'Occupy' movement becomes Mass. Senate race fodder

The Occupy Wall Street movement has become the latest issue in the high-profile Massachusetts Senate race.

Republicans are criticizing Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren for taking a measure of credit for the protest movement.

“I created much of the intellectual foundation for what they do,” she said in an interview with The Daily Beast. “I support what they do.”

The National Republican Senatorial Committee’s spokesman Brian Walsh blasted Warren in a statement.

“Warren’s decision to not only embrace, but take credit for this movement is notable considering the Boston Police Department was recently forced to arrest at least 141 of her Occupy acolytes in Boston the other day after they threatened to tie up traffic downtown and refused to abide by their protest permit limits,” Walsh said.

Democrats countered by highlighting the amount of support Sen. Brown has received from Wall Street donors.

“It’s no wonder that Forbes called Scott Brown one of Wall Street’s favorite senators and it’s no surprise Brown’s cronies are attacking any candidate who wants to fight for the middle class,” Matt Canter, communications director for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said in an email to First Read. "Scott Brown has a long record of shaking Wall Street down for campaign contributions after doing their bidding in Washington. For instance, at the same time Brown was working to water down the Wall Street reform bill he was shaking down the financial industry and their lobbyists for campaign cash. In fact, Brown has collected more money from Wall Street than just about any other member of Congress outside of New York.”

Recent polls show public support of the movement. In the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll earlier this month, 37% said they supported the protests, 18% said they did not. In the latest Time magazine poll released on October 13th, 54 percent of those polled view the protests favorably. But an AP-GFK poll found 37% say they are supporters, and 56% say they are not.

Warren is the favorite in the Democratic primary, hoping to face off against incumbent Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown (R), who won seat formerly held by the late Sen. Ted Kennedy (D).

Oh My.

Another one of them got a little Al Gore in her.

Fantastic, then she can own the movement. I hear there was a huge accord reached today with the drummers.

The drummers really are the heart of the thing. Down to only drumming from 12-2 and 4-6.

Now let's just hope Elizabeth can get her finances straight. To "forget" $100k in income is something.

Or does she got some Gietner in her as well?

Brown will have to deal with his issues in the main election.

Good one Forrest.

If they are like the OWS gang here I'd be surprised if even a third of them voted.

So Feisty, shall we compare the amount of $ Brown got from Wall Street to Obama?

Why is it you libbies are so blind to the amount of money and influence Obama gives to Wall Street?

In fact has any president ever had as many in his cabinet? Gietner, Summers, Daley. In his administration?

Most transparent, ethical president EVAH!

Naa, just a whore like all the rest.

No - I'm familiar with Elizabeth Warren and what she has said in the past - such as;

There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody. You built a factory out there — good for you!

But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that maurauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did. Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea — God bless. Keep a big hunk of it.

But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.

But to be crystal clear Obama is as you say Forrest the "Queen Madame of the whole damn whorehouse."

That, and Ms. Warren, like little Timmy Geitner, seems to have serious issues reporting and paying taxes.

You or me leave out $100k of income we got big problems, right Forrest?

And if Obama is the "Queen" won't the Occupy Wall Street gang be not all that into him?

watched the mclaughlin group on pbs this past weekend and some of the reported demands from OWS were...

    Government paid healthcare for all

    $20/hr minimum wage.

    A guarenteed living wage.

Debt forgiveness of student loan, credit card and mortgage debt.

I realize that these were obviously cherry picked, but what politician is going to promote these and still expect to get elected? Seems that the OWS group needs to learn what the KISS principle is.

What are you going to do Spanky that is the system the SCOTUS just made a bad situation worse, I would think campaign finance reform would be right down the Tea Party alley, a perfect second plank. Nobody wants to go to an equal amount of neutral financing provided to candidates for public office like some other countries do. Get on the Republicans in the house, and the SCOTUS about making some changes, but as you said whores every one. You think a guy like Santorium could make what he is skiming and paying his kids, if he had to be employed in the private sector, this guy is not a serious presidential candidate but he makes a nice living off the system, nobody wants to change. As you say whores, every one of them. Right now it is what it is and Obama's game is pretty strong.

I'm sorry to say that if I forget to claim $100,000 I would have forgot to claim damn near all my income.

      * * *

      Spanky,

You beat me to this one. Al Gore invented the internet and Elizabeth Warren organized Occupy Wall Street. Personally, I would rather have invented the internet. "Occupy" is a moment in time -- this is Woodstock for folks who missed Hendricks on vinyl and for people too young to know the line from the Beatles "I'd really love to turn you on" is not about sex, but about turning someone on to drugs.

Peace and love, flower children. Liz, can't wait to see you sporting the tye dye shirt and John Lennon glasses.

