The House will vote tonight on a bill that would solidify the phrase "In God We Trust" as the nation's motto, and would support and encourage "the public display of the national motto in all public buildings, public schools, and other government institutions."
The vote should occur around 6:30 pm ET.
The bill, which was introduced by Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA), will likely pass with the two-thirds majority needed to pass, but it is not without its opponents. In a report of dissenting views from Democratic members of the Committee on the Judiciary Committee, five Democrats call the bill "unnecessary" and a violation of "the First Amendment's prohibition against the establishment of religion."
The List of Dissenters: Reps. John Conyers (D-MI), Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Robert "Bobby" Scott (D-VA), Melvin Watt (D-NC), Judy Chu (D-CA).
Key Statements in Dissenting Opinion Report:
"For more than 50 years, the National Motto has been the law of the land. While some have questioned its constitutionality, none of these challenges has succeeded. We wonder, therefore, why the Majority believes this precatory intervention by Congress is so necessary."
"By aggressively pursuing a vehicle that places the government in the position of making an affirmatively religious statement, the Majority has transgressed the clear line between government and religion in violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment."
Here is some background information on the "In God We Trust” motto from the report:
The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase received many appeals from devout persons throughout the country, urging that the United States recognize the Deity on United States coins.
From Treasury Department records, it appears that the first such appeal came in a letter dated November 13, 1861. It was written to Secretary Chase by Rev. M. R. Watkinson, Minister of the Gospel from Ridleyville, Pennsylvania.
. . .
As a result, Secretary Chase instructed James Pollock, Director of the Mint at Philadelphia, to prepare a motto, in a letter dated November 20, 1861:
Dear Sir: No nation can be strong except in the
strength of God, or safe except in His defense. The trust
of our people in God should be declared on our national
coins. You will cause a device to be prepared without unnecessary
delay with a motto expressing in the fewest and
tersest words possible this national recognition. It was found that the Act of Congress dated January 18, 1837, prescribed the mottoes and devices that should be placed upon the coins of the United States. This meant that the mint could make no changes without the enactment of additional legislation by the Congress. In December 1863, the Director of the Mint submitted designs for new one-cent coin, two-cent coin, and three-cent coin to Secretary Chase for approval. He proposed that upon the designs either OUR COUNTRY; OUR GOD or GOD, OUR TRUST should appear as a motto on the coins. In a letter to the Mint Director on December 9, 1863, Secretary Chase stated:
I approve your mottoes, only suggesting that on that
with the Washington obverse the motto should begin
with the word OUR, so as to read OUR GOD AND
OUR COUNTRY. And on that with the shield, it
should be changed so as to read: IN GOD WE TRUST.The Congress passed the Act of April 22, 1864. This legislation changed the composition of the one-cent coin and authorized the minting of the two-cent coin. The Mint Director was directed to develop the designs for these coins for final approval of the Secretary. IN GOD WE TRUST first appeared on the 1864 two-cent coin.
Another Act of Congress passed on March 3, 1865. It allowed the Mint Director, with the Secretary's approval, to place the motto on all gold and silver coins that ''shall admit the inscription thereon.'' Under the Act, the motto was placed on the gold double-eagle coin, the gold eagle coin, and the gold half-eagle coin. It was also placed on the silver dollar coin, the half-dollar coin and the quarter-dollar coin, and on the nickel three-cent coin beginning in 1866. Later, Congress passed the Coinage Act of February 12, 1873. It also said that the Secretary may cause the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to be inscribed on such coins as shall admit of such motto. . . .''
The motto has been in continuous use on the one-cent coin since 1909, and on the ten-cent coin since 1916. It also has appeared on all gold coins and silver dollar coins, half-dollar coins, and quarter-dollar coins struck since July 1, 1908.
A law passed by the 84th Congress (P.L. 84-851) and approved by the President on July 30, 1956, the President approved a Joint Resolution of the 84th Congress, declaring IN GOD WE TRUST the national motto of the United States. IN GOD WE TRUST was first used on paper money in 1957, when it appeared on the one-dollar silver certificate. The first paper currency bearing the motto entered circulation on October 1, 1957. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing was converting to the dry intaglio printing process. During this conversion, it gradually included IN GOD WE TRUST in the back design of all classes and denominations of currency.

They are religious cult members ....92 % of American's "ARE NOT " cult members ! That why you have such a backlash going ! What a total waste of time !
I don't care if they are debating "In cod we crust", House Republicans are relentlessly delaying, distracting and wasting time away from the immediate & critically urgent issue of creating jobs.
Remember how GOP ran JOBSJOBSJOBS last November.
Not one Jobs Bill or one job has come out of the House; where congressionals under GOP now works 3 days a week, two weeks on and one off, since January.
GOPtp has refused twice to create 1.9 million jobs by voting against the American Jobs Act;
While millions of American tax payers who foot the bill for their fancy pay checks -- are just scraping by if they are lucky, to make ends meet.
WHERE"S THE GODDMANED JOBS???
