Koch-backed group confirms financial ties to Cain campaign manager

A major conservative advocacy group, funded by Koch family oil interests, says it is reviewing its "financial dealings" with a Wisconsin charity headed by Herman Cain's campaign manager, raising fresh questions about the source of tens of thousands of dollars in funds that were used to pay expenses for Cain's presidential campaign.

The Center for Public Integrity reported late Thursday that Americans for Prosperity, one of the largest and most prominent of conservative political groups, has confirmed unspecified financial transactions with two closely linked Wisconsin non-profits -- Prosperity USA and Wisconsin Prosperity Network -- that were founded by Mark Block, Cain's campaign manager.

One of those groups, Prosperity USA, paid for $37,000 in expenses, including iPads, charter flights and items, for Cain's presidential campaign, according to financial documents disclosed this week by the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel.

Non-profits are barred by law from paying for campaign expenses, and when the allegations  first surfaced this week -- at the same time as the sexual harassment charges against the presidential candidate -- Cain said he would order an investigation of whether there were improper campaign violations.

Cain's campaign lawyer, Steve Bienek, declined to answer questions from NBC about the transactions between the Wisconsin charities headed by Block and the campaign, saying only that the campaign  has retained an outside law firm to review them.

"We take these allegations very seriously," he said.

But the Center for Public Integrity report by Peter Stone raises additional questions as to whether Americans for Prosperity (AFP) funds were used by Block to pay Cain campaign expenses. AFP had "financial dealings with Prosperity USA and/or the Wisconsin Prosperity Network," Levi Russell, the spokesman for AFT is quoted as saying.

(Russell confirmed the transactions to NBC News, but declined to elaborate, and added that the group had no reason to believe there was any wrongdoing on its part.)

Some of those transactions are hinted at in the documents released by the Journal-Sentinel: They show a $5,000 expense in February 2011 for Cain to attend a meeting of a group called RightNation "at request of AFP" and that Block made a trip to Washington to meet with AFP's president Tim Phillips and David Koch."

Koch and his oil industry brother Charles Koch were the founders of Americans for Prosperity, but the group -- like most non-profits -- declines to identify its donors. The group is having a major conference in Washington starting Friday at which Cain and other presidential candidates are scheduled to speak.

Feisty -

Yet more confirmation that the Popover Candidate Cain is serving as a puppet for the right-wing corporatist front groups funded by the Koch brothers and other business interests.

And, besides Cain's completely empty views on policy, the economy, domestic issues and world affairs (hey, that's virtually everything, isn't it?), that's another reason I call him the Popover Candidate. He's simply a hollow shell filled with hot air, not even his own person. He's owned and operated by far-right business interests.

So, indeed, why would Cain even bother becoming informed and engaged in the substance that is the job of the U.S. President? He just goes out front, plays Punch 'n' Judy for the audience, while the right-wing "think tanks," lobbyists, and business associations send their hacks to handle the actual work. And they know what those jobs are, serving their masters.

P.S. This brings to mind what the Vanderbilt family at the turn of the prior century thought of a Senator they literally owned. Said one daughter of the clan to her father, asked why she wouldn't have the Senator to dinner, "You don't let your butler sit down with you at dinner. Why is he any different?" Betcha Cain doesn't get invited to the Sunday repast at the Koch homes, either.

It is blooming scary to even think of one of these guys as a President of our country. Koch brothers are nothing but billionaires interested in their own pockets...they have funded a bunch of ultra conservative racist organizations and have given money to all of the GOP runners and those who are in office. It's time to limit contributions ,and spending for elected office. If running for the office of president was limited to,say 2 million dollars TOTAL,start to finish,it would level the playing field. It would also mean whoever got elected would be less likely to owe favors to a big contributor.......I won't even mention Corzine...................U.S.Army Disabled Veteran

One of the people Cain told all this information went to work for Perry a few weeks ago and then all of a sudden this information hits Politico. We all know where it comes from read the sign on his hunting ranch.

We all know the Koch brothers are corrupt, and should have been tried for treason years ago. They are both just another couple of elitist who think the laws of this nation does not apply to them. Would you actually have your boss tell you how you are going to vote in any election?

Cain was practically raised withing Americans for Prosperity. He has been molded and bred to be a presidential candidate for business for years. He is a puppet and this illegal campaign money is just one of the tangible connections between Cain and the Kochs.