BTW, now that you have "organized" this movement, what is the objective, exactly? At Woodstock, it was to get stoned and listen to music.

I cant believe that is something she would be proud to run on. I can see winning in San Francisco on that platform but can she really win the Senate even in a liberal state like Mass? She is the poster child for NEVER believing that all of us need to be accountable for the personal choices one makes in life. Now Obama wants to bail out the student loan industry, next it will be that we all get bailed out of credit card debt. We can all point to the individual situation where someone through no action or choice of their own got into financial difficulty but to bail out an entire population for the choices we all make is just wrong. Instead of protesting wall street, why arent these students protesting government for creating a collegiate education system in which tuition goes us 5 times faster than inflation and nobody says colleges should be economically rationalized. Instead when a kid decides to take on $200k in debt to go to Harvard instead of his local university, we should bail him out. Nobody forced students to take on big loans, nobody forced credit card holders to take on debt. Elizabeth Warren always blames the person who provided access not the individual who made a choice.

Did we all lose the concept of personal accountability in this country?

Why shouldn't she take "a measure of credit"? She didn't claim credit for starting the movement, merely for voicing much of the underpinnings of Occupy. Elizabeth Warren sparked the desire for fairness and against the greed and corruption of a few; she fought for the middle class and her message has resonated with them. As for the GOP, their angry response from the likes of Walsh spells F-E-A-R. Occupy far exceeds the Tea Party and it reaches across all party lines. The GOP should be afraid because their plan for a corporate takeover of government is unraveling by the day. They see the masses marching in the streets and not just in one city but nationwide; they see Ohio, Wisconsin voters pushing back against their agenda. Odd, the party that has used fear to keep people in line is now afraid of Occupy and the 99ers.

Jody, You are so right. the F-E-A-R is so palpable that it's laughable when the GOP says the Boston police had to be called in. Had to be???

I'm not familiar with the story but I'm willing to bet it is more police brutality than violent protesters.

        That is a big mistake.

It happened during the civil rights movement against peaceful protesters and emboldened the cause of the movement.

Jody's just doing her usual shill routine for Obama/Democrats.

Occupy confuses the Democrats. They want to be a part of that Movement, it fits the illusion of their so called "core values", but in reality, they are more connected to the Occupiers enemy, Wall Street, then the GOP even is. Even the Occupy bunch is too far to the left for the Democrats. They hate everyone.

And as for Warren, well, she's as close to a socialist without calling herself one as she can be. For her, it's Big Government today, tomorrow, and all the time. She worships government using her fake "I'm for the People" line to cover for her "Big government should control everything!" beliefs. And Lizzy, you're part of what the Occupiers call the 1% sweetie. A Limousine Liberal if there ever was one.

Occupy can march in the streets all they want. They represent no one but their malcontent selves. The Unions don't much like them either, but still fund them because they (the Unions) have really run out of ideas on how to get noticed.

As for Jody and the gang on Team Blue - they bury their collective heads in the sands [cause Obama is not all up in Wall Street everyday, and is not literally surrounded by them] and yet are surprised by what is happening.

I still recall during 2008 when the economy was crashing all around us and George Bush had a "deer in the headlights" look----the one person who I always felt made sense out of the complicated situation we were in was Elizabeth Warren. She could be counted on to explain what was going on, put it in a historical context and suggest a future direction.

And note that she is not advocating violence but rather stating that she understands the feelings of the 99% about the 1%

Go to ocuppywallst.org and read some of the comments, its very interesting.

my sarcasm does get the better of me at times. And true, there does seem to be a bit of a divide among the people. In wartime, which this is, divide and conquer is an extremely effective tactic, and this government has it down to a science. Hell, they've even been successful at dividing neighbor against neighbor, black against black, as evidenced by the media glorification of the "thug lifestyle." If people don't get their @!$%# together soon and realize we have a common and very defined enemy, it'll be too late. Let's hope it's not already.

The only sustainable economic model is one that is always growing. Because our population is always growing. Does that make sense? Strive for equality of opportunity. But equality of outcome? That can never be guaranteed. Or we will lose the ultimate goal -- freedom -- that this movement is striving for.

        Democracy vs Plutocracy

Making this about Capitalism will ensure that we remain divided among the 99%...

If you have ever been to Cuba...you know that even in a land where there is socialism...there can be exploitation....

If you have ever been to DR ( the complete opposite of Cuba )...you see that in an extreme capitalistic society....people still suffer from exploitation...

a mixed style of economics is best...and we have that....the problem is PLUTOCRACY infecting our government...

we know the occupy protesters are protesting many different things

The week before last, Alan Grayson appeared on HBO, on Real Time with Bill Maher. The subject was Occupy Wall Street. Bill’s guests mocked the Occupy Wall Street protesters, complaining they didn’t know what the protest was all about.