Oh, and my 2nd question is- just WHO'S 'God" is it we are supposed to be trusing in???
OK, I can't type..... but these ASSH*LES!!
"...and would support and encourage "the public display of the national motto in all public buildings, public schools, and other government institutions."
Would this mean, that if those folks in the mural in Maine that depicted honest, hard working people, and one of 'em was sporting a crucifix, the mural would have not only stayed, it would be praised??
Ah, Drive By - still running up that hill, eh?
The government does not create anything, let alone jobs. Even Debbie Wassermann Schultz admits that.
But tell me- how do you feel about Pelosi's latest, that the governement should shut the South Carolina Boeing plant down because it is not a union shop?
Seems like that would be the exact opposite of creating jobs, eh Drive By?
But maybe you can tell me why the government has any interest whatsoever in whether a private company is or is not union?
Me, I think the botox needle went in a little too deep this time.
Drive By, since yo actually think the government can create jobs, what have you done to light a fire under all those democratic representatives and senators? How about your own?
Have you done anything Drive BY? I mean, it's not as if you are going to be creating, or even supporting any jobs.
Teapublicans are entirely too fixated on public art. They remind me of the Soviets.
http://www.sunjournal.com/state/story/1004031
I don't know I'd call them cultists. I'd go with Religious Extremists.
Let's face it, the GOP is doing this because it doesn't have, or doesn't think it has, anything better to do. They can't pass any bill Obama and the Democrats might approve of or they might help Obama's reelection chances. They also can't pass any bill that might help the economy for the very same reason. Can't have that.
So they are stuck with bills that appeal to their inbred knuckle-dragging base. These bills help nobody and do nothing other than prove the ignorance of today's Republican Party.
I agree with the dissenting Democrats.
And I agree with many others who have already written here that yet again the right wingers in the House are deliberately wasting the nation's time rather than face up to their responsibilities.
But they've been doing that all year. The 112th Congress is by far worse than the infamous "do nothing 88th Congress."
Would that be the God of Fire or the God of Wind? Wasn't Zeus a God? What about Hades?
I think Hercules was a half God, does he count too?
They need to be more specific here.
Hello, Spanky --
I've been waiting for you to come by off-topic. Perfect.
Because I wanted to talk to you about Wisconsin.
You see, I have taken the position that the recall elections accomplished something, if only in that they stopped the Walker agenda.
And you, of course, have scoffed at my naivety.
So this article is for you.
http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt-and-politics/on-politics/article_bdea8cbe-04a7-11e1-891c-001cc4c002e0.html
Essentially it says that Walker's plans for redistricting Wisconsin before the upcoming recall elections are going to fail because there are not enough votes.
What, you say? How is this possible? Republicans maintained a majority in the State Senate, even after the recall.
Ah, but as I mentioned to you, the majority is only 17-16, and Dale Schultz, a moderate republican who voted against the bargaining bill, would be unlikely to support any more of Walker's radical proposals.
And sure enough.
Sure sucks to be Walker these days, Spanky, what with this, and the recall, and lousy job numbers, and the FBI breathing down his neck, and everything.

Ditto what John A. said, agree with every liberal comment.
"The government does not create anything, let alone jobs. Even Debbie Wassermann Schultz admits that"
You ignorant twerp. Try to stay on topic for once, will you? (I mean.....CAN you??)
Since it was brought up by the daily "change the subject" poster, the Government creates millions of private defense industry jobs by buying the products made, every dollar spent on infrastructure creates jobs in the private industry so that's hogwash and splitting hairs.
My Friends
You absolutely must read The Wrecking Crew by Thomas Franks. This is a typical distraction, a bright shiny object that is trotted out for the specific purpose of keeping "Republican" cannon fodder occupied. This is their M.O., and it keeps their low-intellect minions from noting that the G.O.P. lackeys - McConnell, Boehner, Cantor, Kyl, and other RINO liars - are not doing their jobs.
They have been busy attacking women's rights to win the black hearts of the anti-choice group. None will win. We have the monumentally important attempt to repeal the law regarding wasteful light bulbs. It did not win. They have attacked unions. They are attacking regulations. They are doing everything possible to restrict voting rights. In most cases they have lost. Where they have "won", it appears likely those efforts will be turned back.
Their solutions to the budget is either to cut taxes on the wealthy or to increase them on the low-income groups.
What they have NOT DONE is to solve the unemployment problem as they promised. They are outright liars and now they have the nerve to come before us and piously suggest that we need a motto that says "In God we trust". This is beyond disgusting for a party whose only god is money.
Well it looks like the House has to bide their time while the Senate figures out who they want to tax.
It appears Senators Reid and Rockerfeller are lobbying for the rich to pay a just a "Teeny, Fraction More". Harry and John didn't mention anything about spending cuts, so this "Teeny, Fraction More" in taxes will have to cover the $1.5 trillion dollar deficits Obama is running.
Maybe Harry and John can introduce their latest tax scheme in the form of a FY2012 budget? Maybe have a vote on it? Or, God forbid, actually pass a budget? Or, maybe they can just talk about it, they're good at that.

