Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain campaigns outside of Kinnick stadium in Iowa City, Iowa, on Oct. 22.
DES MOINES, Iowa—The two candidates who least frequently visit Iowa are currently leading in the race to win the state's January caucuses, the new Des Moines Register poll showed Saturday evening.
Former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain leads the Republican presidential field in the Hawkeye State, narrowly surpassing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for the top spot, according to the poll conducted this past week.
The highly regarded Iowa Poll shows Cain with 23 percent and Romney at 22 percent among likely caucus-goers ahead of Jan. 3's caucuses, the first nominating contest of the 2012 cycle. Cain has seen his stock rise by 13 percentage points since the last edition of the poll; Romney only dropped one percent despite the fact that neither candidate has visited Iowa more than once since the weekend of August 12th.
The advantage for Cain and Romney seems unusual in a state that typically prides itself on retail politics.
"Iowans seem to be saying 'we've tried politicians, it's time to shift gears and try a CEO to run our country.' The more desperate our country's financial situation, the more voters are looking for someone from the business world who can turn this ship around," said Steve Grubbs, Cain's Iowa state chairman.
As a matter of comparison, Romney led the field — at 29 percent - to former Arkansas governor and eventual caucus-winner Mike Huckabee's 12 percent in the October 2007 edition of the same poll.
Texas Rep. Ron Paul places third in the Register’s poll, with 12 percent, followed by Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann at 8 percent, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry tied at 7 percent, former Sen. Rick Santorum at 5 percent, and finally former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman at 1 percent.
The Iowa Poll suggests a slight shift within the margin-of-error in the race for Iowa's caucuses since the NBC News/Marist poll was conducted at the beginning of the month. Romney led at 23 percent to Cain's 20 percent in that poll, conducted Oct. 3-5.
Iowa campaign embed Alex Moe talks about the new Des Moines Register poll that has the two candidates who rarely come to the Hawkeye State in the lead.
Bachmann, who is staking her campaign on Iowa, has dropped 14 percentage points since June and into fourth place. This news comes after winning the Ames Straw Poll and spending a lot of time in the state, including recently expanding her staff here.
"Poll numbers have bounced up and down on weekly, sometimes daily basis. We’ll see much more of that before caucus night but one thing I’m convinced of is that Michele Bachmann will come out on top in on Jan. 3," said Bachmann's Iowa campaign manager Eric Woolson.
It has been four months since the Register released its last poll. The June poll had Romney leading in the state with 23 percent—just in front of Bachmann, who jumped in the race two days after the poll came out, at 22 percent. Perry had yet to throw his hat in the ring.
Though Perry joined the race just over two months ago, both he and his wife, Anita, have made quite a few trips here, yet Perry is tied for fifth place with Gingrich.
Perhaps the most disappointing showing, at least in terms of time spent in Iowa, has to be for the former Pennsylvania senator, Santorum. He will be the only candidate to visit all of Iowa’s 99 counties as of Wednesday, but still remains at the bottom of the poll.
The Register’s poll was based on telephone interviews Oct. 23-26 with 400 likely Republican caucus-goers, and has a margin of error plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

I know that the farmers of Iowa raise a lot of Hogs and here in Wisconsin we raise a lot of cows for milk, but can they be that much more stupid than the farmers in Wisconsin. Well, we have Walker so maybe we both need an education and don't make anymore stupid mistakes!
we'll see what happens come election time. Right now Republicans are the only ones in the news because they are the only ones picking a candidate. But Democrats have won the last 5 out of 6 elections in Iowa. The year they didn't was by like 1%.
It is still early. I like how the polls are shaping up though. I would have Newt above Romney, but below Cain and Paul...pretty close to my mindset. Of course the libs are going to get all whiny about them haha. I think they know that one of these folks will be their next President!
Actually, I think they know that NONE of them is remotely electable in a general election. Romney, maybe, but people like you are going to make sure he doesn't get nominated.
I'll bet you are way wrong Faith. O'bama looks electable to you? hahah
The Republicans are going to end up feeling so damn stupid if they end up nominating Cain...
I don't care what happens in Iowa. They voted for Obama first the last time too. Whoopie. Like I care what happens in Iowa. After they picked Obama, I lost all respect. Iowans have a habit of picking people with absolutely no experience to run a country.
Don't forget that Michelle Bachmann won the Iowa straw poll. Oh boy.
This is for Cougar. If you're a thirty-year-old lawyer, where did you go to law school? I want to make sure that my own children by-pass that particular institution, as you cannot spell crap and your grammar is unbelievably bad!!! Have news for you, Cougar. You'll NEVER hear from a millionaire with your lack of a basic education. What a hoot!
Maybe they should just pick corn, ... course that's over most of their head's, too!
According to the stories I have seen Ron Paul won both and Romney didn't even have much of a showing in one garnering a whopping 1% in one and 0% in the other. Kinda bad when they don't even tell the truth on their website here.
Someone finally realized that the more you understand a Republican candidate, the less you like 'em... sooo... to lead the field-of-follies you have to NOT be there!
Maybe they should leave the country during their national campaign? It could work! They all look great from afar... VERY afar. LOL
Performance, you should be banned from forum for your hateful post.
Pity that the idea of a having a black man or woman in authority over you rankles your soul. You are a neanderthal.
Well lemur lady, they better have a good watermelon party.