Grayson had a different point of view:

Grayson: " Let me tell what they're talking about. They're complaining about the fact that Wall Street wrecked the economy three years ago, and nobody's been held responsible for that. Not a single person has been indicted or convicted, for destroying twenty percent of our national net worth, accumulated over two centuries. They're upset about the fact that Wall Street has iron control over the economic policies of this country, and that one party is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Wall Street, and the other party caters to them as well. That's the truth of the matter, as you [Bill] have said before. And . . . ."

P.J. O'Rourke: "Get the man a bongo drum, they've found their spokesman!"

          Grayson: "If I . . ."

P.J. O'Rourke: "Get your shoes off, get a bongo drum, forget where to go to the bathroom, and it's yours."

Grayson: "If I am the spokesman for all the people who think we should NOT have 24 million people in this country who can't find a full-time job; that we should NOT have 50 million people who can't see a doctor when they're sick; that we should NOT have 47 million people of this country who need government help to feed themselves; and that we should NOT have 15 million families who owe more on their mortgage than the value of home, OK, I'll be that spokesman."

Sort of sounds like "everything you are against." Bob.

May want to re-think that "So I have nothing to fear..." thingy.

          jist sayin'

          Anyone who isn't a liberal when they're eighteen, doesn't have a heart.

Anyone who isn't a conservative when they reach 35, doesn't have a brain.

Warren has been a voice crying in the wilderness for a long time. It's good that her message, of taking the side of the financial consumer against the big corporations, has finally broken through, in the form of the Occupy Wall Street protests.

I remember reading about her viewpoint back when the financial crisis first broke. Here's a good profile on Elizabeth Warren:

More power to Elizabeth Warren - we need more politicians to embrace the Occupy Wall Street movement.

It's seems to be some sort of negative suggestive tone in the Republican response - regarding the movement.

Just because the Police did their job; doesn't mean the Occupy Wall Street protestors didn't do theirs.

The is America and we have the right to Protest to affect change; suppressing these protest is unAmerican no matter who does it!!!

Based on the Republcans response to this and others alike - they would have one think that because Martin Luther King and other civil right leaders were arrested doing their protest...their efforts were somehow illegal and unworthy?

BS - Occupy Wall Street is a worthy cause and getting arrested is an unwelcome necessity!!! not a form of disgrace(no one want to be arrested; they want to be heard and changes made) - as the GOP/TP Wall Street cronies would have one believe.

The Police are doing their jobs and need to be WELL respected... It's a honorable job. But soon they too will realize they are among the 99% and Republican policies are causing major lay offs for their counter-parts in other States and Cities.

Basically - don't think for one moment that you are not being used; just like the rest of U.S.

            TRUTH - not CRAP

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

Nothing would be worse for this country than seeing Elizabeth Warren in charge of anything. I don't need her to read my bank statments, credit card rules etc. Why don't you liberals just set up your own financial system? Go down to the Occupy Wall Street hobo camp and pass out big easy to read credit card offers. Set up an employment agency and see if you can get "Mr. Hoops in his ears" a good paying job. Go find the "Marketing guy that got laid off 5 years ago and get him a job in Marketing for the new Occupy Wall Street Visa Gold Card.... Obama's rhetoric has convinced this band of missfits that some body else is responsible for them being stupid and unemployed. 90% of the country is still working, 90% of us still pay our mortgages on time. I'm sure 90% also beleive standing around with a bunch of idiots beating a drum would be a waste of our time.......

Progressive Power has been warning the American People for years about the GOP/RNC connections to big oil, and the greedy Wall Street Bankers. The economic policies of the GOP/RNC are totally economically suppprted by the Koch Brothers. The GOP/RNC "Hoodlum's On The Hill" lead by the "Bonehead Boehner Bunch" and "Crazy Cantor's Cronies" have made one thing very clear. The "Brainless Bush" Tax Cuts will be expanded. Economically, all safety nets for the poor, disabled, and the elderly will be removed. The GOP/RNC in the House did this by voting to destroy Social Security. Then the GOP/RNC voted to give more tax payer subsidies to big oil, and the idea of regulating these subsidies was not even an option. The big Wall Street Bankers were told that they were too big to fail. The GOP/RNC planted this economic seed and the Wall Street Bankers just added the water. Socially, the GOP/RNC has made it very clear that any educated society is dangerous, and all educational funding will be eliminated. Just listen to "Scary Perry" and the other GOP "Carnival Of Clowns." They want to promote ignorance, by promoting the destruction of Public Education. As for the issue of Women's Rights?? These will be removed by legislation over time. Getting ready to vote yet America?? I hope so!!