"The government does not create anything, let alone jobs."
I missed that nonsense the first time. What a load. The last time I looked the Government (federal, state and local) employed more people than any corporation in the country. To say the government doesn't create jobs is to say, "Lookie here people, I'm an idiot!"
I thought they trusted in Norquist?
It does seem odd that we talk about trusting God on that symbol of all evil, money.
Nov 2. 2010, elections were held throughout the country. The republicans campaigned on the slogan “Where are the jobs” and ‘smaller government’. They won a sizable majority in the House and closed the gap for majority in the Senate, mostly with Tea Party support. Since then, the 112th Congress has accomplished nothing to create or even help create a better jobs market. In fact, it would appear by obstruction to have even made the situation worse, and they are happy about it.
They took their oath:’ I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.’
Does any fair minded voter think that they have faithfully discharged their duty as they swore to? It would not appear so from their actions?
Before this Congress took office, almost all of the republican/Tea Party, had signed Grover Norquist’s pledge not to raise taxes. Plans were also drawn up, that no one would deviate from the party platform or proposed legislation, the goal being at all costs, make Barack Obama a one term president. It was determined to work two weeks in DC and one week ostensibly in their respective districts. That plan, effectively shortens their work schedule, no matter how it is presented, so more time to stall the process in Congress or waste time would be a better way to look at it. For example, this month Nov. the House works a whole 11 days and in Dec a grand total of 6 days.
When they are in session, what is the first piece of business they take up? Social issues. Women’s Reproductive Rights, Abortion defunding, and other flaming necessities such as defunding of Planned Parenthood, NPR etc. This how they waste time and slow the process, so little if anything of importance, is ever accomplished.
In the States with Republican Governors, the concerns of the party for jobs (!) are cutting jobs and or benefits of government workers, including cutting funding to pay for teachers, firefighter, police officers, and union busting of those who would object to the loss of benefits and jobs. So working hand in hand with republicans in DC and in States, this Party, is systematically destroying jobs and doing nothing to create or foster an atmosphere to help create jobs.
Some people may not realize, that the GOP/TP party has their legislative agenda (federal and state) written for them by an organization, American Legislative Exchange Council, commonly known as ALEC. so when you send a GOP/TP representative to Washington or your respective State Legislature, their agenda is already set, they will follow the party line down to dotted i’s and crossed t’s.
I wonder how any reasonable, fair minded individual, would ever vote for a Republican/ Tea Party candidate, considering what little they are capable of doing. We have to endure another year of this inaction and we are paying these clowns…handsomely, and on the weeks off, any number of them fly all over the world, again on our dime, supposedly fact finding, if they find any facts, when would they use them, they are rarely working. Both sides of the aisle indulge in these practices, but by far the GOP/TP are the worst offenders, especially in this session. They do not deserve to be re-elected. Wake up people, we are being snookered by a bunch of elected ‘ insurgents’ who have the destruction of our country as their number one goal. This, all because they want one man to lose a re-election to the highest office in the land. Hate has a huge price tag.
The average American is disgusted as to how they have been betrayed by these politicians, evidence of that is all around us every day as the Occupy Movement continues to grow. There is a sense of abandonment, that Congress no longer gives a damn about the average American, that it is all about the corporations and the richest amongst us, so rich most of us could never envision what that would be like. The sense of unfairness in the system is palpable, this is why the people are out demonstrating every day of the week and being tear gassed in some states. Americans understand what fairness means, it has always been a hallmark of the American Spirit, those politicians who ignore the lack of fairness due so at their peril.
Some genius above said "The government does not create anything, let alone jobs"
I better go down to our new Federal Court house that's being built. because all those construction worker, don't know there working for free.
And Interstate is still being completed. All that material and workers do the job for NOTHING. I could go on and on about all the federal projects going on in my Conservative state, Since we're one of the biggest leaches on the Federal Government T!t.
Again Some people just repeat what they hear on the radio. Just like a Stupid Parrot.
Well they are certainly working the 'G' OP trifecta
G-d, Guns and Gays
They said they were going to work on jobs, jobs, jobs; but they didn't know jobs starts with a 'J'
Frickin' perfect, right?
Gingerbread Mamma, text your post to some young people, and tell them to text their friends, they need to hear what you are saying, they feel it, even if they don't understand it, help them understand what they are feeling and what they can do about it.
Poor drive By - can't answer, so forced to issue personal attack. Such a simple world you inhabit Drive By. Funny, but it was you Drive that raised the JOBS issue. That is your topic you big silly.
AM - funny about Walker. I have read that his Draconian plans, particularly for the school districts have been working out very nicely, and that many many teachers have ot had to be laid off.
I have also seen that the stomach for more recall is waining. So guess we'll have to wait and see if you are or are not successful in ousting him.
My prediction is you will fail.
Not sure what your point is for re-districting, but it happens all over, even in the progressive paradise know as California.
Odd, right?
