Senate Democrats renewed their efforts Tuesday to pass a portion of President Obama's jobs bill that would provide $35billion to states to retain and rehire teachers, firefighters, police and first responders.
A group of Democratic senators were joined at a press conference at the Capitol by American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten to press for Senate passage of the bill that they say would save or create 400,000 jobs.
Weingarten was passionate about the dire straits facing schools that have fallen on hard times.
"The bottom is falling out on budgets all across the country," she said.
She added: "I've been all across the country since September, since August. When we say that there are 300,000 fewer educators since 2008, you see this in school districts throughout the country ... I've seen it with my own eyes throughout the country"
New York Sen. Charles Schumer (D) rejected Republican leader Mitch McConnell's assertion that this was just another attempt by Democrats to bail out states with stimulus spending.
McConnell said on the Senate floor this morning: "Bailouts don't solve the problem. in fact They perpetuate it. Yet all we get from the President and Democrats in Congress is 'Do it again - or else!'"
"the number-one thing we want to do is get the teachers back in the classroom for the kids," Schumer responded. "And I think to say helping those kids is a bailout is just totally not taking into account what those kids need. It's awful to say that."
Schumer said Democrats are open to dropping the .5% percent surtax on millionaires to pay for the bill if Republicans have a better idea. He said he believes Republicans would be opposed to the bill even if Democrats stripped out the millionaire tax.
Aides to Senate Democratic leadership say the first votes on the $35 billion dollar bill wouldn't come before the end of the week at the earliest.

It's interesting to read the anti-Jobs Bill threads. The right wingers on this thread are very accomplished at telling the world what's wrong with the bill, the president's strategies, and the agendas of Democrats in general. Bully for them.
But like the right wingers in congress they have no solutions. Nothing. They complain about what the Jobs Bill won't do, but have no solution to put in its place. They talk insistently about how short term strategies won't work, but have no long term strategies to implement.
They are content to let the American people suffer, if only to win an election. That is their only strategy. Let the economy continue to suffer so we can replace a sitting president with one of our own.
How damn patriotic of you all.
Buck they don't care about you, you do not agree with them so you have no worth. The whole idea behind the republicans is to make this a republican state. That is what karl rove is all about, that is what boner is all about. Clean out the democrates so there is no one to disagree with them they want an autocratic ruling class for America.
There are plenty of Republican "solutions" passed on to the Democratic controlled Senate where Harry Reid "sits" on them. Real jobs in this country are created in the private sector. Obama has done everything in his power to restrict the private sector in words and deeds. You certainly have the Democrats "talking points" down pat which are reinforced by the liberal media. Seems you don't remember the shovel ready and recovery summer claim which costs almost a trillion dollars. We needs real jobs, that will produce tax revenue, not jobs that are temporary and created by tax dollars and just result in national debt which is out of control and will cause a real financial burden down the road.
Tony the private sector has had years to create jobs and that has not happened has it. The solutions passed down to the senate always include tax cuts for corporation and the wealthy job creators and that has not worked for 10 years. So try something else that might work any ideas or just retreads.
Tony: Tis the season is right. YOur republican friends have offerered nothing but tax cuts and defunding of regulations. We have had enough of their lies and frankly, their crap. If they can't or won't work for the people, then recalls should begin. Get them out of office and put in people willing to work with this president. Remember your republican friends all agreed that they would turn down $10. of cuts for $1. of tax revenues. And you believe these people are sane? Really?
Hard to believe there really are people out there that still buy the lies of this administration. An administration funded by Billionaires like George Soros, a guy that has always hated America. I understand why there are posts in-favor of this narcissist-in-chief, they are union members, welfare recipients and others that have never really paid their own way. Same reason there are the OWS, same type of losers doing these stupid acts are the same ones behind obama. Interesting that Soros is also behind OWS.........get the picture now?
.
Tis the season "The jobs bill was paid for"??!! You increase taxes on one group of taxpayers ( the group that already pays 38% of individual federal income taxes) for ten years to pay for 1 year's benefit. What happens in tears 2-10 when we need to raise revenues!? Tax the "rich" more or let it creep down to the middle class?? It makes as much sense as taking out a 10 year loan on a car that will last 1 year. At the end of 1 year you are still paying on the first loan but you need to take out another loan because you need another car!!! That makes as much sense as just doing something because you "have to do something "to add jobs
So the better solution is to sit here and do nothing and just wait for it to fix itself. It will not fix itself, I will refer to an earlier post you keep trying to shoot down solutions but yet offer none in place, who does that benefit and how. Answer that what ideas has the right produced that has not already been tried before and failed. Name one just one that does not include tax cuts for corporations or the wealthy.
