Perry: 'Shoot, I might be a good debater before this is all over'

CONCORD, N.H. -- Rick Perry said he is unsure whether he would skip any future scheduled debates.

"I don't know whether we're going to forgo any debates," the Texas governor said in a question-and-answer session with reporters at the New Hampshire Secretary of State's office, where he filed for that state's primary. "There are a lot of debates. Shoot I might be a good debater before this is all over.

"We haven't made any decisions about what we're gonna do."

He also again characterized his remarks about the president's birth certificate as a joke, disputing that the controversy counted as "a mistake"

"Listen, I don’t consider making fun of something being a mistake. I don’t think Americans see that as anything other than a distraction, just like I see it as a distraction," he said before brandishing his postcard-size hypothetical tax form. "I don’t see this as a mistake."

He also addressed gay marriage, immigration, and his chances in New Hampshire.

The problem is that, like it or not, you really do need to be a pretty good debater to win the Presidency. Let's be honest...the average voter doesn't really start paying attention to the elections until they get close. And other than the attack ads that start flying from both sides, what is the #1 opportunity to distinguish yourself from the other candidates? The debates. I'm not saying you have to be a pro at it...but you can't shoot yourself in the foot every time you go out there either.

You can bash Perry all you want.

Perry delivered jobs for Texans equal to the amount in 40 other states added together. ( Caterpillar and other companies went there since Perry's the Gov.).

Citizens and companies are fleeing Democrat states ( like California) in droves for jobs in Texas.

Charlie,

Things are changing for the better in Texas. That's all you need to understand. If Obama would help protect the Texas/Mexico border, maybe there wouldn't be so many "illegals" there and on the state doll.

OH WAIT..........I Forgot.......... Obama doesn't believe in protecting our borders because the "illegals" are the future voters of the Democrat "food stamp" Party.

    #7.7 - Fri Oct 28, 2011 4:42 PM EDT

Our President has deported more illegals (400,000) last year (FY2011) than Bush did in either term.

Our President has provided more Southern Border security in both Border Guards and National Guard troops than any President ever.

If the President does not believe in protecting our borders then perhaps you can explain why the number of Border Patrol agents is the highest it has ever been (over 21,000 agents)? Certainly, if the President was not interested in protecting the border he would have told them to hit the bricks, right?

Only way you'd ever turn in a good debate performance is if you have some of your rich lobbyist friends write all your material (like they already do, along with your policies), and then have them hire a professional actor/impersonator to also deliver it for you.

Now you understand why Cowboy Rickey never agreed to debate any opponent while campaigning in Texas. "It's too hard to articulate your ideas and concepts in a one minute answer." Right, it's much easier to do it in a 30 second commercial.

The purpose of a debate is to defend your policies and positions; commercials do not require any facts or substance. As long as Harold Simmons and Big Oil continue to fund his media blitz, Cowboy Ricky will stick with the hyperbole and slander that has always worked for him.

Really sad that he knows when its over and donate the $17 Million Dollars in campaign fund to those police officers, firemen, and teachers he had fired in Texas when he could have used what they call the Rainy-Day Fund. Money from Obama's Stimulus package in 2009 that Texas did not spend and some will hopefully in up in prison for.

Too bad he did not remember what his mom told him. It is better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you are stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

He'll attack without provocation, and when he gets mad he's likely to spill the truth about all the other GOP morons. He has no chance, he's around 6% now. But he can still act like a spoiler for everyone else. Every anti Romney, anti Cain ad he produces with his 55 million dollars is one less that Obama has to pop for. And now, especially with Romney, it's not about winning or losing, but who can drag the other guy down the furthest.

OMG - Now Scary Perry has caught the Flip Flop Flu from For Pete's Sake Mitt and is waffling yet again on debates! This GOP saga is so entertaining!

I posted these comments on another thread but think they apply here -

Scary Perry has taken that old political cliche "I want to spend more time with my family" to a new level.

Scary Perry - understandably - wants to duck future debates because in the ones up to now he has come across as someone with a perpetual "deer-in-the headlights" facial expression and a very dim bulb persona.

So now he is saying "I want to spend more time with the voters."

Sorry, Scary. This is so transparently obvious it is laughable.

You are at 6% for a reason. Not even a gazillion $$ will ever erase that September 22 debate answer where you tried so very, very hard to remember your memorized line about For Pete's Sake Mitt - but totally botched it.

      You are Texas Toast.

For Pete's Sake Mitt has a chronic case of the Flip Flop Flu. He had a flare-up this week that started in Ohio on Tuesday and ended 24 hours later when he landed in Virginia. This story brought to mind - and to numerous TV screens - the images of all of For Pete's Sake "greatest flip-flopping hits." There will probably be a $9.99 video coming soon - just in time for holiday gift giving.

Speaking of 999, Herman Cain had a fabulous week. His quirky ad became a sensation as he held his own at the top of the polls. As a liberal Dem, I have to admit I like Herman Cain! I would never vote for him but I can see why many on the GOP side are attracted to his campaign. He is warm, sincere, smart, and funny. He has that elusive "it" factor. He has proven beyond any doubt that he is a force to be reckoned with because Mr. GOP Establishment Mitt-backer Karl Rove is coming unglued night after night waving around his white erase board with reasons why GOP voters should not like Herman. But apparently - in Wisconsin, for example - they must think Karl is yesterday's news as in their latest poll out last night Cain is at 30% to For Pete's Sake Mitt's 18%! The "Cain Train" is like the Little Engine That Could, puffing along saying "I think I Cain, I think I Cain."

And as a Democrat who supports President Obama, it has been a phenomenal week for him. His poll numbers are rising along with the economic numbers.
