Wanna get away? Johnson files in N.H. after all

Gary Johnson's place on the New Hampshire ballot cost him 50% more than it should have.

The filing fee in the Granite State is $1,000, but after an embarrassing misstep by his campaign yesterday -- failing to file by proxy on the last day it could do so -- the former New Mexico governor hopped on a $500 one-way flight to get from Arizona to New Hampshire to file in person.

“As the first-in-the-nation primary state New Hampshire is an important focus for our campaign,” Johnson said said in a statement this morning. “I’ve spent a lot of time in New Hampshire -- even biking across it -- and look forward to continuing to take my message to the voters of this great State.”

The longshot candidate even rented a home in the state.

*** UPDATE *** More from NBC's Jo Kent in Concord: At the filing today, Johnson said, "I shouldn't be here right now, meaning I was not intending to be here in person. I was intending for this to be filed beforehand. If anybody is responsible I guess it's me."

Johnson's procrastination did not entirely work against him. By filing 45 minutes before Rick Perry, he was greeted by a full court of press awaiting the Texas governor.

"You got the right person? I'm Gary Johnson not Rick Perry," he joked to the crush of cameras.

This is not the first time a candidate has nearly missed New Hampshire's deadline after campaigning in the Granite State. In the 2004 cycle, Dennis Kucinich flew from Washington to Concord to file in person on the final day after his campaign realized they were not allowed by state law to register on his behalf, according to Gardner. Kucinich was serving in Congress at the time.

This afternoon, Johnson flies back to Arizona to continue his three-day swing there.

Gary who?

I've noticed a real trend in the poor economy, for people to run for office to make money or to generate free publicity for their businesses. If they actually got elected, these folks would faint.

Like republicans really need another "Big Johnson" in the race.

Or, on the flipside, we could argue that they need at LEAST one. ;-)

He was governor of New Mexico, and therefore is as qualified as Gov. Romney, or Gov. Huntsman (in fact he served longer than either of them did). And he was a business person (a la Herman Cain). What I don't understand is why the libertarian candidates (Rep. Paul, Gov. Johnson and Herman Cain) don't have enough support to leave the "umbrella" of the GOP.

And why is Ron Paul a Republican?

#5.1 - Fri Oct 28, 2011 12:46 PM EDT

Both sides.

30% are firmly independant.

30ish are democrat,

30ish are republican

To form a viable third-party, you'd need at least 25% support. Likely 10% stolen from dems, 10% stolen from reps, 5% of thos indies.

We're getting there, but not this cycle. Soon.

That's one tiny umbrella republicans are all trying to get under, their umbrella is only 2% the size of Obama's and the democrats umbrella, that's why republicans are all wet lately.

Now THERE'S a ringing endorsement.

Any idea about what he stands for? Or is it just any doorway in a thunderstorm?

Any idea about what he stands for?

After 3 years of his administration I still ask that about the President.

"I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views."

...and nothing has changed

...and nothing has changed

I know this, of course, but I still feel the same. And I'll always take the empty suit I know, as opposed to the empty suit I don't know.

    #5.6 - Fri Oct 28, 2011 2:56 PM EDT

Well that is the point, that nothing has changed, now who do you think is taking all the credit for making sure nothing changes?

    kate and Amy,

both Paul and Cain get exposure when they are running in GOP race. they get to be part of the debates and the political daily talk. If they ran as the libertarians they are, they would be a footnote in any political analysis. They would sink into oblivion.

That kind of attention to detail and management skill is just what we need in a President...oh wait.....we already had the MBA President in George Bush. That worked out really well for us, didn't it?!

Has anybody ever actually met a CEO who wasn't a jerk?

    Sure.

All your local business owners likely call themselves CEO's. Esp. if it's an LLC.

    Amy,

It's too bad that you have the attitude that you have about people that have been successful in business. You should try making something of yourself instead of whining about people you don't even know and make unfounded remarks about them. Hey...how about this... "Have you ever met anyone from Portland that wasn't a jerk?"

to Americans first: First, you have the title wrong. America First would be classic Republican. Secondly, Michele Bachmann is capable of, and will defeat, Barak Hussein Obama. Have you got a real name? What is this pseudonym all about? What is your actual name? Scared? Hiding behind Americansfirst? I don't blame you for being too ashamed to reveal your actuall name. Why not just move to England right now, before the November 2012 election? If they would have you in England. But if you told them in England that you disrespected the name Tea Party, they would love you, of course. theyhate the Tea Party too. It led to the Revolution, and robbed them of the American colonies. Or, you can stay here in America, vote for Michele Bachmann, join the Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln, and just be happy. Make yurself some money, so you can pretend to be rich. That will satisfy some inner longiing in you, I suppose.

        November 2013

Today, President Gary Johnson apologized profusely for forgetting to make a payment on the nation's debt, an error that sent the stock market into freefall, and caused the Chinese to call in Treasury notes that they hold, although once the panic subsided, things returned to normal.

Stocks on the New York Stock Exchange fell by 1,500 points, with numerous electronic delays in trading. Banks were forced to shut doors as Americans demanded to withdraw more in money than the banks had in reserves. President Johnson said, "This is certainly an embarassing misstep," but added, " I'll try not to let it happen again. I didn't get to the Federal Reserve on time. My bike had a flat tire."

These have been seminar writers for the Left, and I don't care much foor whyat they have had to say.

That is because I am sensible, well-educated, and don't go to seminars to be told what to say about my phony political views. Thank you, all of you who are Conservative and have taken the time to reply to the sniveling, name-calling atheists who hate America and want Barak Hussein Obama(alias the Conniver) to defeat America. I am 80 years old, have led a good life, (never been a millionaire and don't care) and I am sooooo glad I don't share your deadbeat, (beatnik) attitudes, my Liberal shtoonks.

Good post, Gordon. Most of the these leftist posters just cut and paste from radical blogs and websites, for the apparent amusement of other radicals; they convince nobody.

Gordon, have you taken all your meds today? Perhaps you should check what you may be missing, as you appear off kilter.

For the record, President Obama's first name is spelt Barack.

I guess the thought of intelligent, informed progessives is too much for you to handle, GL.

It's just so much easier to dismiss those who have different viewpoints by insulting them, isn't it? How hard would it be to take off the tinfoil hat and have a real discussion with others?

Oh, and Gordon, while you're thinking about that, do your best to try to reconcile these two statements that you posted:

sniveling, name-calling atheists who hate America

        Barak Hussein Obama(alias the Conniver)

Calling people out for name calling while engaging in such activity in the same sentence is either the most cynical thing I've read today, or the most delusional.

For the record, I don't need to copy information from anywhere else. I'm quite capable of thinking for myself. It would be nice if that could become a trend.

Why waste the money? Here we are, a handful of weeks for the opening contests, and Johnson is joking about how the media is camped out for another candidate (who also happens to be in single polling digits)?

I sort of like Johnson; thought he was a good enough governor. I liked how in his second term he started talking about the folly of the drug war, and candidly said he could only because he wasn't running again. But at some point, you have to be able to see it isn't going to happen.
