Bachmann says she would 'not do anything' for children of illegal immigrants

OSKALOOSA, Iowa—Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann waded into a sensitive area of immigration policy Saturday during a somewhat charged exchange at a campaign stop in southeast Iowa.

Bachmann entered an extended exchange with a college student (and Democrat) over how to handle the immigrants who are brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

After finishing a speech that focused in part on repealing the federal health care law and overhauling the tax code, Bachmann opened the floor to questions from the 100 or so people gathered at Smokey Row restaurant.

A 19 year-old college student, identifying himself as Latino, asked what Bachmann would “do to” the children of illegal immigrants.

Bachmann responded that she is “not doing anything to them,” and described why she is against the federal government rewarding citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants.

“Their parents are the ones who brought them here,” Bachmann said.

"They did not have the legal right to come to the United States," Bachmann added, of the parents.  "We do not owe people who broke our laws to come into the country.  We don’t owe them anything.”

Bachmann went on to draw a parallel to her own family’s journey to the United States more than 150 years ago.

"I dare say that probably every single person in this room descends from immigrants,” Bachmann said.

“I did—my immigrant family came here in the 1850s, and they came into the United States legally.  They received zero benefits.”

The exchange was somewhat charged, because the student, Roy Aguillon, cast the question in personal terms.

“These guys were my friends," Aguillon said.  "They are the guys who sit next to me in class, who I see in Walmart.”

Aguillon, who is from San Antonio and is a student at nearby William Penn University, is a second-generation American citizen and is active in local politics—serving as the vice president of the College & Young Democrats of Iowa.

In an interview with NBC News, Aguillon said he didn't intend to draw Bachmann into a discussion about the DREAM Act—legislation which would offer benefits, including citizenship, to the children of illegal immigrants.

Instead, he says, he was looking for a practical answer for young illegals, given Bachmann's hard line position.

“These guys don’t know anything else," Aguillon said during his interview with NBC.  "What are you going to do, send them back to Mexico?  The place is basically in the middle of a drug war.”

Aguillon says he didn’t attend the event to raise trouble, and despite his leadership role in the Iowa College Democrats, he would consider voting Republican in 2012.

He complains that President Obama abandoned the DREAM Act, and hasn’t been hard enough on Wall Street.  He says, of Obama: “He’s not enough of a fighter to be my president right now.”

Despite the personal tone of their exchange, Aguillon and Bachmann chatted following the event, and they posed for pictures together afterward, along with Aguillon's girlfriend.

As the campaign team left the restaurant, Iowa state co-chair Brad Zaun, a state senator from Urbandale, pulled him aside.

“Thanks for your honesty,” Zaun said.

Right on kid, I agree and I have said it often these young people just want to see Obama fight for them they are tired of watching him try to compromise with people who have openly stated they have no intention of compromise, none whatsoever. If the president just stays on the attack, he will be re-elected, whether the republicans cooperate or not.

That kid feels the way most people feel about Obama's lack of true leadership, I don't think I'm going to vote for him this time around, I would like to see Clinton run again and vote for her, I think she has more of what it takes as a leader .......

Only when a Republican gives a Demon-crat there own way does the Demon-crat think that there is compromise. The new type Demon-crat are not the Democrat of old. If the children of illegal aliens want to be angry at someone for their plight they should be mad at their parents. By denying rewards to illegals hoping to get a better life for their children it will discourage others from coming over to play this loser's game.

Army retired, your pension and healthcare cost me more than dozens of migrant Mexican workers who are just here to provide for their families (and incidentally, enrich our economy).

You'd do the same, risking life and limb to cross a border illegally, to do backbreaking work for near minimum wage to provide for your family if you were in their situation, right? I would. The wait for a green card can take years, so that's not always a viable option.

Yes, we need to resolve our immigration issues. But your attitude toward people who work a lot harder than you did today to put bread on the table is unwarranted. Respect for your service.

