COLUMBIA, SC -- When it comes to campaign spending in South Carolina, Jon Huntsman has had -- so far -- the worst return on his investment.
Huntsman, who received only 1% in an NBC/Marist poll of South Carolina likely Republican voters, spent the most amount of money per percentage point in that poll.
According to campaign finance report analysis by The State newspaper, Huntsman has spent $277,744 -- meaning that one percentage point came with a hefty price tag. The actual primary, of course, is still 90-plus days from now.
Michele Bachmann spent the second most money in the state, $83,156. Her 5% showing in the poll means she spent about $16,631.20 per percentage point.
Herman Cain and Mitt Romney, who were neck-and-neck in the poll, are getting the best bang for their buck, at least right now.
Cain, who got 30% in the NBC/Marist poll, has spent $54,119 in the first-in-the-South primary state, which works out to $1,803.97 per percentage point.
While his campaign downplays South Carolina’s importance, Romney invested the third biggest amount of money in the state, $73,119. Finishing four points behind Cain, at 26%, his spending per point was $2,812.27 -- about a third more than Cain’s.
Rick Perry spent slightly less than Romney in South Carolina ($72,431), but his 9% in the poll cost him $8,047.88 per point -- almost four times as much as Romney’s spending per point.

Instead of teleprompter for our drinking game, I propose we change the magic word to GNOP primary...
Whatcha think?
Don't believe anything coming out of South Carolina. First of all Who cares? It is the birth place of the Tea Party.
It is the last place in Education in the WHOLE nation, and they have rejected any kind of stimulus money offered by the government to help education, just because the governor is an arrogant republican that belongs to the tea party.
Not only that, but Pelion, SC is the birth place of the KKK, and it still goes on strong in there...It's say that they burn crosses for fun...-I can not confirm this, though-
They have the SECOND place in unemployment after Michigan...No wonder Boeing moved their company to pay HALF to their employees of what they were paying in Seattle. AND of course without a UNION to protect them, as part of the sweet deal "to bring jobs to SC" according to those arrognat DeMint and Haley.
How can anybody with any sense believe them?
"Not only that, but Pelion, SC is the birth place of the KKK, and it still goes on strong in there...It's say that they burn crosses for fun...-I can not confirm this, though"
Too bad Democratic Senate Majority Leader and KKK Grand Dragon Bob Byrd isnt around to ask about that. He was in Senat eleaderhip for many years, though he didnt wear the sheets while in Congress. But the KKK since its inception has been a subset of the Democratic Party, so you should call and ask the Dems, someone probably would know..
I doubt what you are saying is true...However, They have the great example of Strom Thurmond...He was always for segregation, until it was discovered that he had a black daughter...Sorry. Better luck next time.
Bob lotsanumbers:
I think you know better than that. The Democrats of the Old South are the Republicans of today. The KKK found a home with bigots regardless of political party, but the primary hold was on right-wingers.......then and now. Used to be southern Dems were right wingers, today the right wingers of the south are Republican.
You know, I read you posts because some times you have information that is worth consideration and goes into shaping my views. You lower yourself when you come here with nonsense like that.
David, there are unfortunately hateful racists in our midst, who can come from any political party, or any race.
The Democratic Party hasnt really changed its stripes. It is the Party of Government coercion; the State was used to oppress blacks and forcibly divide us based on race. Liberals like Woodrow Wilson were virulent racists, and enforced segregation, and legislated Jim Crow laws.
The Democratic Party of George Wallace, who demagogued for votes based on racial enmity, is the same today; except the names are Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.
The South has changed for the better as the old line Democrats were replaced by Republicans. In fact, today there is a mass migration of blacks from the failed liberal racial policies in the inner cities run by Democratic machines. Blacks are moving to the South, to good jobs and a better life. The migration of African Americans to Southern states like Georgia puts the lie to your narrative that Southern Republicans are the same as George Wallace.

Not to South Carolina........The good rotten Republicans are still the majority...and the State still is at the bottom of the barrel.
Isn't it a surprise that the tea party candidates are launching they dumb campaigns in here?
Get a grip! You need to see the documentary: Corridors of Shame.....Don't take my word for it.
Bob,188...
good to see you tonight.
First off, all political parties have different faction with in them . Some of the differences is do to regionalism, social philosophy, views of US role in foreign affairs etc.
to call the Democratic party s a whole as a party of coercion is hyperbole. As David Walker said in the 40's and 50's the Southern Democrats were for segregation based on states right argument many times. Northern Democrats were more populist defending labor rights, farmers and growing voice against segregation. Hubert H. spoke out about the Southern Democrats in a speech at the 1948 Dem. Convention.
It was LBJ a Southern who signed the Civil Rights Act after much heavy lifting with his fellow Southern Dem.
In 1968 ,Hubert H. Humphrey ran as the Democrat. George Wallace, a racist Southern governor claiming the state right rhetoric also ran. Richard Nixon, the Republican, easily won the electoral count. George Wallace took all the southern states except Texas in the electoral vote. He received 13.53% of the popular vote.
So to label the Democratic party as racist or the party of coercion is like saying the Republican party are all members of the Tea Party movement.
Since 1980, the winner of the GOP South Carolina Primary has gone on to become the GOP nominee.
We will see if it happens again!
Wow! So a state still practicing Jim Crow decides who the GOP nominee is? No wonder African-Americans vote Democrat. Who wouldn't?
Ana,
you lie and smear. Ever hear of black GOP SC Congressman Tim Scott , or Indian American SC Governor Nikki Haley?
