VIDEO: Split on interpretations of Romney's testy moments

Mitt Romney's showed flashes of testiness at last week's debate. It was the first time a national audience saw it, but that side of him has come through several times on the campaign trail this time around -- something that wasn't seen as much in 2007-2008.

Romney's raw reactions are reminiscent of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, whose popularity with conservatives seemed to soar higher because of his contentious moments with voters. Christie considered a run himself, but opted against it and endorsed Romney.

But is Romney channeling his inner Christie -- or is this just how he reacts to being challenged?

There's a split on the interpretations of Romney's testy moments. Some, including the campaign, say the moments reflect strength. Others thought differently.

Republican voters may respond to the confrontational style in a primary, but will swing voters in a general election?

Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul responded this way in an email to First Read:

"These moments have been moments of strength for Gov. Romney -- he has shown his passion about the issues and made it clear that he is going to stand up for what he believes in and to defend his record from misrepresentations."

The statement pivoted to President Obama:

"While President Obama has created an economic disaster zone, yet still seems to think things are going well, Gov. Romney realizes that this campaign is about the big issues facing our country and understands what is at stake."

Discuss this post

Really?

A more fitting headline would of been; Willard gets silly!

Crying for help from Anderson Cooper is hardly testy...

I'm starting to think the book "Diary of a Wimpy Kid' is actually Willard's autobiography! ;o)

Romney's "testy" moments are a clear signal of an authoritarian personality, wrapped up, but not quite perfectly, in his otherwise civil manners and button-down appearance.

Put simply, Romney doesn't like to be questioned. It's a temperament issue.

Conservatives will shoot back that President Obama occasionally flashes his temper, too, and sometimes appears impatient with those who question him.

Yes, he does. And it's a legitimate issue for consideration.

But when the President smiles, you always know it's from the heart.

Romney, not so much.

I see that obama's new slogan for 2012 is "Winning The Future",

If I was running a campaign with a fairly unpopular incumbent, the last thing to do is have a re-election slogan whose intitials are WTF! lol Is there a subliminal message there? :) And if so, how would you interpret it?

"These moments have been moments of strength for Gov. Romney -- he has shown his passion about the issues and made it clear that he is going to stand up for what he believes in and to defend his record from misrepresentations."

He better start with the man in the mirror, because nobody provides more misrepresentations of what he stands for than Mitt himself. I find that pretty damn funny coming from a man that changes his position, fro one campaign stop to the next and back again, this is nothing new for Mitt, it is one of the things he is best known for, misrepresenting himself on a daily basis. Maybe the guy is just schizophrenic, he may have mental health issues, because he does not even show the slightest hint of guilt, or uneasiness when he completely contradicts himself from one day to the next. If he does not have mental health issues then he is one of the best stone cold liars I have ever seen.

Barack Obama comments recently have increasingly been interpreted as 'scolding'! To many former supporters he has become the nation’s scolder-in-chief—lashing out at friends and foes alike—and placing blame for things gone wrong on everybody but himself and his policies. Here are the Top 10 Obama Scolds:

1. America going soft: President Obama placed the blame for the nation’s woes squarely on the American people when he said this last month: “This is a great, great country that had gotten a little soft, and we didn’t have that same competitive edge that we needed over the last couple of decades.” With an election year looming, was insulting the voters a major mishap?

2. Take slippers off: The President even scolded his most loyal supporters, telling a gathering of the Congressional Black Caucus, “I expect all of you to march with me and press on. Take off your bedroom slippers, put on your marching shoes. Shake it off. Stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying.” That was too much even for Rep. Maxine Waters (D.-Calif.), of South Central Los Angeles, who said Obama “just got a little bit off the teleprompter.”

3. Bitter clingers: Obama’s most famous put-down of his fellow Americans came during the 2008 presidential election, when he said at a San Francisco fund-raiser: “It’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

4. Eat your peas: During the summer’s debt-ceiling debate, Obama sternly reproached congressional Republicans while rejecting a short-term increase in the borrowing limit. At a press conference, the President lectured: “That is not an acceptable approach. So we might as well do it now. Pull off the Band-Aid. Eat our peas.”

5. Do-nothing Congress: Obama is taking the Truman route, blaming a “do-nothing” Congress for holding up his jobs bill. In doing so, the President seems to have forgotten that the Senate is still run by Democrats, some of whom aren’t enamored of Stimulus II. Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid is said to be none too pleased with the President’s strategy and, according to The Hill, their relationship is “terse.”

6. Cairo apology: Soon after taking office, Obama felt it necessary to undertake an overseas “apology tour,” painting America’s past actions in a bad light. In Cairo, he criticized Bush’s war on terror, while continuing most of his anti-terror policies. Sept. 11, 2001, he said, "was an enormous trauma to our country. The fear and anger that it provoked was understandable, but in some cases, it led us to act contrary to our ideals." What does the antiwar crowd think about drones killing U.S. citizens?

