Michelle Obama joins the president on bus tour

On day three of the president’s bus tour to promote the American Jobs Act (or, perhaps more accurately, components of the American Jobs Act) Ground Force One pulled into Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

With President Obama was his secret weapon, the now-popular first lady Michelle Obama, who was on hand to announce a new veterans’ jobs initiative. According to the White House, “The American Logistics Association and their 270 affiliate companies have committed to hiring 25,000 veterans and military spouses by the end of 2013.”

The first lady called it the “largest coordinated effort by the private sector to hire veterans” that’s happened in years.

“This commitment puts us a quarter of the way toward reaching the president's challenge to the private sector to hire or train 100,000 vets and military spouses by the end of 2013,” she continued.

Michelle Obama's presence at the fifth official event of the bus tour (The president has made a bunch of unannounced stops along the way.), coupled with the Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell's (R-VA) attendance, caused somewhat of a tone shift in the president’s remarks.

At most stops, the president has been unrelenting in blaming congressional Republicans for inaction on his jobs bill, and while at the military base, he relayed some of his frustration when he talking about the veterans benefits in his jobs bill.

“So far Congress hasn’t acted on this proposal,” he said. “But I want you to know that I’m pushing them a little bit.”

But the president made no calls for the audience of military members to take to their communications devices, as he had in recent speeches, to tell Congress how they feel. Absent too were the jokes about how he is breaking the American Jobs Act into smaller parts so Republicans can understand it.

The president and first lady also had a short private meeting before the event with McDonnell and his wife. In it, the governor thanked the president for his support of veterans (in military-rich Virginia) and pushed again on the issue of federal support for Louisa County, which was affected by the earthquake in August.

But that was just the sideshow to the main attraction of the day: the first lady. This was her first appearance at an American Jobs Act event with the president, and she kept her focus on today’s announcement, veterans and her husband.

And President Obama kept a little of his focus on her.

“I also want to thank my extraordinary wife and Dr. Jill Biden, our second lady, for leading the effort to support and honor our military families, and making today possible,” he said. “Give them a big round of applause.”

After the audience applauded, the president looked over at the his wife and said, “She does all this, and she looks cute.”

So AM - I just read an article that an OWS protester got raped at a Cleveland rally by her tent mate.

This of course is horrible, and the guy needs to be shot, but what now, and what should the parents of these kids [many are college kids] do or say by way of precaution?

Seems she was told to share that tent with the bad guy. They were OWS's tents and sleeping bags.

Now this was in a public park, but that's a large degree of control that OWS exercised.

Does OWS/it's organizers face civil liability for the rape? You think OWS has any liability coverage?

Her first time in an RV ever. I suspect it is Michelle's first time as well.

Although I doubt the Obamas will be sleeping in many rest stops, dining at Hardee, or stopping at the Giant Ball 'o String.

AM - of course the universities are liable for the acts of the football team. They get hit all the time.

I raise the subject as one of professional interest. I have defendenedseveral civil suits involving rape claims against Landlords, parking lots, and bars.

But since my earlier post I have seen the OWS responses. Not exactly what I had hoped for. One guy said - no way anyone here would ever rape, so she must have been a plant and/or a liar, and from some reporters - that is was too bad and would likely look bad, and cause the movement to suffer.

Now, I don't know about you, but those are not the reactions I would expect from a movement like this. From a University, form an institution, sure.

Blaming the victim is bad AM. This is a tragic crime. Now is not the time to be throwing the victim under the bus. They sure didn't do that at Duke.

Anna Molly,

As a retired military veteran (retired in 1980) that took advantage of the GI Bill to complete my college education and also took the 10 points added to my civil service test score I am all in favor of any program that helps veterans and their families.

However, if you talk to most employers they will hire veterans, not for a tax credit, but for the following reasons:

1) Military personnel are well trained in discipline and following orders.

2) Have had experience in a work environment and have in many cases been in leadership positions, supervised others and been responsible for equipment valued in the millions of dollars.