Oh my AnaB - Jim Crow, really?
Alert the ACLU.
Wait if that's true, where the hell is Holder?
Oh yeah, that little Fast and Furious thing-y has got him occupied.
Bob18...
Its my understanding that Indian American governor Haley is East Indian, just so you don't confuse the issue.
Its all they've got, Spanky. Lies, smears, innuendo- the ship is sinking, and they're grabbing for dear life onto the anchor.
Hit a nerve? it's because SC is a perfect example of why the Justice Dept. needs to decide on voter suppression attemps by the GOP. A black and Indian American does not excuse your states behavior.
So where is Holder on this AnaB?
Or has he figured out he can't chase down all of our silly bogey men?
Deep end, AnaB. AnB, Deep end.
Asking for an ID before voting is not voter suppression.
Opposing a basic ID requirement, however, is supporting potential vote fraud.
It is no different than getting prescription medication or cashing a check -- asking for a photo ID is quite appropriate for voting.
Hey friend!
This is major voter suppression.
I've got your back. You go girl!
In Wash state you can get a picture ID at the drivers license place. It`s an ID, not a license. They`re marked differently. It can be used for any Place an ID is needed. Maybe it would be a good idea for the Dems to start aa campaign in their districts to help people get such a card. Would be a cheap way to counter the Republicans` voter suppression.
Speaking of South Caroline, I see where the old governor, Mark Sanford, is being hired at Fox News as a contributor. Will he contribute to the decay of the station, which in my estimation is already trash, or will he give his take on what it is like to cheat on your wife. They just never cease to amaze on who they will hire at that garbage dump.
JoAnn, will FOX be furnishing Sanford with women as part of his contract?
it doesn't matter who comes out ahead in the carolinas... the current crop of republican presidentiables are a "no contest" against the debonaire prez obama....
I am sorry but I think the story line is going to get better and more interesting withH erman Cain leading now. How are white little old ladies on social security going to repond to a black man who says soical secirty is "immoral" after they and their husbans paid it it for years and are now derviving the benfits of their work? Are the southern black men going to flock to Cain's cause when he point they die young so that they never get recieve social security benefits?
And why do they die? The lack acess to health insurance which HermanCain opposes them having because they havepre-existing conditions.
On a larger note,is south Carlina going to consider it self a giagantic "empoerment zone" and exmept itself from minimum wage laws as Cainnow proposes?
Is anyone ever going to ask Cain what replaces the social security payroll tax that funds social security, because the Cain plan eliminates the payroll tax. Is the national sales tax going to be "lockboxed" so it can't be raided for non social security uses?
Is Caingoing to surmount his commentthat "we shouldn't telly ou what medical decisions to make in your life" comment that even the Natioanl Orgiazation of Women could endorse? Is Caina closet pro -chiocer?
Whydoesn't Cainwant to know the name of oneof the "stan" countires? After all Pakistandoes have 250 nuclear weapons? Is Cainfit to be commander in chief? South Carolina has more miltary bases than any other state in the nation. Does Cain know enough to knowe whento send trrop into battle-and when to keep them out.
Huntsman sounds reasonable and intelligent, but then he had so many strikes against him before he even got up to bat. First, no name awareness. Second, when people did learn who he was, the last line on the resume said Obama Administration. Third, he's another Mormon.
How many strikes do you get again?
South Carolina has been right every year since 1980 - the winner in SC has gone on to get the GOP nomination.
This is a bit off topic - but I have a question about the importance of New Hampshire in 2012.
To me, the only way New Hampshire becomes relevant in 2012 is if Mitt Romney loses it. We all expect him to win - based on the lop-sided polls in his favor. So if he wins, so what?? But if he loses - that is a BIG story.
The two most recent NH polls have Romney at 44% and 43%!! His closest challenger is Herman Cain at a meager 12%!
Romney with 44% and 43%!!! Name ANY other state where Mitt is scoring higher than in the 20s!! No such state exists!
Doesn't that blatently suggest that in NH Mitt is seen as something of a "Favorite Son?" He was a neighboring Governor and owns a home in NH. So he SHOULD win it!! No surprise if he DOES win it!
But if he loses it after holding such a staggering lead - or only barely ekes out a win - then that would be a very big deal. He lost to John McCain in 2008 - the sentimental fave who had captured the hearts of the NH GOP in 2000 - and it was devasting for Mitt.
But this campaign cycle there is no sentimental fave - there is only "Favorite Son" Mitt - who is currently at 44% and 43%!! If he wins - ho-hum. But if he loses - or only marginally wins - then it will rightfully be a huge upset.
I think that's right, assuming someone other than Slick Willard wins Iowa. Then NH will be just an expected, undramatic, the guy who was governor next door kind of thing. If Romney does manage to win Iowa, then I'd expect the press to play NH like a party coronation.
And like you said, the state becomes exceedingly significant if Romney finds a way to lose there.
From an Article on DB:
If you'd told me in January 2009 that the banks would pay us back the entire bailout and then some, that the auto companies would actually turn around with government help and be a major engine of recovery, that there would be continuous job growth since 2009, however insufficient, after the worst demand collapse since the 1930s, that bin Laden would be dead, Egypt transitioning to democracy, al Qaeda all but decimated as a global threat, and civil rights for gays expanding more rapidly than at any time in history ... well I would be expecting a triumphant re-election campaign.
This was before we got all our troops out of Iraq and taken out Gidaffi.
The Mitt Romney plan - return to the Bush policies