And don't forget the KFC.
lol...
performance396 Comment collapsed by the community
Collapsing comment is NOT ENOUGH! Banning would be more appropriate. Even if limited banning. And REMOVE that comment now!!!
Is this the best that the GOP can do? Cain wants to raise taxes on the poor and middle class so he and the rest of the rich can pay even less taxes.
Romney wants to let home foreclosures run their course after taking a bunch of money from Wall Street.
Perry wants to kill Social Security after I paid into it for 30 years.
Can't they find a single candidate that has the best interests of the majority of Americans in mind?
I wasn't going to vote for Obama, but I need better choices than the GOP is offering!
Both JerseyGirl1947 and lemur lady have been reported for being hateful to me.

Iz a guud n!ggah. dontz evahz fo-get dat.
lol...
performance396,
I see you even voted for your own post.... real class act, you are! Sounds like your 396 is in need of an overhaul... kinda smokin and sputtering fowl odors.
Someone said,,, "Republicans will feel stupid nominating Cain"
I think the Dems and the nation was Dupped into voting for Obama... the nation is NOT better off now.. let someone with a plan try.
I agree with Iowa, we have given politicians a chance and they have failed. Time to put a CEO in as President. Cain is interesting, although he may have a hard battle getting his 999 voted through. And Romney made a career of fixing companies with problems and making them good again, hopefully he could do the same for the US. All I know is the politicians are failing us. We need a president that can start to bridge the divide between the parties. Whoever seems to be the best for that role will be the one I vote for.
Obama will win hands down in 2012. Even the Koch bought ads will not stop people with common sense.
Getting a repug to compromise will tilt the earth of it's axis! Obama is the only way to go. No president could change and heal the country after 8 yrs of Bush in just one term. The GOP candidate's and the idiots in congress have pledged him a one term President. They will not be happy until they choose a puppet who will remember what the Koch's told them! In WI we are recalling Walker and crooner's, and now before legislation he is changing the rules for recall. Don't worry, we will succeed in getting the dictator out!! Cain's has not yet got his act together except to lobby for tobacco and a 999 which he "thinks" is good, maybe for the 1%.
I have to agree with you weemee, maybe President Obama isn't doing everything eactly like how I would like but hey, he's trying to do a good job and its more than I can say for the repub candidates or the guy we had from them before President Obama became president and inherited the mess he left. If Romney wasn't good enough for them when McCain won the nomination, then what would make him better now. Bachmann, and Perry are just out there too far in right field to even think about voting for them and now Cain, who dosen't need to know foreign policy(?) and who is just another flash in the pizza pan for them won't make it either. Too many loose, loose ends on him, 9, 9, 9, tax and no need to know foreign policy won't get him voted in. Now as far as the rest like Newt and Santorum, whew, they don't even interest the repubes let alone the rest of the nation. Then the guys they did have, Huntsman and Ron Paul who I thought just might be good candidates until Paul said a few stupid things about giving that terrorist his rights and put him on trial? Well actually I do like the way President Obama did it, no wasted tax dollars and its a done deal, but going back to the candidates, I'm thinking Ron Paul and Huntsmen must not of pleased the Koch bros. so they don't want them if they aren't going to work with them. They must actually be good candidates and want whats good for all of American and not just the Koch Bros. like the rest of the repubes and tp's. Too bad they won't be running, unless they see that the other ones don't have a chance at all and they sneak them in the last few months of the campagne? See thats possible but I'm thinking that the Koch Bros. think they would be the same as having a dem. in there, so they won't allow them to run. Otherwise they would be letting them be heard now. Obama in 2012. There just is no substitue for him right now. But he's good and I think he will even be more effective when the tp's are voted out of the senate and congress. Can you even imagine what would of happened to the country had McCain and Palin won? Hey theres a candidate for the repubs, Palin. LMFAO
It'll be interesting to see who delegates decide to give their vote to come nomination time, we'll see.
Someone really needs to ask this. What the hell happened to the GOP? I've been around a while, and I don't remember ever seeing such a sorry and unelectable pack of crazies running for the republican nomination for President. The campaign funds they are collecting would be better spent on "group therapy". President Obama will run over any one of them as effectively as a wrecking ball destroying a "Mississippi outhouse".
Excellent point. The current sorry state of the GOP is is due to the fact it is running off its traditional voter base of moderates (like me) and it's substituting us with the right wing lunatic fringe. It's shameful.
I'm confused?
I was told republicans were racist, yet Cain is leading?
I was also told Republicans are bunch of Christians nuts who won't vote for a Mormon, yet Romney is either second or maybe first in the Iowa poll?
Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think Iowa has a lot of Blacks or Mormons, so is it possible white Christians support these two guys?
That can't be, because that would mean everything the liberals have been telling me is B.S.
The Huckabee reference from the "same" poll four years ago arguably isn't apples to apples. Four years ago, we weren't looking at a caucus during the New Year hangover. The next three weeks are a critical time for these campaigns.
What campaigns? To me, and so many I talk to, it is a Comedy Central ACT!
And Obama has his record to get him re-elected.
RDG6: Obama's record will sink him. His record is of failure and socialist agenda. 4 more years of Obama will make the US bankrupt and probably in revolution.
His record is more right wing than Nixon, eRagan and Bush Sr-maybe you should turn off Fox and listen to real news.
worldpoop: If Obama is "right wing", I'm the Pope, but I bet you're still going to vote for him again aren't you??