Okay, you shot down their solution, what do you propose we do about it then?
Anyone...anyone...
"Tax cuts for the wealthy"?! I assume you are talking about the Bush tax cuts, only 22% of which went to the top 2% ( the group that pays over 50% of individual federal income taxes)!! If it were done fairly, almost 2T of the 3.7T over 10 years would have gone to the top 2%, not the 700-800B that actually did!! We already spent almost 1T for a temporary inprovement in the economy and now you want to borrow almost 1/2T more??!! you say the other side has no ideas? Your solution has been tried. What part of failure don't you understand!? We have to do this so we can say we tried??!!
TES you are repeating yourself with numbers just as twisted as your thoughts. I asked you to name one idea from the right to create jobs that does not include tax cuts and you can do no better than repeat your earlier statement. Here is your chance to show how much smarter you are then everyone on the left. Take a shot, come up with an original idea on how to put americans back to work without tax cuts they do not work.
OK At a cost of 800+B dollars we saved an estimated 1M jobs (temporary). That is roughly $800,000/job. We could have given money directly to the unemployed at $50,000/year for 2 years and funded 8M jobs! Besides these people would not be sucking on unemployment. With the financial difficulties cities and states are having, we could have found things for them to do. OH, no!! We can't do that because there are probably union rules to prevent it. And you ignore my earlier comment. Just because we need to to something, we can't just repeat the error!! And I'd like you to point out which of my "numbers are twisted"in my earlier comment. Just because you do not agree with me doesn't mean my facts are wrong!!
Sitting here doing nothing is what we need. We can fix some of the problems that hinder job growth, but this does nothing to fix the problem.
Why does this only apply to teachers and first responders?? Why can't they bail out hospital workers, county workers, janitors, state engineers, state accountants and everybody else on state and government payrolls??
Let's make it 300 billion so it lasts for ten years and not just 1. Let's add another 1 Trillion so we can get all of the other state employees in on the fix. If you are going down in flames make the most of it. Screw this bull $h!t 1 year fix.
And still, not one solution from the naysayers.
The right wing side of this thread reminds us all of right wing congressmen uttering the same thing day in and day out. And yet, they too have no solution.
They don't want to find a solution. It's not in their best interests to find a solution.
And yet, they call themselves patriots, true blue Americans, and defenders of the republic.
What a stale ass joke.
Buck they have no ideas and that scares the poo out of them, they have no idea how to govern other than to say no. No it won't work, No we will not raise taxes, No, NO NO. Scared little children and they want to lead this country where, they really have no idea, all they can do is prey about it and we still go nowhere. You pin them for ideas and they feed you poop because that is all they have.
Yeah, who needs bailouts for education, it's not like those kids will grow up to be future Americans or anything--
Okay, so no money for education, then what do the conservatives propose we do? Oooh, oh, I know, let's privatize all of education so then only the people with money can afford it, that's the ticket!
/sarcasm
Schools should be funded at the state level. Why only teachers, police and 1st responders? If you have to ask that question then you don't understand politics. The democrats are trying to grab the lowest hanging fruit to try and piece meal the whole bill. No deal! Many times doing nothing is far better than doing the wrong thing.
FactOfTheMatter
I think people picked up on the sarcasm but in reality the Republicans have passed "jobs" bills. They don't artifically create bogus spots that continue to need funding in the multi-billions every year but they are designed to get the private sector on a more stable ground. Lower taxes, less regulation and getting rid of Obamacare. You might not like them, just like we don't like your stuff but those would be a good start and you will find Harry Reid sitting on his ass refusing to bring them to a vote.
Just because your guy thinks his $h!t doesn't stink even though we are worse off then when he took office (his words not mine) although I do agree with him on that point. How can you expect cooperation when the Dems offer the same crap and pay for it the same way every time.
BTW why can't your guy stay in Washington and use some of the wasted taxpayer money he is using to campaign with to talk with the interested parties??
Just a though and no sarcasm meant.
So basically the conservatives retort is to fund it at the state level, and if your state happens to be bankrupt, well, I guess no education for your kids then.
Or did I miss a solution in either of REB or Jim's posts?
Look, I wanted Clinton to be President, not Obama, so stop acting like I care who sits in the White House. Answer the question please: What do you propose we do?
Tony, I can't count how many times I've heard the right talk about all the bills Harry Reid sits on.
