Republicans this year are on pace for the most GOP primary debates in history. Primary debates can’t necessarily make a campaign, but they can break it.
Video edited by Domenico Montanaro.
EDITOR'S NOTE: I omitted when talking with Chuck after the piece about when the first debates were in 2004. It turns out, there was one in May 2003, so the process was starting earlier then as well.

Begs the question - aren't they DONE yet?
I'm curious to see what gets the biggest applause this evening...
So far the crowd has gone wild over;
Killing possibly innocent men & not losing any sleep over it...
Letting a 30 year old uninsured man die in the street...
Booing a gay member of the military who currently is putting his life on the line to fight for OUR freedoms...
Yup!
Who don't love the compassionate conservatives? lol
You don't have to watch or care. It is clear where you stand and who you will vote for. As a conservative this is important. They agree to these debates and most have been put on by liberal media outlets. You disagree we get it, you preach to your choir and try to stir up fights with cute little insults. You show the true colors of a liberal and I am not saying that is a bad thing. But let the right go through their primary, just like y'all did last year.
"They agree to these debates and most have been put on by liberal media outlets"
======
Ah yes, the always liberal media outlets talking point. Of the debates that they have had to date, could you name me one of them where the candidates or their campaigns walked away griping about what has happened on the stage? From my perspective, the sassy ones have been those hosted by Fox.
My point is, what was your point in that particular sentence? I didn't see that it added anything to what you were saying.
Republican debate will be talking points over and over again with an occasional snipe at Perry or Romney or Cain since they are the front runners now. No original thoughts. Even 999 was stolen from SimCity 4. No original material at all. Frank Lutz talking points. All of them. Can't wait for the general election debates.
It didn't. But his marching orders this morning were to go out and slam some liberals.
My point is, that it has been a collective of groups that have put these debates together. So why rip them, when the very most liberal of media sponsors one or two. No marching orders here, don't care who puts on the debates. Point is to let them as much as they want to. They have every right to, just as the democrates would if they were in a primary.
Begs the question - aren't they DONE yet?
Maybe not. When the moderator asks about the seriousness of Cain's immigration solution and electrocuted fences, I hope there won't be any cheers to support his policy, I mean "supposed" joke.
To the question about the number of debates, I haven't watched since Perry's first one. Missed about three and haven't been happier. Anyway, tonight I'm being trained by the county for the new election rules the legislature just implemented to disenfranchise voters. Election day 2011 is right around the corner.
So if they say something stupid (999) or unemphatic (it takes balls to kill an innocent man) or incoherant (before, after, for it or against it 'Perry'), if you're not a conservative you're not aloud to point it out?
So what have you learned from these debates Mr. WSR that you did not already know of the 'conservative' candidates that are running?
Happy Birthday, Feisty. It's my Mom's b-day, too! Hope you're doing something special to celebrate. Was about to post this on FT but the delivery truck arrived.
I'm in good company! ;o)
You must be SO excited! I can't wait to hear the details!
Enjoy!
Happy 29th Birthday Fiesty! Let's just hope Michele Bachmann does not wish you a happy birthday anytime soon!
YIKES! LOL
*facepalm*
Thank you! ;o)
I'm going to be naughty but honest Fiesty, I don't know if they are selling Viagra or what with that add, but if they are, they are defeating themselves, because I now have such a "hard on " for that add I will never ever need Viagra!
I enjoy it when you're naughty Forrest, almost as much as when you're funny! ;o)
There have been some annoying changes here at First Read over the years but, that AD take the prize as the MOST irritating EVUH!
Freakin thing opens up on it's own when I'm NO WHERE near it! lol
No, kidding Feisty. These debates have been less revealing of the candidates and more revealing of the depravity of the current state of the Republican Party.
Yep Amy - it's all about "depravity."
Or lies. Some politicians just seem to be good a lies:
1. Raising the debt ceiling is a failure of leadership;
2. Pass the stimulus or unemployment will exceed 8.0%;
3. Gitmo must be closed;
4. The wars should be ended as soon as possible;
5. Libyan - Days, now weeks;
6. Obamacare will bend the cost curve down/Class will save $86 billion/if you like your doctor you'll be able to keep him/her;
7. Shovel ready;
8. My budget proposal is sound and fiscally responsible.
9. the buffett rule is a great idea;
10. If I can't turn this around in three years, there will only be one term.
Lies Amy, all lies.
