Kuhlman gave the president a strong bill of health, saying he was a physically active 50-year-old who eats a healthy diet (the president regularly cites the influence of the first lady, Michelle Obama, for that one), stays at a healthy weight and ‘on occasion drinks alcohol,’ in moderation.”
The RNC is up with a new video hitting Obama.
“Beacon Power Corp., the energy storage company that received a $43 million Energy Department (DOE) loan guarantee last year, filed for bankruptcy over the weekend, prompting a fresh wave of GOP criticism of the embattled DOE loan program,” The Hill notes.
“A Virginia county GOP committee found itself in hot water after using an image of President Obama with a bullet through his head to make a Halloween joke,” the New York Daily News reports. “An email sent by the Loudoun County GOP that included an image of Obama as a zombie [with a bullet hole in his head] has been widely criticized by Democrats and Republicans alike. The image also includes a picture of a disfigured Nancy Pelosi.”
Reaction from the state party: "The disgusting image used today on a mass e-mail has no place in our politics. Ever," Pat Mullins, chairman of the state's GOP party, told the Washington Post website. "The Republican Party of Virginia condemns the image and its use in the strongest possible terms.”
“He ran one of Wall Street’s most powerful investment banks and used to live in the New Jersey governor’s mansion,” the New York Daily News reports. “Now he’s in the throes of one of the largest bankruptcy filings in U.S. history. The curtain on the third act of ex-Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, 64, came down with a thud Monday as the Wall Street firm he took over just a year ago filed for bankruptcy.” The company, worth just over $1 billion took a big risk in buying up $6 billion in European country bonds. “As Europe melted down, Corzine’s big European investments spooked investors and trading partners.”

I'm pretty familiar with those Loudoun Republicans. They are a different breed... and that observation is coming from Prince William, the more well known radical right county to their south. This flier depicting the president with a bullet hole in his head doesn't surprise me in the least, and yes, I believe it was meant in the worst possible way. Like I said, a different breed (and that's the best possible way I know of to say it).
Loudon Copunty is the wealthiest in the nation. Thomas Frank's The Wrecking Crew uses the locale as a foil for organizing a lot of his story about conservatives running wild from the 1970's on. I admit feeling a bit of schadenfreude when he described the massive failures of developers in 2008 in Loudon County.
The county at one point tried to bring unrestrained development into hand - and the real estate lobby then proceeded to literally buy the county government in the next election. They got thrown out again in the succeeding election, but by then the damage was done. The place is a nasty little example of what the ultra-right can do when it gains power for a while.

By the way, it's only the wealthiest county in the context of income dollars without accounting for higher cost of living in this area. There's some real money there (Middleburg is in Loudoun, isn't it?). But I don't think that's the base for the county GOP. I'm guessing people who can afford to live in Middleburg have better things to do - like chasing foxes - than toy around with those children on the county board. And then if something comes up that requires them to flex a little muscle, like Disney wanting to build a theme park there a couple decades ago, they will.

So who at Beacon Power made big contributions to Obama's campaign?
For a little more local flavor of Middleburg, when JFK was elected, he bought property out there. That was going to be his weekend escape. Middleburg at the time had like three Catholics living there, so there wasn't a Catholic Church. For ordinary millionaires, it was okay making them drive to the next town on Sundays. But residents figured they couldn't make a president do that. So... they built a church. In like a couple months. An entire small but beautiful brick church, paid for by private contributions and with expedited construction.
They had the best architects and artists available working on it, too. The stations of the cross, for instance, were custom designed and a couple included Jackie's image in crowd scenes. Because it was being built for a president elect, and money was no issue, secret service requests for bulletproof and soundproof confessionals were accomodated. One of the confessionals even had a secure comm hookup back to the White House.
Totally disgusting. Adults should know better than to use imagery like that.
It's been quite a long spell since I remember Republicans acting like adults!
What is wrong with this country? I'm glad at least, some Republicans are speaking out against using this imagery. About time they policed themselves.