The fact is the Tea Party promised a legitimate Jobs Bill during the campaign of 2010. They won. They have yet to introduce that bill. They have introduced bills that have never had a chance of passing the senate, the president's desk, or becoming law.
What the right wingers in congress have done is grandstand. Well, grandstanding isn't governing. Governing is based on compromise. It's been that way since we became a nation.
So don't tell us about bills that never had a chance in hell of passing. No one wants to hear it. It's rubbish.
And so I stick with my original assertion. The right wingers bitch and bitch but give us no solutions. None.
It's smoke and mirrors...simply cut taxes to zero on anyone making over $250K...on the presumption that they are the JOB CREATORS. Also, do away with all regulations that add cost to their businesses.
Make-up for the lost income by confiscating ALL income from the LOSERS - i.e. those making less than $250K/yr. They deserve to be punished for their failure...not rewarded through welfare.
Then, stand back and start counting. By the time you get to the end, the jobs will appear and all will be well. No problem.
The Republicans will do anything for the working man, except, get off his back. A worker voting republican, may as well help a thief rob their own home. Be a Rich Man's Whore, Vote Republican, Nuff Said
Almost all ecomonist agree that the stimulus was not big enough! In times of ecomonic downturn, when companies are not creating jobs, it's the goverments time to step in. We need good education in this country if we are to survive. We need our decaying infrastructure to be fixed if we are to compete, and also this will put alot of people to work. But who listens to the facts????
Spanky and others: You keep saying the Dems are sitting on legislation from the Repubs, but you NEVER prove what your saying. So I guess your just lying like all good Repubs do.Have you also forgotten that Bush bailed out the banks as well to the tune of 700 billion and when asked he said he would do it again to help the economy. When Repubs do it it's fine and dandy but if the Dem's do it there is hell to pay. It's just like McCain saying something about Obama's bus,but he doesn't say anything about the second bus for the Repub nominee.
Why are they wasting their time breaking this up, I will do the work for them. Republicans will not raise taxes, will not spend money to help average americans, republicans will deregulate wall street again, get rid of the clean air and water acts, get rid of pesticide and insecticide regulations, and build a pipe line through one of the worlds largest aquifers in the world(one which provides drinking water to 2 million americans and supports 20 billion in agriculture in the mid-western U.S.), it is also important to note that portions of land that the pipeline would be built on had a 4.3 mag earthquake in 2002. So this is how republicans plan to end the recession.
For all you libbys, these may not be your type of throw money we don't have at the problem type jobs bills or pay back the union type job bills that you guys try to pass but FYI below is a list of measures House Republicans have passed related to job creation:
Empower small business owners and reduce regulatory burdens:
H.R. 872, the Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act
• Introduced by Rep. Bob Gibbs (OH) on March 2, 2011
• Passed the House by a vote of 292-130 on March 31, 2011
• Senate has taken no action to date
H.R. 910, the Energy Tax Prevention Act
• Introduced by Rep. Fred Upton (MI) on March 3, 2011
• Passed the House by a vote of 255-172 on April 7, 2011
• Senate has taken no action to date
H.R. 37, a Resolution of disapproval regarding the FCC's regulation of the Internet and broadband industry practices
• Introduced by Rep. Greg Walden (OR) on February 16, 2011
• Passed the House by a vote of 240 to 179 on April 8, 2011
• Senate has taken no action to date
H.R. 72, a Resolution to direct committees to inventory and review existing, pending, and proposed regulations and order from agencies of the federal government, particularly with respect to their effect on jobs and economic growth
• Introduced by Rep. Pete Sessions (TX) on February 8, 2011
• Passed the House by a vote of 391 to 28 on February 11, 2011
• The Senate has not directed their committees to take such action
Fix the tax code to help job creators:
H.R. 4, the Small Business Paperwork Mandate Elimination Act

Maximize domestic energy production to ensure an energy policy for the twenty-first century:
H.R. 1230, Restarting American Offshore Leasing Now Act
• Introduced by Rep. Doc Hastings (WA) on March 29, 2011
• Passed the House by a vote of 266-149 on May 5, 2011

• Introduced by Rep. Doc Hastings (WA) on March 29, 2011
• Passed the House by a vote of 243-179 on May 12, 2011
• Senate has taken no action to date
Pay down America's unsustainable debt burden and start living within our means:
H.Con.Res. 34, a Resolution establishing the budget for the United States Government for fiscal year 2012 and setting forth appropriate budgetary levels for fiscal years 2013 through 2021
• Introduced by Rep. Paul Ryan (WI) on April 11, 2011
• Passed the House by a vote of 235-193 on April 15, 2011
• Senate has not yet considered a budget of their own
None of these will actually do anything to help the american people get back to work. I have read every single one of them. Deregulating clean air, clean water, pesticide and insecticide regulations, speeding up the process of oil drilling permits, and laying a pipeline through one the worlds largest fresh water aquifers is not going help many americans get back to work and the keystone-XL pipeline could cripple our mid-western economy if anything goes wrong. They are not ideas to get us out of a recession they are ideas that make it easier for large energy corporations to get richer faster.