3) Have proven they can and will follow directions with little or no supervisor.

4) Veterans have been through hardships that those who have never served, especially in combat, would have a hard time understanding.

It appears that a large number of companies have already agreed to hire 25,000 veterans and their spouses, and I don't believe the tax credits had any bearing on their decision.

Even I liked to see Reagan take Nancy's arm when going up stairs, or for that matter Bush assisting the Saudi king--heck I'd even prefer Romney joking around with his wife and turning backward to "show the side people don't see" to all the ugliness right-wingers represent these days. Teapublicans have devolved into a negative, petty Party for sure. They want to destroy anything nice, beautiful, or good.

That's BS about conservatives supporting the troops. Who's been against paying them more, or getting them equipment they need, or health care when they come home? The Democrats, and Michelle Obama is one of the biggest supporters of the troops and their families.

I believe you mistake me. That wasn't my point. My point was merely that, if Obama is for it, the Right is against it.

I would never dream of questioning the qualifications of veterans as you laid them out. I honor and thank you for your service, and I'm glad to see you got the benefits to which you are entitled. That's how most liberals think.

Seems to me that works both ways, Spanky. Allow me to repeat your words, in case you've forgotten:

Sorry to burst your bubble AM, but the it is the libbies who don't seem to be all that interested in hiring vets, at least until the last few years.

As I said, where is your evidence?

Still waiting, Spanky.

But mine isn't all speculation, as much as yours is downright misrepresentation. Whenever it suits their political purposes, conservatives consistently -- and callously -- hold up Veterans' benefits. For example:

http://www.squidoo.com/whitleyhodges16

NOVEMBER 3RD, 2009

Senator Tom Coburn has placed a hold on a veterans benefit bill. Over thirteen military and veterans groups have pressured him to change this position.

Thirteen major military and veterans groups have joined forces to try to force one senator - Republican Tom Coburn of Oklahoma - to release a hold that he has placed on a major veterans benefits bill.

Senate Bill 1963 is the Veterans' Caregiver and Omnibus Health Benefits Act of 2009. He used political trickery in the Senate to place a hold on the bill.

Coburn's staff said he is worried about a new and unfunded benefits bill. He wants to hold it up for his own amendments.

I remember one time in particular, still during the Bush administration, where John McCain was complaining that a bi-partisan vet benefits bill cost too doggone much and didn't create any incentives for people to stay in the military.

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=4652517&page=1

But the bill, which would dramatically increase educational compensation for American troops, has run into some unexpected resistance, both at the Pentagon and now from McCain, who has remained silent on the issue, saying he had not studied the bill close enough.

Pressure had mounted on McCain to support the bill — a veterans group, which backs the legislation, delivered a petition to McCain's Senate office, signed by 30,000 veterans.

Thirty thousand veterans supported the bill, and McCain opposed it? And the Pentagon, too? As others might say, WTF?

AM - we conservatives love vets for all the reasons sfcret spoke to. But some, and I know a few in positions that hire/make hiring decisions detest the military and don't like the way ex military behave [not free thinkers/artsy/whatever].

Well, you said yourself that there shouldn't be any hiring preferences for vets, remember?

No?

But as for a program giving incentives to hire vets, or unemployed or whatever, that is a bad idea.

You really ought to have one side of your mouth consult the other side before you post, don't you think?

Oh, and if you are going to call out famous Presidential lies you forgot the classic, "I don't recall" that every President has used. And you might want to mention "mushroom clouds", that was a pretty big lie.

The right-wing tries to make his campaigning an issue....just like the fist-bump, lapel pin...blah, blah.

Anybody see the news clip of Weeper of the House on the golf course (ritzy) in California?

Bachman and Paul running around spewing garbage and lies...oh, but that's OK..........

Give 'em hell Barry!

