Ohio voters reject curb on labor unions

In a rebuff to Republican Gov. John Kasich, Ohio voters have decided to reject curbs on public employees.

The Associated Press projected that voters would reject S.B. 5, the law enacted last spring by Kasich and the Republican-controlled legislature that limited the ability of public employee unions to collectively bargain.

With nearly a third percent of precincts reporting, more than 60 percent of voters were rejecting the law.

The law also would have required performance-based pay for most public employees, limited the accrual of vacation time, and required public employees to pay 15 percent of the cost of their health care benefits. While the health care cost sharing was popular in polling, the curb on collective bargaining by public-sector workers was not.

“The repeal of SB5 is a monumental victory for working families not only in Ohio , but all across the country,” said Michael Sargeant, executive director of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee.

The victory for organized labor is an encouraging sign for Democrats as they prepare to battle for Ohio’s 18 electoral votes in the 2012 presidential election. President Obama carried Ohio with 51 percent of the vote in 2008.

the america you love is dying under BOTH parties. wake up, nothing will change, more spending of my hard earned $$ from both parties. i have to pay a % on health care its only fair that public employees do too, they are using MY $$ to retire on and get sick on and to get 6weeks off and 10 sick days, thats just ludicus. i work hard, pay taxes, pay % of my heatlh insurance, only get 3 sick days a year and max out at 4 weeks vacation and only get 6 holidays a year NOT 15.

TO: b.murphy who wrote:

Not true, just the opposite. What makes me so happy today is that people are waking up and have decided to STOP voting against their own best interest.

Republicans have been lying to their voters for decades. Now that the American People have seen their support of Republicans cause their wages to become stagnant while the rich get richer, they've seen Republicans help insurance companies earn billions while the American People's coverage declined, and as OHIO has shown the world, the American People are NOT going to continued to be robbed by the Republicans who ONLY love Big Corporate Conglomerates that DO NOT have the Average American Worker's best interests at heart.

i don't vote republican or democrat. they are both thieves and liars and to think other wise is just plain ignorance.

up until the dems owned both houses and started passing their spending bills i used to get annual raises. now both parties are playing to keep their jobs. they could care less about you or me. they just want our money to give to foreign countries and special intrests groups.

Left and Right, nobody wins if we keep putting the same two parties in power, they BOTH work for the corporations. if you keep voting them in our country is screwed. I had two choices last night. left or Right. I believe they are both crooked and bad for our country, i wrote my vote in.

think for yourselves and stop attacking each other.we need a MAJOR THIRD PARTY for real competition and change.

VOTE LIBERTARIAN, INDEPENDANT OR WRITE IN, stop being a puppet for your party masters.

It never ceases to amaze me when some people (people!) come on this blog and complain so vehemently about the average American Worker earning a decent wage.

girl, i make good money and i don't have to pay "dues" to do it. i just worked hard to get where i'm at. everybody seems to want something for nothing these days. you have to work to prosper. tax payer money is not a personal bank account for the lazy.

I am not only a nurse, but also a paramedic in OH. Throwing nurses in on Issue 2 was all smoke and mirrors. I dont have free healthcare or a nice fat pension. I dont have someone "fighting" for my job regardless of my performance, even if it is substandard. I pay costly insurance premiums. My retirement is going to be whatever money that I have choosen to set aside and save or invest on my own. My job(s) are "at will" and contingent on my good performance. The only thing that unions do for nurses are provide the OBN with collective bargaining so that we can practice at "advanced practice" levels that are still very limited in comparison to the majority of other states.

I guess Ohio becomes the new Michigan - a place no one in the world wants to start a business. Explain to me, those who voted against curtailing the growth in public employee benefits, why would anyone move to your state? The beautiful winters? The high taxes? Easy access to Pittsburgh?

If you run a business and pay your worker Cr*p you will get Cr*p.

Union tradesman are trained and professional. Rats are whatever you get for the lowest bid.

Do we really want lowest bid always. Common wake up and pay people a decent living wage.

If you are a redumbican and earn less than 250K you are truly an Idiot. They are not out to protect you only thier bottom line.

My brother is a independent businessman running an automotive shop in TX-he is the 3rd generation in the business. A non-union shop that delivers the highest quality of work & has the highest rating for customer satisfaction. Better Business Bureau Business of the Year for 2010 too. People who were customers of his grandfather, their grand children & great-grand children are his customers. He has mechanics who have worked for him for over 15 years.

Do you think union shops have that reputation of honesty & quality? All one hears from unions is "What's in it for me & I want to do the least amount of work to get it."

My husband and 2 children are at the lower end of middle class, my husband was highly recommended for a county position as a heavy equipment operator, because he was a registared independent and the party in office (DEMOCRAT) and the big bellied local democrat blocked his being hired and the position was handed to a 24 year old "just out of school" with no experience. But guess what he was a SON of one of the good ole boys on the job-- can you say NEPITISM?????? Most unions are FULL OF IT!!!! The pay they demand and the ridicululous

I cannot believe this current America! This is not my America. We used to help one another. Neighbors would bring food; the men brought their expertise in housing repairs and the women brought delicious baked goods and pots of stew. We hung with each other until the problem was solved. All the adults knew the kids from my neighborhood and they helped our parents keep us in line. We celebrated holidays together and threw some amazing block parties. What happened? Greed is running wild in our nation and no one seems to care. The returning G.I.'s will have no jobs to return to, the jobs bill has been rejected!

If he/she is sick and cannot afford health care, "Let them die!" (Applause, applause!). If they fought for your safety on some foreign battle field and it comes out that they are gay, ("Boooo-boooo! Hiss, hiss!"). If they are sentenced to die by the courts; that never make mistakes BTW, ("Hurray, hurray, fry the bastard!)

If you think you should help your neighbor, or that the very country they also paid their tax dollars to, should help them recover, "You are a f,ucking Socialist and you are trying to rob me. BUT, an initiative that gives more tax dollars to the already filthy rich, ("Yeah, yeah! Way to go Congress!") This is not my America; not at all!

As a kid my parents told me we had won our rights to be Americans as part of Roosevelt's New Deal.. Unfortunately the Republicans don't believe we have rights. Republicans believe only the rich have rights. It's still good to know Ohio is part of America

There was once a football game- winner take all- between the rich business owners and the union. It was played by the railroad tracks (a home game for the union). The score was tied, when the noon whistle blew. The business owners left on the train, and took their company with them. 4 plays later the union scored and won. Celebrate Ohio!

Greed will not allow business to leave. They've built there nest and won't spend the profits to relocate.

Besides, business owners could care less about collective bargaining. Only republicans find it a benefit to reap from it in votes.