So much time being wasted on redundant laws about things that are already the law. It is already illegal to use taxpayer funds for abortion. It is already law to have "In God we Trust" on our money, there is no need to have it plastered in every government location as if we won't remember unless we see it everywhere. Isn't there a saying about "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."? This is a waste of taxpayer money. Why don't we just send them home with no pay until they can come back to Washington and actually get something done for the country.
Well, then, Spanky, you didn't attend the seminar that I did last week where a well-known public sector management attorney suggested differently. And, pray tell, if you're right, then what DOES account for all those public sector layoffs in Wisconsin -- something like 9,000 last month alone?
But don't let the facts stop you, Spanky. Just keep guessing.
As for the recall, I think you'll find that when the Ohio bargaining law goes down, it will be "Yes, we can" in Wisconsin, as well. We've only just begun here, Spanky.
The point about re-districting was this: Walker isn't the only recall target. Several other legislators will be eligible for recall come January. And now, it will be the districts that elected them, rather than the gerrymandered re-districts, that will decide those recalls.
In the long-term, it means that Walker's re-districting may never take place at all.
It also shows that Walker no longer controls the state legislature, and in that way, Democrats did score a victory in July and August.
As for DBO's point, I tend to disagree. Feel free to go off topic whenever you like.
It merely highlights that you don't have an argument on the topic at hand.
You sound tired, Spanky. I sympathize.
It must be tough defending the indefensible every day.
As ususal, Spank's way off. "Ignoratnt twerp" wasn't meant to be anything other than descriptive.
For example: There are a BUNCH of folks up on Pendelton Pike in Indianpolis working for the government in, I believe, a payroll processing facility, that must be wondering who created the jobs they go to every morning. Kind of conflicts with 'government does not creat jobs' huh? Wonder if Martin-Marrietta workers know who buys the stuff they produce? McDonnell-Douglass??
Say- anyone else notice how Spank hardly brings up opinions of his own, but is more than happy to disect the ones brought up by everyone else? Did I say 'twerp'? I did?
Good.
[But don't let the facts stop you, Spanky. Just keep guessing.]
Yikes...even when Spanky goes off topic, he loses...ain't that right, Jr...
Adequacy, Spanky...strive for adequacy!
Do not feed the the daily "change the subject" poster -- Collapse as No Value, or Inflammatory in cases of stalking other FR members. You may note other personas are no longer around nor voting for this troll.
Back to the topic -- Of course Teapublicans have done nothing but lie, obstruct, and contrary to lies about smaller government have focused like a laser on Big Brother Government invading personal lives from "personhood" bills to make even birth control, miscarriages, etc. a crime, to drug tests, to ultrasounds and government-issued statements for doctors to read, to showing your papers, and just a big pile on to the Patriot Act, warrant-less wiretaps, the TSA, and you name it.
Teapublicas favor using building codes, vagrancy laws, traffic violations and anything they can to shut down our democracy, right to assemble, freedom of speech with Martial Law curfews and everything contrary to the intent of such laws.
Protect your rights -- Throw out the Teapublican fascists.
Clara:
They said they were going to work on jobs, jobs, jobs; but they didn't know jobs starts with a 'J'
Frickin' perfect, right?
So, this makes the Republicans "everlasting jobstoppers," right?
Speaker Boner Rep. Cannotor. Wheres the JOBS?
Drive by's point? Am Drive by is too silly to read his own crap. He said :
WHERE"S THE GODDMANED JOBS???
I merely responded to his question. But DBO is great - asking Republicans that question, but not the dems - you know the ones who hold the senate and the WH.
As for the rest AM, I obviously did not attend your seminar, but it sure seems that the jury is still out on Walker. You get him recalled, then we'll chat.
Until then, tired? Nope, this is getting good. All the green energy crap, F&F and SS is in the red.
But yet FR only wants to talk about silly primary stuff, over and over.
Even True Patriot said just the other day he was leaving. Of course TruePatriot apparently doesn't even listen to himself, so why should we, eh TruePatriot?
Guess you got over you disgust with all republican primary stuff all the time?
So gang - jobs is the issue. You got the white House and the senate. What gives? Or is it the government creates nothing, only redistributes?
"the public display of the national motto in all public buildings, public schools, and other government institutions."
I sure hope it does not pass. Before the Republicans keep on pushing religion to all of us, they need to understand that most of what they preach is not very christian to begin with.
I will protest if the bill passes. It is the most hypocritical legislation ever. How about the rights of the Atheists?
Seriously, such a vote is in clear violation of Separation of Church and State. Not only does this not represent the many non-religious citizens, but it does not represent other religions--in other words showing favoritism contrary to the intent of the Constitution/Bill of Rights.
It's bad enough to be printed on currency (started in the 1950s--by no means done by the founding fathers), but to make it a motto is a "gateway" to becoming a Christian theocracy. And Teapublicans and their radical right-wing social engineering is bad enough, but to focus on such BS in a time of economic crisis is deplorable.