I believe the Ryan Proposal has been voted down in the Senate.
On the others, were there any CBO analyses done that indicate how much money would be saved and/or how many jobs created?
I fact, do you have a link to ANY analyses done...even by the right wing think tanks?
There are always CBO analysis done, it depends on the bill and the people associated with the bill. For example, for Keystone_XL pipeline Transcanada estimates 20,000 US jobs while an independent study by Cornell ILR Global research institute estimates 2,500 to 4,650 temporary US jobs. So you have to do some digging. The truth is somewhere in between.
I saw two bills that might create jobs, Reb, but at what costs to the environment, more oil spills in the gulf? As to anything proposed by Representative Paul Ryan, it deserves to be shredded and used as kindling for a fire.
I keep hearing that the Republicans won't help the President create jobs. That is ot true, the Republicans will support job creation when it is paid for or benefits the American people not just a bunch of union workers. The problem with Obama is he thinks he is entitled to everything he wants. Remember he is running around the country saying "pass this jobs bill". Then when if fails he accuses the republicans of not being able to grasp the bills important.
A good article was published in the Washington Post about job bills and others that the President wanted that the Republicans have voted for and Obama has signed.
1) Patent Reform
2) Free Trade Acts with S. Korea, Columbia and Panama (according to Obama will create thousands of jobs) BTW, bill passed in about 10 days after Obama held it for 2 yrs, because he could not get democratic support.
3) Trade Adjustment Assistance - To help retrain people who lose their jobs because of the FTAs.
4) Highway Transportation Bill
5) FAA Authorization extension
All of the above bills create/created jobs that and done relied on a phony stimulus package.
Again I ask, if the cities, states, counties, school districts want to save jobs then let them raise the taxes locally and not ask for federal money. States and local governments have waste and fraud that can be eliminated just as the federal government does. If anyone thinks their community needs more police and firefighters and teachers get out and campaign for tax increases to pay for them, quit asking the federal government to bail you out.
His jobs bill would be paid for, if the United Norquist's of America would allow a %0.5 tax on millionaires and billionaires. Since I am a millionaire I find itoutrageous that they would not do that, %0.5 increase most definitely will not effect my way of life, and will not stop me from hiring people to work in my lab. It is simply ludicrous.
sfcret
All these people want to do is tax and spend. No brains involved in putting together a plan for the future. For them it is one year at a time.
The reason state and local governments don't want to raise taxes to pay for the police, firefighters and teachers is beacuse they will be voted out. Easier to live on the Federal dole.
Zach-2748439 - have you noticed that none of your jobs bills worked i.e. the stimulus et al. We are worse off than before all of the spending which has now added more to the debt and intrest repayment cost that ever before. Think about it. PS - you can still send in your 0.5% if you want. Nothing is stopping you.
First, it is not my stimulus. And Second if you go to politifact.com they have proven that the first stimulus did work and any statement saying it did nothing is wrong. The stimulus after WWII worked, Obama's first stimulus worked it created or saved millions of jobs. I understand what you are saying about the debt but this current bill has a way to be paid for, given your last statement you know how I feel about this. I don't believe in increasing taxes on middle and lower class Americans and state budgets are out of control, when a person doesn't have to pay anything toward their pension that is unsustainable and stupid. I also feel that debt is a long term problem and should be dealt with as such, there are a lot of factors that have contributed to our debt, wars, tax cuts, wasteful spending, and horrible money management in DOD and other agencies.
REB-
P.S. What would you do with %0.5 if i did give it to you? Buy things? Save it? Invest?
You are giving it to the Feds. Ask them what they will do with it. If it were up to me I would pay down the debt but that is just me.
good answer. But I meant you personally. What would you do with direct cash in your pocket?
I am getting close to retirement so I would probably save it. My wife who is younger than I am would redecorate our apartment!!
She wins all discussions.
So the Democrats push yet another faulted plan and whine when even they don't vote for it and blame the Republicans for its failure.