Except one.
But yes, you should focus on the "depravity" f the GOP. Never mind that the DNC controls the white house and the senate. Never mind that Obama was at 70% approval, but now is under 40%.
Oh and ignore the whole right track/wrong track, and the fact that a majority believe Obama's policies will or have already failed.
Keep the fantastic comments coming Amy. Yu are on fire. It is your day today.
Spanky,
Hardly lies but some promises unkept and some lies by you, Spanks. A lie is something like what Bush and Cheney did for the war in Iraq. What they also did to justify torture. Those are true bold lies. Let's not cheapen a lie. Let's give the lie the grandeur it deserves. See you are also equipped with Frank Lutz's talking points (lies) this morning. You are an attorney Spanks. Can't come up with something original this am? Come on man!
All right wing tripe there Spanky, but what's new from you. It's easy to twist things when you ignore all of the facts. Show me in all of your nonsense there where the left CHEERED for people to DIE? I'll take any of the tripe you posted there, along with the REAL facts that go along with it, over the depravity of your party any day, any time. Your party has stopped caring about people. It's lost its way. It's been hijacked by people like you who would sell us all out to some corporation in a heartbeat if you thought there was a buck in it for yourself. Republicans have become about money and self, and nothing more.
And here I thought with that big lawyer brain (or so he says) and critical thinking skills the spankster just might come up with some original thinking as opposed to being complicit in the America's race to the bottom. So tell us spank to REALLY believe the crap you write on this blog? Do you or your partaaaay have ANY ideas other than no taxes and let the market decide? Just askin!
AnaB- I brought this up years ago when I first came to First Read. I still don't understand the term "talking Point." The things I say, and positions I take are mine, based upon my experience and understanding of the way the world works.
So Amused - those are not the positions Obama has taken? I made them up?
But I understand - it makes you all feel better about yourself to proclaim you care, or have empathy, whereas we do not.
That's fine, whatever it takes to get you all through the day. Of course it is not true, as demonstrated by many factors including amount of time and money donated to charity.
So Amused, do you actually think you give more of your time and money to help people than I do? If you do, what is that based upon?
In fact I would love to hear the number of hours you have spent so far this month working with the poor, people with disabilities, or that just need your help.
Amused, what do you got? How much do you care, and how do you show it?
AnaBanana-1782128
spanky is only re-telling the lies he was told and that way he doesn't have to deal with facts. this tax welfare glutton would never think of any one around him. check all spanky post. they always express one thing, me me me me.........absolutely selfish.
spanky
if you really work with the poor or care give up your tax welfare.
No thanks PEN - I will maximize every deduction and credit. The goal of the tax system is to minimize the tax burden. I wonder PEN if you realize that? Have you ever read the code? Do you even pay taxes?
I bet you don't know this, but many deductions and credits phased out.
So PEN why won't your champoin dems do something about the code? Why did they write in all that "tax welfare?"
Pen - identify a lie I have told. Identify facts that I don't deal with.
See PEN - it real easy to drop in and post a comment that is nothing but a conclusion, with no suport whatsoever.
So lets see what you actually got PEN. Anything?
" Have you ever read the code?"
My My My....where have we seen THIS before???
spanky
read your post in # 2.1 and you'll identify the lies and fact you don't' deal with.
Do have anything order than tax codes? fairness in taxation will erase all you fears about tax codes.........so support the movement and pay your fair share. Tax cuts will create jobs.... where are the jobs? that's another lie you bought into. it's never a good site to watch your neighbors loosing their jobs and moving out of their homes. you're hear asking me if i pay taxes did you ask GE and the rest if they pay taxes?
Am blessed. this country have giving me and my family so much and we're ready to pay more. that patriotism. give back to the country that have giving you so much. Mr tax welfare, pay you fair share and stop whining.
