Commission sets three presidential debates for Oct. 2012

President Obama and his eventual Republican opponent will square off for a trio of debates next October in Colorado, New York, and Florida.

The Commission on Presidential Debates, the nonpartisan commission that sets the schedule of debates, announced the schedule and setting for three presidential debates, and the lone vice presidential debate of the 2012 cycle.

Obama and his would-be Republican challenger will debate Weds., Oct. 3 at the University of Denver, Tues., Oct. 16 at Hofstra University in metropolitan New York, and on Mon., Oct. 22 at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. The Hofstra debate will be a town hall meeting-style format.

The vice presidential debate will be held Thurs., Oct. 11 at Centre College in Danville, Ky.

Two of the three presidential debates take place in swing states -- Colorado and Florida -- that Obama won in 2008. The backup site for a debate, Washington University in St. Louis, is in Missouri, is in a state won by Arizona Sen. John McCain (R) in the last presidential election.

"The president looks forward to next year’s debates," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in a statement. "Once the Republicans have selected their candidate, we will work through the details with their campaign and the Commission on Presidential Debates."

The commission also released criteria through which a third party candidate could make his or her way onstage in the debates. In order for a third party candidate to qualify, they would have to be constitutionally eligible, score above 15 percent in recognized national polls, and qualify to appear on enough ballots to conceivably win a majority of votes in the Electoral College.

Is President Obama going to be at the next Republican debate?

Romney picked a running mate who is the guy who's parents fled Castro's Cuba before it was Castro's Cuba?

Thanks for the info.

I work Boca Raton, FL. How do you get a ticket?

Rubio has already took himself out of the VP running. He's pretty useless as my Senator anyway, I'd rather he make himself available so we'd have a chance to get rid of his lying ass.

If its Romney, he'll need two podiums, one on each side of the President. He'll run from one back to the other depending on which side of his mouth he's talking from on any given subject.

Instead of using moderators picked ahead of time, let's have ONLY the public e-mail or call in questions.

I'd be pretty neat when one of the tea-baggers gets to ask one. The GOP candidate won't know whether to answer them honsetly, or shoot 'em the crapola they think they want to hear. The President will simply fry them on the spot!

Neither will bin Laden or Ghadaffi. For dead men, as they say, tell no tales.

Chrysler and GM employees will speak of Obama's record though.

You see dsdsherm,.....results speak for themselves. That is why the repub side is soooo silent.

I could go on, but why?

good luck with the "two sides of Mitt" thing. Nothing sticks to the guy- he has an answer for everything. Obama can't run on his record- and there is nothing he can attack Mitt with on a personal level- he's squeaky clean- so Obama has got nothing to debate with!

He'll try the RomneyCare issue with no result. (State's Rights issue)

He'll try the flip-flop issue, with no result. (Saw the light and truth of the issue after being wrong on it)

He'll try the Bain killing jobs issue, with no result. (Sometimes you gotta' saw off a limb to save the body)

Obama's got nothing in the quiver to fight with. Plus by the time the debates roll around- the SCOTUS will have ruled on ObamaCare and found it unconstitutional (4-3 with Kagan & Thomas abstaining)- which will bury Obama!

By Oct. of 2012, Obama may need Sleepy Joe to cover for him. Hopefully by then Barry and his buddy Eric Holder may only have time to appear before the Congressional hearings over the fallout from Fast and Furious and Solyndra. Better scenario than that.... neither he or Sleepy Joe will participate at all! Did we ever decide who the Democratic ticket would be if Obama/Biden don't make it?

You do know that all those balanced budgets and spending programs that you liberals like to credit Clinton with were actually written and passed in a Republican controlled House ran by Newt. For those that think Clinton was a good or excellent President might want to thank the Republicans for forcing Clinton into compromising and working with the congress, something Obama has failed or can't seem to understand. Say what you want about Newt, he was a very effective leader of the House.

Really? Which party signed a contract saying they would NOT compromise on anything?

Republicans forcing "compromise"? LOL... that's funny. I guess YOUR definition of "compromise" is to get 98% of what YOU want.