Well there is a little matter of our Constitution which says if they are born here they are US citizens so how you going to deport a citizen, it would take a constitutional amendment, ha we can't even get a jobs bill through Congress but now we are going to change the Constitution, republicans love so much and if we do that and they are no longer considered citizens even though they were born here, then who else can we deny citizenship to, even though they were born here. This is exactly why you should not have simpletons running for high office. What are you going to do when you tell the parents they are being deported and they say OK but my child is a citizen so I will leave the child in America, are you going to start building orphanages for them.

relax........I have to disagree with you.......I was an immigrant that came to this country legally and got nothing.....my family worked from day 1.......we sold everything we had and came with some money....we were never a burden on others...myself upon finishing high school joined the Marines and served for 21 years....and work today as a civilian...so YES I believe in a correct way to come to the US!.......

As far as you paying for us service members .......you did because you do not have the intestinal fortitude to serve and you left that job to those that chose to serve.

I am a ferm believer that we need to stop paying for illegal immigrants regardless of where they are from and forward the bill to their home countries for payment. This would ensure that their respective governments would act accordingly on their end!

As far as the mexicans go......it is not my fault or Americans fault that their country is @!$%#! You would think that being next to us they would have learned to govern themselves accordingly!

Well ok, first off I think Michelle Bachmann is a dope addict and maybe even a alcoholic boozehound too. Now the Mexican kid is a democrat and he's thinking about voting repube, said Obama is not good enough for him, not doing a good enough job for him so he might vote for Michelle along with his girlfriend too. recon, not to derail this convo, but I entered in '02 and recently served in Kabul (yes, a fairly safe place) for 7 months as a driver, and also stand to gain by retiring at 42 (20 years are required for a full military retirement with 50% pay and full health coverage). That doesn't make me "special" or worthy of retiring at 42. Guys who were wounded deserve that. I don't.

I appreciate your input-but consider that we DID create the problem by purchasing drugs from Mexican cartels. The guns and money for this war in Mexico come from the US.

Scott, They can say Obama is not a leader, but it doesn't make it true. It's just a form of leadership that isn't recognized in a country that is used to cowboy leadership. Change is hard. Like it or not, this country is going through massive change right now. I for one don't want to go back to the dark ages as the current crop of Republican "Leaders" would have us do. There's nobody home there that will take us forward. Nuts yes, but leaders no.

Now there is DEBATE about the 14th Amendment. The first line says--

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.

Now notice the words "and subject to the jurisdiction thereof". That means all persons must be subject to US JURISDICTION not Mexican or ANY OTHER COUNTRY. Or to put it another way BORN TO US CITIZENS!!!

Lord--I am so tired of people who were in the service claiming that they have "intestinal fortitude" and the rest of us do not. Look, buddy, you got in the service because you chose to--it is no more "service" than to be a police officer, a crab fisherman, a miner, or a fire fighter, and it might even be safer. Police officers and fire fighters also put their lives on the line for others--and most of them do not get life long health care and guaranteed pensions. Only if they stay in long enough or live long enough do they get much of anything.

Some of us spend our entire lives in service to others, and we get darned little for it other than scorn. I have spent my life trying to teach people who are nearly illiterate and have no critical thinking skills, but think that they are just all that much better than some "academic," who aren't able to move beyond grunt level jobs because they are nearly illiterate and cannot tell a satiric blog from a serious expert's testimony. I walk on eggshells because of their hyper-inflated egos, trying to get them to learn to have a thesis statement that predicts the shape of the paper, to have topic sentences that tell what a paragraph will be about, to understand the distinction between a claim and evidence, and to support their claims with evidence. About all I get for it is nasty language, manipulative behavior, and self-aggrandizing disdain from twits who spent three to six years serving in a job that they chose to serve in (many who never saw combat) and then spend the rest of their lives pursuing wealth and sneering at the rest of us while we serve our whole lives long with no wealth.