Then pay more and enjoy PEN. But nothing in 2.1 is a lie. Plus it all came directly from Obama, so there is that.
Fair share? You are funny Pen.
Oh and how come Obama doesn't care that GE doesn't seem to pay it's fair share PEN?
You are funny.
The Dems responsible for all the loopholes and credits.....LOL try both sides of the aisle. Obama responsible for GE writing down losses? Pleaaaase! That is a lie. Please support it with the "new" code you are referring to counselor.
Years ago Spanky? You've been a member for a little over a year under the name Spanky,if you've been on here years ago, what did you post under before that. Are you a re reg?
Promises not yet kept are a far cry from being depraved, I guess you guys would know more about depravity:
Definintion: de·prav·i·ty/diˈpravitÄ“/
Noun:
Moral corruption.
A wicked or morally corrupt act.
Let's start with lying about going to war on a country, that had no part in 9-11. the number of people killed as a result of that depraved decision, is depravity personified.
The more debates the better, spread that campaign cash around , it is the only stimulation of the economy republicans can take credit for.
spanky
Oh and how come Obama doesn't care that GE doesn't seem to pay it's fair share PEN?
NO. The appropriate question you should be asking is, why doesn't GOP/TP support Obama's efforts to make all pay their share? WHY?
Where to start Spanky. First, I never stated that your tripe in 2.1 weren't Obama positions. I just don't call them something that they are not, which is what you did. Anyone here could easily say that everything you have ever posted here are "Lies, all lies". I could debunk most of what you posted in 2.1 but it isn't worth the time as you display an unwillingness to accept anything positive.
I'm not interested in your tax deductible conscious clearing donations to charity. Not in the least bit. They are likely as disingenuous as your commentary. It's not about how much money you give away Spanky, which is usually were wealthy right wingers like to take it. See!! See!! I gave my buck to the blind man!! Tripe. All of it tripe.
What do I got? You make my point! That's all you guys are interested in, what someone has. If you don't have enough, you're not worth a crap! Isn't that right Spanky? Unless someone has whatever the right wing thinks is "enough" then they are not worthy of existence.
Tax welfare. Tax welfare or corporate welfare, is a republican trait. However, both parties have used the tax code for years to reward those who march in lock step, and to hurt those who choose not to. The tax code is a government weapon used to make people and corporations buy into the latest idea. It's not fair, it's never been fair, it was not designed to be fair. You won't find many on the left who do not fully understand that the tax code needs to be changed fundamentally and fairly. To do so requires an opposition that is also capable of fairness and compromise (you remember this, not getting your own way all the time) which we do not currently have. And yes, it is fair to tax those who benefit the most from the society that those taxes support a little more than those who do not benefit as much. Without the society that the taxes support, you couldn't make all that money you guys like to worship so much.
How in the world did Comedy Central miss getting the rights to these 'debates', anyway??
Hey, Red- I see a story where the teleprompter and some other broadcast gear was stolen from the road trip that's going on. I'll buy you a drink of your choice for each time some screwball with no issues to discuss brings it up on here the rest of the day.
(but let me go clean out my savings, first.....maybe get a 2nd mortgage while I'm at it))
And I'll buy you one each time these dolts bring up the bus... ;o)
Oh well, at least they're not calling us Nazi's today... lol
What are you talking about Msnbc got one.
That's the place for comedy, right?
Have you not been watching the Rev. Al? Big Ed Schultz?
Comedy gold Drive By. Stop watching so much Fox and Lean Forward.
DBO
Let them steal the teleprompter one thing they can't steal or copy is the message. The magic of words ain't on the teleprompter rather it's with the messenger, Obama.
Hey, how about that teleprompter thing?
And happy birthday, Feisty!!!!!
Hey, how about that teleprompter thing?
Hey, how about that teleprompter thing?
AM
You got your teleprompter echoing......LOL
LoL I've also got Buzz committed to buy Feisty at least 3 rounds so far.
Hey, how about that teleprompter thing?
LOL!
Good golly Miss Anna Molly will you pace yourself GF?
