Perry keeps missing his chance

Just like Charlie Brown, Rick Perry has had several chances to kick that football to the GOP nomination -- but he keeps on falling down. And there isn’t a Lucy to blame.

On paper, the Texas governor is the most logical person to benefit from a potential Herman Cain downfall.

He's currently the country's longest-serving governor. He's an outspoken critic of the president with conservative credentials. And he's got the money.

But every time Perry seems to have an opportunity to make a positive second impression, he gets overshadowed by something negative -- of his own creation.

Last week, when he unveiled his flat-tax plan, the thing he hoped could catapult him past Cain and his 9-9-9 plan, he was instead answering questions about (1) whether or not he thought President Obama was born in America, and (2) whether or not he would attend future debates.

Then today, Perry stood to benefit from the allegations that Cain sexually harassed two women when he was head of the National Restaurant Association. But, instead, what's getting attention -- besides those allegations against Cain -- is a zany speech Perry gave Friday in New Hampshire.

These openings don't come along very often, and Perry's chances at capitalizing are becoming slimmer with just 64 days to go before voting in Iowa.

    hummbird,

Obam tried to bring the two parties together, you say?

    You have amnesia.

Obama said ( during the healthcare debacle) to John McCain...." John, the election is over, I WON".....and

...."We drive the car, the Repubs can sit in the back" .

Guess what, Mr.President, there are 3 branches of govt....... You are NOT KING.

Leona, Please try to stay on topic, The discussion here is about Cain and Perry. Your deflection is not working. Have you noticed that you are losing in the "like" catagory?

It seems to me that everyone is missing the point.  In the first place this smells like Karl Rove to me.  I hardly think any Democrat would waste such a gem now.  Most libs I think would be rooting for Cain like mad to get the nod.  Save the ammo for when it would do some real good.

Second it isn't even the act that will do Cain in.  It will be the cover up that gets him.  It was the cover up that got Nixon........It was the lying that caught up with Clinton, Libby and others, and so it will be Cain's undoing.  Cain has said he did not harrass anyone and didn't know about any payout????  As the head of an organization even if an insurance co. paid them for keeping quiet he had to know plain and simple.

You're replying about Cain on a Perry Post but I completely agree with you.

          1. I would love for Cain to get the GOP nod. Most Dems would love that, it's perfect.

          2. No Dem would want to take Cain down this early. We would save all this for much later. Only the GOP would work this hard to bring Cain down this early.

I predict that within 24 hours there is a good chance that he or his physician will make a statement that this was all due to the pain medications he was taking for his back. However, given that he has these issues, then perhaps this shouldn't be running for President.

This is the best you can do GOP? Seriously? Why can't you just admit it, like him or not Romney is easily the best candidate you got. They quicker the GOP gets behind Romney, the quicker they can get on with the campaign, and hopefully the quicker we can put these Tea Party people in the rearview mirror.

There just isn't anyone of any intellectual standing at all that can possibly hold views consistent with the Tea Party, because the Tea Party itself is so impractical and irrational. So, they can't find a candidate who is really completely in tune with the Tea Party who also isn't a total idiot like Perry or Bachmann. This is what happens, Tea Party, when you operate on the radical fringe. Sorry the truth hurts. Actually I'm not sorry at all.

Funny how the tea party representitive's to the election (palin, bachmann, perry, cain) are the ones who get blasted when the factual effects of their plans are brought to light. The tea party's ideology is standing in the way of this nations progress.

Well, drewv, that is definitely true in my opinion. The key here, in my opinion, isn't just stringing together Democratic victories. It's having someone in the GOP who can lead at a national level somewhere closer to the middle than the Perry, Backmann, Cain type people. We need that.

I will still vote Democratic myself. But what we need is a GOP candidate who, in a national campaign, can make a credible campaign that doesn't kowtow to the Tea Party. They need to lead the extremists, not kowtow to them.

The answer to the Tea Party is a string of electoral defeats. if the Tea Party continues to dominate the GOP at the national level, a string of defeats will convince the GOP that they need to develop voices in the middle, and then govern from the middle and so they can win, or else become a regional party of the deep south. Moderate voices in the GOP need to balance out the Tea Party. That's the answer to those lunatics.

Isn't happening yet, but nothing like repeated failure to convince them it has to happen.

"Leona" he tried, the system is broken and no one person can fix it. We the people have the power if we take it back. Politically the 99% can win by just voting.

The longer Perry stays on stage the more I realize that he is even dumber that GW Bush. What would be really scary is having another President dragging this country farther into an abyss, just when we are beginning to find a way out of 8 years of Bush dragging this country into wars and recession.

The Idea of Perry is better than the reality of him actually getting the nomination. He keeps falling for the tricks of the liberal media. He needs to pull a Newt and turn the questions back at the press.

Bruce Bartlett, Ex-Reagan Economist: Idea That Deregulation Leads To Jobs 'Just Made Up'

"Republicans favor tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, but these had no stimulative effect during the George W. Bush administration, and there is no reason to believe that more of them will have any today," writes Bruce Bartlett. He's an economist who worked for Republican congressmen and in the administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

As for the idea that cutting regulations will lead to significant job growth, Bartlett said in an interview, "It's just nonsense. It's just made up."

Government and industry studies support his view.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics, which tracks companies' reasons for large layoffs, found that 1,119 layoffs were attributed to government regulations in the first half of this year, while 144,746 were attributed to poor "business demand."

By CHARLES BABINGTON 10/30/11 01:07 PM ET

Bartlett, whose books on tax policy include "The Benefit and the Burden," recently wrote in the New York Times: "People are increasingly concerned about unemployment, but Republicans have nothing to offer them."
