Dems pressure GOP to support jobs bill component

Senate Democrats renewed their efforts Tuesday to pass a portion of President Obama's jobs bill that would provide $35billion to states to retain and rehire teachers, firefighters, police and first responders.

A group of Democratic senators were joined at a press conference at the Capitol by American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten to press for Senate passage of the bill that they say would save or create 400,000 jobs.

Weingarten was passionate about the dire straits facing schools that have fallen on hard times.

"The bottom is falling out on budgets all across the country," she said.

She added: "I've been all across the country since September, since August. When we say that there are 300,000 fewer educators since 2008, you see this in school districts throughout the country ... I've seen it with my own eyes throughout the country"

New York Sen. Charles Schumer (D) rejected Republican leader Mitch McConnell's assertion that this was just another attempt by Democrats to bail out states with stimulus spending.

McConnell said on the Senate floor this morning: "Bailouts don't solve the problem. in fact They perpetuate it. Yet all we get from the President and Democrats in Congress is 'Do it again - or else!'"

"the number-one thing we want to do is get the teachers back in the classroom for the kids," Schumer responded. "And I think to say helping those kids is a bailout is just totally not taking into account what those kids need. It's awful to say that."

Schumer said Democrats are open to dropping the .5% percent surtax on millionaires to pay for the bill if Republicans have a better idea. He said he believes Republicans would be opposed to the bill even if Democrats stripped out the millionaire tax.

Aides to Senate Democratic leadership say the first votes on the $35 billion dollar bill wouldn't come before the end of the week at the earliest.

It's a "landslide" alright. All downhill.

    GT you are kidding right?

Obama admin has done more to line the pockets of his corporate schills than ever before. Have you heard of Stimulus package? NONE of the money made it to those who needed it, it allowed the executives to get their big fat bonus, but via tax payer money instead of profits.

Only people profiting off of the Obama free ride are supporting him. Honest hardworking people aren't being fooled, and will NOT vote for him.

My representatives are putting a halt to this nonsense like I requested.

      Thumbs up

Gee, Eric Cantor initially said the Reps could stand behind some of the bill's plans! Gee, another about face from the presumed King of Judah. McConnel criticizes but fails to bring a Rep plan to the table. The Dems are right - any piece of legislation they place on the table is obstructed by the Gopers and Tpers, who fail repeatedly at appropriate debate, citing ideaological differences, the hell with the pragmatic and utilitarian approach to Democratic processes. 9-9-9 is just brilliant Cain. A flat tax of 15 on everyone and everything that says its not anyone - no deductions allowed, not one. States to determine their level, but to exceed Federal rates. Balanced budgets become mandatory for the FED and all the fifty states, allowing enough time to place the amendment in place and for adherence. Immigration give-aways cease immediately. If you are a non-citizen you pay for everything, i.e. education, hospitalization, baby making expenses, everything is covered by their cash. All social services end for undocumented immigrants - period. Restructure FED regulations, create the dream world for new corporations, new manufacturing and re-emerge as a leader in world technology and production.

Thank you GOPers and TPers for the flatness of your perceptual abilities, which are riight up up there, or should I say, down there with the proverbial Ostrich!

The GOP (Great Obstructionist Party) will let Americans suffer as long as it takes to prevent President Obama from gaining any political traction. Everyday Americans who are suffering unemployment, home forclosure, living in their car, and strugling to survive one day to the next are little more than Political Fodder to the Republicans! Wake up America Republicans only cuddle the mega rich of America and love Corporate America; everyone else is little more than TRASH to Republicans.

And I thank them for it!

The Dems are destroying the country with their poorly devised "plans". Even the Dems aren't supporting this bill. A few are caving into Obama for political reasons.

All those things you mention have gotten WORSE since Obama took office, and he walked into a full majority in Congress. He didn't need any GOP votes. He got all his plans passed, AND THEY FAILED!! THANK YOU GOP FOR PUTTING A STOP TO THIS MADNESS!!!

Hey did you know that the Republicans tried to vote on the bill weeks ago, but HARRY REID prevented it. Hmmmm, so who's the real obstructionists?

You have been exposed, the truth shall not be covered up by the Regressives!!!

Dems pressure GOP to support jobs bill component

Republicans pressure Dems for a jobs bill component that they can support!

Why is this so hard for Dems/liberals to understand????

The President deliberately put forward a bad plan to make the GOP look bad, and then the Dems get all upset when the GOP actually won't cave in and support it.

So Dems/Libs you ask, what can we do? How about sitting the Dems and the Republicans down in the same room, and work out a bill both sides can support!!!

This is the first administration that I can recall that refuses to include any bipartisan cooperation when drafting the bill. They write it, and then use the sky is falling tactics to force it's passage.

Well, if they would write a good bill, the sky may not be falling!