Thank you for the Birthday wishes but, at the rate your going I'll be heading for a black out! LOL
Don't worry Feisty--the day is still young--at least here in the Pacific Northwest! I am certain that at least one troll will be forthcoming!
"We have met the enemy and he is us!" Pogo by Walt Kelly
Or just keep watching Fox and Bend Over
Feisty
before AM knocks you out, happy birthday.
Actually, Feisty:
What Spanky means to say in his inartful and inarticulate way is:
Happy Birthday!
Pen-24
Who would want to steal or copy the message BHO has? He hasnt been right yet, so the only reason to steal the message would be to know what not to say and do.
Its not the message, its the messenger. Still in love with the guy are you? At least there is getting to be little competition in this arena. Soon you may be the last person in love with him and his message.
Reminds me of people in abusive relationships that keep going back to the spouse to get beat down some more.
Dont worry, the GOP is coming to the rescue with an intervention for you. You can thank us later.
ABO 2012
Absolutely NewDay I do.
Feisty: Happy Birthday. I understand that you are under 50, so good for you.
I can honestly say two things in Feisty's honor:
1. This place certainly would not be the same without her; and
2. Her posts are always entertaining.
So carry on not so old gal. ;)
Okay, by my clock it's been 37 minutes.
Hey, Buzz, how about that teleprompter thing?
OH... you naughty naughty girl! ;o)
Thank you PEN-24!
So far I'm still standing! lol I think Buzz has run out to get more cash! ;o)
Good to see you all admit that you all fit Drive By's definition:
"...some screwball with no issues to discuss brings it up on here the rest of the day."
Don't be so hard on yourselves. Sometimes one or two of you actually has a legitimate issue.
Good for you Spanky, and in honor of that gracious post, I take back both the "inartful and inarticulate."
That is two righties with some class, wasn't that you on the front page wishing Feisty a happy birthday, dsdsherm?
Others?
Huh?
Did he say something relevant for a change? lol
If that's the case - I'll be back... gonna run out and but a Lotto ticket! ;o)
Y'all be crackin' me up, fo' shizzle, with this teleprompter thing, AM.
My ATM card is so thin, it only has one side now.
(hope the bank doens't charge extra for that!)
Oh, and AM- Sure glad I didn't try this with, say, Chevy Volt or Solyndra and some malcontent me-firster from out West!
Tee hee. *snicker*.
Don't feel bad DBO I was at the gym and I asked the guy that works there, "what machine should I use if I wanted to impress that young women over" there, he looked at me and said "you better try the ATM machine".
I see he took the bait, anyway. Snicker, tee hee.
How clever of you to figure that out, Spanky.
That -- and YOUR ATM card -- probably gets YOU a date with Ms. Spanky, too.
Perry would definitely have the best answers to this.
I've voted in every presidential election since 1976, but I've only paid attention to two presidential primary fights in my whole life: the year Clinton won his first presidential primary (I supported Tsongas, but I really just went because my friend was looking for a guy she liked), and when I stood in line in the freezing rain to caucus for Obama. In 2007 I watched every debate and forum, trying to decide who to support, and when I decided on Obama, I was in all the way.
I guess my point is: who pays attention to primaries? So far, this is kind of looking like a "normal" year for Republicans, in that they aren't too enthused about the primary fight. Not too enthused now means moderately enthused later. I, on the other hand, still have my Obama signage and I'm eying an Obama mug for my desk, right now.
Amy,
sorry , you are totally wrong. Like in 2010, all signs point to huge enthusiasm among Republicans to vote out the failure Obama and all the Red State Democrat senators.
In 2013, the GOP will have House, Senate and White House, thanks to the massive failure of Obama .
Enthusiasm gap is right.
But you cannot expect the Amys of the world to open their eyes and see the unmitigated failure that is Obama.
But the good news is most everyone else, including many former supporters have. And they can plainly the naked emperor.
No one here will touch Debbie Downer's most recent statement that they "were not elected to create jobs."
Cause they now finally understand that they cannot.
So brace for the landslide folks. Greece, Cali and ill are about to really hit the skids.
Not enthused? Not enthused now means not enthused later?
