DES MOINES, Iowa—The two candidates who least frequently visit Iowa are currently leading in the race to win the state's January caucuses, the new Des Moines Register poll showed Saturday evening.
Former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain leads the Republican presidential field in the Hawkeye State, narrowly surpassing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for the top spot, according to the poll conducted this past week.
The highly regarded Iowa Poll shows Cain with 23 percent and Romney at 22 percent among likely caucus-goers ahead of Jan. 3's caucuses, the first nominating contest of the 2012 cycle. Cain has seen his stock rise by 13 percentage points since the last edition of the poll; Romney only dropped one percent despite the fact that neither candidate has visited Iowa more than once since the weekend of August 12th.
The advantage for Cain and Romney seems unusual in a state that typically prides itself on retail politics.
"Iowans seem to be saying 'we've tried politicians, it's time to shift gears and try a CEO to run our country.' The more desperate our country's financial situation, the more voters are looking for someone from the business world who can turn this ship around," said Steve Grubbs, Cain's Iowa state chairman.
As a matter of comparison, Romney led the field — at 29 percent - to former Arkansas governor and eventual caucus-winner Mike Huckabee's 12 percent in the October 2007 edition of the same poll.
Texas Rep. Ron Paul places third in the Register’s poll, with 12 percent, followed by Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann at 8 percent, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry tied at 7 percent, former Sen. Rick Santorum at 5 percent, and finally former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman at 1 percent.
The Iowa Poll suggests a slight shift within the margin-of-error in the race for Iowa's caucuses since the NBC News/Marist poll was conducted at the beginning of the month. Romney led at 23 percent to Cain's 20 percent in that poll, conducted Oct. 3-5.

Bachmann, who is staking her campaign on Iowa, has dropped 14 percentage points since June and into fourth place. This news comes after winning the Ames Straw Poll and spending a lot of time in the state, including recently expanding her staff here.
"Poll numbers have bounced up and down on weekly, sometimes daily basis. We’ll see much more of that before caucus night but one thing I’m convinced of is that Michele Bachmann will come out on top in on Jan. 3," said Bachmann's Iowa campaign manager Eric Woolson.
It has been four months since the Register released its last poll. The June poll had Romney leading in the state with 23 percent—just in front of Bachmann, who jumped in the race two days after the poll came out, at 22 percent. Perry had yet to throw his hat in the ring.
Though Perry joined the race just over two months ago, both he and his wife, Anita, have made quite a few trips here, yet Perry is tied for fifth place with Gingrich.
Perhaps the most disappointing showing, at least in terms of time spent in Iowa, has to be for the former Pennsylvania senator, Santorum. He will be the only candidate to visit all of Iowa’s 99 counties as of Wednesday, but still remains at the bottom of the poll.
The Register’s poll was based on telephone interviews Oct. 23-26 with 400 likely Republican caucus-goers, and has a margin of error plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

The overwhelming majority of federal income taxes are paid by the very highest income earners. The top 1% of income earners pay about 32% of all income taxes. The top 5% pays 51.4%. The top 10% of high income earners, pay 63.5%. The top 20% of income earners pays 78% of all federal income taxes.
The bottom 80% pay only 20% of the burden. Now, how in the world can anybody with a brain come forth and say, "I am against tax cuts for the rich. I'm only going to have a tax cut for the middle class." If you give a tax cut to people in the bottom 20%, you're not going to stimulate anything. They're not paying any taxes anyway!!!
I was a christian till I read the Bible and I was a Republican till I checked the facts, Reagan began artificially stimulating our economy by debt spending and now that's all Republicans want to do, driving us into a Greek state. Tax cuts to millionaires doubled our debt during Reagan's term and put our nation on course to Bankruptcy. It's not to late to put down the Reagan kool-aid and get back to real prosperity with Common sense spending and a tax structure that will match it.

Under Obama, Americans have paid less tax than under any other president, in recent history; you don't like that?
The "Obama tax cuts" you're talking about are from bush who i didn't particularly like, while income taxes did not change business taxes have risen as well as fuel taxes. We pay more, it's just sneakier

Common sense like the one Clinton gave us, like the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1993 that raise tax on the top 1.2% and gave tax cuts to 90% of all businesses and gave us 8 years of economic growth while bring our debt down, clear enough?
Care, Presidents do not have a vote on tax policy, only members of Congress do. Congress also is the branch of government that sets spending priorities, such as the current Republican House passing a 'grant' of millions of dollars to Exxon to encourage them to drill for more oil. Exxon, by the way, just reported $10 billion in earnings for the last quarter - that's $11 million per day!

