Subscribe to RSSThe outcomes Tuesday in balloting from Maine to Mississippi included enough wins for Democrats, abortion rights advocates, and labor unions to give a bit of a lift to President Obama and his allies as they look toward the 2012 elections, 12 months from tonight.
In Ohio, voters overwhelmingly rejected the law enacted last spring by Gov. John Kasich and the Republican-controlled legislature that limited the ability of public employee unions to collectively bargain.
The law also would have required performance-based pay for most public employees and required them to pay 15 percent of the cost of their health care benefits.
Democratic National Committee Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz cheered the outcome in Ohio calling the law “a blatantly partisan attempt to lay the blame for our economy on middle-class Americans, while letting the wealthiest and special interests off the hook and not asking them to pay their fair share. Voters in Ohio know that targeting public employees for political reasons will do nothing to create jobs or boost Ohio’s economy.”
Yet at the same time that Ohio voters were boosting labor unions, they also delivered at least a symbolic rebuff to Obama’s health care reform law by overwhelmingly approving a ballot measure saying that no federal, state, or local law or rule could compel any person or employer to participate in a health care system. The practical effect of that Ohio measure hinges on the outcome of legal challenges in federal courts to Obama’s health care law.
In Mississippi, abortion rights advocates scored a somewhat surprising victory as voters defeated Initiative 26, a proposed amendment to the state’s constitution that would have defined the word “person” to include every human being “from the moment of fertilization, cloning, or the functional equivalent thereof.”
More than 55 percent of voters were voted “no” on the ballot measure, The Associated Press reported, falling far short of the threshold needed for it to be enacted.
A statement from Planned Parenthood cheered the victory, saying “Mississippi voters rejected the so-called ‘personhood’ amendment because they understood it is government gone too far, and would have allowed government to have control over personal decisions that should be left up to a woman, her family, her doctor and her faith….”
Both the Republican and Democratic candidates for governor had backed the measure.
Proponents of Initiative 26 said its passage would be a historic triumph for anti-abortion forces, but Republican Gov. Haley Barbour indicated he had misgivings about its effect on in vitro fertilization and ectopic pregnancies, even as he said he had voted for it.
Veteran conservative lawyer and anti-abortion activist James Bopp had criticized the ballot measure, saying it might open the way to a new Supreme Court ruling strengthening abortion rights.
Meanwhile, Mississippi voters also gave overwhelming approval to a ballot initiative that will create a photo identification requirement for voters. According to the National Council of State Legislatures, Mississippi will now be the 31st state with a voter ID requirement and the eighth with a strict photo ID requirement.
In Arizona, Republican state Sen. Russell Pearce, architect of the tough immigration law cracking down on illegal immigrantst that thrust the issue into the national political debate, was ousted from office in a recall election. The moderate Republican who defeated him had made immigration a constant theme, saying Pearce's hard-line policies harmed Arizona's image.
In another victory for Democrats, Maine voters were headed toward a rejection of an attempt by the Republican-controlled state legislature to put an end to Election Day voter registration in the state.
Maine has had Election Day voter registration since 1973.
In two governors’ races, the parties each picked up a win:
In Kentucky, Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear, as expected, won a second term, defeating Republican state Senate President David Williams.
In Mississippi, also very much as expected, Republican Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant defeated underfunded Democrat Johnny DuPree, the mayor of Hattiesburg and the state’s first African-American gubernatorial nominee.
Barbour could not run due to Mississippi’s term limit.
With Bryant’s victory, Republicans have now won five of the last six gubernatorial elections in Mississippi. No Democrat has carried the Magnolia State in a presidential election since Jimmy Carter in 1976.
In Virginia Republicans appeared headed toward a major victory -- gaining control of the state Senate. As Election Day started, the Democrats controlled the 40-member Senate with 22 members.
Democrat Roscoe Reynolds lost his bid for a fourth term to freshman GOP Sen. Bill Stanley in the state Senate's marquee race, bringing the GOP to within one seat of a 20-20 split.
In the deciding race, Democratic Sen. Edd Houck trailed Republican Bryce Reeves by 86 votes out of nearly 45,000 cast with all precincts reporting in a race too close to call, according to The Associated Press. The narrow margin is likely subject to a recount.
An evenly divided Senate gives Republicans an upper hand, since Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling would have the power to break a 20-20 tie, but will likely yield equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans on Senate committees, the AP reported.
Political strategists were carefully watching the Virginia elections to see glimmers of insight into how Obama and Democratic Senate candidate Tim Kaine might fare in 2012.

Ohio Voters are ignorant. They voted against SB5 to allow government workers to continue soaking us for outrageous pensions, accumulated sick, very generous amount of sick at days that, and vacation days. And a very generous health plan that follows them when they are retired.
At the same time the voters of Ohio overwhelmingly voted down all new school levies. New police and fire levies will sure be on the way, which will be voted down also.
What did these voters think, where does the money come from?
The only message Ohio voters sent was that they are indeed foolish.