I do respect those who served in combat, and I particularly respect those who came back damaged from that combat and are being badly treated by the VA or who are homeless. But, I don't necessarily "respect" someone simply because they served in the military--many military jobs are less dangerous than mine (as I have to deal with people who are in college on "disability" because they are mentally ill--not a few of them mentally ill former service members--who really just don't like English teachers), and many people were given desk jobs because they had no "intestinal fortitude" either. In fact, those who had desk jobs are the quickest to claim that they saw combat, to flout their service, and to insist on getting "respect."

For your information, it was the military who invaded northern Mexico, the military who invaded Mexico City when the lesser-armed Mexican government wouldn't cede the territory, the military who not metaphorically put a gun to the heads of the Mexican leaders and who forced Mexico to give up their money-making regions for a pittance of a payout. Further, it is the US which decided in the early 20th century to create the drug market by making drugs which had been legal, illegal--and which continues to create the very lucrative market which destabilizes Mexico (which now has little else to create wealth than drugs). It is also the US which for many, many years (up to the Bush II administration) encouraged very poorly educated people to enter the US and work in poor conditions for little money (they make big paychecks for very little work--and I don't know who thinks that all the plumbers and electricians are illegal aliens, because they wouldn't and shouldn't be able to get licensed . . . if you are having a home built by someone who is contracting out to unlicensed workers, you have no one to blame but yourself).

While I do not begrudge members of the service their pensions and health benefits, many of those same veterans are quick to begrudge teachers the pensions that they paid into the teacher retirement system to get and had as part of their contracts a clause which required the state to also pay into that system (though the state didn't and is now trying to renege because they cannot afford to pay even the very few people who last long enough in teaching to draw retirement). It is often people who are veterans (who had job security, step wage increases, and get guaranteed health benefits) who have spearheaded campaigns to do away with tenure so that teachers will be fired just before they would be able to retire with their pensions or so that newbie teachers can be hired at a lower wage (and, yes, tenure is gone in the state where I live). etc. etc. etc.

Veterans have a really good "union" that protects them--long after their few years of service (well, as long as they don't get injured--VA is a different issue), as one doesn't have to do 21 years to get it (and, yes, I've been in grunt-level, poorly paid teaching jobs for far longer than your 21 years). And, veterans do not necessarily have a really good grasp of history and how we managed to get into the situation that we are in now.

Undocumented workers used to be welcomed into the US--for many, many generations--and they did not and do not really understand why it is that things have changed. The US destabilized Mexico; the military is the branch of the government that allowed us to do so. Illegal immigrants do not cost us loads of money, illegal immigrants are not a drain on our economy--and any information to the contrary is being given by people who are very clever with lying via statistics--and it is perfectly fair to point out that we pay an awful lot of money to people who served in the military who are now working fervantly at having everyone else who does government service deprived of their pensions (despite the fact that we paid the money in and that the amount to be contributed by the government has always been figured in as part of our "absurdly high wages").

Here's my wish for you. I hope that you work very hard at getting rid of illegal immigrants (it is my opinion that they should self-deport and come back as documented guest workers and that the children raised in the US who only understand our culture should be given a chance to get citizenship if they go into service--military or civilian--but that's what I'd do). I hope that other veterans work very hard at getting rid of benefits for those who "didn't have intestinal fortitude" to serve in the military, though we spent our lives in other service. And, I hope that other veterans still work very hard at getting unions dismantled because they didn't have the "intestinal fortitude" to serve in the military. And, I hope that a very conservative administration is elected that cuts Social Security and Medicare because they are "socialist."

And, then, I hope that they cut off all benefits to veterans including preferance in government service, who will then wind up working the jobs that the immigrants used to, as a lot of veterans would be getting ready to retire with benefits and they, too, will be fired just before they can retire (just as is happening to teachers today). Because, buddy, after veterans have eliminated all the safety nets for the rest of us--you won't have anyone complaining when yours is cut too. Enjoy.

