Perry keeps missing his chance

Just like Charlie Brown, Rick Perry has had several chances to kick that football to the GOP nomination -- but he keeps on falling down. And there isn’t a Lucy to blame.

On paper, the Texas governor is the most logical person to benefit from a potential Herman Cain downfall.

He's currently the country's longest-serving governor. He's an outspoken critic of the president with conservative credentials. And he's got the money.

But every time Perry seems to have an opportunity to make a positive second impression, he gets overshadowed by something negative -- of his own creation.

Last week, when he unveiled his flat-tax plan, the thing he hoped could catapult him past Cain and his 9-9-9 plan, he was instead answering questions about (1) whether or not he thought President Obama was born in America, and (2) whether or not he would attend future debates.

Then today, Perry stood to benefit from the allegations that Cain sexually harassed two women when he was head of the National Restaurant Association. But, instead, what's getting attention -- besides those allegations against Cain -- is a zany speech Perry gave Friday in New Hampshire.

These openings don't come along very often, and Perry's chances at capitalizing are becoming slimmer with just 64 days to go before voting in Iowa.

Perry miss his chance? First Read and MSNBC will never give a Republican a chance.

Perry did horribly at the debates. He has made many mistakes..

But the liberal media like MSNBC, the Obama team's favorite shill network, will exaggerate and highlight these real or imagined flubs, in any event.

Check back on the headlines and analysis on First Read; compliments are sent Obama's way, snark is sent at the GOP. The only negatives written about Obama are "concerns" about his polls.

Bob, Governor Perry's flaws and flubs are not imagined.

If I can give credit to Republicans for one thing, they are disciplined and know how to stay on message...all except for Perry who appears to have not learned this lesson. Someone opened the door for him to talk about birth certificates and he took the bait...which of course meant he later had to waste time walking the comment back.

Why? Why is this an issue for him?

It doesn't matter what liberals think about Republicans. The people that are going to vote for Perry or Cain will still vote for them irregardless of what is said by Liberals. Liberals are not voting in the primary anyway in most places. They are just popping smoke.

I dont think that it was Perrys debating skill at all.

It was his nerve to say that the GOP were "heartless" when the question of instate tuition came up.

God knows anyone dare to speak the truth to these people (and by these people I mean TP/GOP people.)

-my poor mom who is a lifetime republican doest think she will be able to vote this election because the party has just gotten to extreme for her

Hate to break it to you Bob, but us liberals are sitting on the sidelines for the most part so we can watch the spectacle of these amazing Republican candidates tell us all about where autism comes from, the evil, money-grubbing scientists who dreamed up global warming, their flip-flopping views on everything from immigration to abortion and how they plan to balance budgets by cutting taxes even more than the sixty-year low we are already experiencing.

Right now it's a fun spectacle seeing them eat their own. However, this collection of intellects will have one positive influence - they're going to make George W look like a friggin' genius!

Ah, Bob, the "flubs"are not imaginary; they're very real. This is not just an issue of debating skills. What Governor Perry has demonstrated is an inability to communicate intelligently without getting tangled in his underwear, as well as spectacular stupidity in embracing Trump and the birther garbage. If he can't hold up his end in a converstation with morons like Michelle Bachmann, how is he going to handle Putin?

That sort of persona just doesn't work in a world leader. Perry is unfit for the job.

Bob 188+:

There is at least one other bob (lower case B lotsanumbers). This guy would defend anything Republican. It wouldn't matter if the entire group of Presidential aspirants were child molesters. No problem. He'd find some way to defend them.

Please don't put yourself in that class. As you can see, I've tried to commit to my very ancient memory the difference in names, because on occasion (granted, that's very rare) I find something worth consideration.

Perry is simply dumb. That's not playground variety pejorative. He is just plain dumb.

Bob, at first I thought the clip of Perry speaking in Manchester was the work of the clever little "bad lip reading" people. They are genius! Then, upon realizing Perry was really speaking, for real, and that nonsense was actually coming from his brain to his larynx and out from behind his teeth, I wondered once again, "what sane rational thinking person would vote for this clown?" The answer "none". Only hard core right wing Republicans would vote for this clown, er, I mean candidate.

As I was watching the clips all I could think was "Is this guy high?". I hope he either had a few tokes to calm him down or too much wine or whatever. At least that would be an excuse for that delivery. If he was stone cold sober and that's what he's really like, that's not only pathetic, but very very scary that he could even in a remote possibility be elected as the President.

Go ahead, right wingers. Throw mud at Obama and defend your guy for being such a great speaker with such a great mind.

