Perry keeps missing his chance

Just like Charlie Brown, Rick Perry has had several chances to kick that football to the GOP nomination -- but he keeps on falling down. And there isn’t a Lucy to blame.

On paper, the Texas governor is the most logical person to benefit from a potential Herman Cain downfall.

He's currently the country's longest-serving governor. He's an outspoken critic of the president with conservative credentials. And he's got the money.

But every time Perry seems to have an opportunity to make a positive second impression, he gets overshadowed by something negative -- of his own creation.

Last week, when he unveiled his flat-tax plan, the thing he hoped could catapult him past Cain and his 9-9-9 plan, he was instead answering questions about (1) whether or not he thought President Obama was born in America, and (2) whether or not he would attend future debates.

Then today, Perry stood to benefit from the allegations that Cain sexually harassed two women when he was head of the National Restaurant Association. But, instead, what's getting attention -- besides those allegations against Cain -- is a zany speech Perry gave Friday in New Hampshire.

These openings don't come along very often, and Perry's chances at capitalizing are becoming slimmer with just 64 days to go before voting in Iowa.

As much as I don't like Rick Perry, I will say he's not an alcoholic, there's definitely SOMETHING wrong with him in the video, that much is apparent, but I don't think he's drunk. He just had some kind of back surgery recently so I'm thinking he's medicated, but that's just my opinion.

re: you really still not going to get behind the best candidate we've seen in a 100 years, Mitt Romney?

^ Well he's been a candidate for what seems like 100 years.

Not sure that's a good thing.

Prior to that his political record is basically one thing - which is implementing Health Care with mandates in Mass.

But the candidate now denounces his own health care plan, because the President implemented it nationally - so, he is politically trapped by it.

In turn this makes him seem like a double-talking phony.

    How can he survive this?

I've lived in Texas most of my life and have had the displeasure of enduring Perry for his 10 years as governor (bought by big business). Perry's behavior in this clip is completely out of character for him. He was either having a melt-down or was highly intoxicated. Most probably both. I'd love to get him out of Texas but not at the expense of the entire country.

Oh my! I just saw Perry speech on youtube and at the end they gave him some syrup...he had to be on something, at least I hope he was on something. But right now Rick, along with Michelle, Newt and Herman need to have a come to Jesus meeting and bow out gracefully.

I am a certified Drug Recognition Expert working in traffic enforcement.

In my professional opinion, the person delivering this speech is definitely on drugs.

No doubt in my mind, judging by the combination of signs & symptoms already mentioned here by many: the slurring of words, the loose and gangly body language, the lack of eye contact with cameras or audience members, the rambling, disorganized speech delivery, the repeated kitschy emotional appeals, and a generally confused presence.

This is much worse than simply coming across as unintelligent, or being unprepared to deliver comments. We're talking about a Candidate for the Presidential Primary showing up for a speech hammered! This isn't just bad, this is Axl Rose bad.

The scene at the very end is particularly indicative of very unusual "guard-down" body language, very gestural and uncharacteristically expressive for a career politician. Not to mention that his focus is scattered, he cocks his head sideways and stares sidelong at the podium, and he starts applauding before even being presented with anything.

There should be an inquest launched here. This is genuinely disturbing. I will not be voting for Mr. Perry based upon this one video.
