Bachmann takes veiled shot at 'frugal socialist' Romney, 'confused' on core beliefs

WASHINGTON --  Without calling GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney or any of her other rivals by name, Republican presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann on Monday described others in the GOP field as "frugal socialists," adding that some are "confused" about their core beliefs on abortion, same sex marriage, and the "urgency" of repealing the Obama-passed health care law.

"Unfortunately for too many Republicans, they also aspire to be frugal socialists," Bachmann said in an address at the Family Research Council headquarters in Washington D.C., adding that "some" of the GOP candidates tolerate "socialized" medicine because of a flawed understanding of government that sheers too closely to the president's.

"We cannot preserve liberty for ourselves and our posterity if the choice in next November is between a frugal socialist and an out-of-control socialist," she said in a clear but unnamed reference to Romney.

Pressed by a reporter to identify exactly at whom she was leveling her charge, Bachmann demurred, replying against a soundtrack of giggles in the room: "You see, that's part of the puzzle that you figure out."

In an address heavily focused on the proper role of the federal government, Bachmann listed what she believes are cracks in the conservative philosophies of others in the presidential contest, labeling as "naive" those who would use executive orders to roll back the health are law (which Gov. Rick Perry has proposed), and pledging that there will be no "policy surprises" from her campaign (referencing flip-flops from the likes of Romney and Herman Cain.)

"I am far from a perfect person, but I know who I am and I will never deviate from the principles that I have fought for all of my life," she said.

Zeroing in on the issue of abortion rights, she also took anonymous aim at rivals Romney and Cain, whose past statements on the issue have been muddled in the eyes of some social conservatives.

"Some Republican candidates seem confused about what it means to be 100 percent pro-life," she said. "I am both personally and publicly pro-life and our candidate has to do more than just check the box on the issue of life."

While aiming most of her criticisms against the GOP rivals she refused to name, Bachmann also swiped at the current president, linking his political philosophy to the ongoing nationwide protest movement against the top percentage point of the nation's wealthy.

"He has been willing to engage during his presidency in a massive redistribution of wealth and in the politics of an 'Occupy Wall Street' envy to achieve his purposes," Bachmann said.

The Minnesota congresswoman charged that Obama's beliefs run counter to a basic tenet of Christianity. "The 10th Commandment teaches those shall not covet thy neighbor's goods," she said. "It's time to act on this self-evident truth."

She also offered particularly harsh words for the United Nations, which she called a "threat to the American family" due to its international standards for children's rights, and she called the threat of the institution of Sharia Law in the United States "an issue that Americans are rightly concerned about."

Bachmann travels today to South Carolina, where she will campaign before Wednesday's CNBC debate in Rochester, MI.

NBC's Jamie Novogrod contributed.

Bachmann said in an address at the Family Research Council headquarters in Washington D.C

The wild eyed (@@) MN ding bat strikes again!

Is Ms. Bachmann aware she is speaking before a 'hate group'?

Of course she does, it's called her base;

the Family Research Council was recently designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center because of their virulently anti-gay views — they are disturbingly influential among conservative lawmakers. Their legislative arm’s annual “Values Voters” convention drew such speakers as Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA), Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX), Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), and former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) this year.

Oh my - I was just reading the economic outlook for Ill. It was bad before, but it looks like things have gotten way worse here recently.

You all elected a new governor, right?

So Ill. is in Cali type dire straights.

So what is it about being a doomed state that makes them also solid Obama supporters?

Cali., Ill. and NY - all hosed. All progressive paradises.

Interesting, right.

But gang, and here is the money part - we got us a governor MoonBeam that is now talking about 401k retirements plans for state workers.

Is this the begining of the end of Blue paradise here? And if here, then how long until pension reform comes to Ill. and others?

Unfortunately no. I think they will continue to vote blue as their only real hope of fiscal salvation is a federal bailout, and that is not going to happen with a Republican president.

Gotta love Bachmann. No hypocrisy here. Such steady consistency in her own positions.

Unlike Romney, for example, she is firm in her belief that the world began 6,000 years ago and the Pope is the anti-Christ. Except that she had to change churches when people found out about that Pope thingy.

And she's firm in her belief that people should not take money from the federal government. Except for running temporary foster homes for teenage girls with eating disorders, accepting Medicaid payments for undoing teh gay, and accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal farm subsidies.