By the way, I'm sure the DNC thanks you for these clips in the event Perry wins the nomination. They don't need any additional editing and can be run as is to convince the public that this man is already at a position way above his skill set. If that's what Texas wants, then good for them, but don't take the rest of this great country down to that level.

    FORREST

I seriously wonder if he was medicated or tipsy. He was hyperverbal, at times manic, slurred some words and then the facial expressions. Troubling. As a Texan I have seen Perry do the funny regular guy, or the swaggering, tough talker. This giggly, Jim Carrey impersonation was totally uncharacteristic.

I watched the whole speech. At the end he bubbled "today has been toootally awesome guuuurrrll", while waving his arms in the air. Then he cuddled with a jar of syrup and giggled like a girl. Something was very off.

I think what Al Sharpton played on this show which was a shorter vision was funnier. Remember when Howard Dean let out his howl and destroyed his chances? Well this is a whole plethera of howls. Can you imagine a campaign commercial with just little snippets of these internixed in the commercial. He's done! I did save Sharptons show to replay when I need a good laugh because it is one of the funniest things I have seen this campaign cycle or ever probably. Much funnier than anything Bachman has done. And if this was a Democrat, Limbaugh would have a hey dey. He may anyway. This is just too funny!

He's not qualified to hold any office. He's a buffoon too, who has sold his soul to the Company Store, and sold out his State to the richest people there who own him.

I've been watching Ricky Perry since he first emerged on the TX political scene. Never in that time has he ever appeared this out of control. His eyes were totally dilated indicating, in my experience with substance abusers, that he had ingested something that caused the odd behavior. Is this the TP/GOP's best offerings? A druggie, a sex offender or a vacant Ken doll?

That's kinda the point, no? What they are doing is highlighting the ineptitudes of the current crop of individuals that think they can lead OUR country. They are trying to expose their obvious and abundant character flaws, to give us all a base from which to form an opinion of the candidates that may appear on the ballot next year. kr, the people rallying behind these insipid candidates don't want to talk about the real serious issues facing this nation, nor do they want to consider serious ways to move forward. They are more concered with engineering social values, making sure we are all the same brand of "Christian" if not by choice then by the force of law, then they are concerned with easing the burdens of joblessness, a corrupt financial system, helping the people with bad mortgages, and a number of other things the Obama Administration is trying to correct. The Republicans flat out refuse to do anything constructive, including voting in favor of their own ideas. The field of Candidates the Republicans have to choose from are nothing but buffoons, with a crowd of fools and clowns defending them.

If I had been Obama I would not have run for president when he did. No matter who won , the then president was going to look bad ..the economy was already falling apart and has a long ways to go before it gets better..and the trully sad thing is that not one of these folks running today have a clue. Folks, here's the the republican philosophy summed up in a nutshell. If you want more of this, be my guest and vote republican. They made this crap up to sell it to the sheep that bought it and we are still seeing the effects 30 years later:

Bruce Bartlett, Ex-Reagan Economist: Idea That Deregulation Leads To Jobs 'Just Made Up'

"Republicans favor tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, but these had no stimulative effect during the George W. Bush administration, and there is no reason to believe that more of them will have any today," writes Bruce Bartlett. He's an economist who worked for Republican congressmen and in the administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

As for the idea that cutting regulations will lead to significant job growth, Bartlett said in an interview, "It's just nonsense. It's just made up."

Government and industry studies support his view.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics, which tracks companies' reasons for large layoffs, found that 1,119 layoffs were attributed to government regulations in the first half of this year, while 144,746 were attributed to poor "business demand."

He states debates are not important, then stepped deliberately in the pile of birther crap. Now this latest performance as an amateur comic, complete with gut busting jokes like: " today has been awesome giiiirl"

With all the money at his disposal, is this the best political strategy his campaign can come up with? He can't debate, now stinks it up in a prepared speech. So his strength is ads???......well at least no one is smoking in his ads while he smiles like a demonic clown, in a creepy slow roll.

Why didn't he just go out to begin with and say yes I was accused but nothing happened. It is always the coverup that gets you and in his case the silly/goofy/ridiculous campaign ads. Is stupidity a new campaign strategy and they think noone will notice? It has to be something like that.

...but of course the Teavangelicals ...well, oh my, what can anyone say about them....Family Values, God, Freedom, and of course for Rick 'secede'.....magic!

Rick can't put together a coherent sentence......Teavangelicals love it!