He was surprisingly centrist though. I remember all the adds portraying him as "America's most liberal senator." He came out with a different approach and tried to force both sides to work together on several bills. And yes, asking a republican to add something republican to the Health Care Reform ACT is somewhat of a paradox, but he did try. Even with a super majority he tried to engage the other side. he did to, I believe, to show the people just how much and how long he tried before becoming the new aggressive Obama. He came in a democrat but not hyper-partisan. I think, trying to show the people how level-headed, restrained, and reasonable he is and With the very far right showing up in force this season, that may just be the right way to go..
Your Eminence: Yes we will. ;-)
PEOPLE ASSUME (and you know what happens next) ...
... that poll numbers equal caucus votes. Not necessarily true. This is why the pros talk so much about the Iowa "ground game". The strategy is not to have the biggest overall poll numbers; no, the strategy is to get those diehard committed voters to show up and caucus for YOU.
Herman Cain is the Right Wing attempt to paint black people as illegitimate and inferior in thought all the while pandering to the Republican base. Herman Cain is bought and paid for. He is fulfilling his mission, "Save our image from being the racist party Herman. We'll make you rich. You may appear as an idiot, and that's what we want, but we'll make you a very wealthy man."
Herman Cain is being used as the inferior-thinking-black man that relates to the simple thinking Right Wingers. He has failed his mission. I can't believe people have been giving this a pass in the media. This is race as well as class warfare.
The Right Wing is one big fraud that needs to be exposed for what it is.
President Obama is so ahead of these guys, they're playing checkers while he's winning a game of chess against Bobby Fischer.
This is while every media and news source will try to pin something to President Obama to try to make this as close a race as possible. The Republicans are a bunch of clowns.
People are sick of racism. It's not going to affect this election. Skin color isn't an issue when no one can get a job. Like Clinton said, "It's the economy stupid".
The Republicans and the Tea Party crew are not even smart enough to recognize a "sane" candidate. John Huntsman is the best they got. Funny thing is, they don't want him. Go figure. Got to remember though this same party chose Sarah Palin in 2008.
It's clear that liberals are scared s#itless of Herman Cain. If he is the nominee, they won't be able to play their race card lie and Cain will get substantially more of the black vote than any Republican in the past.
Liberals are terrified of Cain.
"It's clear that liberals are scared s#itless of Herman Cain."
Oh yeah, right. First the libs were supposed to be afraid of Palin, but she choked to death on her own foot. Then the libs were supposed to be scared to death of Bachmann, but she choked to death on her own foot, too. The libs were then supposed to be very afraid of Perry who promptly choked to death on his own foot, and now the libs are supposed to be shaking in their Birkenstocks over Cain for no apparent reason.
Five bucks says Cain puts his foot in his mouth and chokes on it. It's been the pattern with the GOP's wannabe candidates lately. They're committing suicide by choking on their own stupid feet.
ConservativeNotRepublican
your right Obama played the race card big time , which is funny since he does not have a slave in his family tree yet he uses it . just goes to so how blind the Dumb-as rats are.
So, cherrytom. How's the lobotomy working out for you?
Eathlyvision- You think people are going to listen to your opinion about a republican candidate when you have grammar like that? LOL please!!!! At least the Tea Party does not say "John Huntsman is the best they GOT," or "GOT to remember though this same party chose Sarah Palin." You're absolutely brilliant, and people will follow your brilliance!
sailcat-20640101
what you trying to say that Obama had slaves in hei family tree ? really his mother was white hie father from Kenya so try again.
Hey, Sail-kitty.......guess your brain surgery isn't working out for you either.....or is it? Ha! You've got to be a Dem or just plain liberal, judging from your kiddish comment to cherrytom. What's the problem, couldn't come up with something with real substance? NO DOUBT
A Cherry Tom, I think he was being sarcastic and was referring to your dumb a$$ statement about Obama playing the "race card" Big Time! Now just how did he play the race card last time Einstein?
You deeply racist haters ought to get over yourselves. The President of the United States is a Bi-Racial, Educated Male. Get use to it. He will be in office until 2016 because the Republicans have "clowns" for Candidates and Cain, the latest flavor of the week, is a disgraceful Uncle Tomming, Step-N-Fetchit shill for the Koch Brothers that couldn't win the Presidency if he was in the Election by himself. Romney??? Which one are we talking about? He does more "flipping" than a cook at IHOP. Southern Baptist will not vote for a Mormon because sad to say, they do believe it is a "cult" and they will stay home so with the majority of voters being minorities, Obama just might carry the racist South too.
By the way there Cherry Tom, if Obama is so bad and so beatable by one of the Clowns in the GOP race, why the need for the Voter Restriction Laws popping up all over the place? That is just it, the GOP can't win unless they steal a race or cheat (2000) or Dems stay home (2010) After seeing the results of the Tea party election in 2010, you can bet Dems will be out in force and regain control of the House and maintain the Senate & Presidency. Get over it Haters, the GOP is on its way to being the Whigs of the 21st Century. The Party of Old, Racist White Men is dying off and with Rubio caught in his Lies about how his family got here, you can write off what Latino votes you thought you might have gotten with him on your retard Ticket... :) 4 more years for you to sit in Mom & Dad's basement spewing out your Right wing Hate because YOU, like your party, are a LOSER!
Thank you, Eddie! Well said!