Former - Yes, Republicans did force Clinton to the center and worked with him to get compromised legislative passed and budgets (Something the Democrats have not passed in years). Show me a contract signed by anyone that said they would not compromise on anything? Just in you liberals minds, i guess. I believe your reference to 98% was during the debate on the raising of the debt ceiling, if so, it just shows what a lousy negotiator Obama and the democrats were. Obama's problem is he thinks he is entitled to what ever he wants and spends to much time running around campaigning, bashing people that don't bow down to him and his ideas. He likes to degrade the so called "Wall Street Fat Cats" but yet he has taken more campaign money from them than any other politician, that makes him a hypocrite.

Boehner: On Sean Hannity’s radio show yesterday, hemade it much more explicit: “This is not a time for compromise, and I can tell you that we will not compromise."

Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), appearing on CNN’s Parker Spitzer last night, said “there was altogether too much compromise,” and promised that “there will be no compromise

"Look, there will be no compromise on stopping runaway spending, deficits and debt. There will be no compromise on repealing Obamacare. There will be no compromise on stopping Democrats from growing government and raising taxes," Pence told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt Thursday evening. "And if I haven’t been clear enough yet, let me say again: No compromise."

Perry had said he would only commit to one more debate because he sucks at it and made excuses that the debates are only designed to tear candidates apart. AHH poor baby.

However, Perry wised up and figured he'd probably loose if he ditches the debates so, he has now committed to debate in at least 5 more debates.

Or maybe running around the country topping off his jobs bill that doesn't have a chance to pass, even within his own party?

Or Constitutional scholor that he is, passing his signature legislation on Health Care than won't be accepte Constitutionally. And the whole bill doesn't pass for the manner in which it was written.

The one who claimed weapons of mass destruction, then started two wars (off the books), while spending us into record deficits and turning a blind eye to financial industry abuses, beginning this recession. Left office, tail between his legs...THAT guy. Republicans in Congress wouldn't agree to close Gitmo, since you have a short term memory problem --You're mistaking him for the guy who has announced an end to the nearly 9 year Iraq war--the guy who GOT Osama, Got Bin Laden, brought us back from the brink economically, and saved the auto industry doing it. Podia sounds like a foot problem but either spelling is correct.

Well I say I can't wait!! Everybody's talking about the President's flip-flops but the only one that has substance in this case is Guantonomo because he didn't close the prisons over there. Everything else he's either doing, has done or have already put it in the works to do. Now compare that to Mr Romney I think if they want to debate it on flip-flop issues the President kicks his butt.

Jeffrey, even Gitmo doesn't count because Congress refused to fund the closure of it or have you forgotten the yellow stripes down the legislators back as they spread fear of terrorists running lose in the streets.

                      Jeffrey,

I can think of a few flip-flops Obama has made, here are just a couple:

Raising the debt ceiling shows a lack of leadership and puts the burden on the backs of our children (or words to that effect) as he voted against raising the debt ceiling. Lo and behold he now says that he made a mistake and needs the debt ceiling raised or the world will end.

I will not agree to extending the Bush tax cuts for people making over $200K+single and $250K+ married couples. I will veto any bill that extends the Bush tax cuts. Lo and behold be signed a bill extending the tax cuts for two years, now he owns them.

There are more, just to many to put here, but then you know what they are, you are just afraid to say them.

sfcret anyone without attention deficit disorder or convenient amnesia knows the Bush tax cuts were held hostage to provide unemployment benefit extensions-right before the holidays. And why do you keep perpetuating the Senate Super majority lie?

No matter how many times you repeat that Super Majority lie it is still a lie. And don't forget the Blue Dog Dems, either(ie. Evan Bayh, etc?) In fact, you could really say they never had a super majority because of Leiberman(I. Conn), just another pissed off Independent that consistently votes with the Republicans. he backed McCain, didn't he?

There was never a "super majority" for any length of time. Stop with the lies. The GOP/TP has set a historical record for the number of filibusters in this administration and it continues to obstruct any bills to move us forward. Senate Supermajority myth

                      January 3, 2009 - 111th Congress sworn in. 55 Democrats, 41 Republicans, 2 Independents, 2 vacant.

January 15, 2009 - Roland Burris sworn in to Barack Obama's seat. 56 Democrats, 41 Republicans, 2 Independents, 2 vacant.

