Ohio voters reject curb on labor unions

In a rebuff to Republican Gov. John Kasich, Ohio voters have decided to reject curbs on public employees.

The Associated Press projected that voters would reject S.B. 5, the law enacted last spring by Kasich and the Republican-controlled legislature that limited the ability of public employee unions to collectively bargain.

With nearly a third percent of precincts reporting, more than 60 percent of voters were rejecting the law.

The law also would have required performance-based pay for most public employees, limited the accrual of vacation time, and required public employees to pay 15 percent of the cost of their health care benefits. While the health care cost sharing was popular in polling, the curb on collective bargaining by public-sector workers was not.

“The repeal of SB5 is a monumental victory for working families not only in Ohio , but all across the country,” said Michael Sargeant, executive director of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee.

The victory for organized labor is an encouraging sign for Democrats as they prepare to battle for Ohio’s 18 electoral votes in the 2012 presidential election. President Obama carried Ohio with 51 percent of the vote in 2008.

Hate to tell you but Ohio layoffs have already started. The number of unemployed in Ohio was 300,000 in June and now 550,000 in November. This vote scared off a hell of a lot of businesses, but what the hell do you care?

"Hate to tell you but Ohio layoffs have already started. The number of unemployed in Ohio was 300,000 in June and now 550,000 in November."

Actually half-wit, I looked it up. The number of unemployed Ohioans in June was 516,898. How catacstrophically stupid do you need to be to find the phony figures you've posted even remotely credible?

Idiot look at and get back to me. Latest numbers are there. Plus all the corresponding numbers that give proof to what is happening. And as you are so intelligent, just where is Ohio going to come up with the $10 billion to close the deficit?

#29.5 - Tue Nov 8, 2011 10:35 PM EST

Uh I did look at it, you useless half-wit. AS I POSTED, contrary to your lies, the number unemployed in June was 516,898, precisely. As anyone can see.

#29.6 - Tue Nov 8, 2011 10:37 PM EST

And if you are increasing the June numbers then you are making the statistics a whole lot worse then what I said. The graphs show a increasing number of unemployed in Ohio so if you take your number of 516,000 and add the 80% increase then the real number now is close to 900,000. Thank you for the "new information".

I just love bleeding heart liberals who make no sense.

At least it won't be the money of the middle class. How 'bout we look at some of the inequities in how the wealthy and corporations pay taxes? There's sure a lot of money we could get to decrease the deficit.

too bad you are so ignorant! this wasn't about money. 94% of public workers in OH paid the amount required or even more in sb5(issue 2). they have had furlough days, no raises and increases in health care and pensions for the last 5 years or so. the concessions public workers have given oh is around $1 billion! the tp governor Kasich came in and gave HUGE tax cuts to the rich and corporations and then cut education and attacked our teachers, police officers, etc. he is disgusting! this is about taking away the rights of workers to have any say, to crush middle class workers pay and benefits and to harm unions. they want to push middle class workers into the lower class. Kasich is owned by koch brothers and the tea party corporations. this is a win for working people!

While I admit that employees should pay for their health care, I have to admit that removing some of their collective bargaining rights is not necessarily a good idea. Unions must also bear the burden of budget cuts, but why can't we fix some of the problems with a few more in taxes and a Negotiated settlement with unions. If the unions agree and you get a deal, better for Ohio. If the unions refuse, the GOP will get some sympathy. Thats what Kasich should have done, instead of giving himself away. I like unions, I am a liberal, and I like Ohio now. If only the govt and the unions negotiate a compromise...

kasich already planned on higher taxes for regular working people! he cut taxes for the rich and is making cities come up with the shortfall to pay for roads, schools, police in their communities since he gave that money to the corporations! he came in and gave his staff big raises, cut taxes for the rich and corporations that own him, cut education and went after middle class workers. stupid that middle/ working class allow themselves to be pitted against each other for the scapes while the rich laugh at how they have been able to get some people to blame teachers and police officers for the bad economy and totally don't understand who actually caused our problems! that would be these same corporations that own our politicians and are working to push all of our salaries down so they don't have to pay more than slave wages! stop working for the 1 %!