Eddie, It makes me proud you live here in Washington state same as myself. I cannot believe those on the right have not realize that herman cain is currently on a book tour and has no ambition to be president besides making money , like Newt, bachmann and santorim.
lets see on TV when then Blind Black man a former NY Congressmen , who said it was great that we will have a Black man ,and descendant of a slave will be the next President of the United States of America. and Obama sat there and smiled . if Obama is so unbeatable then why are there so many people like you in this room trying to tell us how great he is Eddie in Seattle and Sailcat ? just who are you trying to get to believe you? if he is such a shoe in then why are you here? Because even you know he is going to be gone in 2012.
I'm here because it's fun watching you losers moan and groan over your pathetic candidates. Face it, little man, the GOP is publicly self-destructing and Obama will walk to reelection thanks to the efforts, or lack thereof, of the Republican Party.
Obama by default in 2012! America is holding an election and the GOP is not showing up!
a wise man once told me never argue with a drunk or a fool, and the 1st sign of a man with a small mind is one who turns to name call for he knows he has lost the war of words.
the only hope this nation has is to vote Obama out in 2012.
A review of the thread reveals that since I didn't lose the war of words, and certainly not a battle of wits with the witless, you must therefore be implying you are drunk again and that I shouldn't waste my time arguing with you.
Very wise. Bye!
once again you show how stupid you truly are , trying to spin things like your man Obama, and since your last statement shows the you lost the war, and assumed i drink in the 1st place which I don't for I find it a waste of time and money. so once again you return to name calling .
come on 2012 so we can put and end to the foolish rants of the small minded people and this nation can once again move forward. hope and change ,the only hope we have is that we change presidents in 2012.
cherrytom- the only change that obama brought with him was the worst 3 years in my life, when change was the only thing i had in my pocket!
ole blind democrat speaking: "Blame Bush! That white, war mongrel, hated America and had 2 unfunded wars!"
I sit here and read this posts seething with hate and wonder? How does attacking each other, our fellow Americans.....solve any of our problems? There is something to be said about a person that can keep their composure, regardless of the anger spewed at them. Show me a better alternative and I might not vote for Obama. Romney, as flip flop as he has been seems the most moderate candidate from the Republicans so far. Civility and kindness in the face of ignorance and aridity seems the only option on these posts.
earthlyvision, the GOP didn't pick Palin, McCain picked her as his running mate and lost. Huntsman bailed on Utah to work for the Obama Administration just months after telling Utahns he would finish his term as Gov. Then he went on to say the Obama's were great people and talked them up immensely. Now he wants us to forget all that. He doesn't have a chance.
Well, Daniel, people with limited intellectual capacity are easily frustrated. They can't comprehend simple concepts like integrity or courage so they invent imaginary worlds where they can exist among their painfully ignorant fantasies. Tea baggers and many right wing Republicans are like that. It's shameful.
Sam, are you that broke, that you only have change in your pocket? If things are that bad for you I'll send you a few bucks you can use towards a bottle or a meal. Thats a shame and it makes me feel guilty knowing your that broke and I'm here getting by and not worried about a bottle or a meal. Let me know if your that broke and I'll send you something to hold you over for a few days. Oh another thing before I go. Do you mean to tell me that Gw wasn't white? or a war monger, (Sam, I do think you mean monger instead of mongrel, but then I'm not sure, you just may mean that GW was a mixed breed) See I don't get it, your saying he was white and then a few words later he's a mixed breed? Anyhow, your being sarcastic saying he hated America and he had two unfunded wars, so your actually saying he didn't hate America and he had the wars on the books and funded? Sam you have me all confused now, was he a mixed breed of dog that hated America and he didn't fund the wars by putting them on the books and you being sarcastic makes me wonder what your talking about? See thats what gets me about repubs and tp's if they don't know what they are talking about they make something up and put the blame on Obama. Now Sam, that kind of thinking is exactly the way the repubs and tp's are thinking and its not going to get them elected. Most Americans unlike you Sam, want something concret to base their decision on before they go vote, if everyone made their decision like you, then heck even Pee Wee Herman could run and win. Oh well I guess thats probably average thinking for someone thats as broke as you are Sam. Don't worry about it Sam, just you voting means your interested in doing the right thing weather its right or wrong, so just let me know what you need and I'll see what I can send you. Have a nice day Sam.
Whether
joe- PLease send me some money, I have some nice college loans that need to be payed!
As for the other part, it was an autocorrect problem that i did not catch, darn ipad. As for the wars, they were funded, they just weren't fully on the books. The notion that the wars were unfunded was originally brought up my Hilary Clinton b/c she wanted tax increases to "fund" the war. Hillary Clinton is correct in pointing to Bush as the only American president to fail to increase taxes to pay for a foreign war launched on his watch. On the other hand, with the exception of Harry Truman, most previous presidents only partly funded the wars they launched. Clinton has exaggerated the case against Bush by skating over this fact. Then, Obama comes along as adds in treasury bonds to the "war budget" (a first in history) and claims the wars were unfunded. If the wars were unfunded, please account for the treasury bonds, does the FED have them? Would make a "know nothing" like Ron Paul pretty important in the next election if they did.
Your statement about Pee Herman is actually nearly correct! In a recent AP poll, people would rather vote for a general republican than Obama by a margin of 6%, but when compared to the current GOP field; obama and romney tie in general election terms!