The Senate is currently 51 Dems, 2 Indies (that vote Dem) and 47 Republicans. This represents the thoughts of the American people. Basically feeling are split.
We are at the point in "Democracy" being defined as fair vote between 2 lions and sheep voting on what to eat for dinner.
Obviously the bills that BHO presents are not like by enough of anyone to pass. BO, figure it out. Quit shaking your fingure at "those TeaParty, slum lord Republicans" and come up with something that we can all agree on.
BHO's economic plan has screwed the nation and all (Dems and Replubs and Indies) know it.
Its funny when republicans say that BHO's economic plan has screwed the nation because with exception of the first stimulus all of his economic policies have been in line with the republicans. What planet do you people live on?
Zach - What planet do you live on. Everyone of Obama's so called jobs bills rely on tax increases and the republicans will not support tax increases.
BTW, if you are in fact a millionaire, which I doubt, you can pay your .05% or any other amount you want, if that makes you feel good. I think by all of your postings that you are between 20 to 35 yrs of age, liberal, and believe the government should take care of you from cradle to grave.
sfcret
You are dense, if you must know I am an Independent voter, I am in fact in my 30's and I started, own and manage an environmental testing lab and I am in no way expecting or needing the government to take care of me. Please step out of your bubble and think for your self. I came from a middle class family, went to public schools and am thankful for the system that got me here. Unlike many rich people I don't think I did it all on my own, I realize I could not have made it where I have without the system that is in place.
I used to be predominately republican in my views, now however I feel the party has gone way too far right, which in turn is making liberals go way too far left. DIVIDED WE FALL there is a common ground of logic and reason that is being trumped by ideology supported by false claims.
Zach - I have been thinking for myself much longer than you have. Personally I could care less how you claim you made your money, if in fact you are rich. Tell me how much income tax you paid over what was required. As I said you do know that you can pay more in taxes than what is actually required. So how much over the required amount have you paid? You are the one bragging about how you are a millionaire, put your 1040 tax return on here and prove what you say.
That is funny, I am younger and something tells me I am a lot smarter than you, Mr./Mrs. free thinker. I will not and cannot legally disclose the information you ask for to some random person on a blog. I don't care if you believe me, I have nothing to prove to you. As a millionaire, I was simply trying to express my opinion because I am sick of republican politicians and people like you expressing them for me.
zach - You are full of crap, there is nothing legally stopping you from stating your net income, deductions, and taxes paid. Even Warren Buffett published his income and taxes paid, which by the way proved he was wrong about paying less than his secretary.
BTW you still have answered by question, did you pay more in income taxes than required, if not why not. Personally I doubt you are any smarter than anyone else on these boards.
Let's see Zach, you say you have your own business and are a millionaire, self made. Yet in Feb 21, 2011, you said you work for the USGS, do oil and gas research as a government employee. You further state in Feb 2011 that you are low/middle class American. So what is it, middle class or millionaire? Have your own lab or work for the government? You do know your post go all the way back to Dec 2010?
Zach = busted you lying POS.
Come on GoP, pass something related to jobs and that doesn't have anything to do with abortion or gays. We're watching... And 2012 is right around the corner.
That's right, raise the debt limit so O-dumbo can spend more. Isn't it bad enough that since 2009 the United States has added more than $4 trillion in public debt since Obama took office, and the federal government has spent $6.6 million a minute during that time. The U.S. debt increased by an average of $4.2 billion per day. The total rise in that time breaks down to more than $13,000 in additional debt for every single American. The government has spent more than $9.6 trillion, about 60 percent more than what Washington took in. The country racked up as much debt in the last 1,000 days as it did in the first 79,135 days. (That's from 1776 to 1993. On the economic front, 2.22 million jobs have been lost. More than 2.4 million homes were repossessed for failure to pay mortgages. Thirty-seven states have higher unemployment rates. Washington has spent almost $380 billion on federal unemployment benefits. This is the worst administration in the HISTORY of America. Wake up and get rid of this IDIOT in the next election
With millions of people looking at years of no job prospects!, the budget deficit around 1.28 trillion dollars, and that interest growing every hour, something needs to be done that does not take ten years, or two or three years, time is running out something needs to be done now!