And she believes steadfastly that public employment is bad. Except for those years during which she "infiltrated" the IRS as a tax lawyer in order to learn its secrets -- in other words, the years she learned how to cheat on her own taxes.

Ah, well, it's probably best not to be too persnickety about this.

As Emerson said,

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by statesmen, philosophers, and divines.

I live in her district (and I apologize). She and her husband have bilked the fed government for 10s of thousands of dollars for their clinic designed to "cure" gay people despite her statements regarding big government payments for anything like this. She is a bigot, a dingbat and a waste of time. She has done nothing since she became a representative (call her on it) and that's after spending years as a lawyer going after accused tax cheats. Where is her head? Why would any sane person even listen to her? I certainly don't and I hope she is to busy trying to be president (never happen) to run for her house of representatives seat. Do us all a favor and gag yourself.

I'm glad Bachmann brought up the 10th Commandment. What woud Jesus say about designed tofail securities that fleece people out of hard eneaned money.?And Bachmann won't apporipriate funds to allow SEC secirites investigations to prevent that. If she really believes that why did she accept campaign contributions fron Denny Hecker- an outo magnate convicted of fraud andTom Petters also convicted of fraud. Why did she write a letter orrecommendation for one of Petter's right hand man who was covicted of a felony? The fellow went onthe commit more cirmes.

You have to more than talk about the10th Commandement ,Michelle.

Where is Michelle with today'snew that HermanCain attepted to grab a women's genitals, even when he knew and had met the woman's boy firend. Would she apply the 10th Commandment here? Or will she maintain her stoic silence.

If she does that become a silent endorsemnt of Cain's behaiviour.

To better understand why Romney can’t get his poll numbers out of the mid 20’s all you need to do is read this article from Politco.com that talks about the people he is hiring including 3 former Bush-era officials whose recent records include lobbying for Solyndra and advocating on behalf of cap-and-trade legislation and carbon taxes.

Don't you think Romney will be a better general election candidate than a primary one?

Likely Dem (takes a landslide to flip): CA, CT, IL, ME, WA (98)
Lean Dem: MN, NJ, OR (31)
Toss-up: CO, FL, IA, MI, NV, NM, NC, OH, PA, VA, WI (147)
Lean GOP: AZ, GA, MO, NE (one EV), NH (42)

You think his moderate stance will hurt him in the Lean GOP or Toss-ups? I think he'll play well in MN, NJ and OR (although I don't think he'll win NJ). CT and WA will be interesting though.

If the economy is still bad, and people will remember that Obama got the stimulus he wanted and the economy didn't improve enough, then independents and moderates will look at the alternative. And compared to other potential alternatives Romney is definitely the strongest candidate.

The GOP does not hate women in particular. They hate everybody who is not rich, which necessarily includes un-rich women. The un-rich are somehow defective and always beneath contempt. Old, young, boy, girl, woman, man -- not rich? -- you're just a grasping undeserving peasant. Not rich? You have failed to take personal responsibility, no handouts for you, and kindly stop trying to appeal to those rocks where there should be hearts and brains. Women are merely collateral damage in the GOP's war on the un-rich.

@Jimee - agreed. And the sad part is that the Republicans would have us believe that it is only the Democrats who are out of work, only the Democrats that are poor, only the Democrats that need healthcare. That's what's so scary is that they have embedded in the hearts and minds of Republicans that they really are rich, really are important, really are not poor, really are given complete healthcare. I know that is not true. I know my neighbors who have been laid off are both Republican and Democrat. That some now need medicaid, that some have lost their homes, that some need food stamps - Republicans and Democrats. But for some reason, they have brainwashed them into believing that the more that is given away to the rich, the more will trickle down to them. What I want to know is how they really get them to believe that crap?

When will the GOP and politicians like Bachmann realize their extreme positions on abortion are not shared by the public at large. This abortion debate is getting old. We've been debating it for thirty eight years and nothings changed. Conservatives rail about freedom, yet they want the government to have a say in a personal decision between a woman and her doctor. It's time to end this debate and move on to important issues.

Why is the bankruptcy of the U.S. NOT important to Democrats/liberals?

Instead there are hundreds of articles here about every word uttered by people like M.Bachmann.