Anyways, your useless rant over mongrel and monger was entertaining, but completely attributed to ipad auto correct. Hope you had fun writing it!
Maybe if college students weren't wasting money on things like iPads... they could pay off their loans a little easier... just sayin.
Sam, the Afghanistan and Iraq wars were unfunded. The money was borrowed from China to pay for them. When Cheney/Rumsfeld/Bush decided to invade Iraq, we were told Iraqi oil would pay for it - it didn't. The gang also kept the cost of the war off the books. President Obama put the wars on the books as they always should have been
Mandy- ever heard of a beta tester? No money wasted, only time!
Moderate- only 30% of the treasury bonds were bought internationally, and 1/3 of that was funded by China, read the CBO report!
This is a shame.... The Des Moines Register Poll is NOT the major story today.....it's a phone poll based on a week ago, made to certain callers of political discrimination. The REAL story is Ron Paul winning the Iowa Republican Founders Straw Poll in which many voting delegates overwhelmingly (%82) chose Dr. Paul for his economic vision and is non-interventionist tone. The Straw Poll is known for separating the true Republican favorites from the fake, diluted rhetoric of the others. Congrats MSNBC, I just gave this page journalistic integrity. Shame on you for choosing the poll of least importance as your top headline and IGNORING the important one. Just another one of the techniques to continue to prevent Dr. Paul from gaining momentum. I don't think it will work for much longer.
you mean ignoring the poll that has the person you support leading
Ron Paul 2012, ignored because he doesn't play the Wall Street - K Street - Beltway - mainstream media games.
Sorry Brett - Ron Paul is History and most Americans are not buying his 1840 crap - he is old news and does not fit into the 21st Century - other than that he is a hypocrite - the 1998 devastation of his district he had his hands out for $180 million dollars - Galveston - read about it a total fake
The only people that hold this poll in high regard must be the resturants and buisness's every 4 yrs that say ,here come these fools again. The GOP population couldn't win a toy in a crackerjack box. What a joke and these GOP'ers fall for this every 4 yrs.
Which Republican Presidential candidate is a gold bug? The answer:
The Republican primary has come down to a simple, titanic struggle between Mitt Romney ands the conservative party base looking for someone, anyone, to be the anti-Romney. The GOP contest has become a shocking race to the right, a battle to see how many times Romney can flip and flop on important issues to please the Tea Party, and what sort of outrageous rhetoric and bizarro proposals are unleashed by Mr. Cain and his "presidential campaign." Americans are getting a real eyeful of the GOP, and they are utterly disgusted by what they see. http://www.sunstateactivist.org
mattpfl. If Romney wasn't good enough for the gop when McCain was nominated then I'm thinking he won't be now, but they have no one else thats even remotely close to being able to run. I'm thinking if Romney is nominated then the repubs and tp's will vote for Obama again. Then maybe they are thinking Cain will be able to hold his own and run together with Mitt on the same ticket and steal a few votes from Obama and thats possible. BUT. Its not going to even be close to enough votes to unseat Obama.
Do you mean like Ronald Reagan was not good enough in 1976? Like him or hate him (I LOVED him), Reagan wiped the floor with Carter and his failed economic policies (de je vue all over again??) and then again with Mondale.
The hard right hate Romney for working with a Dem. controlled legislature in Mass. (even if he introduced conservative, market-oriented policies) and the Dems hate him because he is a Republican (and perhaps he also has the best chance of unseating the POTUS).
IMHO, Romney has the practical experience and faith in a market-driven economy, faith in individual initiative and drive, to put the country back on track much as Reagan did. If you think Reagan and his economic policies were a failure, then please feel free to vote for another four years of what America has endured under Obama/Biden.
I think the Iowa Republican Caucus should be held on Halloween because these "Candidates" are just plain SCARY!!!!!
Actually, they need to be in Key West right now. It is Fantasy Fest. I would just love to see the reaction of these folks.
The mixed up bags are destroying the GOP ?
The job of POTUS is incredibly difficult and subtle. It can not be done by the average person. It can not be done by an inexperienced person. It can only be done by a truly extraordinary person.
Cain has shown that he has the capability. So has Romney. Obama has shown that he is not up to the job.
The people of Iowa apparently recognize these facts.
Cain is a total loser and hes dumb as dirt, "OBAMA/2012". End of Story.
Cain did not even know we were fighting a war in Afganistan.
Obama is still looking for all of his 57 states!
Afganamafanastam?
If those are the most well-reasoned, intelligent arguments the left can manage, Cain is a shoo-in for the Oval Office.
Please stop, my sides are hurting from laughter.
"OBAMA/2012". End of America.
FYI The last "successful" business man to be POTUS was Herbert Hoover. Just saying.
Apparently you have decided to erase Mr. Peanut, the business man, from your memory.
Good god Herbert Hoover - who almost brought down rhis country -
To be fair, Mitt Romney has never flip-flopped. He has been remarkably consistent - always supporting whatever position he thinks he needs in order to be elected to whatever office he was running for at the time!
To be more fair, he's a liar.
Yes, as a long-time resident of Massachusetts, I can attest to the fact that Mr. Romney has very strong positions on both sides of every important issue.
Ron Paul 2012.
The only decent Repub running is Ron Paul and many of his ideas are "out to lunch",also. Truth... there are NO candidates, from either party, that are fit to President of the United States of America! Not one!