It should be protested even if it is not passed, and if it garners a GOP/TP majority of votes, then the Teapublicans should be thrown out in 2012 all the more.
The Republicans in concert with the Religious Right are
trying to create a Theocracy here just like Iran.
You silly folks, this is the GOP/TP JOBs bill. Since we all know (according to every conservative poster here and the GOP/TP reps) that government doesn't create jobs, it must be left up to God!! Hence, "In God We Trust" to create JOBS, JOBS, JOBS, oh, and to make us RICH, RICH, RICH, oh and to lower the unemployment rate, and the list goes on and on. And if jobs aren't created, well, then they can shift the blame to God, it was not HIS will.
Oh, Anna Molly
Most EXCELLENT! good one!
At least Willy Wonka cared about poor people with CHARACTER!
Hey FR it is dead on arrival in the Senate unless it gets changed to "In Reid We Trust". lmao "popcorn" :)
DBO, you tell us where the Goddman jobs are you moonbats voted for the supposed goddman. By the way where is Fiesty you FRs suck without her leadership. They may have to shut down FR til she gets back from Occupy Land. Lmfao, "chirp chirp" :)
Say it isn't so
They are religious cult members ....92 % of American's "ARE NOT " cult members ! That why you have such a backlash going ! What a total waste of time !
Say it isn't so, How true
That is their plan, stall, delay, OBSTRUCT, and not create any J-O-B-S.
They are only want one job, President Obama's.
The Teavangelicals are a religious joke!....
A cruel joke on themselves and anyone who voted for them....the country suffers as they only pledge allegiance to Grover Norquist!
So chilled - what does Norquists no new tax pledge have to do with religious issues?
Are all tea partiers evangelicals?
I'm just a regular old atheist who hates taxes and government waste.
Do tell chilled - has the country suffered because of its proclivity to overspend? You totally cool with borrowing $.40 of every dollar spent? Is you answer just to try to raise taxes to make up the short fall?
Say, what exactly has Conyers do about jobs?
Drive BY - have any of the dissenters lifted a fingure to create a job in the last 3 years? If not, why not?
Just how are 15 million people who are unemployed, many with upside down mortgages, many are in or at the brink the foreclosure supposed to create jobs for themselves and others, why not use your smarts to talk sense with regards to that issue. Where do they get the money to go back to school to retrain for a new job or start a business, who feeds their families in the meantime. Got any realistic ideas for these people, 15 million people could benefit if you do.
So chilled - what does Norquists no new tax pledge have to do with religious issues?
Fear of Norquist, by the Teavangelicals in Congress, and his alleged power to destroy the newbies keeps them in check.....so they do anything but address issues like JOBS and the deficit. Talk about worshipping false idols!
Where are the jobs?....The 'American People' want to know!
Do tell chilled - has the country suffered because of its proclivity to overspend?
...and do tell -where were you during the last Administration...recall the unfunded wars, etc?
So there is no religious issue, right?
Oh and the dems control the Senate and the White House, so go ask them.
Or do you concede they just suck?
Glad to see you agree - the problem is the spending, not the revenue.
- Glad to see you agree the problem is the spending, not the revenue.
I DO NOT agree.......Get off the talking points!
[Or do you concede they just suck?]
Uhm, no Spanky...it is you that sucks...it has always been you...
Jr, you have no "game"...you merely regurgitate the same old tired conservative talking points. And you can't back anything up.
So, tell us how much it sucks to be you, "counselor".
chilled borrowing $.40 of every dollar is a reality, not a talking point.
But then again, you already know that.
[But then again, you already know that.]
Soooo....it seems you've added "mind reader" to your list of accomplishments...
Say, Jr...where's your sock puppet Mixed Bag been lately?
You're right chilled, where are the jobs? Time flies doesn't it. It seems like only yesterday but it s been almost three years since barry convinced you moonbat fleabaggers that he would fix unemployment with his majority Congress. Oh and then he would need a 800 billion stimulus package to keep unemployment below 8%. Unemployment is above 9% there chilled. And now the best he can come up with is another 500 billion to make all the unemployed teachers and cops. But you know the only thing you moonbats are good for is the worst Presidents i.e jimmy carter and barry obama which in turn brings great Presidents like Ronald Reagan and whoever the Republicans run next. 2012 the end of an error, lmao "crickets chirping" popcorn? :)
We have worse problems to deal with right now. This is just a wedge issue--keep people fighting each other so they don't notice that wealth and their rights are being eroded! I agree-- total waste of time! See what these weasels are doing....dealing with "issues" that are totally unimportant! But then, that's the TPGOP strategy. Wake up people--"We have met the enemy and he is us!" Pogo by Walt Kelly
They probably believe that this sort of symbolism is necessary for their base, which is all about symbol over substance.
Constitution: Amendment One: Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of a religion....
Tell me, wasn't it the "teabagger" contingent in Congress that was not going to vote for anything that was against what the Constitution mandated? Hmmmm?
This is offensive on so many levels, not the least of which that it is an affront to the folks that founded this country.