An empty suit. This guy can't even name half the countries surrounding the middle east or Afghanistan, but what's worse is that he thinks its a joke! - "Ubeki-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan."

If I interviewed a candidate for a position in my business and he made light of necessary critical information that he would have to know by saying nobody can be expected to know that and then cracking jokes, I would flush his application down the drain. Herman Cain defends his ignorance saying that he will surround himself with experts or learn on the job. I'm sorry America, POTUS is too important of a job to just hire some wingnut who thinks "I'll learn it as I go" and "smart people are nerds" is going to cut it. Certainly it is too important for a corporate shill who makes light of people with knowledge and takes delight in his own ignorance.

What the TeaReps don't get is that what the Koch's and their minions did was ILLEGAL

Non Profits are not allowed to fund political campaigns, Move On is not a charity, it is a political organization, these two groups were charities (Well CHarity Fronts) See to allow a charity to fund politics is to allow people to deduct a contribution for tax purposes as a charitable contribution when it is really a political contribution (Laundered).

If you despise the Koch Brothers then be careful not to fund them, boycott their products: Stain-master Carpet, Dixie ups/Paper Products, Brawny Paper Towels, Mardi Gras Paper Products, Vanity Fair Napkins, Angel Soft Toilet paper, Northern Bath Tissue, you can find more on various websites. They have the right to speak, (Though they hide their involvement)--you have every right not to help fund them. I used to use Northern, Dixie and Vanity Fair. Now I do not, and have not for 3 or 4 years.

Major funders of extremist right wingers will not get my money. And my company 2000+ Employees no longer uses Dixie in our kitchens or the Commercial Products of Georgia Pacific. The restaurant chains I do consulting for use Solo cups now.

Politico should be pleased to know that I am now open to voting for Mr. Cain. One of my considerations of a candidate is not only who are their friends, but who are their enemies ?? Trying to torpedo a candidate because he is a Black man unwilling to be fed the diet of failure the Democrat party has fed minorities for far too long simply won't fly with me.

Mr. Cain may not have the knowledge or experience in how our government works (which normally requires being a Governor, U.S. Representative or U.S. Senator, but that has obviously failed with the last two Presidents) to be a viable Presidential candidate, but feeding potential primary voters a diet of bogus scandals is a strategy doomed to fail

"Koch-backed group confirms financial ties to Cain campaign manager".
SO FREAKIN' WHAT?!

Leftist groups and financiers like George Soros and ACORN are far deeper into meddling in political affairs than anyone. They fund groups to flood blogs (like Newsvine) with paid trolls to create the illusion that they have the majority opinions on issues, they send buses full of paid (aggressive and violent) protesters and SEIU union thugs to events pretending to be "grassroots" organizations or citizens, and use the same technique bringing busloads of out-of-town lift wing lunatics to crowd into town hall meetings to shout down the genuine concerned citizens, and registering dead people in order to stuff the ballot box and cheat the honest citizens out of their right to vote.

No-one outdoes the left in the criminal, malicious, treasonous actions and lies they use to bully or cheat their way to fooling the gullible and misinformed public into a tyranny.

In other news: We find that Obama has taken in record funding from groups such as Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley while he attempts to convince the public that he is 1 with OWS. In addition, major campaign bundlers running Solyndra, Fiskar, and Beacon, have been rewarded by Obama by funneling the taxpayers money to their now defunct corporations. In other news we find that the state departement has used taxpayer funds to buy $70,000 worth of Obamas autobiography to give out around the world. Obama thanks the taxpayers for this generous gesture as it will enhance his book royalties substantially. And finally he gives the taxpayer additional thanks for allowing him to list his 2 daughters as senior staff on Michelles African trip so that he would not have to pay for them out of his own pocket.

I'm beginning to get bigger laughs out of these clowns what with Perry doing his Foster Brooks impersonation, Bachmann crazy eyes look and stories, Romney flip flopping like a halibut I could go on but you all seen the show.

On another note, some numbers and names...part of the 1% in fact .01% of it Wes Bush, Northrup/Grumman $22.8 million per year, Robert Stevens, Lockheed/Martin $21.89 million per year, James McNerney, Boeing $19.4 mil. while spending $15.7 million in 2010, $12.7 mil. and 417.98 mil. respectively on lobbying. Where do they get their money?...mostly government contracts.