Some might say no more stimulus, but stimulus is what is needed to get the country back on track, and the budget deficit under control! also taxes needs to be raised, namely the Bush tax this needs to be repealed for everyone in order to get things moving, when things are back on track they could reform the tax system, broaden the base, lower corporate taxes, cut spending pay down the debt etc., but right now people need to have income to live.
one way to do this is to give these unemployed people five or six hundred dollars per week for two years tax free! and take around 28% from the top and give that not to be paid back to all the states as most needed to get state and city workers, teachers, police firemen, city workers etc. working at full capacity, this will create demand in the markets, and stabilise the economy, and with this 28% plus their regular money they take in it will help the jobs markets and small and big business!.
The 5 or 6 hundred dollars minus 28% would go directly to the 17 or so millions of people who will spend this money to live , stimulating demand in the markets, it will also help lift the real estate markets to this would be around 6 billion dollars per week for two years going into the economy, and it will be as if everyone was working zero unemployment w/o the taxes, allow these people to find jobs and work while they collect this money, and they will pay taxes on the money they earn , this will help the economy, withhold all other assistance from them for three years , and if they need help after that they can apply for it with strict guidelines possible eliminating some waste and fraud.
The money the gov., and states will pay to help these people with food stamps, housing, and unemployment dollars could be applied to help fund this plan, the bush tax cut when repealed will bring in more than enough to pay for this in the next five years, the federal gov. and the states could cut spending, and eliminate waste much better, with the unemployment problem out of the way for two years, they could easily pay the budget deficit off in that time without derailing the recovery, this would save them billions of dollars n interest that they are paying out on this deficit now.
If the gov. would start the infrastructure projects that are direly needed as theY implement this plan it will create work for these people who want to work, some of them could, go to school, the economy would grow, and become stable, and the legislator's could work on other important things like immigration, trade, etc. I hope someone can see how this plan could help the problem we are having with jobs, deficits, and the recovery, I hope this will give them an idea of how to do something like this in a better way than I am able to think about not being with actual figures, and other information to use !!!
One more thing! with all the money that will be going into the economy all business will make more money, the big companies are making record profits now, they can afford the Bush tax cuts being reinstated until the tax system is overhauled!!!
Dale, where does that money come from? Just print it? Inflation would run rampant? Tax more? Duh... bad idea. Tax "the rich?" Theft by any name.
Your idea is to just stick it to those who make more than $250K a year, and then "promise, we'll fix it..." Yeah, sure. That'll happen.
Taxation isn't "theft." It's what helps create your ability to have an income.
Paul W: If they repeal the bush tax cuts for only three years, it would be enough to pay for this, and enough to pay the deficit off, and it would not add nothing to the deficit! and everyone would be paying for it the wealthy and the middle class, then the money they would save, and the time, paying off the deficit, would generate billions of dollars in interest they would be saving.
this plan would stabilise the country, when the deficit is payed off they could reform the tax system, and and by this time the country would be paying more to the SS by more people being employed, it would start a chain reaction, that would lift manufacturing, and real estate.
it would be stupid not to do this!!!
dale- I actually agree with you. The key to our plan however is opposed by those on the left. You said repeal the Bush tax cuts. Liberals are very careful to add the addendum "on the rich". I actually believe most conservatives would be fine with raising taxes if they didn't know that the money was just going to be wasted by the government.
johnr123 - put that in an e-mail to Grover Norquist. You'll be banned from the Club for the thought.
You are, of course, right. But, I don't suppose Congressional Republicans will heed your advice...they'd rather lose an election on the "principle of the pledge."
Johnr123; thanks for the positive comment, the money in this plan would do its job no matter who in government would want to waste money! we need to be very careful who we vote for, and most of the time we have the records to help us decide, this problem has been coming to a head for many years, and right now many people in government is trying to fix these problems, its not easy, and it wont be done over night!
And both sides need to understand that we the people will try to vote out whoever, on either side that does not do their jobs.
Although I agree the top 5% probably should pay more lets understand some basic economics. The government DOES NOT create wealth, it only redistributes it, I.E. Welfare, food stamps, unemployment etc. As a society we have decided a long time ago that wealth redistribution was socially correct, I.E. In some ways SS, Medicare and Medicaid. As a conservative I have no problem helping those less fortunate. It is called being human or whatever. But make no mistake, increasing taxes does not in the literal sense of the word increase wealth or jobs. The government does not create jobs except those jobs that create no wealth. I.E. the depts of education, energy etc. These types of government jobs create no wealth. To create wealth (hopefully a little bit for everyone) you need jobs that create a product that that can be sold for a profit. I.E. shoes, food, cars, houses etc. When you take money or create impediments to entrapaneurs (sp) I.E. small business owners, tv makers etc. in order to increase wealth distribution you do only that. Distribute wealth from those who create jobs to those who don't. As a true conservative I advocate both increased taxes for the top 5% and cutting spending. I.E. Pork Barrel spending that does nothing except transfer wealth from the tax payers to a select few. Why do we spend money to some grant to figure out why pig farms stink. Yes, that happened in 2011. So liberals please understand, the government does not create wealth it just makes us slaves to 535 members of congress and their whims. Conservatives please understand, as Americans we are generous and we will take care of those who cannot take care of themselves. However, no new taxes until we fix the spending problem.