So, about jobs.....
The House during their first week passed a new rule that all bills must contain a statement of Constitutional authority.
Does this bill have such a statement?
I like shiny things. Very pretty and distracting.
AM - what say you re: Pelosi - "we should shut Boeing S.C. down?"
Seems extreme, as the government should have no horse in that race, and kinda contrary to the whole job creation mantra to me.
Should the government actually try to shut non union private businesses down, and if so, under what circumstances?
Dennis, they're good at making promises such as the one you mentioned and jobs, jobs, jobs--then once elected and promised, promptly broke their pledge.
Then flip that coin and ask for what good reason should shut union companies down.
Just to clarify the history here a bit.....there hasn't been a Ridleyville, PA for many many years. The church from where Reverend Watkinson supposedly made this suggestion is now Prospect Hill Baptist Church in Prospect Park, PA - and as far as that goes, the Reverend's actual motto suggestion was "God, Liberty and Law" - it was Secretary Chase who eventually came up with "In God We Trust". Which has never stopped our tiny borough of Prospect Park from claiming credit, of course - today there's a historical marker at the church and a big sign you can read from the street. That and the Morton Homestead (which may or may not have been where one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was born) are pretty much our local claims to fame, however tenuous the claim may be.
That being said, I think I can safely say that the vast majority of my fellow residents would gladly postpone any official recognition of our role in history in favor of Congress devoting the same amount of time and energy - perhaps even a bit more - to what we elected them to do. You know.....jobs?
Or maybe they just have more important things to do. Do we have an official national reptile yet? A national fungus? A national rock? (I'll let you write your own punchlines.....)
The Republican House is worse than useless! This is how they waste their time. Even Jesus would vote them out in 2012.
"Even Jesus?"
Especially Jesus. Jesus was about feeding the poor and healing the sick. Today's version of Republican philosophy is exactly the opposite of Jesus'.
Amy, cheers for that one; you, too nisl.
nisl, so true. The conservative attitude today is blame the poor for being poor, blame the homeless, blame the unemployed. Not much compassion left in the GOP these days. I doubt every conservative feels this way but everytime they vote for one of these legislators who have no heart or soul, they embrace the words spoken by too many.
How do you know Amy? Do you chat with him regularly?
So Jody, speaking of compassion and inclusion, how come the OWS-ers are not sharing their food with the actual homeless in the park?
You think there might be some merit in the scarcity of resources theory?
How do you know they aren't, Spanky? Were you there? Did you have a nice trip back from NYC to SD? Now back to ignoring the one who has no opinion except to mock that of others.
You mean like Obama, who runs around the country preaching about his half trillion dollar "Jobs bill", the bill that failed in the Senate, and even failed when Reid tried to break it into pieces?
You're okay with that waste of time Amy?
Look everybody, JoAnnaSmith1, spokeswoman for the Republican Party, declares that job creation is a waste of time.
Good one, Jody. No sense reading Spanky.
Amazing, Amy. Poor Smiffy. So lost in her hatred for this President that she prefers the country fail.
Kinda fitting, eh Amy?
After all you are apparently the spokesman for Jesus.
Jody - what OWS does, and does not do is well documented in the media.
Brilliant Amy. Obama promised millions of jobs with his first "Stimulus" plan. How'd that work out again? Even the Democrats in the Senate are laughing at Obama.
Hot coals babe. Hot coals.
Smiffs,
Please don't call anyone "babe" anymore...it creeps me out...
"Jody - what OWS does, and does not do is well documented in the media."
(tee Hee. *snicker*):
"I read it in the local newspaper, your Honor."
"In MY court, Mr Counsellor, we refer to that as 'hearsay' evidence. Now, beat it, twerp."
Cool Drive By, lets chat about hearsay.
Tell me everything you think you know about it.
Start with the part about direct admissions, i.e. quotes from the declarants.
I like your court Drive By, it seems fun. Divorced from reality, but then again - you are a libbie. You can't even pretend to play a lawyer in a chat room.
Spanky, are you picking on Amy, AGAIN?
Soooo many women to push around, soooo little time, eh "counselor"?
Off topic,
What's going on with the price of food, the prices are skyrocketing.
[Tell me everything you think you know about it.]
Still watching those Allie McBeal reruns, eh "counselor"?
Spank thinks the oposing party can cross-exam a newspaper page, it seems.
Where are the jobs plans, Speaker Boehner? Last I checked, the US Constitution separates church and state. Unemployment high, income disparity the greatest since prior to the Great Depression, jobs shipped overseas for cheap labor, families facing home foreclosures and these conservative yahoos waste time debating and voting on a national motto. No wonder they have 9% approval.
...soon to be POINT nahn nahn nahn percent, Jody.
Yep, soon to be zero, zip, nada; and they wonder why people don't trust them anymore.
How the hell is this nonsense much different than what the Talliban would want to see done in their countries?
DBO, there is no difference--forced religion in any faith is forced religion.