If someone payed 50,000 into roads, and you payed 5 into roads...who owns the roads? Heck, if you pay 500 and pay another guy's paycheck, who in turn pays 5..who owns the roads?

Posturing aside, there is and always be an aristocratic class. Those who own the majority.

In the US, the dream is to join that class.

But don't lie about your ultimate goals. Everyone wants to be in the aristocracy, in the end. The decision-makers.

Call it what you will, but that's the painful truth. And you can't have an aristocracy without having peasants/serfs/freemen. Whatever you want to call them.

The sad facts of life. People will always starve. People will always be in want. It's the nature of being human...and the laws of economics.

Supply and Demand. Without a finite supply, there is no demand. Same reason the AMA only accredits x amount of doctors per year, and the same reason why little Joe won't get fed tonight.

Sad but true, ladies and gents.

Do you stay up late reading Malthus? Or a twisted view of Darwin? It may be true that in most societies there is some form of "super haves, decision makers." But, a healthy democracy requires social mobility which the US is dangerously close to losing. We are now far behind the countries of Europe including the UK which has a classed society. We've just been lucky so far in that it's not in our make-up to take to the streets. But the spring of 2012 is coming. Are you confident that on our current partisan path that many will wait to Nov. 2012? Wait if the see the election is already rigged?

If only the teabaggers would read and heed your writings. Then the peasants/serfs would know with whom they have cast their lot. But before you become too smug, remember that there is no such word as "payed." The word is paid.

"Scott Brown has a long record of shaking Wall Street down..."

(Nice twist here on the truth)

Haha, these Dems are such hypocrites.....

"The world’s top-earning hedge fund managers have bankrolled almost exclusively Democratic campaigns."

"The top 10 highest-paid hedge fund managers in 2009 have dished out campaign contributions almost only to Democrats."

"Over their lifetimes, those managers have given almost $33 million in campaign contributions to Democrats, according to research by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) and that is based on data maintained by the nonpartisan CQMoneyline."

".... The contributions went 98 percent to Democrats and two percent to Republicans."

I said when this "movement" began that they would all bail once the weather turned cold---they have no backbone and once the free handouts are gone they will be gone as well. Sucks to be right all the time, LOL.

Good for Elizabeth, shame on you Republicans-we know you are for the 1%. Most of the Democrats work for the 1% as well. the Wall Street protesters will show the "representatives" true colors.

First Read again shows its bias.

When a GOP candidate says something controversial, it is headlined, often snarkily to make them look extreme.

Yet the totally idiotic and buffoonish statement by Liz Warren is not headlined; only that the Occupy movement is an issue in the Senate race. No kidding!

This idiotic statement may just have lost her the race, even in liberal Massachusetts.

That's alright Bob, we will tolerate your bias against MSN's bias. I somehow doubt though , that you would feel the same about my bias regard Fox News bias.

Trust me, if you want clean "unbiased" news don't go to a major US network! Assuming there is, on this earth, a single human being without bias.

Much has been written lately in attempts to explain the Occupy Wall Street phenomenon. My take comes from a Psych lecture in college I attended forty or forty-five years ago. (How time flies when you're having fun!).

Two mental states that humans apparently cannot tolerate over time are fear and frustration. At some point humans suffering from either will attempt to remove the source of the fear and frustration or remove themselves from the circumstances that create the fear of frustration. The old 'Fight of Flight' theory.

Although it is always the younger generation who are the active players in situations like this, I would like to suggest that those of us who are retired and on the downhill side of things are also fearful and frustrated. Some of us have our pensions and savings but our Social Security and Medicare are terribly important for peace of mind if nothing else. Threats against these programs cause fear in a large segment of society,

Frustration is the only word to describe the antics of Congress. Again, those of us who have been around remember the statesmen of both major political parties who were elected and re-elected because they were thoughtful, serious and concerned more about their country and the people who elected them than they were about the next election. Which is why they were re-elected until they decided it was time to retire.

So, listen to an old(er) person: The fear is real. So, too, is the frustration. Denigrate those who are displaying these emotions at your own peril.

I enjoy listening to the BBC on night talk radio. I alternate between the BBC and another late night talk

radio show. I love hearing about other people in the world, and how they approach solving their

problems. I think I learn something valuable here. I am an open minded person. I try to see both sides

of a story, but I am not a dumbass either. Bias is an emotional problem that I wish people could get over

and open up their minds to other possibilities. Learn from mistakes. Progress beyond the hype and BS of

                      narrow-minded people.

Bias, like judgement, beliefs, and opinions are how we shape the world around us and filter the immeasurable amount of information we are daily bombarded with.

I am honest enough to admit that i am biased, use judgements, and have opinions. I also struggle to see these constructs as tools rather then ultimate ends. When a tool does not fit the situation it is best to find a better tool.