That's the first thing that comes out of her mouth when addressing the media is that she won the Iowa straw poll and now the polls have her running at the back of the pack. Poor Michelle, what is she to do? What I hope she does is continues to run and continue to spilt the GOP wider and wider in two.
She has spent more time, in Iowa than any other candidateother than maybe Santorum,who shares the polling cellar with her; No suprise that familiarity breeds contempt, with those two.

Serendiphany, The blackmail was either Obama signed the extension of the Bush tax cuts or the Republicans would not extend unemployment benefits for the millions of Americans who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own.
For the Gop hopefuls Iowa is the make or break state; whether they are good enough for a ticket to have a shot at the whitehouse is decided here.

It's an open secret that - despite being a poorly community organizer and a first-term senator - Obama managed to elevate his almost non-existent standing in soceity to be on par with the likes of a former first lady or Vietnam war veterant just by neat tricks: get the endorsement of prominent American leaders and..of course..downgrade your opponents to a peasant or a moronic level. There they languish their miserable political life. Some of Obama's opponents knew only too well how effective Obama could be; they have yet to recover, or fully, from his handiwork.
For Arab Spring revolution, he learned a thing or two from Chairman Mao Tse Tung about using the 'Red Guards' to his adavantage. (All Arab leaders, whether kings or sultans or crown princes need to be in the good book of President Obama if they want to continue to live - let alone rule).
For American politics, Obama looks set to win another four years hands down if he employs the same tactics. (I don't want to come out and say the operative word which I am sure you all already know).
I have often said (written) Obama got elected as president due to Bill Gate and Msnbc's help.
Although these people didn't directly cause Obama to be favored by the American voters per se, their employees did. More or less.
Although the likes of Keith Olberman of Obama snake oil fame, had left for less taxing and more lucrative job elsewhere, I hope, the 2008 presidential veterans are able and ready to reprise their roles as the front-line slashers and burners for Obama.
Another equally vital group of young and old that Obama should not forget (and he didn't) and they are growing steadily, is the American liberals or leftists.
Judging by the almost phenomenon bashing of the Republican party, their leaders or even anyone just being GOP supporters, on this panel, it seems Obama has already called his Maoist 'Red Guards' to battle stations.
Michele Bachmann or other GOP hopefuls, if you're reading this post. Continue to read, again and again. Chances are it will help you or help someone to understand the gravity of your 2012 problems and the man the cause of.

Obama's big mistake was thinking that by meeting with the Republican leadership, he and they together could work to solve America's problems. Unfortunately, he failed to realize that to Republicans, Obama, not unemployment, a tanked economy or anything else, is the only problem they want to deal with.
I think Obama has now realized that when going into a knife fight it is good to have the biggest knife. And from where I sit, the Republican would rather fight than work to help a struggling America.

These blogs are sad, and funny at the same time. Both sides villify the tea party, and occupy wallstreet movements. These movements agree about being against the bailouts, and corrupt gov`t. They both are upset about the destruction of the middle class, and unfair trade deals. Both sides are upset about the 1%, but have different ideas about how to approach it. Personally I would like the gov`t to make some kind of change in tax law that really rewards job creaters, and penalizes people that don`t.
Glad to see people really paying more attention to politics considering our situation. First off Obama, and Bush both sucked! Mccain would not have been a whole lot better. Our candidates on both sides are bought, and paid for before they are even the candidate. Look at the BIG PUSH FOR ROMNEY/PERRY. NOW CAIN. The best candidate by far is Ron Paul. There would be no tea party if not for him, and he also agrees with a lot of the occupy wallstreet movement. He is against the offensive wars Bush, and Obama started. In favor of tariffs, and elimination of the income tax on everybody.
Cain is a possibility BUT I AM NOT THRILLED TO HERE HE SERVED ON THE FEDERAL RESERVE, BUT THAT WAS IN THE 80`S. THE 999 SEEMS IT WOULD HIT THE MIDDLE CLASS, AND POOR IN HIGH TAX STATES BAD! If he tweaked it say first 20-30K exempt it would work.No mortgage deduction now would really hurt real estate now. His low corporate tax probably would increase hiring tremendously.

I am for Cain because he put forth a PLAN. Sure, it wasn't the best but he agreed to improve on it.