7. Pay a little more: The community organizer-in-chief loves the class-warfare game, and never did he play it more audaciously than during the debt-ceiling debate. Mocking tax breaks for “millionaires and billionaires, oil companies and corporate jet owners,” the President lectured: “If you are a wealthy CEO or hedge fund manager in America right now, your taxes are lower than they have ever been. … You can still ride on your corporate jet. You’re just going to have to pay a little more.”

8. Republicans small: Obama scolded the entire Republican presidential field, charging them with being silent when a gay soldier was booed during a debate, never mind it was clear the boos were aimed at a specific policy. “We don’t believe in the kind of smallness that says it’s okay for a stage full of political leaders—one of whom could end up being the President of the United States—being silent when an American soldier is booed,” he told a Human Rights Campaign dinner crowd, where his gay and lesbian supporters cheered robustly.

9. Tea Party darkness: Obama fuels the left-wing smear campaign against the Tea Party movement when he makes statements like these, in an interview with Rolling Stone: “There are probably some aspects of the Tea Party that are a little darker, that have to do with anti-immigrant sentiment or are troubled by what I represent as the President.”

10. Attack watch: Now Obama wants to turn his supporters into an army of scolds, with his campaign asking them to snitch to the Attack Watch website whenever they hear a smear against the President. Luckily, the mocking of the site has gone viral, as submissions such as, “There's a new Twitter account making President Obama look like a creepy, authoritarian nut-job,” becoming the norm.

First of all one month at 2.5% growth is not a trend. That number is based on incomplete data. Come back on Nov 23 after the complete data is in. We all know these numbers are always revised down. Who would've ever thought we were suppose to cheer 2.5% growth?

Another week at 400,000 new unemployment apps. Now that is a trend and boxes with the Governor Walker narrative of being caught up in the backwash of the Obama failed policies.

That is what you are supposed to do WCA you are supposed to spend a little of the nations tax money in the way more people who pay it want it to be spent, than all of it the way just some want it to be spent. If you can have billions spent on oil subsidies for companies that are already the most profitable companies on the planet, you can help a kid with a college loan, you can try a few green tech company subsidies, you can try 8 Solyndra's a year, for the cost of the oil subsidies alone. Besides these kids could see the day when they have to have something besides oil, they might need those educations, and the knowledge gained through the implementation of some green techs.

Romney's style reflects his upbringing as an only boy with older sisters. He identifies with the patriarch of the family, who favored him, which also means he identifies with maintaining the staus quo. I don't think his positions are ever his own, which is why he get's accused of flip flopping, he's just defending current conventional wisdom.

When he get's attacked he turns peevish, as if he can't believe his opponent has the nerve to question his position, considering he's Dad's favorite, and his positions are just aligned with current establishment thinking.

Romney would have been a stronger candidate if he'd grown up with a brother, which would have forced him to learn to compete on more substantial grounds, and maybe developed a more orginal opinion or two.

Happy to oblige, Spanky. President Obama was raised by a single mother for most of his childhood. She took him to Indonesia where he had to toughen up to deal with bullies in the neighborhood. I would say that rough environment took the place of having brothers to compete against. Obama's mother didn't shield him from life, but taught him self discipline which he used to make his own way. His mother remarried and gave Barack a sister, who looked up to him. He married another "younger sister" type in Michelle, which is probably why his marriage works. President Obama is an effective leader because he can think for himself, and stand up to the bullies.

Let's analyze Spanky,

Spanky has no interest in what another is saying. This shows clear ADD (ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER).

When Spanky's losing an argument, he gets hostile. (PTSD -POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER)

When he starts drinking or abusing drugs, he's "SELFMEDICATING". When he disagrees with what someone else is saying, but they provide proof, and he has none, he goes into DENIAL. When his candidates say or do something that he can't defend, he tries to get CLOSURE to cover his shame.

When he repeatedly whines about other posters, he blames it on his OCD. (OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER). When someone writes a post that Spanky doesn't like or can't refute, he needs to make them look bad. This is called "ACTING OUT".

When you point out the errors in Spanky's thinking and he doesn't want to look bad he tries to blame it on his DEFENSE MECHANISMS. Spanky's PASSSIVE AGGRESSIVE behavior falls within the purview of the kind of person we used to call a platitudinous blowhard , or a Joan of Arc. If ever accused of being passive aggressive, Spanky says sarcastically, “Oh, Fine, You’re Right. I’m Passive-Aggressive."

When Spanky has had enough he simply takes short, shallow breaths, clenches his fists, paces, and refuses to release the tension in his shoulders. That would be a PANIC ATTACK.

Spanky is PUSHING BUTTONS when Spanky reacts badly to other posters who are:

a.) Saying absolutely true things that really shouldn’t upset someone
b.) Pointing out that Spanky is a hypersensitive freak who can’t handle the truth about anything

DYSFUNCTION: Is when the only consistent feature of all Spanky's dissatisfying problems is Spanky.