The Constitution was ratified 1789 with one reference to god, article 6 "No religious test..." de facto motto was E. Pluribus Unum (out of many, one). 174 years later 1956 congress adds "In god we trust" to our money. Pledge of alliance written by Baptist minister Francis Berkley did not use the phrase "under god" added in 1954. All this was done doing the "red scare" of the 50's and since we are now under attack again we must reaffirm these mottoes. This is how the clowns in the house spent the other day thanks for addressing the economy and jobs! Now thats not so funny just sad.

Why would they be WCA, he is not going to get the black vote, or labors vote, or flip any democratic voters, he is only popular with republican primary voters and only because he is in a field of weak candidates, if Christie would have gotten in those republican primary voters would have dropped Cain like a hot potato. I don't think the left fears him one bit in a head to head match-up against Obama, and by the way the only republican that is beating Obama in a head to head match-up in the polls is an imaginary republican named Generic. When Mr. Generic throws his hat in the ring then maybe the left will have something to fear.

OK, I've read this post three times, and I still don't understand what makes Prosperity USA a "charity." It sounds like Block set up two non-profits for the purpose of funding Cain's campaign. How is this different from any other PAC? What charitable purpose were these organizations supposedly doing? I don't get it. Somebody read this and explain it to me.

    Afraid? How?

Herman Cain, is now and always was a strawman for the Koch agenda, and if he sold a few books along the way, it was a win win all 'round. Trouble is the TP thought he was a gift from on high, then when the questions came with the scrutiny of a frontrunner, his answers showed he was not a viable candidate and that he really has feet of clay. His trouble with 'sexual harassment problems and how he is handling it only adds to his negativity.

Why would we be afraid of this bumbler?

The left of Herman Cain, or the right of Barack Obama.

    Amy:

It sounds like Block set up two non-profits for the purpose of funding Cain's campaign. How is this different from any other PAC?

I don't know the nuances, myself, but the way it was done is illegal. There are certain limitations on what any PAC can do, but this was outside those limits.

Good question, Amy. Webster's defines "charity" as follows:

"1: benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity

2a : generosity and helpfulness especially toward the needy or suffering; also : aid given to those in need b : an institution engaged in relief of the poor c : public provision for the relief of the needy

3a : a gift for public benevolent purposes b : an institution (as a hospital) founded by such a gift "

Since when are "non-profit" and "charity" interchangeable terms?

MAY “THE FORCE” BE LIFTED HERMAN CAIN!

Speaking to a group of supporters today in Virginia, Cain said,

"There is a force at work here that is much greater than those that would try to destroy me and destroy this campaign."

What force? Legally binding documents? So far, the voters of Iowa don't seem to mind the allegations, which is what really matters anyway.

But as CQ notes the NRA "will sooner or later feel compelled to do the politically smart thing and release both women who have accused Cain of inappropriate sexual behavior from the gag-order clauses."

Now, the woman who accused Cain of misconduct and took the severance pay wants to speak out, but is barred from doing so by the terms of her agreement.

"[Cain's] basically saying: 'I never harassed anyone. These claims have no merit,'" the woman's lawyer tells the Times.

"And I'm sure my client would have a comeback to that."

According to the paper's four sources, the alleged encounter took place "in the context of a work outing.” A relative of the woman spoke about the attention surrounding the incident:

"This is not something we asked for. This is not something we brought on."

The embarassment that is the Cain campaign grows….Herman Cain is being accused of sexual harassment by a third former employee.

The ex-staffer, a woman who worked for Cain at the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, told the Associated Press that GOP candidate displayed aggressive and unsolicited behavior, including suggestive remarks and inappropriate gestures. She claimed that he even invited her back to his apartment, a breach of company policy.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A third former employee says she considered filing a workplace complaint over what she considered aggressive and unwanted behavior by Herman Cain when she worked for the presidential candidate in the 1990s. She says the behavior included a private invitation to his corporate apartment.

She worked for the National Restaurant Association when he was its head. She told The Associated Press that Cain made sexually suggestive remarks or gestures about the same time that two co-workers had settled separate harassment complaints against him.

The employee described situations in which she said Cain told her he had confided to colleagues how attractive she was and invited her to his corporate apartment outside work. She spoke on condition of anonymity, saying she feared retaliation.

Cain's campaign declined to comment to the AP.

According to Politico, GOP pollster Chris Wilson told a radio station that the alleged

"episode took place in the neighborhood where Cain kept an apartment when he headed the restaurant trade group." Wilson said, "This occurred at a restaurant in Crystal City (Virginia), and everybody was aware of it. It was only a matter of time because so many people were aware of what took place, so many people were aware of her situation, the fact she left — everybody knew with the campaign that this would eventually come up."