Harry Reid says "it's foolish to have a budget."

Is the man high on something? Talk about incompetency!

Does anybody remember when Michelle was leading in Iowa and running very well nationwide? That fact alone makes me wonder if the Teabaggers aren't some form of a cruel joke. Obamacare, as she refers to it, is A COMPLETELY PRIVATE PROGRAM. It is in many ways more conservative than the plan outlined by NIXON in the early 70's. But little facts like that don't bother Bats---. She just keeps on blabbering nonsense. Everybody is a socialist. I find it humorous that she cites the Biblical commandment about not coveting. I haven't heard her talking about Christ's teaching on the difficulities of the rich making it to heaven, or the widow's mite, or Matthew 25, or the prodigal son, or any of the basic tenets of her own religion which involve love, charity, mercy, and forgiveness. She doesn't understand her own religion. But that is not unusual among Southern and Midwestern fundamentalists. Many of them are full of resentment and selfishness. And many are so convinced of their own theology, that they cannot conceive of different opinions. I hope her husband is not wrestling with homosexuality. It is very sad if he settled for her in some misguided belief she can assist his salvation. She is one big thundercloud of negative energy.

I made 5 million $ why should you bums get any. I worked hard and invested now I (not you ) reap what I earned! I will no longer donate either to organizations that support in any way the Idiot losers of OWS. And yes if I owned a company and had employees involved in any way of OWS they would be laid off and never recalled.

We are so happy you made your $5M. No OWS bums want your money, except for that portion of "your" money that should be paid in the form of taxes for those silly things such as defense, which protects you and your millions, roads that you use, and other public infrastructure. The good news is that you don't own a company, because you would be out of your millions with all the wrongful termination lawsuits.

It's time for Mr Bachman to use her willingness to obey her husband and tell her to shut up and stand two steps behind him and to his right as he leads her back to the farm to shovel animal droppings.

While disliking Michelle Buchmann's politics is your perogative, in fact, most people disagree with her even those in the republician party. Please keep in mind that we are living in the 21st century, and most women don't appreciate the idea of walking behind a man. If it is bad for one to be treaed that way, than it is bad to treat any woman that way. Lol! I don't mean to lecture you, but I just though it would be helpful to share my perspective with you. This is the age of the women. They are well educated, professionals, hard working, etc. They are even serving in the special forces now. In spite of all that, they are still sweet and lovely, mom's, sister's, daughter's, grandmom's and deserve to be treated special. Look at President Obama's wife...She was his boss and Hillary was largey responsible for Bill Clinton getting elected. I though that both of the Bush first ladies were great, but I didn't like the bush's policies.

TruthBeingTold: He was being sarcastic. You see, there are stories in the bible that say a woman should be subservient to her husband. Mrs. Bachmann is always professing her Christianity, however she chooses to be in politics. The bible says to "be in the world, but not of it". There are many stories in the bible that Mrs. Bachmann chooses to ignore. She recently said that if you don't work, you should not eat! She doesn't realize that it is very difficult for some people to find a job these days. Why this woman gets any attention at all is a mystery to me.

There are far too many Americans who dismiss misogyny in this country as a non issue. Although the GOP's response does not surprise me I have seen it on both sides of this two party one agenda system that is quite frankly gone beyond corrupt.

"Bitchy Bachmann" has no morals, common sense, no intellectual ability, no social policy sanity, no foreign policy experience, and no clue of what to do. She should just get back on her "Special" Blue Bus, and go home. "Bitchy Bachmann" is a "Bonehead Birther," and she has no ability to comprehend what is read or said to her. She poltically smells of rotten tea bags, and she needs to get out of her distrurbing clown outfit. The circus music keeps playing over and over in her "echo chamber" of a hollow mind. Getting ready to vote yet America?? I hope so!

The more Bachmann criticizes Romney, the more I would consider voting for him.

Is intelligence a bad thing to the G.O.P.? Mitt Romney and Ron Paul are intelligent, and yet the idiots get all the attention.

Somewhere in the bowels of hell (Texas) Satan gives birth to people like Michelle Bachmann. He then sends them to earth to try and ruin peoples lives. Anyone who would follow Bachmann should be aware she is born of the Evil Ones - The Koch Bros. Her brother from another mother was Sarah Palin.
