Cain dismisses sex allegations as a 'witch hunt'

Herman Cain continued to deny any wrongdoing related allegations made against him that he sexually harassed two women during his days as head of the National Restaurant Association, dismissing the accusations as a "witch hunt."

"I told you this bull's eye on my back has gotten bigger,” Cain said emphatically during an appearance at the National Press Club in Washington. "We have, I have no idea the source of this witch hunt -- and that’s what this is."

When asked about it at the start of the question-and-answer session, Cain said, “I would be delighted to clear the air.”

He reiterated what he said on FOX earlier: “I have never sexually harassed anyone. … I was accused of sexual harassment, falsely accused, I might add.”

He said he recused himself from the National Restaurant Association’s investigation of the accusations, saying it was handled by Human Resources and the association’s general counsel.

Cain claimed the investigation concluded that there was no wrongdoing on his part. But, he said, for him “enough said about the issue” and he would not be working with the restaurant association to release more information. (It’s not clear he could anyway because of confidentiality agreements.)

He also reiterated that despite being chief executive officer he was “unaware of a settlement that came out of that accusation.” And he joked again that he hoped the accusers didn’t get much, because, “I have never sexually harassed anyone. Those accusations are totally false.”

The National Restaurant Association today released the following statement:

“The incidents in question relate to personnel matters that allegedly took place nearly fifteen years ago. Consistent with our longstanding policy, we don’t comment on personnel issues relating to current or former employees,” said Sue Hensley, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Communications for the National Restaurant Association.

*** UPDATE *** Cain sang a few bars of a gospel song to close out his remarks.

Domenico Montanarro - Have you always had your head in the sand? If Mr. Cain did in fact, sexually harass a worker, would he not be liable to a personal lawsuit? The NRA may have paid a woman, seeking a free ride off the back of a successful administrator, to just get lost. With no credibility, and no verification, she could not possibly sue Mr. Cain! And, of course you would know if he was sued. What gives? Is Mr. Cain guilty because he is black, or because he is a Christian who sings Gospel songs, or because he is Republican? Your story is so obviously slanted to convince and persuade those who think like you do, but not geared to shed any light. Where there is no light, there is darkness. Take your head out of the sand Mr. Montanarro. We can see right through your thin, transparent guise to become a great champion of the naive and gullible. Mr. Cain was never proven to have sexually harassed anyone and your story reveals nothing.

From a earlier post I made:

For me, the issue with Cain is that he does not act like an ordained minister. He has sold his soul to the right wing demons and supports the very thing Jesus taught against….hatred. I know people think I just blog to promote my book, but the reality is that the book speaks to ‘Cain’ and the likes of him in the right wing party. If the Bible is true and all these people boastfully promote the hatred towards President Obama and others, their lives will become meaningless in the end. Are we not here for a short period of time, you know…TDY (military term). Eternity….how long is it? Can we even imagine?
I hope that one day really soon that Mr. Cain will come to his God given senses instead of the republican given misguidance. Does Mr. Cain actually, really and honestly think the white supremist are going to let another black man get in the white house from their side? Heavens no. Bless his heart, he is the best pawn they could have ever asked for.
oh yeah, the book: Attention Obama Haters: What if the Bible is True? Will your hate of this man be worth the price you may have to pay? www.booksbyannette.com
Thank you.

You brain dead teatards are a predictable bunch. Whenever a sex story about a Republican like this comes out you always make to the same two points. First you blame the “liberal media” and talk about how the “liberal media’ is out to get conservatives. Then you bring up Bill and Monica like that’s some kind of a justification. But this is the deal teatards --- this story was very, very likely leaked to the media by a Republican --- probably Karl Rove or perhaps Romney. Neither Bachmann nor Perry are smart enough to pull it off so I doubt either one of them leaked it. And – brining up Bill and Monica reminds me of my grandkids with the idea that two wrong make a right. Bill and Monica trading favors in the White House is NOT AN EXCUSE for Herman Cain or anyone else to play grab-ass with anyone they feel like.

As a Democrat I usually don't watch FOX! But I made an exception tonight and watched Herman Cain's lengthy interview with Greta van Susteren at 10pm. It made me totally sympathetic to the man. I believe him - I don't think he did anything wrong.

If you missed it DVR the re-run at 1AM EDT.

I think we have the right to know exactly who is instigating this, because it doesn't have anything to do with fixing the problems we face. MSNBC could look into who started this and out them.