In an interview with POLITICO, Wilson said he

was present for the episode and that it took place in the late '90s.”

Wilson declined to say specifically what Cain said or did to the woman, but that the CEO's actions made other individuals at the table uneasy.

"It was very uncomfortable," said the pollster, recalling that

other individuals present asked Cain to stop.”

Wilson said there were at least three other people at the gathering but wouldn't share the name of the woman for publication.

    Radio Station confirms charges

Chris Wilson, a former NRA staffer, told Oklahoma radio station KTOK that he witnessed Cain sexually harassing a woman at Virginia restaurant in the late 90s. Wilson said that while he could not discuss specifics of what happened, he believes if the woman were to talk about it "I think it'll be the end of his campaign."

Politico does add, "Wilson is a Rick Perry supporter and does polling for a Super PAC that supports the Texas governor's presidential bid." But Wilson wants to make it clear he did not leak the story.

Fouth charge of harassment comes forward from Iowa radio station.

The White House hopes of Herman Cain have been dealt another blow after a conservative radio host in Iowa accused him of subjecting two of his female staff to "inappropriate and awkward" behaviour.

Steve Deace, who has considerable influence among Christian conservatives in the state where the first votes in the contest for the Republican nomination will be cast in two months time, said Mr Cain was "compromised in his private life".

As the radio host gave an impromptu press conference in Des Moines, his two female staff were rushed out of the building where he works, protected by men who prevented them being asked questions by journalists.

Mr Deace, the Iowa radio host, did not say when the alleged incidents at his radio station happened but he has stated previously that he first met Mr Cain in July 2009.

"To bring up any further evidence or to add any more specifics really puts the burden on our staff and not really where the burden of proof for the American people belongs which is with the guy running for President of the United States," he said.

When asked about the latest allegation, Mr Block, the Cain campaign manager, made a cryptic reference to a receptionist.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/republicans/8867608/Herman-Cain-woes-continue-as-radio-host-accuses-him-of-inappropriate-behaviour.html

Will the “Force” shielding the Cain campaign be lifted? We should know today.

The National Restaurant Association is expected to announce on Friday whether it will publish a statement from one of the women who accused Herman Cain of inappropriate behaviour when he was chairman of the organisation.

A spokeswoman for the association, Sue Hensley, said a copy of the woman's statement had been received from her lawyer on Thursday and would be considered overnight.

The decision of the association, which Cain headed in the late 90s when the alleged sexual harassment took place, looks like a lose-lose situation for him. If published the statement could provide the first detailed account of what until now have only been vague charges. If the organisation refuses to publish it will look as if there is something significant to hide.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/nov/04/herman-cain-faces-public-airing-harassment?newsfeed=true

The two women who received settlements signed agreements to maintain silence. But a Washington-based lawyer, Joel Bennett, acting on behalf of one of the women, wrote to the association on Thursday asking for the ban to be lifted and for her statement, which he provided, to be published. Hensley told Reuters on Thursday: "We are currently reviewing the document and we plan to respond tomorrow."

No one is afraid of Herman Cain winning. It's not the election that libs, progressives and Dems are focused on (quite unlike conservative GOPers). Cain hasn't got a chance in the election. What people are afraid of is what would happen IF he actually won. The whole country should be afraid of that. This thing isn't over on election day. This isn't some race to a trophy. This is about selecting a qualified leader who then has a job to do. A tough job. A job that has consequences. If all the candidate excels at is the interview process, then we're @!$%#ed.

So be afraid of empty headed suits who have been bred by Koch think tanks. Don't let them through the interview process.

And can we PLEASE STOP with the whole liberal/right-wing media hoopla!? Let's get this straight: it's all CORPORATE MEDIA. All theses news outlets care about is the bottom line. And how do they improve the bottom line? By increasing viewership/readership (because that equals advertising dollars). And how do they increase viewership/readership? By covering controvery...whether it's true, false or somewhere in between. They can print complete and utter BS as long as they say in the article that "some speculate" about this or that or whatever.

So I ask you all: what will create more controversy? A now seemingly front running potential presidential candidate breaking all sorts of campaign finance rules which could possibly destory his candidacy or some has-been politician, whose political career is beyond over, running his company into the ground by possibly defrauding its customers?

Do we all see now how the main stream media works?