Check it out: the AFT is there supporting a bill that would shovel money into the unions, all in the name of public welfare. Oh golly! It just makes me cry!
I know this is hard to understand for a lot of people but the government could confiscate everything, 100% of the assets of the top 1% in the country. That is not just income but everything they own and we would still be running a deficit. Is that hard to understand? They could then take 100% profit from the corporations and we would still be running a deficit. Of course that would be a lot of money to distribute out to all those people who just can't get over their jealousy but then what do you do the second year? Those businesses would now be closed, those evil rich people would now have nothing to contribute and the money is all gone. More spending is not the answer unless the question is how do we destroy our country? That may be closer to the true agenda of more people than we would like to admit to.
It's not an accounting issue; it's an equity issue. If you don't understand, I strongly suggest you take all of your money and leave the country as fast as you can.
stone, your mentality is a good example of our problem, you think it doesn't matter if we spend ourselves into oblivion as long as everybody is equally impoverished. It really sounds like you are in the wrong country. Our country was founded on the principle of giving people an opportunity to succeed. By saying it is an equity issue you sound like you would be much happier in a purely socialist country where everything is divided equally regardless of how hard one works or sacrifices. I'm assuming that since you have a computer and internet access you have more than a lot of people. Why don't you sell your computer, give up your cable TV and cell phone and use that money to make someone with less than you more "equitable."
Johnr123; the wealthy is part of this country, the country is in A recovery, millions of good, hard working Americans are fighting for their lives, they have millions of children who are falling behind, socially, etc. all this will cost untold amounts of money if it continues, we can face the problems and solve the problems, or we can run and hide our money, and try to be the only one who survives when its all over, this is the greatest country on earth! that's my belief, and we can do much better, we need to stand up and be A part of the solution, not run away and hope it will all work out.
The wealthy and the middle class should be proud to do their part to get the economy back on track, read the plan above and think about it the country needs everyone to work together, and solve this problem.
dale- I agree with you. My problem is the posters here and on other sites who act like the wealthy in this country snuck into their houses and stole the money they have. The majority worked hard, sacrificed and risked to get where they are. They now pay the lion's share of government revenues and arguably get the least amount back but they are demonized as if they did something wrong. Solutions to our problems, in my opinion have to involve making the government less wasteful. The solution on the left seems to be just confiscated more, hell, they have it and I want it.
John - No...the equity issue isn't about giving YOUR money away or dividing the wealth equally, it is about understanding that being an American means a lot more than your net worth. And, about working together to solve problems that are common to us all. Greed...is passe.
The polls show that American voters will support cuts in spending even if it means taking some cuts in social security and/or medicare...but they will not take one dime in cuts unless the most wealthy amongst us are also willing to take a small increase in their taxes. That's the equity issue...and I'll repeat, if you can't understand that, if I were you, I'd take my money and run.
The Republican's threat to block the debt ceiling increase has already cost us a downgrade in our credit rating by S & P. Republicans have said that the national debt issue is so important, so critical, that it rises to the level of national security.
Then, they block a jobs bill that reduced the debt over ten years by $6 billion...i.e. virtually deficit neutral, over a temporary 5.6% hike in taxes on incomes OVER $1.0 million...that impacted between one and two tenths of one precent of the top one percent of income tax filers.
Sorry...you've cried "wolf" once too often. See ya at the polls...if you haven't left yet.
Johnr123; its understandable! for you to feel that way, its not fair! but many worked hard and lost everything, we cant worry about what should have been we can try to fix it now and put regulations etc, in place so it does not happen again, have to go but I do see what you are saying!
Some of these posters are playing games, and don't have a clue! over look them it will catch up to them!
Keep up the pressure Dems. If these phonies are so determined to destroy the middle class and our American future, them we the people have a right to know exactly who they are. I love that Ed Schultz is running their names throughout his show. Evey msnbc show needs to do it. I dare them!
Stone6, You do have a way of saying it like it is, The Republicans are worried about the debt! ha ha ha !