Some republicans are pathetic I see some of the same posters that defended the citizenship rights of the murderous bastard Obama took out in a foreign country plotting against our nation and soldiers. They were up in arms that we did not capture him and give him all his rights to a trial because after all he was an American citizen. Now some of those same posters would deport a child who is innocent of any crime and is in fact a US citizen, but they would happily deny them their rights by just pretending they are not a citizen.

Bean, as a liberal military guy who just said I don't deserve a pension after 20 years, I have to say you made some sweeping generalizations. In my perfect world, military would get a higher pay (I already make 6 figures which is great) but zero benefits unless they were wounded or disabled (these are roughly 70K/year right now for me, resulting in a taxpayer cost of almost 200K per annum).

You, as a teacher, would have a few years to figure things out, then you would be rated on your performance. This is super-hard to do, since the current systems in place encourage test-teaching.

I don't know the answer, but there are a lot of junior enlisted guys who made 30K per year and gave their lives and limbs for us. There are also a lot of moochers in the military. I don't know really how to deal with this, but I do know that Mexicans working 10hrs per day in the sun are not to blame.

Super, how would you propose to change a country whose young men are incentivized by the multi-billion dollar US drug demand? How would you propose to a young man that he should work for $2 per hour rather than smuggle cocaine to the US for $100K/2.2 lb increments?

How would you propose solving this problem? I think you'll never, ever run out of desperate young men willing to make it big, but I could be wrong!

Tell me what you would do? Death penalty? They already have that bud. What else?

what i would do? i would make it a criminal offense to be here (make them fear coming here) they have none right now. crack down on benefits giving out and food banks giving to these illegals, have police put the home depots people in jail, and revoke citezship for marrying US citizens. Cool, and the actual criminals don't care at all given the financial incentives I described above, but you'd cut back on the fruit pickers quite effectively. Consider that a win if you've no scruples about harming the US economy and hurting a lot of men who are more brave and noble than you. Ok... This kid says the anchor babies are the kids he sits next to in class and they are the ones he meets at the mall. This is the RESULT of not handling this problem a long time ago. The Brasero program was stopped and this is what we end up with. I don't see any good in sending these families back to Mexico. They are here and some members are citizens. They lucked out in that respect, but they have to live every day watching out for "The Man." The should not be here but they are and that is a fact on the ground. Fix the future since we cannot humanely fix the past, and the powers that be must be held responsible for the cheapening of our immigration laws.

That's the point supersmooth it is not for me to define citizenship, I don't think people should enter our country illegally, I don't condone that, but citizenship is defined by our constitution, it's not up to me, it is not a states right issue, it is not a jurisdictional issue, it is already defined in the big C. Wow, how does U.S. jurisdiction mean born to U.S. citizens? You apparently do not have a firm grasp of the enlish language.

By the way...most of the people who are so against illegals probably wouldn't qualify to get in this country legally nowadays other than being born here.     Supersmooth3, you may respect and obey laws, but you, like every American citizen, has at one point and time in their lives broken a law. For example, have you ever driven over the speed limit? Speed limits are laws, whether you admit it or not.

    I also doubt you know much (if anything) about those who hire migrants to pick fields. I doubt you can find 50 people who are willing to do unglorifying work in inhospitable weather hours a day for pay that barely supports a family (if at all). Perhaps for a few days or weeks, but very few if any Americans would ever consider working like that for months or years on end.

    Finally, you would make people "fear" coming here? Be thankful those before us didn't feel that way or we would not be the country we are today. Making people fear our country is to turn us into an isolationist country, something that would destroy our economy and our way of life. Before posting, perhaps you should take more effort to think your comments through and consider every action you mentioned instead of believing your ideas are the answers that will "save" our country.

    If the children of illegal aliens who were not born in the US (and therefore citizens) want to be angry at someone for their plight they should be mad at their parents. By denying rewards to illegals hoping to get a better life for their children it will discourage others from coming over to play this loser's game.