GOP hates public school teachers because they want their kids to only go to private schools and have the public schools shut down.

wtfwwus, whats the point, no matter WHAT the dems propose the GOP is going to say no you moron.

            Reply#64 - Wed Oct 19, 2011 8:31 AM EDT

The point is if the Dems stop proposing bogus bills solely for the purpose of creating posts like yours, we may be able to get something done.

The so-called jobs bill presented by President Obama was written without any input from the GOP, and was designed to be unacceptable to the GOP, so they could use it for pure political purposes. They never expected it to pass, that's why so many Democrats are opposed to it.

You are the moron (since you want to go there, I'll play your game) for falling for their obvious ploy. Apparently GOP'rs are smarter than you, because they are not being fooled. Your first line is obvious that you are a card carrying member of the left, and no matter what happens you will blame the GOP, and excuse the Dems of all the horrible mistakes they have done in the past 3 years.

THANK YOU GOP FOR HAVING THE COURAGE TO SAY NO TO THE BS THE DEMS ARE DOING!!!

Correct me if I’m wrong but are these type jobs not normally funded by the State? I see this is a pathetic political move by the left to temporarily increase their job creation numbers, lower the unemployment percentages to make that NEODEM in the White House look like he is not a total failure. How long would this funding last? My math is 35,000,000,000/400,000 = 87,500 per individual minus healthcare premiums and retirement plan money and all that. So what are we looking at 1.5 years of temp employment? I would have to agree that any employment is good employment regardless of the amount of time, but this is still just a political tool for the Democrats, but I can see where it would be effective. (Political stunt = YES), (Pathetic Attempt by the Left to get the unemployment numbers TEMORARILY low enough to get POTUS re-elected = YES), (Should the republicans vote yes? This republican says yes. People come before politics even when the opposition is using them as human shields which both parties do with regularity).

You are absolutely correct. This isn't a jobs bill, this is a workfare bill. In order to keep these "jobs" the Feds will need to keep funding it, or the jobs will go away.

No real jobs will be created, this is market driven, and this will not help the market, it will actually make it worse, by putting us 1/2 BILLION more in debt.

Both parties are bad, but the incumbent is so blatent in this political ploy that I cannot believe anyone is falling for it.

Just had another thought which happens occasionally. If the States let these teachers and first responders go because they could not continue to budget for them, then this will put the burden on the States to let them go again. Not that this is a horrible issue they should just put that it is a Temporary Position not to exceed 1 year, or 1.5 years whatever the magic number is in the job description.

What need to be done is to quit out of control spending. OBama is pressing on as if we are the riches Country in the world. We are not let me remind you. Every dollar we spend is borrowed. Yes, 43 cents of every dollar we beg to keep the OBama nightmare presidency going.

Time the American people wake up to the fact OBama is a communist and like every communist he will destroy your jobs and your families. He will later provide you with a little red book like MAO of China extolling his virtues. He has none!!!

How about this: make everyone pay their fair share for their retirement and benefits. Of course, the public unions will hate that idea. Govt. needs to get out of the education business.

How can people not see that this so called Jobs Act is only a temporary jobs/stimulous package that WILL NOT WORK! It is Obama campaigning in over drive to get votes at the expense of Americans. He is "buying" favors of the unions again!

Obama is NOT serious about Americans working again. He wants half the country on the Federal Government Entitlement/Handout" program while the other half pays for it !

If Obama is re-elected............3/4 of the country will be on the "Federal Government Entitlement/Handout" program while 1/4 of the country pays for it.

Calll this so called jobs bill what it is..........It is a Stimulous plan to buy votes, continue class warefare, demonize the GOP and nothing more!

Backhouse and others on here are absolutely correct. But the voters in those states need to swamp their representatives (using this term loosely) with e-mails and letters and letters to their newspaper. they need to sign petitions and impeach these communistic political terrorists. the voters need to get involved instead of being afraid to vote en mase. I personally wrote John Tester and I asked the GOp reprsentatives in my State John hoeven why he voted the way he voted. I do not expect a reply, But I will persist in writing him again and again. They (the GOP & Tea-Party Terrorists) can't handle the truths and their agenda is to make slaves of us all and/or jailed. This is communism people. Wake Up you getting screwed!

OK! Let the Bush tax cuts expire! ALL of them! Despite the fact that the left calls them tax "breaks for the wealthy" (and you believe them without checking the facts) only 22% went to the top 2%, the group that pays over 50% of individual federal income taxes. Only 700-800B went to this group out of 3.7T over 10 years. If done fairly, almost 2T should have gone to the top 2%!! Even your savior, Obama, when he allowed them to be extended, called it the largest tax cut for the middle class in history! Which is it?! I guess it depends on who you are trying to please at the time.

"Democrat is the party of the working class people"??!! It appears to be the party of the freeloaders and anyone else who thinks that if you work hard and become successful, you owe it to someone else!!