Wow! I can't stand the guy and avoided watching it, but after Marlon's comment decided to give it a try. He looks like he's totally losing it. Facial tics, hands waving all over the place in his efforts to be "a regular guy". He's never lost a race, knows he's losing this one, and doesn't know how to handle it. If more people saw this video he'd drop like a stone to the darkest depths of the ocean, never to be heard of again.

I've tried to watch it twice now and I can't get past a few minutes in. He is clearly high on something. Who could even consider putting the person who gave that speech in charge of our country?

                    HEARTLIGHT,

I was wondering the same thing. Gov. Perry had back surgery recently. I am NOT saying he is on drugs, but maybe he is unwell. Whatever this is, he is not qualified to be anywhere near the oval office.

Rick Perry had to have been high on something I still have one question for this so-called christian that is: who would Jesus execute? not that it matters now after that speech he's toast. I still feel sorry for the folks in Texas hopefully they will send him home in the next election.

Perry just doesn't seem too bright. Cain should be the one, and the current "scandal" around him is irrelevant. Even if true, I'm sure there are many who would continue to vote for JFK or Clinton despite any sexual transgressions in their past, and it should be the same for Cain.

Sexual harrasment means nothing to Repukes apparently. It's all the womans fault, and they are all liars, huh?

All are Repukes morons, or just the ones who speak in public?

twix: you may apparantly be surprised to learn, as Mr. Cain is, that some in the population don't consider allegations of sex harrassment "irrelevant" to political office. Some people actually think women are full human beings, entitled to not being sexually harrassed, and, wait for it, are even covered under the US constitution (whether they're subservient to a fetus at the moment or not). Shocking, yes, I know, but some of those people are even Republicans who are now casting about in vain for a sane candidate in their own party who doesn't think waging war on women and dismissing them as "irrelevant" is the way to win their votes.

twix. You need to understand the difference having sex with someone who wants it, and sexual harassment are two different things. Clinton and JFK had consensual sex. They did not sexually harass.

You are really running wild with a great deal of certainty about what he's done, based upon what at this point is pretty sketchy information. Tried, judged and hung in a nanosecond.

twix, the Republicans cannot (but they will anyway) make excuses for Cain as he faces this piece of his past after the way the same Republicans have behaved when the accusations were made towards Democrats. Republicans continually accept "bad behavior" from its own, but are quick to jump on a Democrat for same. I have more respect for the Republican lawmakers who were caught in their indiscretions and stepped down than I do for the throngs of Republicans making excuses for them, all the while running their mouths about Democrats who make similar missteps. Anthony Wiener is the latest example of a Democrat who effed up, tried to lie, and eventually left office. Was his behavior worse than Sen. Ensign's? Cain's dismissive attitude about the alleged incidents reeks of Clarence Thomas.

Is an ill-advised comment ("Hey, who put the pube on my Coke?") really enough to try to destroy a person over?

Twix, maybe you should read up on some of ex-Senator Ensign's "indiscretions", then get back to us. Republicans defended him for over a year before he finally stepped down. There is no need for any other glaring example of the Republican inability to look objectively at its own house.

And I believe there was much more to the accusations against Clarence Thomas, if I remember correctly from actually WATCHING the hearings on tv. And yes, I expect our Supreme Court Justices to behave much better than that - "ill-advised comments" by a superior to a subordinate should indeed disqualify one from the Supreme Court. If that is the type of judgement demonstrated, that person should certainly not serve on the highest court in the nation. You undermined your own argument. Evidently, Cain has the same attitude and made a few "ill-advised comments" to a couple of someones who did not find the humor. I fully expect the President of the United States to be, at the very least, RESPECTFUL of others. Is that even too much to ask from Republican canddidates?

I agree Twix. Sexual harrassment in Cain's case is irrelevant. His 999 tax debacle, villifying the poor and unemployed that it's their fault, stating the Planned Parenthood is aimed at killing black babies, electrifying a fence to murder mexicans trying to cross our borders and thinking it's funny, wanting to rule our country based on his religious beliefs, former lobbiest, doesn't know or care to know about foreign policy, doesn't think before he speaks and is constantly back pedaling. so you see, the harrassment case rumor is the least of his faults.

I watched thinking I would see a politician talking crap (all sides do it)...but really I wasn't sure if he was drunk, stoned (slurring speech, making faces that were creepy and just weird) or just creepy, or trying to be cute. I swear I am not saying this because I don't support him...it was like watching a mentally ill or drunk relative when he's had too much to drink or needs new meds.

I am not trying to be nasty...why was he slurring his words? Seriously...and the faces he was making and silly comments? Is this how he always talks? No snark intended...I kind of felt sorry for him in that way you feel when the drunk uncle is hanging on the bride at the wedding. Wow.