    Should the parents be caught and sent back to wherever they came from and the children are minors, well, they have a decision to make.

    Sorry, but it isn't my fault, it's their parents. Let the parents assume responsibility for the decision they made that affected their children's lives.

    I dont have a problem fixing our immiration problem. The problem I have is why are we just focused on Mexico I dont see nobody kicking in the doors in china towns across the United States or any other race or entnic groups being single out.     I'm pretty sure Obama has finally realized there is no making nice with the GOP party any longer. I'm glad he has finally reconized this fact.     I would have to agree with Bachmann. For illegal immigrants who can't vote, or collect SS they sure are getting valuable face time from the media. I mean where have you seen illegal immigrants getting more consideration than those that try to come here legally? It's shocking the audacity of the democratic party. I guess following laws doesn't apply to them unless they know that something is in it for them.

    I come from immigrant parents and I am a minority. I think it is fair to say that the democratic party doesn't speak for all of us. I am apalled that people who try to come here legally( already obeying our laws) are given less consideration than those that snuck in.     It's hard to point out stupidity and inhumanity to people who are so emotionally invested in the morally black and white jingoism that our current political climate breeds. Political TV has trained them to see all immigrants as a separate species, and the illegal variety as less than human. It's impossible to reason with people who are brainwashed to that degree. Point out that many of these kids have never known anything else or that they didn't even know that they were even in the country illegally, and they simply yell back "ILLEGAL" as if that, in and of itself, is a valid argument, ignoring the actual reality of the situation. It's the debate style of an elementary school child, and we all know how difficult it is to make elementary school kids see reason when they get their feet dug in.

    There are a lot of angry people posting here. I'm ex-military; served four years and got out, no pension. I'm proud of my service and those who were with me. For an embittered school teacher to go on, as the one above whose name I've blotted from memory, about how our vets that served their 20 are overpaid pension wise and over-served on the medical front.., well, I suspect he never saw the inside of a VA hospital and never stood watch on the borders of this empire. Teachers have it tough, a lot of folks have it tough, including military retirees. We need ideas here, ways to set things right - illegal immigration included - , not endless crap slinging. If you're not working toward the solution, you are definitely part of the problem.

    Raul, no one is singling out Mexicans. The issue is about any and all illegal aliens, and why the rest of us must support them. I myself am an immigrant, but our family entered this country legally. I pay more taxes than 97 percent of the population, and am not about to pay a penny more so that those who came in illegally can receive free benefits. I worked hard and paid my dues legally to get where I am.

    I have a child attending UC Berkeley, and tuition there has risen 40%+ the last 2 years. Classes are being cut, and admissions reduced because the State of California is on the verge of insolvency. Yet, our loony Governor and spendthrift state legislature thought it was a good idea to pass the Dream Act so that illegal aliens can receive free benefits while the rest of us citizens and legal immigrants suffered and paid. Why? Because it's not fair to deny children of illegals who have been here for such a long time?

    Then why aren't we enforcing the immigration laws so that those children and their parents are deported before they settle in? Aren't we doing those children a disservice by allowing them to stay for so long that they forget their home country or their mother tongue. Why shouldn't school districts be screening for illegal aliens? Any other country would do those things.

    The reason the U.S government won't do it is all about money. Businesses need cheap slave labor, and the politicians receive campaign money from those businesses. So the politicians turn a blind eye to the matter, and as usual, the tax payers get saddled with the bill.

    If we need farm workers to pick the crops, we should extend migrant visas to foreign workers so that they can enter and work here legally. They can be paid proper wages and pay taxes just like the rest of us. When their visas expire, they can return to their home countries or seek a legal path to become citizens. It's a simple solution, but apparently too simple for our corrupt and stupid polticians to comprehend,

    Better yet, Pete. Why don't we punish those who hire illegal people? Seems like that would be a logical place to start since they aren't going anywhere. Illegals usually travel light and carry no identification, but businesses have to register, etc., etc. Looks like maybe we want the same thing. The difference is that I don't hate people for wanting to better themselves. From what I've seen and heard, most of these folks work harder and longer hours than most here are willing to do. And it's only a hate issue because those on the right choose it to be. They have no clue as to what happens when someone is detained for illegal immigration. They don't just march them to the border and throw them across. It's very costly to keep all of these people locked up until their fate is determined. Seems like a waste of money to me. Like I said, turn off the spigot and the water stops flowing.