                      April 30, 2009 – Arlen Specter changes parties. 57 Democrats, 40 Republicans, 2 Independents, 1 vacant.

                      July 7, 2009 – Al Franken seated. 58 Democrats, 40 Republicans, 2 Independents.

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THE DEMOCRATS HAD A SHOT AT A
                      60-VOTE MAJORITY
                      .

August 25, 2009 – Teddy Kennedy dies. Kennedy had missed 97% of the votes in 2009 and over 90% in the last half of 2008. 57 Democrats, 40 Republicans, 2 Independents, 1 vacant.

                      September 25, 2009 – Paul Kirk appointed to Teddy Kennedy's seat. 58 Democrats, 40 Republicans, 2 Independents.

THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE DEMOCRATS HAD A SHOT AT A 60-VOTE MAJORITY.

February 4, 2010 – Scott Brown sworn in to replace Paul Kirk. 57 Democrats, 41 Republicans, 2 Independents.

June 28, 2010 – Robert Byrd dies. Byrd had missed over 90% of the votes in 2010 and almost 50% in 2009 due to illness. 56 Democrats, 41 Republicans, 2 Independents, 1 vacant.

November 29, 2010 - Mark Kirk sworn in to replace Roland Burris. 56 Democrats, 42 Republicans, 2 Independents.

Super-majority? It existed only for a total of 6 months AND only during
two periods when Teddy Kennedy and/or Robert Byrd were unable to vote AND
required them to get the votes of every Democrat plus BOTH independents.

FACT: The "Democrat supermajority" is a G.O.P. lie.

FACT: The GOP used every roadblock, filibuster, and secret hold they could think of so that EVERY bill had to have a 60-vote margin to pass.

Cynthia, I believe it is you that has attention deficit. Obama could have vetoed the bill, as he promised, extending the Bush tax cuts. The fact that he used the excuse that he was concerned about unemployment benefits was nothing but political cover. Remember Clinton called the republicans bluff and the government shut down until they reached an agreement. Face it Obama just can not effectively negotiate, one reason he spends so much time out campaigning, that's all he knows. If he so concerned about the unemployed why hasn't be done something about it besides blaming republicans?

As far as a super majority, yes the democrats with the 2 independents has a super majority of 60. Remember the independents voted and caucus' with the democrats. Besides if Obama was a good negotiator he would have had the votes, but Obama wasted his time on healthcare and stimulus spending instead of jobs, and the economy.

The republicans used the same tactics that the democrats did when they were in the minority. So get your head out of your rear end and smell the coffee. Quit blaming everyone and everything on Obama's failures. Obama couldn't even get the democrats to support his budget proposal in the Senate (97 - 0 against).

On the jobs bill the republicans offered to bring it to the floor for an up or down vote, Senator Reid refused because he did not have the votes in his own party. Why is Obama's approval ratings so low, could it be that the people have caught on to him and will vote him out come 2012, even if he raises the 1 billion dollars he claims he needs to effectively conduct his campaign.

One paragraph in and my blood is already boiling at this. There is no such thing as a "nonpartisan commission" on presidential debates. If you want truly non-partisan, go back to the League of Women Voters who used to sponsor the debates. But that way, they might get a third party candidate in there.

Since the mid 90's (aka since Ross Perot), the commission has made a deliberate effort to exclude third party candidates. As it says, to qualify for an invite, a candidate must demonstrate they have at least 15% support across the polls. In fact, both of the committee heads (former RNC and DNC heads) have stated that it was highly unlikely that third party candidates would be invited, and should even be excluded from such debates.

BTW: do you wanna bet that if Sara Palin makes a 3rd party run that they'll find a way to issue an invite, even if she doesn't meet the criteria?

I think for the presidential debates, there must be some percentage of support to qualify otherwise, we'd end up with what we're seeing on the GOP side right now. If every candidate was allowed in the three presidential debates, we would have noncredible candidates gumming it up for partisan reasons. That said, I think that during primaries, every candidate should be included in the debates.

well we'd actually have to have a viable third party for them to be included in the debates, so what's your point?