Yes, he's campaigning and why shouldn't he be! The Republicans are getting hours and hours of free campaign time with the never ending debates! And no he never said he wasn't campaigning, in fact Joe Biden came out last week and totally acknowledged that they were! So drop it!

errr diane, doesn't a potus have other responsibilities, as in governing? Perhaps you think that obama is such an effective delegator that he can be out on the road all the time.

Of course I was joking about obamas delegating abilities as he has prtty much ignored the advise from his advisors since day 1.

so you Obama supporters agree. Obama should reimburse the tax payers for his obvious campaign tour which he has said is not a campaign tour.

Sure, tony...

just as soon as you collect from bush jr & cheney for us.

Sounds to me like the teapublicans are scared to death; all their spouting off about "any Repub candidate can beat Obama in 2012" means ONLY if he doesn't campaign... "stay out of the race and we will elect a Republican Mr. President."

Hahahahaha!

Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden are such a great First and Second Lady combination. They represent a great combination of intelligence, class, beauty and compassion for all Americans. This was certainly missed.

    No, just true blue Obamabots.

I suspect their emotions just get the better of them. They feel compelled to make a comment, then after they realize how silly they sound they likely feel embarrassed.

Amy, perhaps you can respond to WCA's well put question?

Amy - I pay close attention to politics but don't recall that Mrs. Cheney ever did anything unsavory.

Really, if you have to attack the wife of a candidate you are reaching. It is... beneath all of us regardless of political affiliation. Unless, of course, the action of the spouse is severe/outrageous enough or the spouse is directly involved in political action of their own.

That said, I guess I'll admit to hypocrisy about Marcus Bachman. The whole ex-gay therapy thing is, to me, repulsive and does help explain the oddity that is Michelle Bachman. I don't have a problem going after Marcus, but then I'd go after him even if his wife wasn't running for office.

I remember that Lynn Cheney did NOTHING! Jill Biden has been actively involved in several initiatives to better our country along with Mrs. Obama. I thought there used to be a an unwritten civility code that you didn't take on the First Lady and the family!?! Oh that's right, civility went out of style in the last decade! Laura Bush was a lovely lady and I don't hold her choice of husband against her, but her reading campaign was a bit tepid compared to Move American and Support our Military Families!

Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden have had initiatives to help address the needs of military and their families and held many events together and separately for them. I cannot remember a similar initiative regardless of the cause from the past administration. I think that is what Amy is referring to.

Wow, things must be slow for the top 1% today. You guys are really looking for a fight over a non-issue. Maybe Amy meant she thought about it and remembered that she was "not memorable"...nothing creepy, scary or unsavory. Just saying.

Try to look at the cup half full for a change. Not everyone is attempting to offend. Yes, good advice, don't let your emotions get the best of you.

Really Steeler - you can't remember so then they must not have done anything?

I was almost with you Paris [and by the way both Ms. Obama and Biden at 1%-ers], but then Steeler had to chime in.

A simple google search might dis-abuse you Steeler.

Da Noid, you have to remember President Obama can not do anything right for these people, he is not one of them, he does not belong to their cult of rights. They know what they are saying is bull but it fits their need right now. They are afraid right now and should be. If they do not win this one they are done for, they will be run out of the country maybe even catch a missile or two. I know I have that red button around here somewhere. Oh found it.

Please remind us all, TTS, when a past president disgusted a campaign trip (for reeelction) as a tour to get support for a bill.

It is good to see our First Lady campaign with the President. There is nothing wrong with this at all America. Yes President Obama is doing several things at once, which is confusing the limited mental capacities of the GOP/RNC. Yes America! The President is informing the people about what he is proposing in the American Jobs Bill. This Jobs Bill is going to help almost all of America. All Presidents since Washington have been natural campaigners, and this will never change. It would be very shocking if any President ever stopped campaigning! Every President is an ongoing student of politics, and President has it down to a tee. President Obama speaks clearly, thinks clearly, and is intellectually disciplined. It is good to see our President being Presidential, professional, rational, and responsible. These are good things that as citizens we demand from our President. Anything will not be tolerated. That is fact!