There was no formal name but many of the ideas the party was founded on were used to organize demonstrations across the country.       There is nothing hysterical about believing in following the law. There is nothing extremist about following the law.

      The Obama administration has deported a record number of ILLEGAL immigrants.

      It is scary how dim witted some liberals are regarding the law.

      Civil society requires we live by the law. If you want a different outcome, change the law.

      What most of us are more than tired of is an administration with zero solutions except to spend more of our money for their pet causes. Out here in CA our governor signed a new law providing for law breaking non-citizens to take citizens spots in the colleges that we taxpayers pay for.

      It is sickening to me to see our own kids and taxpayers disrespected by liberal politicians pandering to illegals.

      There are lots of people who say they believe in folowing the law. But they apply that to illegal immigrants, but not to themselves. The Fourteenth Amendment, Section 1 says, "Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

      The Fourteenth Amendment is the Law of the Land. Unless it is repealed or itself amended, it stands. You do not get to pick and choose which laws you want to enforce and which you wish to ignore. So trying to follow Alabama's bizarre interpretation of laws while ignoring the Fourteenth Amendment is legally bankrupt and doomed to failure.

      The law specifically says that all people within the jurisdiction of the Federal government, which includes not only citizens, but non-citizens and even people in bonded territories, such as Puerto Rico, and the American Virgin Islands, as well as those on US Embassy grounds and military bases in foreign countries.       How many illegal children attend U.S. schools? Estimates top 1.5-2.5 million. Factor in birth costs, medical costs for birth defect children, special needs, schooling and lunch programs. Do the math!

      An estimated 400,000 to 1,200,000 babies are born in the United States every year to illegal immigrant parents. Those babies receive automatic U.S. citizenship. If citizenship is to have true meaning, someone with no allegiance to the United States should not be able to lay claim to it on behalf of their offspring.

      Incarcerated convicted illegal aliens make up 29 percent of federal, state and local prisons at a cost of $1.6 billion annually.

      As the financial costs grow, few speak about job losses and wages depressed for America's working poor. They head to the unemployment lines, soup kitchens, homelessness and food stamps.

      Do not forget the middle class! They suffer job losses in roofing, dry walling, construction, cab driving, landscape, house painting, paving and restaurant work.

      No one escapes the ravages of illegal migration. Ask yourself this question. With 20 million migrants doing THIS much damage, what happens to American workers and communities when we add another 10 or 20 million more illegal aliens into our country?

        What the law says is that any person is entitled to due process and the states cannot make laws that deny due process.

        The children of illegals who were brought here as small children have been raised as Americans. They are here through no fault of their own. They broke no law. We have invested in these children and they should be given the chance to contribute fully to American society. The first step would be green cards. If they meet the requirements, citizenship should follow. If deportation is the GOP's idea of conservative compassion, it's pretty meager.

        The truth is that illegals do the jobs we won't do, and are often exploited. They put up with it for the chance to make a better life for their kids. They are not bad people for the most part, just desperate.

        States which are carrying a heavy burden should be assisted by the feds. The root causes of this problem are being neglected. People will stay in Mexico if there is a reason to do so rather than risk life and limb crossing the border. Fences and walls won't work, although they may kill more people.

        Our demand for drugs and weak enforcement of gun laws have contributed to the trouble in Mexico. We have an obligation to help deal with those problems.