It's a shame that there is not recognition for John Huntsman and Buddy Roemer, both declared Republican candidates for president . . . Cain and Romney can't even get a majority of their own party to support them, how are they going to win a general election?
Since Cain and Romney are at the top together, who gets to drive the clown car?
Stinky, please tell us you didn't waste precious tax payer dollars going to school and that your post is all that we have to show for it . . .tell us you're a drop out . . . right?
What are you Stinky,12? I mean your age,we all know your IQ is less than that.
Now Stinky, why would Obama be driving the teapublican clown car?
Stinky, you are fit to be a Republican. Dumb, Stupid & Racist.... You get to move to the front of the GOP classroom....
it is funny how you call everyone the does not agree with Obama a racist , it only goes to show that the only reason you back Obama is because you are a racist.
My favorite thing about this whole GOP race to the bottom is the twist on an old saying into familiarity breeds disenchantment/disillusion/disgust or all three, take your pick.
Think I'm kidding? Think it's just coincidence that Romney and Cain, the two candidates who have visited Iowa the LEAST,are leading the polls? The more their own base sees of this pack of nitwits the more they dislike them.
Go ahead 'Baggers, say we're drinking the Obama Kool Aid,worshiping our God Odumbo,or whatever it is you're calling him this week,we'll just laugh at your silly asses. Because we can also remember all the other bold statements we've heard from the Right lately...
...Palin will enter the race and do what McCain was in the way of her doing in '08,beat Obama. Soooo...how's that lipsticky on a pitbully thing workin' out for ya?
...Bachman,the darling of the Tea Party and the founder of the Congressional Tea Party Caucus, she'll be the Conservative values candidate we can rally around. The subsequent discoveries that her and her husband (the re-animated corpse of Truman Capote) have their hands out for more government handouts than a whole bevy of Reagan's infamous "welfare queens" and that Michelle herself is just a complete moonbat have sent her to Santorum-ville in the polls. And didn't on of the Tea Bag groups withdraw it's support of her candidacy the other day, saying that she's just a pointless distraction of an entity in the race at this point?
...Romney,the Human Windsock. He started this whole shebang running at about 23% with Republican voters and after more than a year of hard campaigning,re-positioning himself on many key issues with the base, sometimes 5 times in a week, he's managed to get that number all the way up to...23%. Well played sir.
...Perry. All we saw in this forum all summer was "Wait until Perry gets in the race. He's a job creating machine. You'll see. When Perry gets in and runs to the nomination Obama is cooked. Yada, yada, yada." Got news for you people, the main contributors to Perry's campaign at this point are probably Democrats. Trust me,we want him to be the nominee more than you ever will, lol.
...Cain,aka the Flavor of the Month. Said that flavor was Black walnut. Turns out the flavor is Black Wingnut. Hey the book is selling like hotcakes though...
...Gingrich,aka the NEXT Flavor of the Month? Pffft,chortle,guffaw,LMFAO...are you frigging kidding me Bag Nation? Newt???!!! Your'e THAT desperate that Gingrich is picking up steam? Oh please, please, please make him the nominee. Oh man,if he even gets close Jon Stewart,Colbert,Olberman and Maher will give so much money to a Newt campaign that the Supremes may be forced to re-visit the Citizen's United ruling.
...Paul. We had Nader, you have Ron Paul. 'Nuff said.
I won't pretend to know who will eventually get your nomination,I have a feeling it will be Romney. I also think that would very possibly lead to the Tea Party running a protest candidate and splitting the ticket. But man if nothing else the popcorn sales watching this human Demolition Derby of the Dimwits should help the economy a little.
The republicans have a winning candidate but they won't get behind him because he is not a far right wing nut conservative. He is a Reagan conservative and his name is John Huntsman. He has been ambassador to China and a two time Governor. He is a man of high intelligence along with common sense. He has the ability to work with democrats and republicans to unite the country and move us forward. It is too bad the base of the republican party is dominated by uninformed and uneducated people because it leaves no room for a real statesman like John Huntsman.
If thats your cure for the economy, it explains why Obama hasn't had a plan either. Not saying i support Cain, but Obama has no room to talk
LOL "Romney, the Human Windsock" I will accept that as a quotable quote...and an EXCELLENT ONE
The Republicans have NO one who is a "winning" candidate because all of the country knows the only think they want is WAR, and Wall Street, that will make their rich friends more money, Their entire platform is against the interest of American people. That is why Obama will will because he the lessor evil.
@Jim
I'll actually second you on Huntsman Jim,but it's EXACTLY those qualities which doom him with the current majority of GOP voters.
I also think that Buddy Roemer, with his position of getting ALL the money out of politics...corporate,union and PAC...has something important to say and should be given a platform on which to say it. But when you're dealing with a party that may as well brand itself as a subsidiary of Koch Industries at this point that ain't never gonna happen. And no I don't think the Dems would exactly be rolling out the Red Carpet for Mr. Roemer either.
Outstanding... Excellent... Great Saturday night Nightcap!! Cheers to the GOP! Obama/Biden '12
Excellent post. Kind of sums it up.
Grover, that was one great post. Loved it. The people cheering for the GOTP candidates frighten me more than the candidates do.