That made my day! I wish I had your understanding about what is going on, have to go your right on top of it!
some Republicans should even begin to see through their own party at this point!!!
The GDP is the broadest measure of the national economy and directly indicates the nation’s ability to service its debts. In fact, the White House budget office historical tables portray much of the data as a percentage of GDP, because that is the best way to truly compare such numbers over time.
If the chart were recast to show how much the debt went up as a percentage of GDP, it would look pretty bad for Obama after not even three years in office. In fact, Obama does almost twice as poorly as Reagan — and four times worse than George W. Bush.
Reagan: plus 14.9 percentage points
GHW Bush: plus 7.1 percentage points
Clinton: down 13.4 percentage points
GW Bush: plus 5.6 percentage points
Obama: plus 24.6 percentage points
(Note: We derived most of these data from table 7.1 of the budget office historical tables, which gives end-of-fiscal year figures, so they do not quite match up to presidential terms. Obama’s figures are based on the GDP: public debt ratio as of June 30, 2011)
Re
So...add all the Republican totals; deduct the Clinton negative number from Obama's positive number and compare the results.
Actually, I am joking...unless you understand the composition of Congress, the issues the country faced, etc., etc. simple comparisons don't mean much...and forget economic "theory." Presidents from both Parties tend to do what they must do.

That's a little extreme bob - the government "creates wealth" by emphasizing certain sectors of the economy over others, through tax law (loopholes), and tariffs (yes, we still have tariffs), and in dozens of other ways.
Take Reagan. Reagan saw an opportunity to both beat the Soviet Union in an arms race and stimulate the economy by borrowing money to build up our military. As a result, a lot of money went to Southern California aerospace firms, who hired people, distributed profits to stockholders who, in turn, made purchases and other investments that benefited still others.
Remember that was "borrowed money," so taxes didn't necessarily pay it off...because the debt is cumulative and generally NOT paid down, but rolled over after interest is paid.
But...we both agree on the solution...cut spending and raise taxes until the debt gets back down to a managable level.
Dirty Republican McConnel known lobbyist for China and accused of taking money under the table from British Armsdealer. Why is someone like him still taking pot shots at children and teachers. Vote him out.
I just don't think I can believe anything these lying senators say or claim. Better to do nothing than to make more mistakes with bailouts. They didn't work last time so let's just not go down that road. I don't want a jobs bill passed as long as this OWS thing is going on. It would just give more steam to a really bad idea....
Best to close the book on plans that are just temp fixes anyway. We need to encourage business which can provide sustaining jobs, we don't need more teachers anyway, people are not having the number of children as years before, I think those having kids should be taxed hirer anyhow, eliminate these tax advantages for those having more than one child.
I`m sorry but didn`t we just give the states billions of dollers in 2009 and 2010 to put teachers back to work. What happened to that money?Does the federial tax program have to start paying for the teachers in every state. If so then I suggest that the teachers have to agree to some conditions. One desolve the teachers union, two start paying as much toward thier insurance and retirement as the rest of us have to.Start teaching the kids so that when they come out of high school they can actually succeed in life.Fire the ones that can`t do the job.Otherwise let Schumer and the Democrats and the unions take care of them. After all they are the ones trying to use tax payer money to buy thier votes with.
You don't want the anchor babies and illegals not receiving free education do you? Why should hard working Americans that are losing their houses because they have lost their jobs not want to see the economy slide further into the toilet with yet another bailout? Shouldn't we pump more money into teachers unions and pensions so these anti-Americans can be safe and secure in their old age?
We need to clean out the white house and also the congress and get some people in there representing those paying taxes and to do what is right for ALL Americans, making it stronger once again if it isn't too late. A congress that has to live from the same rules, same health insurance, same SSI and level the playing field....
Rebel,
What the hell does abolishing the teacher's union have to do with any of this?
Please enlighten me. So far all I smell is rubbish. But hey, I could be wrong.
Rebel: do the same to the banks that were bailed out!
Give the banks back their bad mortgages!
Regulate them !
Who will pay the American people back their losses in 401-k plans, and the pensions that the states can not pay for now?
It seams like the wealthy got the biggest hand out of all time!, what about the people whose equity went down? because of risky stock market deals?
you act like the workers caused this problem!!!
The Unions did not cause the problem either!
You also think the states should take over the ss and medicare, you tea Repubs are really full of it!!!
rebel, brilliant just brilliant...love it
Yeah, right.
It ain't gonna happen this year, folks.
Probably not next year either.
