregon and Washington State. Just went to Maryland, could do that again for sure - still lots of options and Virginia, Mississippi, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas will not be on our spending money list for awhile. hang in there fella, you still got a lot of great choices, and remember, nothing lasts forever - not even the stupidity of the voting public who somehow think the upper 1%ers give a darned about them.

Cancelled a trip to Arizona due to the political climate there, as well as South Dakota. Not going to spend money in regressive states.

Union Baby & New Day---I think that is wonderful that you spend your vacation money in "blue" states. I will try to do the same in the future, although with family in Maine that will be a challenge.

Of course VA does well.... have you been reading the articles that the Fed is the only one adding jobs?... and they are not cheap jobs.... wait till the failure of the supercommittee... and then see what happens in VA when the Fed's start cutting.... stand back!

Union Baby -- I never thought about that... Lately, my dear elderly neighbor, a WWII vet, has been regaling me with stories, history and photos of his family whose roots go back to at least to the 1800's in Virginia. He had me nostalgic for visiting with a new perspective. ; )

I've spent a lot of time in Cali, Washington State and NC. All my favorites. We flew out to Washington State and spent 2 weeks exploring from Neah Bay to Seattle, something I highly recommend to all. This past summer I ran out of time as I traveled throughout the West and had to bypass Oregon but it's still on my list. Will continue travel to Cali as often as I can. Beautiful state with quite possibly the most perfect weather of all the states.

As I have family all over I do not think I can stick to "blue" states and hope the red ones will continue to make everyone feel welcome as I love to travel. But I will be more attuned to the nuances of politics. Hopefully it doesn't present itself as unwelcoming. This gal likes people and I hope they will respond in kind, lol.

Thanks for the great chat Union Baby. Love the name!

I'm not sure that Republicans should be pleased. Seems to me that the Democratic showing is going to be bigger the next time. To struggle to get what Republicans got in Virginia simply means.....nothing.

What we CAN be sure of is what the Republicans have shown us in other states. They will overreach, everything to them is a MANDATE! WE MUST ACT NOW BECAUSE THE VOTERS HAVE TOLD US WE MUST.

And then they find out they are wrong. Like in Ohio and Wisconsin.

    It sure does Backhouse.

For the longest time, I considered myself a moderate. I was a Republican. They were fiscally conservative, socially "live and let live" and I was comfortable in the party.

And then came Reagan. The party left me, and I found out, much to my surprise, that I was considered a liberal but those same people that I used to serve on committees with.

And they were right. Proud Llberal.

Dennis, we don't have to go back to the Dark Ages, we can simply go back to 2008 and Vote for a different President. That would be a start.

    Interesting point Dennis.

So we here in Cali, and those in NY and Ill are like Ancient Greece.

Oh, no, not ancient Greece, cause they paid their bills and didn't have welfare.

Maybe just a trip to Europe, eh Dennis. A little Italy, Greece, Spain and Ireland?

    Spanky,

Of course they paid their bills because the Dictators took however much they wanted and if you didn’t pay they took your land and business ... sometimes your life.

We are doomed Spanky. In CA the controlling Dem Party seems to have a large outgo without the necessary inflow to sustain itself. And I understand the state pension funds are also underfunded with the taxpayers on the hook for the difference. Similar happening is NY and other states that are also controlled by liberal politics, politicians and special interest groups.

A pattern here? Now factor in the liberal spending programs of those EU communities. A global record of failure by overspending.

Ummmm, who are the dictators in Greece, Italy and other failing nations that fellow is talking about? They have a democracy, however liberal, don't they Spanky?

Maine got a Teapublican Governor and a Republican legislature for the first time in decades last year, and now the people of Maine have overwhelmingly reversed the new legislature's law banning same day voter registration.

I'm from Virginia and the GOP is taking all the credit for jobs when it was a Democrat who put all the initiatives in place before he left. They had the governor asking what he did that made VA so successful and he couldn't even answer the questions because he didn't know. SMH!!!

The last Dem Governor, Tim Kaine spent most of his term shilling for Obama, rather than being Governor.

Like all Democrats, he spent like a drunken sailor and left a huge deficit, which McDonnell fixed.

Now Tom Kaine is running for US Senate; his Obama connections will be an albatross around his neck. Unless many Senate Dems in 2012, he cant run away from the toxic Obama.

No mention of the most popular GOP Governor in the nation, Bob McDonnell? This is a tremendous victory for him personally.

To the consternation of the liberal Washington Post, McDonnell's approval ratings are sky high. McDonnell has helped Virginia's economy to thrive.

McDonnell is articulate , positive, a conservative focused on economic issues. Military background, great family.

No offense , Marco Rubio, but you have some real competition for VP selection.

End Obama care, 35% of the people are skipping out on their medical bills. Who today would even want to buy health insurance anyway, they got to treat you. We need to stop kicking the can. USA USA USA GOP GOP GOP america!