He is a well known "in it for the money" cowboy here in Texas and nothing is going to change on the national stage except his constant gaffes and feet in the mouth. He is out of his league with all of his GOP contenders and anyone who cares about America. It is all about Ricky Perry and no one else.

The governor of Texas is the most brilliant performance artist in the history of avant-garde, stand-up routines. Not even the late great George Carlin could match Perry. Somehow he has tricked the GOP Establishment into funding a national tour to audition for his own show on Comedy Central. All I can say is that I am in awe of this man's subversive genius. That YouTube clip is even better than Sarah Palin's so-called "reality" TV program.

I do not agree with John Huntsman's policies and positions, but I can't, for the life of me, understand why the Republican Party doesn't get behind him. He doesn't seem to have any political or personal baggage. He has both domestic and foreign policy experience. I am not aware of flip-flopping (although I think every single politician is guilty of this at some point.) And he seems to be quite smart. This seems to be the only guy who could go toe-to-toe with Obama. Of course, I still intend to support Obama (restatement of my original disclosure.)

I'm kind of a political junkie, and I'm not sure I'd heard about him more than a couple of years ago, maybe when the Prsident appointed him ambassador to China. Cain resonates much more strongly.

twix, is it safe to surmise then, from your post at #21.1, that one of your criteria for the president of the US is that he/she be NOT boring? Intelligent, experienced, proven ability on the world stage, respected by our "friends and foes" alike, not of concern, but the number one for you is that the President not be "boring"? Who lets you vote? Are you of legal age? I agree with AYKM - I am an unapologetic Democrat and will vote for Obama, but if I were a Republican, I would be urging the party to move behind Huntsman. As a Democrat, I fully approve of Rick Perry....

Perry is the perfect governor for Texas. He's big, he's brash, he doesn't believe in science, he is "in love with guns", He relishes ignorance, he got sub-par grades in school, he's inarticulate, and he is filled with his own sense of self-importance.

He spoke of Texas seceding from the union. This shouldn't be optional. Texas should be forced to secede.

Texas has a population of 26 million. It is quite rude to lump them all together. Yes the Bozo got elected a couple of times because he has perfected the "pay to play" game. "I got a good job for you if I have your political and financial support". Take a close look at any state and you will find very few "squeaky clean" governors. Even Chris Christie has skeletons in his closet. You like clean politics, stay away from Louisiana, Hawaii, Alaska, Rhode Island, Illionis, etc.

Go ahead an express your opinion about the governor but don't extrapolate his antics to the state.

Maybe you need to get out of Texas for a while; you may change your mind.

I lived there for 9 months and could not get out of there fast enough! Crazy unevengelicals!

I have never lived in Texas but I commuted there every week from California for 2 years. I found the people to be warm and friendly. There are great restaurants, places to have fun. The weather sucks (98 degrees and 98% humidity just doesn’t work for this northern California boy). My problem with Texas is that they appear to like having people of marginal (I’m trying to be kind) intelligence as their governor, with the strong exception of Ann Richards. And then they have the temerity to think these people would make good presidents. The country fell for this once (well, actually twice), and I’m hoping ever so much that they won’t fall for it again. Although I'd pay big bucks to watch Perry go up against Obama in a one-on-one debate. Perry would go back to Texas in tears.

I know I'm a smart-aleck, and I mean no disrespect, but WHY do they keep electing these dweebs as governors?

I was born and raised in Texas. The politics match the state. Tough talking, brutal politicians do well. However, Gov. Perry has seriously gone off the rails, and many Texans are embarrassed. I know this is just an anecdote: but my lifelong republican dad said today: " that boy won't have to secede, he's gonna get us booted"

I'm a liberal, and no fan of "w". However, comparisons between him and Gov. Perry don't work. President Bush might not have been brilliant. Perry's desperate, incoherent, and now crazy/drugged/unwell? behavior were never part of a Bush campaign. Texans don't deserve to be defined by what Perry's campaign has devolved into. Last but not least: this behavior is uncharacteristic. He's known for his big, simple cowboy swagger. This is "new and so NOT improved" Perry.

BTW: I now live in Georgia, and we are pretty horrified by the other circus touring GOP land: our own Herman Cain. Sigh.

You forgot "loves drinking with the boys." Oh, that does not quite fit with his pretend religious outlook, does it? It appeared that he thought the bottle of 'liquid gold' was actually a bottle of booze, as he caressed it so fondly. Imagine his surprise when he took a huge gulp of maple syrup!

Rick has many opportunities to appear intelligent. He should, in all due deference, try one. Not literate, intelligent.