Jody,
The House has approved several jobs bills and sent them to the Senate where Harry Reid will not bring them to a vote.
So then you concede Boehner is more powerful than Reid and Obama, right Jody?
Why else direct this to him?
Reid controls the senate. Any jobs bills there?
Obama is the leader of the free world. All he can do is come up with bills that garner bi-partisan opposition.
Now of course the house has passed 15 jobs related bills, right Jody?
You do concede that, right? So what of Obama and Reid Jody?
Jody, your displeasure seems to be mis-placed.
All right Drive By - you must winning the argument if it's back to the GOP=Taliban. Fantastic.
lol Jr...eight lines and you didn't say a thing...go get 'em, "counselor"!
I am sick to death of being told who to trust. What a waste of time. Atheists unite!
I'm sure having In God We Trust as a motto will keep us safe and prosperous forever. No one would dare attack us with God on our side.
Then, you mean that it wasn't George W. Bush who kept us safe after September 11?
Which, yes, I know, begs another obvious question. ;-)
Funny thing though--the Moslems and the Jews (as well as other religions) have God on their sides too...so just exactly on whose side is God? There are numerous sects of christianity, many of which whose followers think they have a moratorium on rightness and orthodoxy--so again--which does God choose? I think Bob Dylan had it right:
"Oh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And that land that I live in
Has God on its side.
Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.
Oh the Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I's made to memorize
With guns in their hands
And God on their side.
Oh the First World War, boys
It closed out its fate
The reason for fighting
I never got straight
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.
When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.
I've learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war starts
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.
But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.
In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.
So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war." Bob Dylan
"We have met the enemy and he is us!" Pogo by Walt Kelly
nurse, Bob Dylan has been right pretty often. Thanks for posting his words as a reminder.
Jody--you are so welcome! I agree that Bob Dylan was often right, as were many of the writers of protest music! I have noticed on my radio station that old protest music is coming back, and great new songs are being written! Just listened to "The Times They are a Changin"! Power to the People!
"We have met the enemy and he is us!" Pogo by Walt Kelly
The more important question is, would God trust us.
LoL Not to the corner for a newspaper.
To the point as always Forrest!
The more important question is, would God trust us.
Comment of the Day.
Ahh, Forrest, you provided the perfect question.
Well Amy, I doubt if he would trust the Progressives. If he produced a thousand fishes to feed the masses today, the majority of the fish would go to the government to dole out to their supporters first, with the remaining few to be distributed to the rest.
Forrest,
Clearly, at least for now, the answer is no-- we haven't done anything lately to earn his trust. Instead of proposing this silly legislation these Congressmen should spend some time thinking about that.
If he asks us what have we done for him lately, what have we done for the poor, the sick, and the innocent kids caught in the grinder of unemployment, are we going to have a good answer. We gave more and more to the wealthy may not be the answer God was hoping for, from a nation with "In God We Trust as a National Motto", he might damn well be insulted.
Unlikely he would trust the conservatives. Handing out all those free fish would mean no profits, and we can't have any handouts without a profit margin for the rich.
What a total waste of time and effort. I totally agree Seattle Sue!
All the people looking for work, and/or struggling to make mortgage payments can sleep so much easier tonight because we now have a national motto. What in the name of heaven will it take for our legislators to "get it?' We need action on bills of substance---and they give us a national motto? Unbelievable!
I wish God could get a job bill through Congress, I know a lot of people have been praying for a job. God why have you forsaken us?
Forest--I am sure the Dominionists would say that God has forsaken us because we refuse to institute a theocracy with the ultra-right wing evangelical "christians" leading! Christian form of Sharia Law for all!
"We have met the enemy and he is us!" Pogo by Walt Kelly
...and Republicans offer another giant "FU" to Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Adams, et al.
What is so wrong with "E Pluribus Unum" on the Great Seal?
What a waste of time and taxpayer money. These goddamnsonofabitch Republicans have nothing better to do than to legislate morality.
"Religion should not be a part of public policy". - Senator Barry Goldwater
Whatever happened to SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!!! How utterly presumptuous of these religious fanatics to push this crap down the throats of everyone else, regardless of how they choose to worship - or not worship. This is exactly what happens in countries where religion is the rule of law. Verrrry scary that it is taking shape in this great country that was FOUNDED on religious freedom. Thomas Jefferson must be spinning in his grave.
To all who blog here: Please make note of the silly crap that this congress is engaged in. The ship of state maybe sinking in the harbor, yet all they can think to do about it is to raise their religious flag on deck.
I have never in my life seen a group of politicians so totally out of touch with reality.
DaNoid, Jack Knowlton, Jersey Tomato, James-316346--well said.
I wonder what Boyner's legacy will be ...Speaker of the House while Congress has a 9% favorability rating; record unemployment yet he says that the country is too broke to do anything.
No strategy for adding jobs; only give money to the rich, take the muffler off the smokestack and hope the rich ( sorry, the 'job creators' ) endow us with some open reqs for new hires. And in the meantime work on such critical issues as the country 'motto' and try to stop the advancement of that evil company Planned Parenthood.