My point is that how can 3rd party candidates ever get viable without the kind of exposure that a debate provides them? No, they should not invite every Tom, Dick and Harry that is running for the presidency, but they could be a bit more inclusive. Wasn't it very convenient that after Ross Perot did fairly well in the 1992 contest (19% of the popular vote) and he had a solid debate performance, that he was completely shut out of the 1996 debates? They parties clearly have an incentive to keep a third party candidate out unless it can benefit them somehow.

Chris Christie would be able to sail right into the White House .........Read and Learn from his speech at the Reagan Library.....

" We watch a president (Obama)who once talked about the courage of his convictions, but still has yet to find the courage to lead. We watch a Congress at war with itself because they are unwilling to leave campaign style politics at the Capitol’s door. The result is a debt ceiling limitation debate that made our democracy appear as if we could no longer effectively govern ourselves. And still we continue to wait and hope that our president will finally stop being a bystander in the Oval Office. We hope that he will shake off the paralysis that has made it impossible for him to take on the really big things that are obvious to all Americans and to a watching and anxious world community."

"Yes, we hope. Because each and every time the president lets a moment to act pass him by, his failure is our failure too. The failure to stand up for the bipartisan debt solutions of the Simpson Bowles Commission, a report the president asked for himself…the failure to act on the country’s crushing unemployment…the failure to act on ever expanding and rapidly eroding entitlement programs…the failure to discern pork barrel spending from real infrastructure investment."

"The rule for effective governance is simple. It is one Ronald Reagan knew by heart. And one that he successfully employed with Social Security and the Cold War. When there is a problem, you fix it. That is the job you have been sent to do and you cannot wait for someone else to do it for you.We pay for this failure of leadership many times over. The domestic price is obvious: growth slows, high levels of unemployment persist, and we make ourselves even more vulnerable to the unpredictable behavior of skittish markets or the political decisions of lenders. "

In this climate, if you can't decide between the Republican and the Democrat, a debate is not going to give you a meaningful reason to vote one way or the other. And, furthermore, remember the Vice Presidential debate between Biden and Palin? Biden can be unfocused and rambling, but his handlers had him prepped and he was at the top of his game and nailed it...Palin was her typical smarmy self and got it handed to her...and there were still people who thought she won! Listen, there is NO COMMON GROUND between the parties (other than the love of money), and there is really only a choice between a not-terribly effective Democrat and a (whoever they choose) crazy Republican - so you choose! I'm voting for Obama, as he has shown cojones on foreign poilicy, his people actually READ their intelligence reports, and the Judicial Branch is still up for grabs.

Both Solyndra and Fast and Furious are NOT GOING AWAY ANYTIME SOON, much as Mr. Obama would like to sweep them under the rug. If anything, it looks like OTHER government money went to other shaky, "green energy" companies which happened to be politically connected. This is a nice, burgeoning, metastasizing little scandal that illustrates 1) Obama's complete disregard for the taxpayers' money and 2) His crony capitalism - favoring companies that his pals own or control (George Kaiser is a BIG fundraiser for Barry Zero, and steered that loan to that worthless company.

Oh who will it be for the GOP? Cain the CEO of a bankrupt Godfather pizza thats no longer in business. Or Romney with his illegals lawn service crew. Maybe Perry who lets Illegals get a college break for the cost. Maybe Bachmann, she can pray over your gay kids and turn them straight. Oh bring on the clowns the circus is starting.

We could always vote for more "Hope and Change". As you know that has worked out really well.

Haven't you heard ? Someone stole a truck loaded with Obama's teleprompters, podiums and other such crutches the Great Brry uses to make himself look "presidential".

Oh, wait, it wasn't really stealing - it was REDISTRIBUTION - spreading the wealth around!

How'd you like to try it? Think you could cover complex topics from memory? I doubt you could relay your own driver's license number accurately.

Every president since Kennedy used a teleprompter. Look it up. It's not a new invention.

Correction. Every President but Bush. Remember that square bulge in the back of Bush's suit? It was either a transceiver earpiece, or a jet pack, and I think we can rule out jet pack.

I love the picture of obozo giving a speech to a classroom of 6th graders from behind his podium, with 2 teleprompters, on a raised dias, and a Secret Service man standing behind him. In contrast, President Bush met with the kids, on a chair at their level, in shirt sleeves, without any help, and talked with the kids, not gave a campaign speech to them like obozo.