As an addition to your findings, I'd like to add that Spanky goes into "radio silence" when he realizes he has weaseled himself into a corner and can't provide factual information to bolster his deliberate misrepresentations and/or outright lies, or even a simple challenge to his "opinion" as he adds that everyone elses' opinions are wrong.

...but he is a "lawyer", you know...

I am not sure that Romney's sense of entitlement is the story. He is nothing but a preppie, raised to believe that he is the Lord of the Manor, and owed deference from the peasants. And he sees everyone who is not him as a peasant.

No, the story I would like to see emphasized is his inability to exude enough confidence and authority to get control of those situations. Perry clearly did not recognize that he was dealing with a demi-God. And if Romney can't deal with someone like Perry, can you imagine how he would do with the world's leaders?

Frightening thought, isn't it?

continue to insist he is "The smartest man ever elected to the Presidency."

OK, I have my Romney political ad worked up. Picture this....

A revolving door with GOP candidate Mitt Romney trapped inside. The door spins one way and quote number one pops out of his mouth. The door spins the other way, and quote number two pops out of his mouth. Every quote makes the door spin faster and faster, first one way, then another way, all the while whirring to the sound that the Three Stooges make when they get "testy". Whoo-whoo-whoo-whoo-whoo.......

'The TARP program... was nevertheless necessary to keep banks from collapsing in a cascade of failures.' [1]

'When government is... bailing out banks... we have every good reason to be alarmed.' [2]

'I don't support any gun control legislation.' [2]

'Based on the numbers of American Muslims... I cannot see that a cabinet position would be justified.' [1]

'A person should not be elected because of his faith nor should he be rejected because of his faith.' [2]

White Collar Auto,

Don't you Republicans ever use a library? This is the second time I've had to explain this to a GOP moron. I wouldn't have to re-post if you'd all pay attention the first time.

I bet you always wondered what those little numbers behind the quotes were for....they are called

i·bi·dem

(b-dm, -bdm)

adv. Abbr. ib. or ibid.
In the same place. Used in footnotes and bibliographies to refer to the book, chapter, article, or page cited just before.

Now, just move your cursor over the number until the little pointed hand appears and click on it. You have a source. Now, if you can just get someone to read it for you, you're all set!!

So yeah, whether you meant to or not. It's plagarism.

You seem to be on here all the time. No wonder the US auto industry was in such a mess. Or, are you one of the non-necessary personnel that got laid off, and since you're gone now, they're rebounding??? I guess it really was the management and not the assembly line workers that were the problem.

Bob -- please leave Amy alone. The post is about Gov. Romney. As a former resident of Massachusetts, you might have something to add to the debate, but instead you throw out "psychiatric claptrap" and "delusional moonbat" . Does this mean that you cannot defend Gov. Romney? That you cannot support him? Gov. Romney does have a problem in that he wants people to defer to him. Maybe because of his name, his title, his wealth, his gender....he gets annoyed when people don't follow the "rules" that allow him (Romney) to hold the floor. He would be better served by learning to diffuse situations rather than speak over people and insist on his right to speak.

President Obama dealt with his father's absence by turning his pain into a book, Dreams from My Father which was pretty creative strategy, if you ask me. I think Obama's maternal grandfather was a stabilizing influence in his life, and his stepfather also helped him find his way. As to Barack Obama Sr, he obviously contributed some extradinary intellectual genes, even if he didn't offer his son direct guidance. You can see those genes in play in the President half-siblings, who all seem pretty gifted.

For Pete's Sake Mitt has another name - Manic Mitt.

The man came completely unglued in the last debate. He was rattled because Scary Perry dared to challenge him. Manic Mitt loses it when he is not in total control of the situation. He is the quintessential "control freak."

One other note about For Pete's Sake. Has anyone else noticed that in casual situations he always has a few errant strands of hair dangling over his forehead? It is always the same - watch for it! I bet he spends 10 minutes each morning arranging those few wisps. But remember - it is only in town hall or other casual settings. In the more formal debates every hair is neatly in place!

so marc, i recall no one promoting the elimination of SS or medicare, just making it sustainable.

Please do try to keep up with what is being said rather than just trying to use strawman arguments.

Didn't we go over this exercise last week? Why not report on Obama's Executive Order on Student Loans, another program the Government has taken over. Why not report that the savings amounts to $4 - $7 per month. That sure will stimulate the economy...what a joke!!!

Its called a loan...thats how banks make money. If you don't want to use a loan, join the military, safe for College, or borrow it elsewhere. But of course you have no problem paying for those who default right?

Oh no! Don't make "Romulian Romney" angry America. He might call out his Birds of Prey to politically swoop down to attack anyone who speaks up against "Romulian Romney." The GOP Clown really turns into a political spoiled GOP spewer if he does not get his way. One of "Romulian Romnies" many personality flaws. Is that he just can not admit that he does not know what he is doing. That is fact!!