This says it all about Mr. Cain - in the master scheme of things, I don't care as much about Cain's reported sexual misconduct as I do about his ties to the radical Koch brothers. Cain and any other politicians knowingly accepting funds from the Koch family should NOT be considered serious candidates of change since the Koch brothers continuously funds the rich getting richer off the sweat of hard working Americans and are intent on destroying the middle class and labor unions.

            TruthBeingTold,

Every man/woman has their own life experience, especially when it comes to "racism." My opinion about race is only my opinion.

Why can't you be happy for a man like Herman Cain who feels that his success was unimpeded by racism?

Why perpetuate the HATE ? Is that what you want for your children because you are not helping the younger ones . They need optimism, not hate and disappointment.

I am reminded of an ad that runs frequently on the Lifetime Network. A successful, educated woman of hispanic heritage begins by talking about her wonderful day of meetings with high powered executives and then ends it up as a sad story because somebody supposedly mistook her for a service worker at the hotel, because she was walking to get ice from a machine in the hallway. First of all, that is pretty offensive to all folks who work in the service and hospitality industries (the idea that somebody wouldn't want to be mistaken for them), but secondly, the implied message was that she was only mistook because of her race and sex.....I have had numerous occassions when I was mistaken for a store clerk, or perhaps an usher, facilities monitor...that particular day, without my knowing in advance, I had worn some clothing article or style that was similar to the person of whom they were seeking assistance. I never got offended, and I think that it is sad to say that people can assess their worth in society by a mistaken identity in a chance encounter. It is even sadder that they have to assume that it is a race issue, or a sexist issue that resulted in the mistaken identity

Like I have been saying for years, all political parties in this country are corrupt. We need term limits of no more than six years in any fed office, including president. Six and done no more life time pols, at the expense of the tax payer. Outlaw all lobbyist. And get big money out of politics altogether.

If there is a change to six-and-out, the only ones who'll know anything are staff. Theoretically at least, electees are responsible to their electors. With a the power balance tipped in favor of staff and newbie electees dependent on staff, the staff will be even more the legislators than they are now and only indirectly accountable to electors.

I don't know if it is possible, but maybe setting term limits on staff positions would be wise as well. That would take away the reasoning that staffers would know it all. After all, we limit the amount of time someone can be in the military so there is a presedence.

As you can tell by now, Hermie is an empty suite with no knowege of foriegn affairs or even domestic affairs. He has nothing but his stupid 999 pizza plan. What is sad about this revelation is the fact that it confirms the influence of big money in American politics. Our politicians, regardless of party affiliation, depend on the contributions of special interests to compete and succeed and, when they win, they are indebted to those who helped them achieve their political goals. This unfortunate state of affairs was endorsed and facilitated by the Supreme Court year or so ago.

When the Koch Brothers were shopping for a tool they thought could beat Obama they decided on Herman Cain. He was perfect in so, so many respects.

They secretly funded his campaign through a non-profit group they own and Herman knowingly and gladly took the money. That is a felony and Herman may be Joining Tom DeLay soon, playing basketball for one hour a day.

Add this to Herman's frisky nature and his misogynistic attitude towards women and you have a real "Holy Crap" week for the Koch Brother. I am betting they didn't Know about Herman's appetite for women.

I figure that when all of these allegations of campaign violations are investigated, it will be shown that the Koch brothers' foundation works in the same manner as does George Soros' Open Society Institute.

These foundations provide funding for other organizations that then provide funding for even more organizations until the money reaches levels that are allowed to make campaign donations.

Just a few of the groups to which Soros provides DIRECT funding are:

                                  The Center for American Progress

                                  MoveOn.org

                                  Media Matters

                                  Planned Parenthood

                                  Project Vote (ACORN)

                                  Think Progress

                                  The Tides Foundation

I find it impossible to believe the protestations of ignorance from some of the Leftists on this forum about Soros' activities. You need simply to Google "Soros funded" and you will find a choice of categories; PACs, media organizations, and activist groups, etc, many of which have campaign fund-raising arms, that are either directly or indirectly funded by Soros.

The TRUTH is that Soros OWNS the Democratic Party and most of the most radical left-wing groups in the country. You surely can't believe that he has unlimited access to the Obama White House because of his sparkling personality, can you?

Instead of voting to make the US motto "In God we trust" shouldn't it be "In Koch we trust"? Instead of USA maybe the Repubs would like to change it to KSA!