UN NAMED SOURCES means allegations with out proof , UN NAMED SOURCES means its crap ,

UN NAMED SOURCES means it's not worth the paper it is printed on ,

UN NAMED SOURCES is a way in which the news media publishes LIES and false propaganda ,with out having to answer in the courts for SLANDER and be subject law suits

UN NAMED SOURCES mean there is no proof ,

        Reply#58 - Tue Nov 1, 2011 1:31 AM EDT

Tell that to NIXON................Un-Named sourcing is the basis for investigative journalism. If the journalist is presented with validated paperwork or a second source, the allegation is fair game to print. To PROVE slander you have to PROVE Malicious intent. You don't want PROOF of anything, you just want to argue to play the apologist role for the bad actors in your party.

Even if the " proof " never surfaces, some damage is done to Cain and that's what these "sources" hope for.

Saw Goldie Taylor from "The Grio" on Ed's show - and she said she has known Herman Cain for years in Atlanta and that there has NEVER been even a hint that he is a womanizer, sexual harrasser, skirt chaser, etc.! She is on the opposite side politically but simply said that women tell other women these things about men and that Cain has NEVER, EVER had that kind of rap against him. I found that very telling.

As I wrote earlier, if anyone saw the entire 20 minute Cain interview with Greta on FOX I think they would be convinced 100% that he is telling the truth - that he never harrassed anyone. And I am a Democrat! But I like Herman Cain personally - and I think this story will actually help him as people will come to the conclusion that these are baseless charges.

CBS already reported that it is backfiring - Cain got double his usual contributions on Monday.

            Reply#59 - Tue Nov 1, 2011 2:23 AM EDT

The reporting is that the women who claimed to be harrassed got paid hush money by his employer. Does Herman Cain believe that paying people hush money is the correct way for America to go, too?

The Liberals are going to hate the fact that they can't call Repubs "racists" anymore. We still stand behind Cain and we are still donating. haha

When someone thinks of a "settlement" for a sexual harrassment charge I think most people think of the $800,000 plus given to Paula Jones. Mr. Cain - when he heard the word "settlement" might have been thinking in those terms - just a thought. Not what it was - a severance pay agreement.

Again if you listen to the ENTIRE Greta van Susteren interview it becomes very clear that only ONE woman actually filed a complaint that was brought to Cain's attention.

That was never deemed to have any basis in fact and was resolved by giving her two or three months severance pay. The "second" woman - whom Politico told Cain the identity of - never filed anything - and Cain adamantly denied any inappropriate conduct with her - or any woman.

The bottom line - yes maybe being new to the political world Mr. Cain did not handle this as smoothly as a seasoned pol would have. But the question remains - did he or didn't he commit sexual harrassment? I believe his denial. I think this is a smear job by either Karl Rove or the Perry campaign - but my hunch is Karl.

I find it almost impossible to watch Greta for longer than ten minutes. And I have little to no interest in watching Herman Cain, a man with almost zero chance of winning the Presidency, sell himself to raise his book sales and speaking fees.

Anybody that worked for a company in the 90's knows that the simple accusation, true or not would generate a cash pay out, employers would cave at the first shot. I worked with a mixed gender group and the females openly said they were "fire" proof, because even if they were fired for cause they would sue and they would actually win, so this group would actually leave work and hang out at the mall all day (on the clock) and this went on for months. These fears have been mostly eliminated and the charge of harrassment gets investigated as they should have been all along.

Ann played the race card for Herman like a pro....Herman, it's not a witch hunt. Say the wrong thing and you may void the non-disclosure statement, so keep talking.

A word to the wise: a woman is not going to get paid based on a complaint about her height being the same as her accusers' wife. WTH did you say to the other woman?

Grab Michelle and Newt hand and get to stepping.

There is enough time left before the election for sufficient facts to surface that will prove Cain to be guilty or innocent.

Having working in this area it seems a "stretch" that Cain knew nothing about the investigations or outcomes during his tenure there, however everyone should avoid a "rush to judgement" and see what develops.

Why liberals would just be wasting their time trying to lynch Herman Cain...

Because he is in the process of hanging himself politically...In fact, all of the republician canidates are praying for each other to fall, so they can become the flavor of the week...Cain's flavor is black walnut [no racial point intended]. I have being thinking about planting a black walnut tree in my back yard.

Anyone notice his thin lips and small hands and no woman with him ? such as wife and kids.

If someone signs an agreement known as confidentiality it should appy to Uncle Tom Cain too.

Maybe we will find out how tall she really is.

Get real: Some believe the criminal court process only fails when a black is found "not guilty" and a Jew is convicted. No me but some think that way. Remember ethel and julius were forever innocent, untile we opened the records of the KGB circa 1992.
