Rubio pushes back against Post article

In a Politico op-ed, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R) aggressively pushes back against a Washington Post article charging that he might have embellished the story of his parents' migration to the U.S.

His beef with the article: Its suggestion that being associated to the post-revolution exile community was politically advantageous to Rubio.

That is an outrageous allegation that is not only incorrect, but an insult to the sacrifices my parents made to provide a better life for their children. They claim I did this because “being connected to the post-revolution exile community gives a politician cachet that could never be achieved by someone identified with the pre-Castro exodus, a group sometimes viewed with suspicion.”If The Washington Post wants to criticize me for getting a few dates wrong, I accept that. But to call into question the central and defining event of my parents’ young lives – the fact that a brutal communist dictator took control of their homeland and they were never able to return – is something I will not tolerate.

[snip]

The real essence of my family’s story is not about the date my parents first entered the United States. Or whether they travelled back and forth between the two nations. Or even the date they left Fidel Castro’s Cuba forever and permanently settled here. The essence of my family story is why they came to America in the first place; and why they had to stay.

Meanwhile, Dr. Andy Gomez, an assistant provost and senior fellow at the University of Miami's Institute for Cuban & Cuban-American Studies, emailed several political reporters to take issue with the Post's report.

The Washington Post seems to have very little understanding of the Cuban exile experience and what it means to be an exile. Marco Rubio’s family was forced to stay in America because they refused to live under a communist system. That makes them exiles. It makes no difference what year you first arrived. The fundamental Cuban exile experience is not defined according to what year Cubans left, but rather by the simple, painful reality that they could not return to their homelands to live freely.

Poor Marco!

The faster the rise the greater the fall!

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy! lol

Keep in mind this is not the first time Marco has had a run in with integrity issues!

What's that Marco?.....

Only for your family (Cubans) does this apply, not for the folks from Mexico?

Do it for the children......Marco, you are indeed a hypocrit!

I think what is worse than Rubio's obvious lie and manipulation is how ANDREA MITCHELL COVERED UP RUBIO"S LIE on her show today.

Stop sucking up to the right, Andrea. Rubio's lack of integrity just rubbed off on you.

Liberals are funny. A poorly written article from a Castro sympathizer without a shred of truth or fact in it and the drones eat it up. Here's another take on it.

A member of the Tea Party contingent lied or, at least, embellished the truth for their gain?!? Surely that cannot be true. After all, they are the most righteous, religious and honest people in politics. Just ask them.

Washington Post= despicable liberal shill.

Again and again they publish drive by hit jobs aginst the GOP, fact free.

Has the Post ever followed up with its false allegations against Rick Perry? Where is the picture of the rock that had racist writing? Where are the sources that can show Perry ever did anything wrong regarding that rock?

Same with this hit job on Rubio; the Post doesnt bother to give facts, just smears.

The facts are not in dispute, his parents arrived before Castro took power. Even Rubio now admits it.

What you have is a bold faced lie, either by Rubio, or by Rubio's parents to Rubio. Either way, the guys a piece of crap for either lying or throwing his parents under the bus.

Look it's not the end of the world by any stretch, but he does get one Pinocchio charged against him. The larger point is nobody that claimed Obama did not have enough experience, can justify considering putting this kid at this point a heartbeat from the presidency. Later down the line he may shine, but VP, you will have the Sarah Palin problem and many people would just say the VP pick is so weak (in consideration of that is the guy if God forbid anything happens) that now you can not vote the presidential half the ticket. Marco Rubio is not ready for VP, not even close, I think he would get tore up, and he would have to start prep school right now in a far more serious fashion than Palin ever did, if the young man was to get tripped up by that mean old Katie Couric, he would be finished. If the young man is as good as some say it's not fair to him to put it on his young political shoulders to pull the mess they made for themselves out of the fire for republicans.

Pushes back??? He LIED. He's a Republican. That's what Republicans do --- LIE. The smartest thing he could do is shut up and let the story calm down but no --- when Republicans are caught lying -- they have to lie about the lie.

I haven't heard anyone accuse Rubio of making it up.  But he has "enhanced" his resume'.  The worst kind of fabricator is one who does it wohen he doesn't even need to.  Rubio's story, the truth, is compelling enough.  But in the biography on his own website, he moves the date his parents moved here by two years cuz it seemed a bit more dramatic if Castro already had power.

I don't know what the other posts have said about this so if I am repeating this sorry. Have you heard that Rubio claims his parents fled Castro? WRONG......THEY FLED 3 YEARS BEFORE CASTRO CAME TO POWER. They were rich Cubans who saw a rebellion coming and converted all their wealth and moved to Miami. This was in 1956 --CASTRO DIDN'T COME TO POWER UNTIL 1959. They saw a rebellion coming and decided to get out before the rebels could take it. ANOTHER REPUBLICAN LIAR BUT AREN'T THE ALL?

If politicians were "hurt" by their "embellishments" ( lies ) of the truth.....we would have already witnessed the downfall of many Democrats....(Too few downfalls were witnessed.)

I can't resist just 5 of my favorites.......

Anthony Weiner: " I never sexted pics of my "weiner" ! Someone hacked into my account!" (TOAST, LOL)

Maxine Waters: " I never funneled tax dollars into my husband's bank!"

C.Rangel: " I wasn't aware that I should pay taxes on my vacation house, and I didn't know that I shouldn't have 3 rent controlled apts."

Bill Clinton: "I never slept with that woman."

Ted Kennedy: " I'm sorry that woman died at the bottom of the lake in my car. It wasn't my fault."

Do not under estimate Rubio - he is more dangerous to this country than Boehner, McConnell, Cantor and Castro combined plus he supposedly represents the great police state of Florida - the only state with more wackos and nut jobs than California.

It is ironic that Sen. Rubio's parents--fleeing the Crony Capitalism of Baptista's regime--would up in the land of Bush-Codina Realty, Mastec, Blackwater, Halliburton, Gallagher Insurance, big oil, etc.

This is no brief for the thugs ruling in Havana for the last 52 years. (When that regime put up signs saying "Socialism or Death!!", EVERYONE wrote underneath, "What's the difference?")

I live in Florida, and keep up with politics here a little, and I sure had the IMPRESSION that Sen. Rubio's parents left Castro's Cuba.