I don't have a problem with Unions, when unions are doing what they're supposed to do: Protecting valuable employees from abuse dealt down the ladder. When John Q. Shareholder, Esquire has a bad day and takes it out on Larry J. Manager, who takes it out on Bill. D. Middlemanager, who vents it all over Andy P. Foreman who takes it out on some poor schmuck punching a clock - then yes, absolutely, the Union should step in and put these people back in their places.
Or here's a more personal example: My mate was a welder at a Union shop. When she became ill, she went to the doctor, the doctor said surgery will be required, at least 6-8 weeks off work.
Her company said "That's fine, that will give you plenty of time to find another job."
The Union said "No, that's bull. You don't treat employees like that, and if you try, we'll strike, you'll miss your deadlines, and John Q. Shareholder, Esquire will have to explain to his 3 month old why he can't buy him a new Ferrari for his birthday."
The company relented. And that's what Unions are SUPPOSED to do.

The people of Mississippi are surprising! They had the common sense to reject the fact that a life begins at the moment of conception (and who knows exactly when that is?) and along with it a realization that abortions are performed, in the vast majority of cases, to prevent the birth of an unwanted child. Some among us believe that forcing a birth will take an unwanted pregnancy and turn it into a wonnderful experience and create a loving mother and child. Those same people believe the moon landing was faked and the world is flat. Don't we have too many unwanted and abused children NOW? Are we really in short supply of suffering children? If the folks that DO believe this miracle will happen will simply sign up to adopt these unwanted pregnancies the issue is solved sensibly and simply. So start signing up, pro-lifers!

Agreed....It really is common sense. There is a county in Texas...forgive me but I heard it on CSPAN...that voted against all tax increases or revenue adders and now the county is charging parents $50 a month per student a month to ride the school buses because they don't have the revenues to keep them on the road. The voters are now mad and parents/students are severely inconvenienced....but the Tea Party wants cuts....and thats what they got.

Issue Three in Ohio was a slam against Obama Care, Ole Miss got a Republican Gov. THe only thing Ohio got was the Union dolts voting against their own jobs because they WILL lose jobs because the local governments will not be able to afford the benefits payable. They just don't get it. But they will get it in the end (if you know what I mean).

Obama is a One and Done President and from what I can tell, he may even make history as a President worse than Jimmy Carter and that is no easy task. These are perilous times. Mrs. Hillary Clinton, our Secretary of State, has given Iran the go-ahead to have nuclear weapons, an unqualified betrayal of the nation. Now, we face a devastating loss of freedom at home in health care. It will be joined by controls on our lives to "protect us" from global warming, itself largely a fraud, if believed to be caused by man. She has also signed on to a Small Firearms Treaty at the U.N. This is a back door gun control move. This is approved by the Senate and a 2nd Amendment majority doesn't exist in the Senate now. It will supersede all U.S. Law and the 2nd Amendment. All citizen possession will be eliminated through confiscation. Just Like Great Britain and Australia .
Mr. Obama knows Americans are getting wise and will stop him if he delays at all in taking away our freedoms. There is his urgency and our opportunity. Once freedom is lost, America is lost. Wake up, beloved America .

It used very american to work hard, follow the law, and strive to be as successful as you could. Now you should be privilige to all that America has to offer -even if you sit on your butt and complain for a living. While ther are greedy people on all sides- the 1% pays alot of paychecks and taxes for many who don't deserve it (like drug addicts and losers who self inflict their wounds and want top of the line health care).
I understand there may be field trips offered to Greece and Italy...It seems government debt really isn't a big deal after all. No need to address the issue, just ignore it, like that suspicous lump or mole...it's probably nothing.

I agree with some of it, but Unions have no place in a public landscape. How can you barter with a tax payer? Private business go ahead.. but unions in government? Thats extorsion, corruption, etc.. waiting to be played out.. they have already proven they are corrupt and costly to keep as union members. No government shoudl be Union, has no place in anything really. Here in Jersey 37% of the local public office jobs pay out better than $100,000 a year.. and we all wonder why we are broke.... Same with Local fire and police.. working 20 and raking in over 6 figures and getting ridiclous health benefits.. all killing the middle class tax payers. I dont know of one state cop that isnt making over $100,000 G and I know tons of them... how can afford that? Look at the Union electrician.. its like $32 an hour just to step on the job and thats the low end.. Well, Ohio showed how stupid it's citizens really are. The have one of the highest unemployment rates and they voted the same crap back in. Nothing like brainless idiots doing exactly what their union tells them. The union just doesn't want them to know that while it's taking their dues and running up costs, it's gonna force the members right out of work. Look at all the companies and jobs that have been run out of the country due to union greed. Just wanted to comment on all the folks that seem to think that somehow the higher wages negotiated by unions is what has caused this economic downturn. Those jobs didn't go overseas because of high wages, they left so that CEO could collect higher pay because their company's bottom line improved, hence the price of stock went up. That model was always unsustainable, eventually you would need to fire everyone to keep the stock price going up.
So here we are at a crossroads, do we keep screwing the workers for the benefit of the few? The majority of Americans are hard working, nothing wrong with demanding a fair salary.