Perhaps tomorrow the House can vote on the official language or the official ice cream flavor ( vanilla ! ). Perhaps they can change the constitution to make baseball finally our official past-time so that football and basketball can get jealous...
Personally, Im glad that the Republicans are making sure that we have a motto because I'm hungry and need something to eat.....
Pablo, FL. Nice post. I think Boehner and his GOPTP pals have already set a record for the most "unproductive" House; guess he's aiming for Worse Speaker Ever prize.
" I want the BIG gavel! Gimme Gimme Gimme!!"
Can someone explain to U.S. as to why the GOP/TP just don't seem to take the majority of Americans serious?
Honestly, It's distribing to watch them speak about the American statehood.
They are extremely out of touch and it's scary to me!!!
It's draw me to wonder; what exactly will it take before the GOP/TP really understand that Americans are serious and are tired of their BS. (beside voting - they seem too calm about that).
I watched Boehner talk about OWS. It doesn't phase him!!! Not one bit!!! I almost believe if people were setting on his door step- begging for food - and if he decided to help; it would be from food left over from his dog dish.
These Republicans are heartless - leaves me to wonder if they are taking something to make them be so heartless and evil.
How in GOD's name can we continue to have these type of people in a representational capicity?
If we don't vote the majority of Republicans out of congress. I truly feel in my heart that the America we onces knew - will be a thing of the past.
People will be dying in the streets and GOP/TP will just rent city sweepers to push their bodies in storm drains. (yea this sounds dipicible; and so is the ways of our Republican Party).
TRUTH - not CRAP
Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
I remember the heart of america being based on faith, tell all of those WWII vet's that they are full of crap. They remember a different america than the one you are remembering.
I wonder how many jobs this riduculous effort will create. These people do not understand what the country needs. I am not saying that I am opposed to this motto, I'm just saying......
From whom is this message (motto, slogan??) and to whom is it addressed? If it is meant to be on behalf of the people of the US, it is forbidden by the first amendment and if its to God - he/she knows our heart and is probably pissed to be used in political gimmicks and sloganeering
Not to mention, sheer political posturing and pandering!
"We have met the enemy and he is us!" Pogo by Walt Kelly
The "Gross Odd People" (GOP), and the "Really Not Competent" (RNC) are still wasting our time. Again! The "Hoodlum's On The Hill" are showing how gross they are politically. Again! Their odd political behavior is now debating about a motto?? Really?? The GOP/RNC are not competent to discuss jobs, and appear not wanting to economically do so anytime soon. The "Bonehead Boehner Bunch" are debating this?? Now this is really Behaviorally Disturbed America! Maybe the GOP/RNC are so Cognitively Disabled that they do not understand what this motto means?? Getting ready to vote yet America?? I hope so!
If this bill passes tonight, then Congress has effectively thwarted “Democracy” and “freedom of Religion” What a sad day if this passes.
Glad you can speak for the entire country.
How does my comment warrant your reaction? Taoists, Buddhists, Samkhya, Mimamsa, early Vaisheshika and early Nyaya are a few of the many religions that are Non-theistic" Only in Judaism and its extensions like Christianity and Muslim is there a belief in a god.
More than half of the world's population are Non-theistic so why would our Nation's motto be "In god we trust"
58% of americans believe in God, according to a Barna.com study.
MRWSR--Belief in God does not mean that 58% of Americans believe in making this country into a theocracy with the Tealiban's version of religion and Sharia Law! Glad you think you can speak for the entire country!
"We have met the enemy and he is us!" Pogo by Walt Kelly
I too believe in God, but not in the right to impose my beliefs upon 42% or 22% or one other American; and that's because I AM an American.
Nurse,
Not speaking for the country or saying it is ok with what they are doing. But people can not down play the number of people who believe in God in this country.
Believe in Him/Her,...that's fine,...
Just don't sit back and wait for Him/Her to write our policies,...and for the love of all things secular, don't expect NON believing citizens to take this on the chin. Get G-d OUT of government!
MRWSR, A higher percentage than that believe Elvis is still alive, So what? Why isn't this congress working on something important like Jobs?
"Crazy Cantor's Cronies" are Cognitively very slow in the House, and they may not understand what this motto means. They see it enough but they just have to still debate it. Really?? So the "Distracting and Attacking" strategies of the GOP/RNC are still going strong. What about developing a strong jobs policy for all Americans GOP?? This maybe a good question to ask your representatives America?? Progressive Power is going to ask America!
In Jobs We Trust.
Let's focus on reality, please.
Oh good --- so now our House of Representatives is going to make "In God we Trust" our national motto. Isn't that exciting!! Soon to follow will be a constitutional amendment calling for prayer in schools, a constitutional amendment to outlaw flag burning, a constitutional amendment to outlaw gay marriage and a constitutional amendment outlawing abortion. Hey Crying Speaker Tan Man, Little Boy Eric Cantor and the rest of you tetards ---- WHERE ARE THE JOBS????