Have you lost all your marbles? We have been and continue to count down the days to when we have the opportunity to vote BHO out. And to many of us, it does not matter who the candidate is on our side. I cannot say I am enthusiatic about any of them.
But I am sure I will be enthused to vote AGAINST BHO when the opportunity arrives. And I am sure you will find many many more who are waiting for the same thing.
Remember Amy, it is not a matter of us loving a candidate that will motivate us. It will be another historic vote that motivates us. It is not every election cycle that we have the oppotunity to vote against the worst, most anti-American president in history. This opportunity hasnt presented itself since Carter. And this one trumps Carter, as BHO has been much worse.
So while there may not be zealous enthusiasm for our candidates, it is because all of them are miles ahead of the alternate choice. There will be plenty of enthusiasm and motivation this cycle to vote against Obama.
The primary process is neccessary and will produce a candidate on our side that is suitable to replace this failure. The enthusiasm, however will not be for him, but against BHO.
You should be able to pick up an Obama mug cheap. I would wait till after the election though, as they will be on clearance.
ABO 2012
I'd say debates matter only if you do poorly in them, right, Governor Perry?
Do primarys debates matter? Only for the party raising money for the candidate.
Why not instead, a series of public time, equal for all candidates, where they can open up and tell the nation who they are, for what they stand, their thoughts for the country and how they plan to move their agenda forward?
Each candidate can then appeal to the mass of voters without the interaction of people who may be bias in their questions to the candidate. Just a one-on-one sales job from the candidate to the people.
Now doesn't that end the evil money gathering that many talk about today?
I think this year the debates have been pivotal - not for the usual winner Mitt - but rather for the co-winner Cain - and the loser Scary Perry.
Mitt is stuck at about 25% of the GOP faithful. It just doesn't seem to matter how well he does - how much he has improved since 2008 - he is totally stuck. He does not excite the Tea Party crowd or the Evangelicals. He is bland.
Cain has very cleverly and effectively used these debates to introduce himself. He projects a sunny optimism and sense of confident conviction. He totally dominated last week's debate. And I am sure that he will be the focus tonight. But he seems to have a very hefty coating of Teflon that will help him deflect the numerous arrows that will be shot at him by the other six this evening.
Scary Perry has imploded - mainly because of the debates. He comes across as a very dim bulb. He has that 'deer in the headlights look' much of the time. He also has the "rock" issue - and his inane statements about Bernanke and evolution being simply a "theory" and questioning the validity of global warming.... Scary Perry is Texas Toast that was burned to a crisp last week by Mrs. Scary Perry who reminded us that he was "called by God" to run. I frankly don't see how he can recover - even though he has a gazillion $$.
So, yes, this year the debates have been critical.
These debates are a waste of time except for us Dems who'll use them as ammo against the repuke candidate...which will most likely be Romney because he looks and sounds and moves like Reagan, the GOP Patron St., aka, the worst president in US history.
PS - Thanks Obama for saving the Israeli soilder..he's release because of your hard work, I'm sure of it, and if you disagree with me, I will ignore you.
pat,
Romney looks nothing like Reagan. If he did, this would already be over.

ABC 2012
Hope someone tonight asks Mitt about his statement released about an hour ago where he said he opposes any type of foreclosure relief for struggling homeowners. That will go over big in Nevada.
And maybe someone can ask Mitt how the remodeling of his 30,000 sq ft mansion in San Diego is going!
It is no remodel, he literally will be tearing down a 12 million dollar home to build a new 40-50 million dollar home. The 30,000 sq. ft. is not big enough for his families needs.
Romney can so relate to the rest of us, after all he too is unemployed.
These debates actually mean zilch and most people ignore them' it just helps people decide which one is the dumbest.
**** Are they done yet? Like watching paint dry!!
Of course, these debates are vitally important to the people! It gives everyone an opportunity to see just what empty vessels these Republicans really are.
When you're in the hip pocket of one small group (in this case, the very wealthiest) it's nearly impossible to produce ideas that will work for all the people.
Note: Is anyone else as bugged about this United Healthcare ad as I am??