If what you say about Romney is true, then why hasn't he dumped Romneycare as a failed experiment like Rush, Hannity, et al want him to do? I believe Romney is a pragmatist that has strongly conservative social and fiscal views (as a Mormon and a capitalist in the traditional sense). The fact that he was able to move forward conservative, market-oriented solutions through a liberal state legislature (not just garden variety Dems but real Kool Aid drinkers) portends well for future legislative initiatives at the federal level.
Both the hard right and left castigate Romney for not being an ideologue. I believe most of America wants someone who can fix the economy and end stupid regulations, not pass a particular ideological litmus test.
Really Louie- the GOP is propping up Cain and weakening the ticket so liberals will not call them racist? Really? Who's the clown with THAT logical brilliance...
Holy crap, I guy who was not really serious about running and was just doing a book tour deal might be president? No government expierence at all? No way.
Yes - we elected him president in 2008...oh, wait, he wasn't on a book tour, he was organizing left-wing community "outreaches" for ACORN, hanging out with cop-killers and teaching Communist "economics!" All on video but simply ignored by the media....
Actually, Mr. Cain has plenty of government experience. As head of The National Restaurant Association he was a lobbyist in everything but name. He has three years experience as a lobbyist shill for RJ Reynolds opposing the notion that smoking in a crowed restaurant is unhealthy. He is portrayed as a "businessman" when his most recent paid employment and experience was as a lobbyist.
"... the role that helped propel Mr. Cain into politics was that of an ultimate Washington insider: industry lobbyist." New York Times October 22, 2011.
Mr. Cain also lobbied against lowering the blood alcohol ratio for drunken driving and of course, increasing the Federal Minimum Wage.
I don't have a issue with Mr. Cain representing the interests of the member restaurants (and the Tobacco Industry), but fair reporting would identify him as a former Lobbyist and Businessman. He has not managed a major corporation in ten years. It is certainly misleading to portray him as a Beltway Outsider!
Rick Perry will encourage Illegal Immigrants to come to Texas for free college paid for by the Texas Taxpayers and Federal Subsidies, while Mitt Romney says it was O.K. to have these same illegals working for him before he was running for office. Herman Cain says, not only will be build a fence along the Mexico Border he will ELECTRIFY IT..
So many terrorists are gaining entry through our unsecure Borders that it is little wonder why there are so many of them here now. HERMAN CAIN will put an IMMEDIATE STOP to the ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT PROBLEM.
Illegal immingration is not the problem in America. Corporations taking their jobs overseas is the real problem. Check out what Whirlpool just did.
Jim
You need to live closer to the border. Illegals are taking skilled American jobs at a lower salary and making the construction co.'s rich. They are having NO TROUBLE getting into our welfare system!!
The illegals do not do "skilled jobs" unless you can call jobs as a busboy or lawn workers skilled.
2 + 2 still = 4 there Jimmy. The reason so many jobs have and will go overseas is that corporations are competing for your business with overseas companies (aka corporations) whose home-based labor force is happy to work regardless of the wages and our workers (such as GM, Goodyear, Goodrich, GE and Boeing) are making $72.00 an hour EVEN WHEN THEY ARE NOT WORKING. Therefore products made overseas (aks China) are cheaper than ours...
So if you so hate American corporations going overseas, get behind the movement to stop big labor from bilking the American worker while living high-on-the-hog. Then American made products will be able to compete...simple math....for simple educated Americans...nearly last in math, science, engineering...but we're good at political science....and pottery...and green energy...and drug addiction and teen-age pregnancy...
fayse
"The illegals do not do "skilled jobs" unless you can call jobs as a busboy or lawn workers skilled."
construction is not skilled labor?
Romney never said it was okay for illegals to work for him or anyone else. He hired a company that apparently hired illegal aliens. Can you imagine the uproar if Romney did something stupid (like you apparently would) and went to another company's employees and asked for their "papers" because they didn't look right or had a funny accent?
Personally, I think Perry's attack on Romney for the illegal-gardner-working-for-a-landscaping-company-Romney-hired issue should disqualify Perry from any serious position of power. Dittos for anyone who would continue to use this canard against Romney. Imagine the oath these idiots would require: "Have you now or ever hired any individual, company, partnership or association who may have employed someone who was an undocumented alien?" Get real!!
Nobody cares about whether a person is actually capable of being President any more. No one cares what he will actually do. In fact, they assume he will lie. He will say outrageous things to get votes, then they assume (hope) he will be more reasonable in office. Maybe they expect the extremism ... clearly no one actually thinks through the consequences of their policies any more.
We are a nation of fools. We elect fools as President. We get foolish laws. We get corruption. We die. We deserve what we get.
999 has no substance it is not backed by any tangible theory its just an add jingle like 5 dollar foot long
Romney does not advance any policy initiatives that are much different than what we have and his fundemental political philosophy is hard to tell because it seems to shift so widely that he is not believable.
Perry is an obvious poser without any real conviction who does not seek to advance the debate past who mowed who's lawn and has no problem with demeaning the process as long as he can earn points
Ron Paul always seeks to elevate debate and delve into the substance of the matter at his own peril dragging the reluctant media out from theyre sideshow circus he does not regurgitate talking points when questioned but answers questions with a sincerity and consistancy that is unmached by the other candidates time and time again he has stood the floor of the house alone sticking to his constitutional principles he is believable and is unwavering in his devotion to liberty and the prospierity that is derived from it. Duh Ron Paul 2012!
Bruce, NO !!!! Ron Paul is living in the 19th century. We can't and should not try to re live the past. We must move forward not backwards.