        Given that we have millions of real Americans in this country without jobs, without healthcare, without adequate shelter, and given that we have a limited amount of time and resources to help these citizens, can someone give me a rational, intelligent reason why some of our Congressmen/women should be directing efforts that benefit illegals rather than concentrating their efforts on aiding their legal constituents? When I lost my job in 2001, a friend told me to try my local county government because they were hiring. So I went to their webpage, but didn't qualify for any of the jobs. I didn't have the necessary education or experience for about 25% of these (e.g., law enforcement), and I could understand that. But for the other 75%, I had everything required but for one, I wasn't bi-lingual. So here I was, a citizen, having served in the US military, paying taxes in my own county that would not hire me because I did not speak the language of people here illegally. By the way, my county is heavily GOP, so this is not just a DEM issue. And no, I am not making this up. We need to take care of Americans first.

            Has a point. I was a believer in being flexible on immigration until college 1n 1993. I came home to my apartment late night at 2:00 am after working all night graduate school...and found the door security chained and an entire family sleeping on the living room floor. My good friend and roomate it turned out, without my permission, had given haven to his cousin whos husband ran away back to his own country and left her here pregnant. She was in "hiding" for another couple of months until she had the baby so it could become a citizen and she could stay. Don't get me wrong people, I am still friends with this guy and his family and they work harder and contribute more than many 2nd and third generation Americans. However, for every story like this there are single mothers with kids who do not. Worst of all people, my taxes as soon as I got out of school and started working had to support the kid, with my college debts and all. It is ignorant and unfair to not ask me if I was willing to sponsor my roomates cousin and her decision. My grandparents were born here in America in 1917 and worked their entire lives to raise kids and never asked the government for anything. My parents did the same. My other grandfather immigrated and came through Ellis island, and told me himself before he died: This is the best country on earth, and they let me in here, but remember this my grandson: "This country is not for free and you must work for it. No one owes you anything. You must be generous when the time calls for it and lend a hand if asked, and volunteer if you can, BUT you must be stern in your decisions as well. Otherwise, people will take advantage of you and your generosity, and you will not reap what you have worked so hard to sow. This is why I left my home country."

            Glen::: My mother's aunt came through Ellis Island. She became a teacher-- taught for years-- and also was in the healthcare field.

            I'm glad you mentioned that about volunteering. I know of people who have retired from a government job but are still young enough to retire-- but they feel they are above that. Me, I wouldn't give up my volunteering for anything. I am 77 years young but have a couple of good years left in me. I have been a volunteer for 20+ years, ever since my husband passed away. All those years have been volunteering for the veterans.

He used his position to guide kids in need to live with them, not to help the kids but to gain a healthy state paycheck. They are greedy and no where near my definition of Christian.                 When parents commit a crime I say punish their kids, sooner or later these kids will learn that it is they who must prevent their parents from committing crimes.                                 The Statue of Liberty has shoulders doesn't it? To me that means that there is a limit to anything and everything.                                 And Dave, your'e correct about history, but so is Bachman. Immigration in the 1850s wasn't regulated (unlike now). Therefore, comparing "legality" in two vastly different eras is moot. When a law exists and you choose to break it, you are still a criminal. If there's no law on the books, you can't be a criminal regarding the action/inactivity. Clearly, illegal immigration has a legal definition and social/moral need for adherance.

                                  Neither parent is here on US soil legally and only came here to give birth to have an anchor or claim. The 14 th Amendment is their only to protect Indians and slaves along with their offspring the right to citizenship nothing else and for no other reason. Other nationals including Chinese are now coming here just to have anchor babies which IMHO is pure BS.

                                  If the 14th Amendment isn't enforced the way it was intended it will be possible for a foreign country to invade without firing a shot. This country has be abused in every possible way and it is time for this to stop. Though I have little in common in Bachmann and her views I believe she is right on this one.

                                  Bottom line is that Mexican's are subjects of Mexico and not the US so why shouldn't their offspring be subjects of Mexico. They are here illegally so they should just GO HOME AND STAY THERE!!!