Forward? Are you kidding me? Sure, keep going forward... right off that cliff! The constitution is a document guaranteeing your RIGHTS and you want to use it as toilet paper because you think it's outdated? No wonder we're in such a fix!
To anyone planning to vote for Romney or Cain: Do you really think that a vote for either of them is going to result in any real changes in this country? I'm voting for Ron Paul!
I don't understand how Ron Paul's views are seen as going "backwards"...aren't we already in poor enough shape as it is?
"...time and time again he has stood the floor of the house alone sticking to his constitutional principles he is believable and is unwavering in his devotion to liberty and the prospierity (sic) that is derived from it."
You are absolutely correct. The operative word is alone. Mr. Paul's political philosophy is alone and unique among the 435 members of The House of Representatives. If the odds are 434 to 1 (1/4 of 1 percent), how is he going to get any traction with Congress? The President does not pass bills, he can only sign or veto legislation.
You betcha he is charming, articulate and intelligent. He simply has no more chance at influencing congressional action as did Ross Perot, another charming and eloquent Texan.
Mitt will win it all, the "1%" want him and do not care what the Christian right or Tea Party thinks!! He is 10 to 1 in Vegas. Cain is a stand up comedian.
I like the stand up comedian. We have one of those here in Vegas too, forgot his name but starts with a R something. A real joker though.
Reid... Harry Reid. Shaken but not stirred by rational thought. (I'm from Nevada)
Wow not good for republicans, not good at all, the candidates who spent the most time there poll at the bottom, and the candidates that spent the least time there are at the top, that means the more exposure republican candidates get the less people like them. Maybe Rick Perry does have the right idea about skipping those debates, because evidently as long as they don't know you they can still like you.
Wouldn't it be funny for the GOP to elect the FIRST BLACK president? That would shut up those race card democrats! The GOP can campaign for CHANGE. Obama has a record that he can't defend!
The republicans are not going to elect Cain. McConnell, Boehner, and Cantor have tried everything to get Obama to fail and it is mostly because he is an intelligent black man and they can't stand that. There is no way in Hades they will support Cain.
The "first black president" RDG6? Really?
Methinks RDG6 stands for Really Dense Goofball with 6 denoting your IQ and/or level of emotional maturity.
Still trying to deal the race card off the bottom of the deck to I see. Well at least you're a consistent bigot.
Race card, race card!! What's the matter do you not like black people? Are mixed race black people all that the Democrats like? I think the Democrats do not like Cain because his skin is too dark!
My representative, whom I not only have voted for every time but also volunteered to campaign for, happens to be Elijah Cummings. Is HE sufficiently dark complected enough for you?
At this point I can only surmise that you are either a paid Right Wing troll/spammer or just the singularly most ignorant racist jackass that I've seen post on this site for a while. Not particularly intersted in which as you're beneath my contempt.
There is still plenty of time to sort out the Repubs. Bachmann has no plan. Santorum can't win & neither can Huntsman at 1%. Ron Paul has his 8% but can't get a majority because our people are too far away from Paul's world of 1776. Perry has dough, but even the religious right are worried that he can't get the middle or win. Perry blew the debates & got in too late with a right wing tax plan that still doesn't get the middle.
So it's logical that Cain becomes the anti-Romney even though they are both businessmen. People who denigrate Cain haven't really studied him nor do they realize that he perseveres over time...tough guy. He has a history of success and he's diverse when you consider his math degree, rocket work in the Navy, Fed work in KC, and restaurant CEO success. His radio career isn't bad either for a 65 y.o. man.
Romney is relentless with his work too, but is bored with campaigning & can't seem to win the hearts of the right. Never mind that he has a great reputation & that Romneycare is but one project of hundreds that he tackled. Romney somehow scares everyone even though he was just stuck in a blue state. MA is the worst state to be a Republican besides CA, so maybe they should study a little more?
The bigger problem for these guys is staying interested in the stupidity of campaigning and the snakes of Congress. Bringing a toolbox to fix Congress ain't going to work. CEO's have learned that gov't accountability is like nailing jello to a wall. The Fed gov't is so slimy that whoever wins is in for a tough ride...especially with the crooks from ACORN & the media helping Obama try to get more green pork, Union pork, and other shady stuff like the guns in Mexico, voting problems from Black Panthers, cheating donors, etc.
Good luck to Cain & Romney. I haven't figured out which one I'll vote for yet. Romney has been vague on his plans (which I don't blame him really). Cain needs to adjust his numbers & then I'd be more excited. He needs to get rid of old code yes. But I think an 18% corp, 6% payroll, & 3% sales tax would work better, give or take a few digits to get revenues to $2T.
When you talk of numbers, you should thing in percentages, when it comes to individuals. nine percent of 40k is a bigger slice to that family, than nine percent is to a millionaire. The millionaire has 910K to live on and pay bills and spend on anything elase he wants to. A millionaire family can spend 10k on food whic is only one percent of his total income. A family of 4 spends about 4 or 5 percent of income on food. A 40K family spends at least 15% of its income on housing. This means it has used up 30K just on taxes eating and housing. It has 10K for everything else. A millionaire can spend 200K on housing and he still has 700K left over for everything else. 9-9-9 stll leaves the small incomes in the hole percentage wise. To be fair all around a graduated tax is the only way to go. A millionaire will still come out on top if you loped off 50% of his income in taxes.