                                  How many men and women were born to immigrants legal and illegal over the years in this country and we afforded citizenship on the sole basis that they were born on US soil, it has never been interpreted in the manner you describe, because it is not, and never will be a matter of jurisdiction, if you are born on US soil you are a US citizen period. It would take a constitutional amendment to change that fact.

                                  It's not that simple. The citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment was to overturn the Dred Scott opinion and grant slaves citizenship but not for Indians. They were not subject to the jurisdiction of the US. That was corrected in the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924.

                                  Subject to US jurisdiction means you are accountable to our laws. Indians in 1865 were not since the tribes were considered sovereign nations. Children of diplomats are still not considered American citizens even if born here, because the diplomat is subject to his or her own countries laws not ours. An illegal immigrant is still subject to our laws. Unlike the law governing diplomats or the Indian nations, illegal immigrants are just that, illegal not immune. Therefore illegal immigrants are still subject to our laws which is why we can detain, fine, and deport them. If they weren't subject to US jurisdiction we wouldn't have the right to do so.

                                  And I would temper your demand for a "strict interpretation" as doing so would nullify the doctrine of incorporation since it's nowhere to be found in the 14th Amendment. That means you have no First through Eighth Amendment rights unless your state has its own parallel law.

                                  First off, No politician is advocating revoking citizenship or deporting a US citizen regardless of their parents immigration status. The children being discussed are children born in another country (Mexico) whose parents brought them here as babies and young children. Essentially illegal immigrants raised here by their illegal parents. So any discussion of deporting Senator Rubio is pure fallacy and shows the ignorance of any person who tries to claim it. Second to Ford Man. Do you realize that more than a third of this countries land was once part of Mexico. In addition many of the people that lived in those areas became Americans overnight in 1848.                                     The anchor baby is legally a US Citizen under the constitution, and perhaps that is something that needs be changed-Did you all miss the articles last week on the industry of having wealthy foreigners come here to "lodge" and have their needs catered to while they wait for their babies to born on American soil? This means that they well have the money and resources and even the education to go about proper American citizenship, but they are choosing to "be a tourist" during their last trimester to insure that their babies are born as Americans and have access to all the rights and priveleges of American citizens. The articles further stated that they take these children back to the country of the parent's origin until the child is old enough to benefit from our colleges and universities or until their is a health need. That is another abuse of the concept of native born American Citizen, not what was originally intended to be protected by our government. Yes, the children are citizens, so let them be American citizens and be raised by legal citizens to fulfill their responsibilities to their country as well as to take of the advantages.

One Friday they didn't show up to prepare a section I needed done for Monday and when I asked the GC what was going on, he told me they had been deported but not to worry because they would be back Monday and sure enough they where. I asked them about it and they said yes they got deported to Mexico the closest border which was cool with them because we worked in New Port Beach, 2 1/2 hours from the border. In order to turn them in you have to know who, where and when so INS can find them. I did what I could to help. ARE YOU? I was hoping that by moving to Ohio, I wouldn't have to deal with illegal's taking my and my wife's work from us but that's not the case. I was asked to take a 15% an hour cut so our cost would be more competitive with companies hiring illegals. THIS BS NEEDS TO STOP! The President also received a copy of this. When are we going to start Protecting American's Jobs? There's is a fraise you can use on your next campaign. Protection American's Jobs, Mr. President

                                      I think they are talking about the children that are already here, not the ones that havent arrived yet. There are too many to who have never known any other way, we just can't penalize them for what their parrents did. We can however beef up our borders and stop it from happening again, but even as I type, they are reducing border patrol on the Canada side.

                                      I really don't think there are that many Canadians rushing to move here, at least not desperately enough to jump the border to get the same things they can up north. Besides, the US-Canadian Border is the longest border between two countries and it would take alot of tax dollars to guard the southern border alone. You may think the good ole USA is the center of the world, but we're only a country among many and there are other countries that have the same qualities as we do.
